You know you've reached the pinnacle of badassery when your enemies see fit to send a squadron of fight jets to blitz you. I always loved the odds in games like this.
@@weirddudehi you're not crazy. It actually happened quite a few times. Like the Genesis version of the first Mortal Kombat game has better music than the arcade, across the board. Both the versions of songs that are identical in terms of writing but just performed with different "instruments" i.e. the genesis sound chip, but also the songs that were actually changed or even replaced by new songs that were written differently. I find it disappointing to play the actual arcade version of Mortal Kombat because the genesis version just has the better soundtrack by far.
AWESOME!!! I've been trying to re-find this game since the 90's! I could never remember the name. I only ever tried it on my Amiga but now 100% going to try the Megadrive version. You've genuinely made my so thank you! :D
"Pretty bad port, Amiga version was better in every regard!" You mean 100% the other way around right? Music in the Genesis version kicks ass, it doesn't have a bug making everything look dark, it controls better, it runs smoother, and is as good as the arcade. Actually, scratch that! It's BETTER than the arcade, and by a long shot!
I thought the story is about rescuing your family from a drug cartel? Yet you even go to outer space to fight an alien boss head? The whole trip is one drug powered fantasy!
I just got it today and it's totally awesome! The bit where [SPOILER..........SPOILER] you're running backwards under the waterfalls shooting at the enemies and tanks behind you is a blast! Such a fun game. The music is epic too.
I used to play this when I was a kid. I had forgotten the name of this game but always remembered the variety of guns and ammunition. So glad I found this!!!!.
yes ! they sold reuse this sunset for the ending like in the other ports , they tried to copy the arcade ending, but with Sega's poor color pallet the ending sunrise looks like shit :( BTW the arcade sunset and ending sunrise are just incredible
Hello from the future! Did you ever play the Amiga version? I reckon that was equal to the arcade version, a tad better than the MD version. The future isnt anything to get excited about btw, hover boards aren't even a thing..... yet.
While I love the Amiga's music, I have to say the Mega Drive version also has some good songs... but it's just not the same game without "Pick A Weapon!" =p
Amiga music sounds embarrassing for its hardware capabilities. And this is said by an Amiga user with 10 years of experience :) I'm just not a fanboy and I'm looking at this in hindsight and sober :)
This is the closest competition to a Contra game you will ever get. Midnight Resistance was a real winner!. Gotta love the gameplay and grooving soundtrack.
lol @the video description, another troll isn't it? Seems obvious since: -> Amiga version of Midnight Resistance = no intro; no parallax scrollings; no sound effects... while the Mega Drive version has all of this. -> Amiga version runs in a tiny window with a huge HUD bar while it's the opposite case on Mega Drive. -> also the Mega Drive version has better and more appropriate music IMO compared to the "flute rendition" on Amiga. So indeed the Amiga version is "better in every regard!" xD Fact: the only advantage of the Amiga version is that it has co-op option (and it's quite strange that it's not the case with the Mega Drive version, even more considering other Mega Drive run 'n guns such as Gunstar Heroes or Contra Hard Corps which not only have co-op but which are also much more impressive than Midnight Resistance) but other than that, the Mega Drive version is superior in every respects and is the best home port ;)
I'm really hoping the longplayer was just joking in the description, the Amiga version of this game comes nowhere near the level of the Genesis version. Heck, other than lack of two-player, I actually like the Genesis version better than the arcade version! The arcade music was bland and the graphics look overly saturated in comparison to the high-contrast Genesis version.
@Alianger Preach it brotha. And for me personally, it indeed my not have been the best contra style game, but it still was alot of fun thanks to that pumping soundtrack.
You're right about it being 2P co-op. I don't know why they didn't do that in either port, when both MD and Amiga were capable of handling multiplayer without any sort of issue. I don't care about the rotary joystick, SEGA's pad is just perfect, and the "classic Data East sound"... well, dunno, but I prefer the Genesis version here. That also applies for Vapor Trail.
This game came out years before the first Metal Slug game. In the 80s and 90s it was extremely common for side-scrolling shooter and space shoot em ups to have big ship bosses like this. It was just one of those things, a trope that tons of different games used, just like how platformers always had an ice level, and a water level, etc
This is one of the best games on the megadrive / genesis, no wonder it sells for pretty decent money now. I grew up playing the spectrum version, then the Amiga version which was excellent and had 2 player mode but overall I think this is the better version of the game despite the lack of a 2 player option.
I have no problems with this port Schlauchi, you know I love my old school games from your days in IRC on the old #cv channel. I bought this one recently and enjoy the heck out of it, Plays close enough to the arcade version and retains the campiness. I didn't grow up with an Amiga, or knew anyone who had it, but this is my version of Midnight Resistance I enjoy. :)
@ValisHD if it's any consolation, and if your fellows at Longplays haven't done it yet, you could request to do one of 1)Heavy Barrel (also made by Koji A.), 2) Thunder Zone, known in US as Desert Assault (the spiritual sequel of Bloody Wolf) or 3)one of my DataEast faves, Wolf Fang AKA Rohga Armor Force (the true sequel to Vapor Trail). I'll head to the website for the requests & see what goes.
It's so strange, I have distinct memories of this game's final boss, yet I swear I've never played or seen or heard of this game before. Was Midnight Resistance ever ported to or developed for anything else? EDIT: Just watched footage from the arcade version. I 100% remember the music now so it's quite possible this was one of the many games I emulated on MAME growing up. I played a lot of Data East games back then.
I still have this in my collection. BTW, the fire gun is the most powerful weapon in this game, unlike contra in which the spread gun is the most powerful.
I have the amiga and megadrive version and the amiga is a good conversion but could have been even better if the hardware was pushed. Amiga pros. Good controls, sampled speech 2player option. Pretty nice colors and animation. Megadrive pros sprites are more faithful to the arcade and has the full intro. Great music
bro i was looking for this game for the last 2 years but couldnt remember the name. Today i just remembered the last boss and typed in sega big head boss and it came up on the first result on images xD
There are different options for the controls. The first one just fires wherever you aim the d-pad. Others rotate the weapon in different ways. So you can run where you aim the d-pad and then hold the B button so your aim rotates as you run, then let go of B when it's set to where you want it. The "rotate" option of control feels very different for a few minutes then you quickly get used to it. Brilliant game with epic music. Quite an early one too (1990).
"Amiga port is better in every regard" i dont know anything about its gameplay but there is NO way an Amiga soundtrack is that much better than Hitoshi Sakimoto's masterpiece covers here.
Well, the problem in Amiga is always the same,no fullscreen, you play on a window, and only one button, but yeah...is not an horrible port like others,The reality is that the Amiga port was made by 4 people and the Megadrive by a huge Staff,as always.
I bet they would have ran into some serious sprite flicking issues if they had included the second player. Imagine two players firing multiple bullets with a couple of enemies on screen.
The sad part is that the C64 port has much better controls even though the C64 only has ONE action button (and yes i tried all the available control layouts in the genesis version) =P
Amiga, Genesis port... Blah, blah, blah!! That's not the real question, what you should really ask yourselves is: Who is that miterious lady driving the Jeep?
I'll have to soon, then I can direct you to our new channel. Sorry about replying late, was on vacation. And yes the Amiga pushed out some great music, the Genesis soundchip can't quite compare of course.
The Mega Drive's epic pumping music sounds a lot better on this game than the weedy Amiga music. They should have called the Amiga game Midnight Panpipes. It looks really good though, despite running in a small window and with the missing parallax scrolling and intro.
Hitoshi Sakimoto's custom sound engine is the reason why. The man is very talented when it comes to making music. Another game he did music for is Bad Omen for the Genesis, if you haven't heard the music to it, I recommend it.
As arcade ports from 1990 go, this is actually a pretty good port, and without question the best port of this game that exists. The arcade game isn't vastly different apart from the 2 player ability, and the Mega Drive music is far superior to the Arcade soundtrack.
Arcade = Classic Data East audio + two players + rotary joystick MD / GEN = Arranged audio by someone who worked on SSBB + only one player + no rotary joystick Amiga = Something to forget.
Music is awesome, the gfameplay and whole game is boring and blocky... I guess they wanted something like Gunstar heroes... But turned out kinda half-assed. Music is what soudns great in it!
The music is freaking awesome
Mad props to Hitoshi Sakimoto.
One of the best Bso arcade game
reminds me of MERCS music
The music, remains as phenomenal as the day I first heard it.
Hitoshi Sakamoto. 'nuff said.
He did not write the original though, these are (great) covers of the original arcade by Azusa Hara and Hiroaki Yoshida.
I still get chill on my back when this soundtrack plays after 32 years.
You know you've reached the pinnacle of badassery when your enemies see fit to send a squadron of fight jets to blitz you. I always loved the odds in games like this.
I love this game! I had it on the Commodore 64 & used to play over & over again for hours... great memories!
Great job. And still 1 of the best Genesis soundtracks ever created, regardless of critics.
Great soundtrack up there with Streets of Rage which is still my all time fav
Call me crazy but to me sounds better on Megadrive than in the Arcade.
@@weirddudehi you're not crazy. It actually happened quite a few times. Like the Genesis version of the first Mortal Kombat game has better music than the arcade, across the board. This music has 80s action movie written all over it!
I had this game day one back in the day! It's so epic in every way!
AWESOME!!! I've been trying to re-find this game since the 90's! I could never remember the name. I only ever tried it on my Amiga but now 100% going to try the Megadrive version. You've genuinely made my so thank you! :D

Gendo ruwo lmaooo🤣
Alien drug cartel?
This looks fucking awesome
I just got it today and it's totally awesome! The bit where [SPOILER..........SPOILER] you're running backwards under the waterfalls shooting at the enemies and tanks behind you is a blast! Such a fun game. The music is epic too.
Music kicked ass, couldn't remember anything about the game but I still remember the music over 30 years later. Took me forever to find.
Epic music and love the game
I used to play this when I was a kid. I had forgotten the name of this game but always remembered the variety of guns and ammunition. So glad I found this!!!!.
This music is too nostalgic. I love it
This game has arguably the 2nd best music soundtrack of all Genesis games (after SOR of course).
Rank Gauntlet IV up there as well. After all, same composer.
Believe it or not one of my favorites along with those is Super Thunder Blade.
Shnobi 2
You're missing Golden Axe. Revenge of Shinobi too. And Sonic 3
8:27 most epic scene in game
Takes down a whole fucking Air Force, no kidding!
yes ! they sold reuse this sunset for the ending like in the other ports , they tried to copy the arcade ending, but with Sega's poor color pallet the ending sunrise looks like shit :(
BTW the arcade sunset and ending sunrise are just incredible
Best version simply because the blue flamethrower is so A E S T H E T I C
awesome soundtrack!
"Pretty bad port, Amiga version was better in every regard!"
That's okay, everyone can be wrong sometimes!
Nops
18:34 "Murphy...it's you"
Haha! it's Robocop :)
KHAOE1
08:28 believe me .. this is what you're looking for 🔥🔥🔥
Indeed
I just picked this up at my local retro game store. Definitely a classic good game on the Sega Genesis 👌
the music on the genesis port is pretty good! :-D
pleasant smooth video quality along with the game's graphics. The best version after coin-ops in my opinion. Lovely work!

music at 1:35...s**t gets real
Midnight Resistance on the mega drive is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
With ABSOLUTELY AWESOME graphics and STUNNINGLY AMAZING Gameplay 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Best video game music ever
The music is top notch and this game is great! Even for a contra clone! This reminds me of Super turrican! =D
thumbs up if you think the sun at the end looks like a hard boiled egg in orange juice...
I always thought it looked more like a nuclear blast
Midnight Resistance on the mega Drive
Is Legendary and Awesome action 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Simply epic!
Never played this game before, but the music is awesome!

psyance totally agree
Agreed
There's always at least one div that claims everything was better on the Amiga.
Fantastic Contra clone. Man, I wish Sega would put this out on the Switch!
@Alianger Preach it brotha. And for me personally, it indeed my not have been the best contra style game, but it still was alot of fun thanks to that pumping soundtrack.

Minutes 6:21 Space Harrier stage 1 music?
Que buenos recuerdos, llegando del colegio, a jugar toda la tarde sega.
Data East had this weird choppiness to their Genesis arcade translations (2 Crude Dudes, Captain America) that I kinda like
15:12 isnt that ship boss from metal slug 3?
Manhunt2405 metal slug 3 doesn't have ship boss. Maybe 2.

Sound: YMOH.S
That's all you needed to know. Who developed the bad audio of the Amiga version again? Was it Zamfir?
I could never get past the jet fighter level. I remember I finally
killed them all and got hit by a stray missile. Cried all day that day
It's so strange, I have distinct memories of this game's final boss, yet I swear I've never played or seen or heard of this game before. Was Midnight Resistance ever ported to or developed for anything else?

8:33 - When I first played this I always thought that was the ship from Gradius.
Waiting,there come a remake
BEST SOUNDTRACK OF GENESIS
Eu não conhecia esse jogo. Muito bom!
I still have this in my collection.
BTW, the fire gun is the most powerful weapon in this game, unlike contra in which the spread gun is the most powerful.
I still miss Crimson King's laughter from the arcae version.

Joguei em 1991 como é da hora este jogo show
That's the same thing I did back wan I play this game
Contra?
I think the c64 version is the best lol
It's great too.
bro i was looking for this game for the last 2 years but couldnt remember the name. Today i just remembered the last boss and typed in sega big head boss and it came up on the first result on images xD
미래지향적인 게임.:-)
There just isn't another Genesis game that has this sort of audio quality
@7:45 how did you run forward and shoot backward?
There are different options for the controls. The first one just fires wherever you aim the d-pad. Others rotate the weapon in different ways. 19 minutes game????????
I hate the control scheme they used in this longplay. It's great seeing a game I grew up playing again!
я прошел в юнности лет в 14-15. На картридже сегамегадрайв2 с надписью Contra7. был 1999 год. золотое время! Кстати если чо - мой псн уин : Eizekeb
Have to say the soundtrack on this version was pretty good. Great vid!
I bet they would have ran into some serious sprite flicking issues if they had included the second player. Imagine two players firing multiple bullets with a couple of enemies on screen.
That' not the problem since contra hard corps is in terms of grafics way superior and I don't see any flickering even in co-op mode
The sad part is that the C64 port has much better controls even though the C64 only has ONE action button (and yes i tried all the available control layouts in the genesis version) =P
Game has several slowdowns.
Yeah, have to agree, amiga version isn't as good as this, I like the music and sounds in this version alot more then the amiga one.
very good
nice game
Amiga, Genesis port... Blah, blah, blah!! That's not the real question, what you should really ask yourselves is: Who is that miterious lady driving the Jeep?
Payasoplas Yes, I suppose she is quite angular/pious, isn't she?
Not the best Contra style game, but at least the soundtrack was excellent in this version.
fun contra clone
wtf?! DAD...MOM...SIS.... lol
I'll have to soon, then I can direct you to our new channel. Sorry about replying late, was on vacation. And yes the Amiga pushed out some great music, the Genesis soundchip can't quite compare of course.

It was a poor mans contra game.
at least it has some original features that contra didn't have.
also genesis version is pretty bad port, arcade version is way better.
Human runner Well, the Genesis was more expensive than the NES at the time so "poor mans" is not really the term i would use.
As arcade ports from 1990 go, this is actually a pretty good port, and without question the best port of this game that exists. The arcade game isn't vastly different apart from the 2 player ability, and the Mega Drive music is far superior to the Arcade soundtrack.
Arcade has two players + classic Data East sound + rotary joysticks.
This just was contra for sega
slowdown on a genisis. alot going on it seems.
I vastly prefer the Genesis version's music myself. The amiga version sounds like panflutes.
Arcade = Classic Data East audio + two players + rotary joystick
MD / GEN = Arranged audio by someone who worked on SSBB + only one player + no rotary joystick
Amiga = Something to forget.
superior by the music , but the ugly ending ..... they tried like in arcade, but with poor sega palette ,no way. The arcade sky is just incredible
It could look much better with the actual Genesis palette but seems like they choose the wrong colors.
Music is awesome, the gfameplay and whole game is boring and blocky...
I guess they wanted something like Gunstar heroes... But turned out kinda half-assed. Music is what soudns great in it!
What are you talking about it looks just like the arcade game.
No way. The Amiga version sucks balls compred to this.
