  • After some very trying days at the start and battling storm Tetha, Alex Thomson leads the race, with Jean Le Cam hot on his heals. The 61 your old veteran French man has show to be a force to reckon with, while Alex also has proven absolute mastery at the sails, showing restraint and precision while also performing a daring in taking an absolutely raiser close course to the core of storm Tetha in order to keep the shortest route and be in the best position to build up a real lead now.
    The conditions in the #VendeeGlobe2020 seem to be certainly in the favor of both of the leaders. With a steady wind prediction for the next 3 days of 15 to 30 knots in wonderfull reaching angles. The race course is opening up before them. But we all know the Vendee may seem to be lifting its skirt, there a most surely surprises waiting for us.
    What will happen now? Get your favorite drink ready and join the Sea Wolves for the daily analysis of the race to come!

    I’m often a little frustrated about the VG reporting. Just found this channel, kudos! To make it perfect, maybe cut in more of the sailorˋs footage, so we we don’t have to hunt for it 😇
    But this is already a great access to one of the coolest sailing races, so thanx for that, big tine! I’m looking forward to the roaring 40s and such, this will definitively make this winter a little easier to bear...

    On the 60's keel canting method: the hydraulic piston canting the keel is one of the four official parts that are identical: mast, booms, fin keel, hydraulic system typically powered by the diesel engine. Only the oldest boats are grandfathered to use their older canting systems like the multiple block purchase and electric winch on Medallia. Canting would be the most power-hungry activity on the boat, and must require a lot of current on the non-motorized boats with eco-power programs. I am certain there is a manual over-ride, because this is used during the stability test to 180 degrees to right the boat from within the cabin. Note that If the power system failed, the skipper would have to lock the keel on the centerline for the rest of the race. (Personally, I consider this powered canting to be a debatable question that is never discussed. But if you can use your engine to cant the keel, then why not to turn the winches also?)

    Hoi Florian. At some point can you talk through sail plans and strategy. We know they have a limit of 8 sails. Do you know who has chosen what? The selection would be Sp, G, CZ, J1, J2, J3, maybe storm, plus the Main. Not taking a Storm allows one extra. Do they take an extra Main, or maybe a light and a heavy SP. Or a spare J incase of a tear/loss??

    • @vendeeglobe8470
      @vendeeglobe8470 3 года назад +1

      Obligated storm jib (14-20 m2), mainsail, j1, j2, j3 (j2 obligated to be permanently fixed to forestay) code 0 and Gennaker. That's 7, one left. Some seem to have opted for a fractional code 0 or J0 plus a mast head code 0. Others seem to prefer both a light and a heavy weather Gennaker

    Do the IMOCA 60s sail downwind in heavy weather with a foresail only? This generally prevents broaching in my experience, but on a much slower yacht.

    I am writing from Astoria, Oregon about an interesting (to me) technical point on the IMOCA 60 rules. When talking about gybing, tacking etc all the commentaries omit any mention of the machinery that actually moves the 2-3 ton keel--except on Medallia, which is ironically the exception to the hydraulic set up! I would call her system the "super Mini 6.5" with a multi-part tackle and an electric winch to do the hard work. I assume that all the other 60's are using battery-powered hydraulic rams--although they are not allowed to use electric sheet and halyard winches, which are banned in the standard racing rules, or raise the boat's handicap. So my question is: what kind of "stored power" is allowed in the VG and other big races, how is it generated, and can it also be used to actually help propel the boat, by tightening the standing rigging etc. Also how does the emergency manual keel cant method work during the capsize test? Peter Marsh

    A couple of questions:
    1. For your weather routing are you just using the standard Imoca60 polars within PredictWind?
    2. For your current weather routing (looking a few days ahead), what do you use as the destination waypoint to calculate the routing?
