Living alone, you know your heart can be broken if you lose your spouse. You will never have that sadness of losing someone or you die and break someone's heart. Hey! its great and I am not lonely. Too many things to do.to be lonesome. I am soon to be 74 and thank God I am still healthy.
Now 74, retired and living alone I agree with the points made in this excellent video. Keep in mind that the wrong partner can make your life miserable and personal freedom is wonderful compensation for solitude. No drama and stress enables satisfaction with everyday life.
I'm 71, the only thin person out of nine children, a health nut because I love fruits and vegetables, no vices, and I exercise 3 hours a day having been a martial artist since age 15. And I love creating light-hearted funny sayings. This one is for you. If you want a headache, fall in love. If you want to fall in love, get a puppy.
Wow. @Ehdrock You know everything about this person who you don’t know and have never have met. Incredible, but your projection of yourself tells us reams about yourself.
i'm 94, widowed, have lived alone for many years. made my own decision to stop driving. so fortunate to have family, friends, and neighbors who take me to church, shopping, and a weekly restaurant lunch. miss my cat, but won't replace her---i'm no longer able to give a pet the care it deserves. grateful for daughters, grands, and adult greats, who show me love, and make sure i'm okay.
I am so blessed. After my 2nd husband passed away, 5 years ago, I moved back to the States from St. Croix. I really didn’t want to buy another house or live in an apartment. My son-in-law suggested I build onto their home an apartment, I designed just for me. I have my own separate entrance with a very large “L” shaped porch overlooking their pond, with large picture windows to enjoy the views. I had a roll-in shower if I’m ever in need of a wheelchair. It is small, with a huge walk-in closet. My builder was able to give me 10’ ceilings making my little apartment seem much larger. I’m 73 and see my daughter every day. Yes, I am very blessed.😊
Not once did I hear you mention that you exercise everyday. It's sad that the older people get, especially women, they haven't exercised since junior high school and all look like Everybody Loves Raymond's mom by the time they're 60. I will never date a woman who is shaped like a beach ball. I'm 71, thin, martial artist, very athletic, no vices and I exercise 3 hours a day. I should point out that I've also never been sick, never even been to a doctor. And I'm a psychologist.
Since I turned 85, l like to nap when I can. I still work everyday, drive about 215 to 250 miles a day (freeway and city). Cut wood for winter. Married 64 years. Not rich or even well off but what the heck. I am truly blessed and know it, I thank God for all the blessings He has given me. I try to do a good deed everyday.
I’m not surprised you nap when you can…i think you owe it to yourself as you are so busy. I think some younger people would benefit by being as motivated as you. Well done 😊
I envy you your cat. My last cat died 2 yrs ago. I miss him so much. I’m 90 & don’t want another pet because I worry what would happen to it when I’m gone. I’ve settled for a Betta fish. Not like a fur buddy but something.
I turn 76 next month and have lived alone since I was 43, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the silence, the solitude and not having to compromise.
There was a TV show which I can't remember where David Spade was one of the main characters and while talking to two married couples, and him being single, he said "well I'm going to go and do... whatever I want."
I am an old boomer with no wife, kids, or any more wonderful pets. My few friends have passed on. I'm fine, being totally alone for 10 years, but, at times it gets lonely but I have several hobbies that keep me going.
If like me you might want someone to have a meal and conversation ...I would live to have someone to talk with as I do landscape sketches....but no drama is bliss.
@@marjoriejohnson6535it is bliss most of the time I had abusive parents and two abusive husbands so I’m grateful I survived to live alone. I do have my cat and my little dog but as you say it would be wonderful to have one friend who knows when to give me space but is ready to go out for a meal and a laugh. I do have my telly on most of the day as company I have bipolar so sometimes the silence it too loud for me. We all need to care for ourselves with love and kindness say good morning to whoever we pass.
@@marjoriejohnson6535 Would love to see your landscape sketches... Have always loved etchings..Maybe a group could be formed here online of those of us who live alone to talk to each other and share our hobbies and ideas....???
When at times you feel depressed, think out loud get your thoughts heard by your brain and you will be a lot lighter and a lot happier to enjoy your hobbies even better than you do now.
I’m 75 and have 4 cats. I lost two of my beautiful cats last year. My cats are so loved and cared for. They are the best companions I could have. I’m also living with my girlfriend. But she’s partially disabled and can’t do physical work. That makes it tough because I can’t do physical work either. I was doing ok until last November when I developed a lung problem. It wasn’t until 9 months later when I was diagnosed with emphysema. Because my health has declined in the last few months I get super depressed. Just last week I learned my PSA test for post-op prostate cancer went up so now I have to get radiation and hormone therapies. I haven’t started the treatments yet and I’m scared to death about all the side effects. The treatments cause loss of libido and a terrible feeling in my body. The treatment will mean I have to go get radiation 5 times a week for 9 weeks. That’s 45 radiation treatments. I don’t know what to do. The doctor said I wouldn’t have a problem for at least 5 years so I’m wondering if I should not have the treatments. I need to talk to the doctor again to ask more questions, like if the side effects are permanent. I love sex so having libido taken away is such a depressing thought. Anyone else dealing with these issues? All the best to everyone.

I never was on my own until my beautiful late husband dropped dead unexpectedly, I was frozen. I lost my voice. It was 10 years ago this month. I never thought I could ever make it without him. I Did. I’m grateful people posted. It gives us a lot of inspiration and I’m 80 now.

'God' appears as a bright light to dead people. That's about it. Apart from the very few living people who have a distinct spiritual experience, he doesn't appear to be doing anything. When is this God going to get up off his holy arse and do something down here to improve the world and prove he exists?
I’m going on for my furbaby I am miserable I ache for human contact I’m homebound without assistance I’m riddled with arthritis I spent 46 years with my husband I can’t remember living without him 😢
Arthritis improves with movement and exercise. If you have a dog, please take your dog for a daily walk. Your dog will feel better, and so will you. Also, look into your local senior citizens center for socialization and activities.
@@barbaracarroll4774I’ve heard certain yoga movements are great for arthritis, there are people who say they couldn’t get out of bed but are now walking their dogs and getting out.
My mom lived in a seniors high rise. Her neighbor fell and laid there all day, until the daughter came that evening. The daughter actually blamed my Mom! She beat on mom’s door wanting to know why she didn’t help her mother! Mom told the fool she didn’t know anything about it! That she had no idea ANYTHING was wrong.
I’m 85, I put a combination lock on my condo door and registered my code with the fire department. I also have an extra cell phone by my bed and I have Alexa. I can ask her to call emergency as I have the number in my contact list. I take care of all my needs, exercise etc. However, I can go days without using my voice. My family only text. I rarely cook except soup etc. But, I do eat out everyday. I’m an Aries, independent and enjoy my only company. I spend lots of time reading, playing brain games and using my iPad. I would rather walk than go to the gym. I live in Florida so it’s hot. I have a goal of 6,000 steps per day. I’m not taking any prescription except eye drops. So far, I’m lucky.
I also live in Florida and prefer to go for a walk than go to gym but it’s just too hot to walk outside in the summer. Good for you doing so well at 85 - I’m 76 and have a cat who’s 19 doing great that goodness… my mom was 103 .
Lost my wife to a heart attack after 44 years of marriage. The first year alone was a nightmare, but now a couple years after, life is good again. Freedom to eat, sleep, take a drive or trip is now on my time line. I pick the restaurants, see the movies I want to see. Sure, I do miss marriage, but building a new life can be fulfilling.
Became a widow at 35 yrs old. It was the first time I understood how fragile life/time is and was shattered. I had to get to know myself as an adult alone for the first time. Went from family to husband. It took me a good 10 years to find myself and now I never feel alone, I treasure it. It takes alone time to really know who you are and what you like as an individual. It’s a hard journey because feeling lonely is more about self neglect.
@@janpolo799 I agree people need to live alone - for a significant time period! - to get to know Self. Being a "double hermit" by nature, this came naturally to me, but I'm surprised at how many don't do it.
74 and living alone. Never lonely. Have always enjoyed my own company. Adopted a senior rescue dog 4 years ago that is the love of my life. Recently diagnosed with blood cancer. The cancer is slow growing and symptoms are manageable. I keep in touch daily with friends and family via social media. The more I listen to the spousal complaints of friends, I am so thankful to be alone. Well, I can’t write anything more as I have too much to do. 😊
Have you read the book Cancer, The Metacolic Disease Unravelled by Mark Sloan which tells the truth about what cancer really is and the simple remedies he recommends.
I also adopted a senior dog 4 years ago! She is likely about 17 years old now. She still bounces around happily (for short periods, between naps). We get along well.

me too 82 So sad I am used to always having a few very close friends, but the truth is I have no one to turn to for anything and that is very daunting. My handyman brother can't find his way to help me even though he is well equipped to do so and I so much love when he comes for a day every two years but when I ask, he is too "busy”. Family and friends, passed on and as a Trump supporter even telephone friends are gone because I don't agree with their political ideas. You may think I must be an awful person but like to listen and help others even though as an empath I am very sensitive and easily overwhelmed by people’s difficulties.
I fell and laid on the floor for 6 hours. I do have an adopted son that my husband and I adopted at 52 ( long story) however he is 18 now has a job and a girlfriend so I dont see him until late at night and its late so he's very sweet but he has a life and I dont put pressure on him. @@franciastone5048 I feel that he does care deeply, I was an arch feminist and I set out to crucify him and investigated the Rosie Odonnel issue and then I started to follow him and I had to be humbled by my own harshness. I read about his helpfulness, his employees love him, he had helped so many people thru the years, and has women employed in many key jobs. The narrative about him began when he ran because as an outsider he would surely rock the DC boat and as a deal maker he has an intuitive ability to sniff out where the bodies are. So he's a threat to get rid of. Basically I had to face my own unfairness as a raging feminist and see that men are just as good as women and not all ill willed ... now I see women acting so aggressively that they have become the very men they complained about: territorial, super aggressive and opportunistic. So I changed from feminist to humanist and I look to see the humanity in him and others. Democrat is a word for what used to be but is no longer, it's now just a word and the party has morphed into something morbid ... completely reversed. So that is my observation, and I am used to trusting it wholeheartedly. Hope this answers your question, sorry for so many words.
This hits the nail on the head ! I am an introvert. But my Mother has died and I have no one to share first thing in the morning and last thing at night. The grief is hard and I have to deal with that , it’s awful. 😞
I’m 67 and live alone I’m also retired but I have a very sweet daughter that checks on me everyday and refuses to let me feel lonely. I am a introvert but I like people a few at a time however when I retired there went those I would communicate with I did try and keep in touch but something happens when u retire people don’t reach out or call. It’s almost like well we don’t see each other anymore so there goes the relationship or whatever. This is what happened to me and my very best friend moved to another state we use to do fun things together and talk a lot sharing world issues and daily stuff. It is true that it’s hard to motivate myself sometimes but I do and I stay on top of medical things, preparing meals and keeping a clean apartment and caring for my plants. My most difficult problem now is i suffer from facial hair on my chin area which is very hard to live with so I wax and try to do what I can to deal with this problem so this limits me from going out much due to having a mask 😷 all the time. Yes, life can change in many ways that is for sure.
You could try prayer if you don't already, it can be a two way conversation if you can be still and listen. I read the Bible and pray about what I read as it speaks to me and I sometimes just meditate on what I read and stay still to hear what God is saying to me.
I live in India. I worked for 30 years in a British Company but had to take Voluntary retirement because of my husband's transfer to a different city. I still had 15 years more to work. Being in a new place, different language and culture I was not happy. I was missing my office work. I was then 45 years. My daughter finished her graduation, my son passed his Class 12th. They were still studying. I started going to Old Homes every week carrying goodies etc to cheer them. I took them for Eye check ups whenever they needed. I felt happy. Other days I started catering muffins, patties to Schools. I was settled with my routine. Now I am 78 years, living with my husband. Children are married, living in different Cities. Every day I have my fixed timings for every thing. After washng my self and dressing, I start my day with prayers. Then Excercises, breakfast, dusting the house, watering my plants, Bible Study, and then lunch. After lunch I watch News and then take 1 hour nap. Evenings I hardly step out because I get severe pain in my ankles so I sit in my balcony and watch outside. I love animals and feed milk to a stray cat. Sundays we go to Church. I prepare special non-veg for lunch. I love cooking and baking. Every Christmas we go to our daughter in different city. There I bake Christmas cakes, brownies and other mouth watering goodies for every relative and for visitors. We stay with our daughter and her family for a fortnight. During Christmas and New Year time I meet my sisters too. Financially I am not too sound but God is my helper and taking good care and doing miracles. I thank and praise God and am so grateful to Him.
I find that faith in my loving God is essential. The bible's truths and advice for life help keep me stable when things get too difficult or confusing.
Rock & Roll times on You Tube become my drugs of choice. The music was always a solitary love, and it still is. I play roulette..... I never know what I'll encounter, and I never feel short-changed. Coffee and the Jive Five. It's heaven. And I like that Proco Harem.
Getting older at 66, I live downstairs in a house where my daughter and her kids live upstairs and I love to hear the kids and I love to interact with them but I don't have to have the responsibility for them which is absolutely wonderful! In addition, I have a little online business that keeps me really busy and a couple of cats and I play classical piano so that's something I do all the time and reading, daily walks outside. it's a really ideal situation to be close to family. I think that's one thing Americans have lost. Is the older people living near or with their families like they do in other cultures. It provides a spectrum of experience for the children as well. That is valuable.
The whole West has lost it. Honestly, I always feel a mix of annoyance and amusement because so many Americans seem to think that the USA ìs the West. 😳🤔

With pets, make sure that they will be taken care of if something happens to you. This is so important. If you are old enough do not get young pets. Go to the "Pound" and get an older animal.
Totally agree. My older friend adopted a kitten and said, "Oh my niece will care for the kitten when I die." What a lie she told herself. I've never had a cat who did NOT live to be at least 15 years old. Poor thing.
One of the good reasons to have a pet of a positive breed and an insurance plan for it, is that it will be easier for somebody whom the pet already knows to take over, if you suddenly die or become very unable to care for the pet yourself. One has to take responsibility for the continued care of the pet and be proactive for a smooth transition, even if it is best alternative that you outlive your pet, of course, so we petowners have to be very mindful about staying our strongest and healthiest, body and mind... and especially a dog helps a lot, reciprocally.
One of the best things about living alone as an older adult (I'm 81) is that I have time to think. I have spent much time going over the ups and downs of my life and coming to terms spiritually with who I am and that has made me happy, contented and at peace with myself.
(78male, lost my wife last year, 52 yrs married) I have to say to myself out loud very regularly, "Don't think of the past, just thank God I got through it!" - too depressing, I think ahead, how can this or that be done to best effect. Greetings to everyone from New Zealand.
During lockdown I got into Classic Corrie. When you live alone it is good to hear voices. I find the humour in the program helps. I avoid grim dialogue, I watch Tv to be entertained and laugh.
I am retired, 71 and I live alone. Living alone gives me the time to think about what kind of person I was in the past and what kind of person I am today. I can look at my Spiritual failures and take the necessary steps to correct them. I have grown closer to God and have become more tolerant of my fellow man. God Bless all the older people out there who live solitary lives.
Me too, Hon, I take time to read God's Word and think what I can do to help someone else. I live with son and his family. I don't get in their business of life and they don't always understand that I enjoy being in my room alone. Life is good.

Thank you for this post. I was old and alone and fine. Independent and healthy. Then I wasn't after I blacked out and fell out of my computer chair. No one can see that I am suffering horribly. I am functional. That's it. Can't drive. Weak. Dizzy, off balance. Undescribable feelings in my body. I wish you well and so understand what you are saying. I never felt lonely, even with no family around and few friends left. Until this year and a half. Bless you.💓🙏
I've lived alone since the mid-1970's and have never, ever regretted it or felt lonely. Couldn't stand roomates and definitely wasn't interested in a spouse. I've enjoyed making my way in life and making my own choices. 50 years of bliss. I own my own home and never have to worry about a divorce making me homeless. As a woman, having one's own money and home allows one to make choices out of desire rather than necessity or fear. I would never do it any other way. So growing older is just an extension of having lived my life. Except now without the pressure of work - yay freedom!
@user-de8mu8xh9.. “Silence is golden.” If you don’t like it you can always put on music or TV, join a group(s), or go to a public place like coffee shop..
I was looking forward to the silence when I retired but a strange family have moved above me with a child with Autism and what would seem to be a learning disability - she bangs loudly on the wooden floor (my ceiling) continuously every 20 seconds for hour after hour. The ceiling is low and it sounds as though she is in my apartment. Unfortunately the parents seem to think she is normal. I am looking to move house. So I envy you the peace and quiet of the silence.

Yes. Years ago I read a novel where one character said, "I know money can't buy happiness but try being happy without it." So true! It's pretty scary to think of being old without money.
One thing I've noticed about living alone as I get elderly now (71) is I just get used to my own world, my own routines, the peacefulness of where I live, meal routines, and when I sleep and wake up. That's fine. Is it? Nope sometimes. I now get quite stressed if I have to go outside my own "zone", fit with unusual routines. I have realised my stress levels really elevate even if I have to go out to town for something! Or go out for a meal with friends (who all lunch, and I never do!) I’m nearly 82 & have been on my own since my beloved husband died, I miss him every day but I am never bored,I have the radio for company,as I like debates, & music, apart from keeping my home, and myself clean,& cook my meals,I go out for a walk morning,& afternoon, sometimes I make myself go,as I know I shall see something to stimulate me,& have a chat to someone,we put the world to rights,& I go home satisfied,my aim in life is to keep healthy,my motto to life is “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it” So onwards & upwards, to grow old is a privilege,so make the most of each day,we’re dead a long time, the world is beautiful,so enjoy it every day.
I’m 62…I’ve been alone on my own for over 10 yrs. No one has been to my apt in yrs…my choice. Ive been to one social gathering this yr…by design. I do not call people and I don’t take phone calls. I treasure and protect my time on my own…it’s my most valued lifestyle preference that I have. I go exploring, I travel, hike and backpack, dine out, see shows…and I love doing all of those things ALONE! Your video has some validity, but not for all of us.
I'm impressed, not only by what you posted here, but also by the choices that you have made to guard your privacy and your solitary lifestyle. You are a person who is honoring the importance and value of being alone. Good for you for sticking up for what you believe works for you.
@@wandasciarrino7466 you’re absolutely right, but a person’s introverted personality and lifestyle preferences don’t just change after living that way for 5 decades. My preferences are the deepest roots of how my brain is wired. If I can’t function alone then it’s better for me to call it. Forcing me to live and interact w others is the same as asking me to flap my arms and fly to the moon. For me it would be the same as a prison sentence, and untenable.
@@DesertlizzyThemmm…not a hermit…I live in a large city, and I work in the service industry so I see and interact w ppl all the time. I separate my personal needs from my financial ones. Decluttering is the hardest. I have 2 storage units, plus a 2-bdrm apt which is over-flowing. I am 81 years old, in good health. I just can't mentally face this challenge. My family is troublesome to me. I hesitate to have unknown people into my apt. Excellent article. Thank you.

@@AngelBabe Well, it makes you feel that way. I was shocked to find that my high-end possessions were not wanted by anyone: thrift stores, consignments, charities (they all want cash). I put things out on the street "for free." Finally, when I had to be out if my house by midnight due to sale, I put all my furniture out on the street. Got into the moving van and drove off. You probably have an emotional attachment to everything you own so it is hard to deculter. Take a picture of the things taking up space and get rid of them. If you miss them in the future you'll have a of them to look at. That's what I do and it has worked out fine for me. Good luck!
As a Christian, I am never really alone. Probably a lot of other Christians will understand. I enjoy reading God's word, praying, praising the Lord in gratitude! He speaks to me through His word and in my spirit. I have wonderful times with the Lord! I do enjoy people also, but do not have a social network like when younger. Being alone with God and seeking Him can be truly a Joyous time of growing closer to Jesus. ✝️❤
As a 79 yr old i ca identify with a lot here..however i read ,have a good video liberary.and a dog, also i as a christian i go to church not to meet people but it is the high moment of my life when i really invite the risen lord into my life and cherish Him as a very close companion who i confide in in total confidence and am open to the promptings of the holy spirit.my day consists of prayer, cooking, house cleaning and walking the dog.i read and look at tv just for a few hours and keep up with the news listening to the radio aswell.lhope if you ar reading this do not be lonely,be alone its ok..but not lonely
I am blessed with the sanity and comfort that living alone has given me. I’m my own best friend, my own caregiver and creativity abounds ! All worth waiting for, Amen !
All these points in this video are things to keep in mind but reading these comments will show that most people are just fine with living alone and you have many options available to prevent boredom or loneliness. In fact it seems most people prefer their solitude.
There's a All-one-oness about enjoying your own company. I've found I take people on a case by case basis in passing for the most part, which satisfies. Two long distance friends for phone talk. Contentment says it all.
A great video I really enjoyed it. I’m 83 and widowed 6 years ago after 54 years of marriage. I loved my husband dearly and would love to have him back. However I have been fine and am enjoying life on my own. I realise that marriage was a compromise it has to be. I have been brave enough to fly abroad on my own for a couple of holidays, I took my granddaughter on a Caribbean cruise, got another dog ( a rescue ) changed the garden layout to make it easier and declutterred. I do everything mentioned in your video and it works. I wish everyone happiness and peace in old age.
I always had cats. Now I have a small dog. She loves life and other people. When she wakes up, she jumps up as if to say: 'Great! Another day!' So funny. She's great companion and keeps me active. Thanks to her I meet and talk to a lot of people. I even made a best friend. A woman who lives nearby and gives me the feeling I belong. My husband died. I don't have children. I'm an introvert. But this tiny dog really helps me staying cheerful and social. The most important thing for me is taking good care of me and my dog. I love clothes and even when I'm not going anywhere, I'm well-dressed cause it gives me a good feeling. The hardest thing for me is house work, cleaning and cooking. I hate a mess but I just don't have the energy to do a good job. That really annoys me and worries me. I love music and singing. And there's nobody who says: 'Keep it down.' I grew up with five siblings and never had any privacy. Now I do and I love it.
Looking good Hettie! L don't have children either but still have a husband, he is a keen fisherman, we are both 72. I would get a little dog too if I was left alone. I do have a strong faith and prayer life that sustains me a lot.
Now 80, retired and living alone I agree with the points made in this excellent video. Keep in mind that the wrong partner can make your life miserable and personal freedom is wonderful compensation for solitude. No drama and stress enables satisfaction with everyday life.🥰🥰🥰🥰
I'm pleased I've listened to this; I thought I was the only one who felt this way about chores etc. My health is a little compromised and thats the hardest thing for me. I've learned to accept what I cannot change and to try to stay positive. I've been in a deep, dark place since my husband died but all I can do is to try to keep going. My thoughts are with all those who are struggling..
@@Christine-j7b Prayer is wonderful, and it works! Thank you for offering it to this individual, as it was very kind of you to take the time to express your concerns.
My neighbors 85 and 88 have spent two full days a week cleaning all their lives and their house was always immaculate. At this time, they realized it was too dangerous to be climbing or too hard cleaning floors. They had a housekeeper come every two weeks to do the hard chores. They still clean and keep up with the little stuff. They also hired a gardener to mow the lawn even though they did that for years. They know when to ask for help 😊
@@Appzeei sadly not everyone can afford a Housekeeper and a Gardner. Everything begins to fall apart and becomes overgrown and before you know it things are insurmountable.
There's one thing that helps all of us, or we wouldn't be here. The internet ! So wonderful for continued learning, social chats, following & discussing shared interests, discussing news, watching "how to" videos, communicating with loved ones overseas or interstate, getting riled up about politics, world affairs, and seeing how others less fortunate are having to live. It's all here at our fingertips if we're lucky enough. ❤
I am 73 years old, retired, and have lived alone for more than 20 years. This video is so accurate. I have never been this happy in my life. It's wonderful. Every day is an exciting time to live.
Physical activity is most important. A hot cup of coffee, confidence, knowing you belong in this world are all important. Be confident, indifferent, and stay active.
In my 79th year, hubby died 15 years ago, never went on a date, have a busy life gardening, doing choirs around the house, prepare my breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. I have no problem at all in living alone. Many men says I should go out on dates because they think I am in my 50ties, but I just say I am too old, this way they leave me alone, which is good for me.
@@totallynieve7108 Cats make all the difference. There is no love like a cat's love. My sweet boy got really sick and had to be put to sleep almost a year ago now. The house is so empty without him. We loved each other so much. I am thinking of fostering cats now. I might do it.
My wife died 5 years ago. We had been married for 55 years. I have been a woodworker for many years and continue to work in my shop and even though I change my wood projects I still find interest in making things to give away. I have a dog as a partner and she keeps me on the move.
So many people equate alone with lonely. I am 82 and have lived alone for 50 years. When I was younger, I had a very active social life and many friends. My last long-time friend died in April and I am now really alone except for the cats. It's strange to realize that I have outlived almost everyone I know. I miss having a shared history with others and never will have that again. When mobility and health issues show up, it is frustrating to be unable to do all the things you once did without giving it a thought. Your video talks about organizing get togethers. That's impossible if all your friends have died. I spent most of my youth raising my sons and then caring for my family so it's nice to have absolutely no responsibility towards anyone except myself. I honestly like the peace, quiet and solitude.
Laurel Curtis I can totally relate to that you have said. I too have outlived almost all of my long time friends. I have two left that are still alive but i do not live close to them. I am going to get a newer truck so i have reliable transportation and I am going to drive to Warsaw, Missouri where my friend Kenny lives and also out to Beaumont, California where my friend Bill lives. I I've in San Pedro, California and have been putting it off for far too long.
Excellent video. I always remind myself how truly alone you can feel with the wrong people in your life. Also, there is alone and there is lonely, which are distinctly different.
I'm 71, single, and retired. My adopted kids are now in college. And I *love* living alone! I have a daily routine, exercise, and read a lot of books, and often have videos or audiobooks going, as mentioned in this video. I participate in online clubs and venture out at times for in-person groups, but my favorite days are always at home alone. I enjoyed the video and the online comments.
Living alone will change your life. You come into this life alone, and leave as well. Good to have that safety net. And a good walk outside is a good thing.
At 75 five years ago, I reslised I was failing with exercise. So I built a simple spreadsheet and determined to hike, with poles, 6 kilometers per day. That thing drives me, but now, at 80, I am fit and have purpose. I'm quite proud too of seeing over 10,000 kms of "overall total".
I'm the same my husband passed away june this year, the night time and morning are the worst, I have the tv on even though I'm not watching it ,its company ❤

I’m 77 and my husband died 12 yr ago. I live alone. At first I was active. I volunteered at the local soup kitchen in the pantry. I met new people and friends . Had about 5 yrs of that then injured my back. Had 2 long surgeries and practically became invalid. 2 of my new friends died and one moved into a nursing home. Last 6 years I’m totally alone. I eat frozen meals mostly because it easy. I have 2 small dogs, which has become my dearest companions. They give me joy and purpose. I have a strict schedule. Up at 7am sleep at 11. I don’t walk well because of my back and surgeries. I fall a lot. I’m quite small so I don’t get badly hurt with these falls. Sometimes I can’t get up so I have to figure out how. I had a stair lift put in in 2017 but now broken. It’s outside so corrosion took over. I’m doing the stairs now. Very difficult but I make myself do it. Few things I can’t do. Mowing grass and changing my bed. I do have a daughter and 2 grand children. They will do it but not on a timely basis. I really dont want to live with anyone. I do keep my great granddaughter 2 hrs after school . It helps her and helps to fill my day. I was very lonely at first but now I wouldn’t want anyone around all the time.
When I had difficulty changing .my bed I would get a person to put on three sheets and peeled them off as I needed and throw a duve on ...another alternative Is a sleeping bag with a bag style sheet 😊
You sound like you put forth effort to be at peace with your circumstances and blessed to have grandchild I hope someone will notice your needs and help you with repairs
I am 64 and have lived alone all my adult life. Only time I have issues while living alone is if I have to have a medical procedure done and need someone to take me home. That can be difficult. But having access to the internet helps big time. I can interact with people on social media and it helps with not having someone to talk to. For the most part, I am very happy. Do what I want when I want to do it. Taking care of my cat, who is a great companion.
I live in an apartment complex and have no family. The apartment management never checks in on you and your neighbors don’t think to check on you either. The world needs to change and we help each other. 😢
Maybe you can change circumstances at your apartment complex you start smiling at people when you come in contact say hello start friendly chat.ask how they doing you may just be surprised. How.many people in your complex need that it.mighy seem like nit working at first but be persistent and you will see good results and more and .more people will take time to chat to check.on each other building a friend ship takes time
I agree. . Since I'm independent, health and financially independent, my son and daughter RARELY call me and ask if I need anything. There are rare instances where I could use some assistance with some physical task. Thank goodness, God has blessed me with good neighbors, who actually call me to as if I need anything. I don't complain. God sees and provides. So grateful.
Ppl have lives as our younger selves did. I love the idea our kids are busy. Means they are independent usually. None of our kids are gonna fall apart when I leave this earth. I take GREAT HONOR in that I once showed my kids how to manage life and now I can show them this phase of life without being needy. And they show me the same.
I am lazy, I don't think I have to do anything except if I want to and whenever I want to. I don't feel overly upset that I am not a social butterfly. I am thrilled to have to do nothing if I don't want to. I don't mind being alone most of the time; I enjoy peace and quiet. I am pretty content with my life right now and don't seem to have any complaints worth making any issues over.
People are too busy trying to figure out life in this troubled economy . No one has time or interest in older folks ,unless we have some money for them , When you get old you simply dont matter very much
I find that smiling at people, even have a chat while shopping, light up their day aswel. We have a good laugh even if we don't know each other at all. It works and makes my day.....take care oldies..❤❤❤❤❤❤

I lived with a narcissist for years so living alone is like freedom!! I GRT lonely sometimes but am not afraid to go places alone. I have some friends but they are often busy. I enjoy walks and binge watching good tv shows and movies. I also have two cats who like to cuddle.
yes, getting free from a narcissist is amazing. I ended a relationship with someone I thought was a close friend, (but realized she was a wolf in sheep's clothing) and also a family member, both of whom were draining me, and actually sometimes cruel. I love the peace of not hearing from them (blocked both). Living alone is so peaceful but you have to get rid of toxic people who want to drain you...
I'm 75yrs old, soon to be 76 in a few months. There are so many things you can change, if you get a little lonely. I joined a meet up group once. It was very fulfilling for me. There are so many different groups to choose from. There are travel clubs, cooking clubs, dinner and lunch meet and greet, art clubs, exercise groups movie nights, just to mention a few. When the holidays approaches, I still make plans to either cook my own festive meals, with all the trimmings or get with a meet up group for a holiday meal out. Idon't have relatives in the town I live, but I do have a few friends that I occasionally enjoy spending leisure time with. I found that downsizing for me was a good choice. I live in a great apartment complex. I don't personally know all my neighbors, but the apartment complex i live in, often have meet your neighbor events, pizza night and sometimes even weekend coffee and pastry mornings for residents. I do sometimes volunteer to help with feeding the homeless, which i really enjoy, because i get to meet and help others. I truly believe that helping others can give you a sense of purpose and satisfaction
Living with the grief of losing my wife has been the hardest, but I definitely agree that self care and a strict fitness regime is very important. I also go out everyday to interact with people, there’s a big difference between being alone and being lonely.

Living alone yes its peaceful, your own boss, no one to answer to but if you have no visitors like family etc, it is the most depressing and saddest thing in the world trust me I have tried it.
I have to agree with you . I turned 60 about a month ago. I've been divorced and have lived alone for over the past 10 years. I have a few friends but they're all married or have significant others. So, I'm a little out of place with them. I have no family left. So.... it's just me and the dog. They're are times when my phone doesn't ring with a call or a text for days. Loneliness is everything its cracked up to be. But.... there's worse things I suppose
I feel the same.. I love nature and wildlife,my pets but since losing my partner of 45 years, I feel very lonely at times...when I FEEL PHYSICALLY Able to get stuck in to household chores and my garden, it's not so bad but when you feel in total pain and have other health issues, it's far more difficult to keep happy... I believe in God so he is a great comfort.. wishing you all well and joy always xx
At 78, I’ve lived on my own for many years. I do have a cat and take many precautions. I actually do take my phone with me when I take a shower. I love living alone.
This all sounds great. However if financially your not in a good place, it’s very hard. Worst of all is if you have health issues that prevent you from being very active. And making friends is very hard. Being old n alone sucks.
I'm loving my retirement so far! My wife and I worked hard to reach this point - we're both retired, debt-free, and fortunate to have over $3 million in net worth. We achieved this through a saving and investing lifestyle in the stock market, which now generates weekly income for us. And now, we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor! We're traveling, golfing, and spending quality time with the grandkids. We feel grateful to be living smart and frugal, making the most of our golden years.

Patricia, obviously you are on the internet so you are internet savvy. There is a MeetUp site for all sorts of things-hobbies or even social things-the divorce rate is still 50%, plus spouses pass-especially for women there are a lot of ways to connect. Many malls have walking groups in the morning-
I am a 78 yr. Old widow, for the past 7 yrs. So far I am doing good, I walk 60 min. a day & do 30 min. of exercises daily.Have many good friend that I can call on any time. I am so blessed. Love to cook & bake.
My best friend is 91 this year. He is fully mobile, good eye sight. His wife died 40 years ago. His secret? He is always busy, he visits friends, relatives, people from church. Church is very important for social interaction, especially the church groups, the craft groups. He goes to so many lectures and talks. If you sit in a room staring at the walls all day, you’ll degrade and die.
Yes, all of this is true. At 74, all of them are addressed, and I'm not 100% certain I wish to live out my life alone. Keeping it in prayer and watching for what may be a viable arrangement with a friend or family member. In the meantime, I'm content in my apartment, there are helpful neighbors all around me and we support one another with whatever is going on.
Prayer was an important part of our married life, we did it for each other, but now alone I struggle to keep to the 3 times ritual but strongly believe in it, of course its great to share difficulties or uncertainty with God at any point. Just remember God will only hear you through your acceptance and love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
I ❤ living alone !! I shut off my phone a lot because I don't want to convert. I have 2 dog's so I take my health seriously because of them . I cook for them , I sleep with them . Both are 9ver a 100 lbs . I have needed help getting up off the floor and they come right over to help . They pick up anything I drop and clean my dishes 😂 . I have spine issues so as I get older I will make sure I get meals on wheels and other means of being checked on . Moved from Boston Massachusetts to West Virginia Appalachia. I am at peace for the first time in my life . I've been here for almost 4 years with no regret ❤❤❤
I listen to books as I work in the house. I have a part time job I love. I am 71 and my husband passed a way last year. I share my house with my college age daughter. I have always been social and am enjoying choosing what I want to do now. I listen to music 🎶 a lot of times. I am so grateful for the blessings I have.
Living alone with mobility issues and no support group means everything costs more. Groceries, clothes etc must be delivered. If you don’t live in a urban area there are few inhome dentists. Visiting vets are few and far between (I can no longer have a furry friend - not fair to the animal) “Even vacuuming can be difficult” - try vacuuming with a walker.
Buy a Roomba! I am 83 and was diagnosed with RA last year and my Roomba has been a life saver. The only problem I have now vacuuming is the stairs. When my family comes to visit every 3 or 4 months, I have one of them doing it for me
@@pcalger1163 Well there is that! It has happened to me. Now I just keep and eye on it when I think it is time for the battery to be recharged. Then I just pick it up and take it over to be recharged. Obviously it is not a perfect solution but it's better than using a vacuum, at least for me
I’d rather live alone than to be married and still feel alone.
Living alone, you know your heart can be broken if you lose your spouse. You will never have that sadness of losing someone or you die and break someone's heart. Hey! its great and I am not lonely. Too many things to do.to be lonesome. I am soon to be 74 and thank God I am still healthy.

I turn 76 next month and have lived alone since I was 43, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the silence, the solitude and not having to compromise.
Being able to take naps whenever I like is absolutely wonderful !!!!!!
There was a TV show which I can't remember where David Spade was one of the main characters and while talking to two married couples, and him being single, he said "well I'm going to go and do... whatever I want."

4:36 hi, I agree. God has become my best friend.
'God' appears as a bright light to dead people. That's about it. Apart from the very few living people who have a distinct spiritual experience, he doesn't appear to be doing anything. When is this God going to get up off his holy arse and do something down here to improve the world and prove he exists?

My handyman brother can't find his way to help me even though he is well equipped to do so and I so much love when he comes for a day every two years but when I ask, he is too "busy”. Family and friends, passed on and as a Trump supporter even telephone friends are gone because I don't agree with their political ideas. You may think I must be an awful person but like to listen and help others even though as an empath I am very sensitive and easily overwhelmed by people’s difficulties.

Having lost many beloved companions over the years, I know that their absence leaves a permanent void every time.
Even the oldest and most sedentary pet creates a definite emptiness when they leave us. From your comment it is clear that you provided a warm & loving home for your cat, and by letting him go when the time was right was an enormous gift as well as sacrifice.

Or go out for a meal with friends (who all lunch, and I never do!) It's so silly to get stressed over nice things like that! I cannot wait to get home.
Understand perfectly seldom want to leave my home
I got like you a few years ago. And I also love being alone. However, I had no idea what was happening to me when I went out close by to the library or across the street for fish and chips and I couldn't feel my feet as I was walking. I was startled to find that I was actually having panic attacks. My doctor diagnosed this and also warned me to get out more as living too much in your own world can give you a form of agoraphobia which I didn't even realize I was experiencing.
@@susancrawford5927- true. I suffer agoraphobia. First due to trauma, that intensified due to being home constantly. Then depression..I hope to get out some more eventually.

I think one of the worse things about 'lunching with friends' - especially those who don't live alone, too - is that you hear about ALL their 'family troubles', who is ill, who died....UGH. You feel worse, not better, for the experience ! So I'd just as soon stay home with the dog and spend time in the garden with him, or get some take-out food that I like, and pop a favorite movie into the player, and watch it, instead ! LESS hassle.

So, I'm a little out of place with them. I have no family left. So.... it's just me and the dog. They're are times when my phone doesn't ring with a call or a text for days. Loneliness is everything its cracked up to be. But.... there's worse things I suppose

Absolutely! I'm in the same boat. I just got back from a road trip across the country. It's amazing how much energy and freedom we have now. Make the most of it, because it won't last forever!
I'm a young dad and I'm really glad to hear your story - it inspires me! I'm still working, but I'm counting down the days until I can enjoy the Go Go Years. Can you please share your tips? What's the key to achieving this milestone and making the most of your retirement years? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Some things that keep me fit at 78. Get lots of sun exposure, swim daily in sea water, push my body to continue doing doing out of breath walking, chopping wood etc. Eating a macrobiotic style diet of rice beans vegetables seaweed fish for 40 plus years heips. Most important stay clear of the medical business if you can, as no one but yourself knows you better. Must be an advocate for yourself. When I feel down the best remedy is giving love and help to others. Thank you for this video, and all the best with blessings from New Rochelle N.Y. Bruce the swimmer.
Just lost my husband 4 weeks ago. (78). It has been good for me to listen to this video and read all the comments. I realize I am not alone..Lost my mother 6 months ago to cancer. Its been a rough year.
I love living alone. If I want interaction with people I go out and hook up with person for brief conversation. I have lots of interests and run 2 miles daily (slowly) and I interact with my neighbors that way. Saved a life one day on run. I grow huge garden and share bounty with many people in loyal community. I attend quilting group in fall, winter and spring. The outdoors is everything and birds are my friends. Cathy from northern ME
I’m 78 living along since 2020. Live up north and during winter I take my 40ft RV and travel south. Stopping here and there till spring!
Loving life till I die.
This video actually made me cry because it describes exactly what I’m going through. Sometimes the loneliness is Unbearable. But the video also made me realize that I’m not alone. Great video
Patricia, obviously you are on the internet so you are internet savvy. There is a MeetUp site for all sorts of things-hobbies or even social things-the divorce rate is still 50%, plus spouses pass-especially for women there are a lot of ways to connect. Many malls have walking groups in the morning-
Glad you enjoyed it! Take care
I am a 78 yr. Old widow, for the past 7 yrs. So far I am doing good, I walk 60 min. a day & do 30 min. of exercises daily.Have many good friend that I can call on any time. I am so blessed. Love to cook & bake.
That's great! Keep it up.
That’s amazing! You’re crushing it!
Great attitude keep.it always God bless
Thanks for sharing!!That is awesome!
My arthritis is severe. My house is dirty. Vacuuming is painful.
Use a office swivel chair cordless vac go around vac sitting down helps alot
Buy a Roomba! I am 83 and was diagnosed with RA last year and my Roomba has been a life saver. The only problem I have now vacuuming is the stairs. When my family comes to visit every 3 or 4 months, I have one of them doing it for me
@@irmibullinger1421 I always worry about it ending up under a piece of furniture never to be seen again
@@pcalger1163 Well there is that! It has happened to me. Now I just keep and eye on it when I think it is time for the battery to be recharged. Then I just pick it up and take it over to be recharged. Obviously it is not a perfect solution but it's better than using a vacuum, at least for me
