Wait for the 2024 Skoda Kodiaq or buy an old one? 2000-mile review

  • I've been living with this 2022 Skoda Kodiaq SE Drive model for the past 3 months - here are my thoughts on how it copes with family life, what tech I think it's missing and what it's like to drive. This is the 2.0-litre diesel with 150hp, front-wheel drive and no options other than the black paint! And yes, my coat is ridiculous. Sorry.

    I have a Skoda Kodiaq 2020 2.0 Diesel SEL 4x4 and it’s the best car I have ever had from an all round functionality, comfort and space. It’s practical , massive boot and 7 seats. We use it for family holidays (3 kids) and biking with the tow bar. I previously had Santa Fe, Audi Q5, A6, A4, A3 and switched to Kodiaq. I average 44MPG on my normal months where I have a short 12mile commute each way and have done 45,000 miles in 3.5 years. My wife had the Tarraco 2.0 Diesel 4x4 and the Skoda is better built and much quieter. The CarPlay is nice and works well.

    2yr Kodiaq owner. It's the Golf of the SUV world. It's not perfect at anything, but it does everything well, which makes it a great car.
    Swallows my x4(+ dog) family and when I've needed it to, it's managed off road around my farm.

    Nice review Tim. I bought a base model Kodiaq Style here in Australia with nearly every extra. But in Australia we can only opt for bundles of extras in packs. I added the Luxury Pack and the Tech Pack. I also added mud flaps and the electric tow bar (brilliant idea). We now only get a choice of two petrol EA888 engines. Mine and the Sportline (mid level model) have 132kW/320Nm and the RS gets the 180kW/350Nm. 18 months ago my loaded Style cost $70,000 drive away with the 7 year warranty/service pack/roadside assistance. The RS comes with everything here, including the sunroof. I think you could add a few little things like mud flaps, etc… The RS was $15,000 more. All this was more expensive than the VW Tiguan Allspace!!!! Skoda is no longer cheap and cheerful. It can be treated as a pseudo sports hatch as the torque is brilliant. I was using it as a mobile detailing van as there 2000 litres with all the seats down is about the same size as an Audi Q7!! Sadly it must go as its too big for us now (my wife won’t drive it) so I’d like to get into a Sportline Karoq (top of the line here in Oz, but having zero resale value means we will probably steer clear of a Skoda 😭. Keep up the great work and I would love to see a review of the Octavia wagon v the Superb wagon. Lloyd

    My kids have grown up now, allegedly, but back in 2007 I bought a new c4 Picasso vtr thing with the 2.0 diesel, easily the worst turd of a machine ever, apart from the engine. Wish to god Skoda had been making these then.

  • @boglife19
    @boglife19 6 месяцев назад

    Hi Tim, I'm looking to get one myself but I am more inclined towards the 2.0 petrol engine. I don;t do a lot of miles yearly and would like it to be the family car for going on long trips and family vacations. Would you say the petrol engine is just as good ? (overlooking the mpg obviously :) ).

  • @nstarmore
    @nstarmore 7 месяцев назад +5

    Given that almost everything VW/Skoda has replaced lately is considerably worse that what went before I'd say buy now, but actually just buy a Superb instead because it's better in every conceivable way

    • @waltersobchak1719
      @waltersobchak1719 7 месяцев назад +5

      Every conceivable way? Fewer seats. Smaller boot. Can’t take it off road (unless you are an idiot). Like you, I prefer the Superb, but it isn’t better than a Kodiaq.

    • @nstarmore
      @nstarmore 7 месяцев назад

      @@waltersobchak1719 I don't think you'd take a Kodiaq very far off road either tbh but I take your point. As far as the boot is concerned the Kodiak probably has a bigger one in theory but I would put a sizable bet on the superb having a bigger usable boot. Also the ride and handling will be worse because of what it is, so unless you really need those extra 2 seats...

    • @waltersobchak1719
      @waltersobchak1719 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@nstarmore The Kodiaq actually rides better than the Superb - I have driven both, and over some undulations there is a weird “floatiness” in the ride of the Superb that isn’t there in the Kodiaq. Handling wise? Nothing in it really. In terms of boot space, if you go for the Estate, that is almost as big as the Kodiaq (not sure what you mean by “usable”?), but the Hatch is much less practical. Also, the Kodiaq is also shorter than the Superb, so easier to fit in parking spaces (although, admittedly, a couple of cm wider.
      The kodiaq’s the better car, but I’d still take the Superb!

    • @nstarmore
      @nstarmore 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@waltersobchak1719 the floatiness is probably what I'd class as comfort, the kodiaq will have to be much firmer to deal with higher centre of gravity and extra weight, although I will concede that, oddly, some people prefer a firmer ride, I have a history with hydropneumatic Citroens so most cars ride too firmly to me. By usable boot I mean floor area mainly and I am talking about the estate here (I tend to forget they do a hatch version). Boot space is quoted in litres and usually makes SUV's bigger on paper when most of the extra space is in the height, which is pointless 99% of the time.

    • @waltersobchak1719
      @waltersobchak1719 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@nstarmore The ride quality on the Kodiaq I drove (a 2 litre SE model) was excellent, although probably nothing compared to a Citroen, which are renowned for soft riding cars. My daily car is an 8 year old Octavia VRS. It has been very reliable and I love it, but it has the worst suspension I have ever experienced - it handles pretty well for a family car, but if there his a hole in the road more than 1 mm deep it will let your spine know about it! The Kodiaq was like driving around sat on a cloud after that!

    Not sure I understand well the meaning of 'standard fit reversing camera' , if it is supposed to mean it is in the standard list of accessories as in it is there by default, it would be "couvací kamera v základní výbavě"- literally rearing camera in basic accessory level (and up) [CZ word couvat = to back]

    If you want a reliable suv at a reasonable price which costs little to run you will find it hard to beat a Skoda Kodiaq or a Skoda Karoq - they are not the fastest of vehicles but in the UK there is nowhere to drive fast anyway save a racing track.
