    I grew up next-door to the factory that makes the REAL meals. Every day of the week, from 7am-5pm it oozed the most wondrous mouth-watery scents of all kinds of dinners. I thought it was some kind of restaurant back then.

    I'm Norwegian and they make civilian types for hiking as well. I bought a few of every meal they produce for emergency, which was enough for about 4 months. In the uncertanty of early 2020, I lived off these and I can recommend every one they make. First thing I did was to see if I could buy stocks, but alas.

    My favorite to use the liver patè, is on a slice of light bread topped with rootbeat(I belive it`s called, rødbete in Norwegian. red beat directly translated). very healty, energy and iron rich. Stir the main meal well before resealing after adding hot water, then all ingrediants will hydrate pretty well perfect. A tasty meal in the field in Nordic challanging winter conditions is a boost for your spirit and curage, probobly in any field situation. A good meal is very important for a soldier! I use theese DryTech civil meals for hiking all the time on longer trips, just perfect

    We Norwegians typically do drink coffee just straight black - sometimes we add milk, but very rarely creamer or sugar. I guess that's what makes us the 2nd biggest consumer of coffee in the world (per capita) :D Oh, and the liver pâte is a very common topping on bread for kids in school etc.

      Milk in the coffee is disgusting to be fair! Black coffee is the best!

    norwegian gas stations have this cheese hotdog wrapped in bacon, and I've heard stories about how much the u.s. soldiers stationed here love it

      Facts, worked at a gas station for 8 years in an area where us, dutch, british and german millitarty do winter training yearly and for the duration of their stay we would always make double to triple the amount of bacon wrapped hotdogs cause they would come in and get them for breakfast or lunch.

    Hi, here in Norway we use these MRE packs a lot on mountain hikes and backcountry ski trips. buy them either directly from the manufacturer in Tromsø Norway (Drytec) in packs of 25, or at some sports shops.

      Yes! I'm in the Red Cross, and we use them whenever we're on any sort of search and rescue stuff. They're good enough to eat as a meal at home too, if you can't be bothered making any :D

    RR, great review. This is a ration that I think I could go for except the pate. I have to say the coffee was my favorite as I am a huge fan of Columbian coffee.
    Wishing you and Mrs. a great rest of your day and coming week. See you in 2 weeks.

    The most legendary military food in Norway is "Dead man in a can" and it doesn't expire after decades.

    • @norwegiangadgetman
      @norwegiangadgetman Месяц назад

      The classic RSP, dead man in a can, Rester av Sprengt Presonnell(Remains of Exploded Personnell) and probably a few other names... Way back in the 90s, I was on a large exercise, and one day the mess staff came around to our posts and handed out lunch material. Among that was a few tins of RSP from the 70s... One of the Grenadiers grabbed all but one tin which he allowed us to share. We sliced the contents and put it on bread, and yeah, it did taste better than the more recent tins I'd tried in the late 80s. After that I always had a few tins of 'Turistproviant'(Tourist Provisions, the civillian version) in a cupboard at home. One can was ALWAYS in my backpack when I went camping. I still have a few from the last year they made them(2016?) and I figure that in another decade they should be about perfect...

    Drytech also sells regular dinners like around 600 calories, I have bought 10-12 of these of various tastes for "emergency food" and I replace them every now and then.. they last like 5 years or more. Like when government advices us to have atleast 7 days of food in emergency I am ready hehe.

    Nice review but 1 thing I'm curious about is why do you have a kid on a liver pate? Doesn't matter if it's military or civilian use I haven't heard of kids eating liver pate or just liver lol I love all freeze dried rations but their getting harder to come by in Canada. You can get plain Mountain House in camping stores but they cost a pretty penny. Looking forward to the next reviews.

      In Norway that liver pate is a childhood food for many. We eat a lot of bread. Usually both breakfast and lunch will be bread with different toppings like cheeses, jam varieties, liver pate, cod caviar and cured meat slices like salami and bologna. So due to bringing a packed lunch to school the bread toppings that would withstand some hours in a backpack became staples for children with some of the most popular being liver pate, cheese(often a Norwegian brown sweet goat cheese) and the cured meat slices.

      The lyophilization process is pretty expensive because of the energy consumption and the long time required in specialized equipment. So yes, it's expensive and also this is luxury when you really need it, which adds to the price. As for liver pate, "every" Norwegian child grows up eating this. :) It's great with pickles on whole-grain bread!

    RSP tin cans from the 90s were the best! Heat it and put ketchup on it! Nothing beats that! I almost want to buy a box for 25 dollars to get that taste again, but last I ate it was in 2003 and I'm not sure it's safe to eat anymore! 😛

    • @FingalPersson
      @FingalPersson Месяц назад

      @@kvikende No, Snurring is not the same at all, big taste difference! Turist Proviant is neither the same, but snurring and turistproviant are the two closest yes, but it doesn't replace RSP at all 🙂 RSP with Ketchup is it's own thing!
      It's like telling someone if Mcdonalds disappeared over night that burger king is the same thing lol :)

    • @norwegiangadgetman
      @norwegiangadgetman Месяц назад

      I tried one from the 70s in the early 90s, and it was GOOD. They stopped making them in the 90s, but continued production of the civillian brand 'Turistproviant'(Tourist Provisions) until 2016. I have a few of those still, and figure that they should be properly matured in about a decade more.

    • @FingalPersson
      @FingalPersson Месяц назад

      @@norwegiangadgetman I know, and I'm so sad they stopped making them because I genuinely LOVED them! Honestly Turistproviant is the closest to it but it's far from the same in my opinion!

    Norwegian AFRs are some of my favorite rations, I do not like the moisture in the drink mixes, every one I have had is like this. doesn't alter the integrity of the finished drink but the moisture is not fun to deal with

    • @jeschinstad
      @jeschinstad 2 месяца назад

      It is not possible to fully dehydrate sugary substances by means of lyophilization, but sugar is the best preservative and moisture is not a problem at all. This was an unfortunate manufacturing error, but normally you'd just fill it with water and shake it to mix it.
