There is a remarkable similarity in the sound of all three groups when singing the same song. If you like one group it's natural to like the others too. I recall that back in the fifties I'd turn on the radio and within an hour I'd be sure to hear the Four Freshman. Now, with youtube, we can hear all three groups, one after another.
I recall one night, at Top of The Plaza, Rochester, NY, circa 1977, when the originalFreshmen sang Surfer Girl. They actually made it a funny routine by starting the tune in the key of F (I believe) and taking it all the way up to the key of A. Bob Flanagan's eyes were popping out of his head.The Beach Boys were one of my favorite groups because they sold beautifully constructed music to a public that was being force fed an appreciation of what was good, as opposedto the garbage they had come to love.The new version of the Freshmen is the very essence of what the FF tradition truly represents. Just listen to the harmony blends, and the fluegelhorn solos, and you areback in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I speak from the limited experience of having sung withFF type groups. Great music, harmony, pace, class, original, variety, all the things that hard rock will never be. Never used profanity, raw sex, or drugs. and their group lives on replicated with honor and as precise as can be accomplished. Playing to nothing but sell out concerts.
