  • Never a dull moment in the Vendee Globe 2020 around the word race. Today we got the sad news that Corum, Nicolas Troussel has dismasted of the coast of the islands, at this moment it is unsure exactly what the state of his ship is. The one thing we do know is that Nicolas is not injured himself.
    Meanwhile Alex Thomson and Jean are still in the lead, although the rest of the foiling fleet is fast catching up to the legendary Frenchman. Alex Thomson however seems to strengthening his lead with every moment, sailing in good breeze and with at least a day or perhaps two of somilar conditions ahead, The Brit is in a very fortunate position, but the doldrums are ahead!!
    Since many of you asked, In this episode I will take some time to explain about the basics of types of sails and where the attach to the boats.

    Thank you so much for your explanations. This sport is followed by a lot of non-sailors like me! I’ve sailed dinghies and watched cruisers so know basic principles but have never learned detail about sails and configurations. Deeper understanding means I can engage much more and actually get what the competitors are talking about! so thank you!

    Thank you for that clear explanation. It is hard to give a basic introduction to a complex topic without sounding patronising. You did a great job of striking the right balance between simple to understand but enough detail to make it valuable.

    Hiya - good explanation, but you didn’t cover the ‘Code 0’ etc nomenclature 😉 the other thing would be to talk about the conditions that favour one sail over another, beyond the obvious ‘stronger winds, smaller sails’ - wind angle, slot effects, etc 💐

      If you play the winds forward a couple of days you will see he will have a nice north easterly. When I saw that I thought he has to go for it.

    You are a little wrong. A stands for Assymetric (A1, A2 and so on). J stands for jib(from j1 to j3), and there are same code sails (on vo65 they have a bigger one the code0 and the fractional zero wich is attached above the forestay, on imocas i think they only have the fractional zero). The code sails are different to the A sails because they have a cable in them, but A sails dont.
    Apart from that very interesting content, keep it up :)

    As a second part to the sail plan explanation it would be useful to novices to explain the rationale for sail changes besides the wind speed, that is, keeping the boat "balanced" i.e. keeping the full main with only a small jib may give the boat a "weather helm" and hence more drag from the rudder trying to keep the boat on course...or reefed main and too large a headsail doing the opposite.....Great Channel !!

    Thanks for the explanation -- I learn something every video. Can you explain next about emergency procedures, both onboard and responders. I often see in videos skippers walking all over without harness and not hooked into a lifeline, even in rough weather. Isn't that taking unnecessary risk with the only part of the boat that does not have a spare; the skipper?!

    The way of sail naming I am used to:
    Code 0: Light wind Jib (wind degree 90-120)
    Jibtop: Free flying sail for (wind degree 80-130)
    A1 A3 A5: Free flying sail (wind degree 130-155)
    A2 A4 A6: Free flying sail (wind degree 145-170)
    G1-G5: Genuas that are connected to the forestay (30-90)
    Stay sail: Free flying sail that is inside of the forestay (additional support for other sails)
    General rule: the larger the number the stronger the sail. The more suited it is for stronger winds.

      jibtop is not free flying. They are flown on the stay but the sheeting point is much higher compared to the genua. Normally spi-sheets are used to fly jibtops.

    I really enjoy the channel and I am everyday viewer since the start of the Vendee but I might have a slightly different perspective on the sails - would say A’s are assymetric spinakkers - free flying downwind sails primarily, numbers stand for not only the size but the depth, so the uneven numbers stand for sails with less depth and even numbers for sails with more depth, so A1 is the largest flatter sail and the A2 the largest sail with deepest mid girth, and the logic goes on with the higher numbers for smaller sails. Regarding the angles the even A’s would be more of a runners and uneven ones more of a reachers. As for the jibs there is also a top mast top bowsprit option for the jib making it a free flying jib (not attachet to the forestay) and some call it the J0 great for upwind sailing in light airs.

    This was fantastic! Seeing the more basic stuff really helps us newbies to understand what is going on! Another video explaining terms like 'reaching' and 'beating' and 'sailing close' would be great. I think it has something to do with the wind? So more about the wind mechanics would be great as well.

    Thanks for the sail explanation. I was taught to think of the different sails as a "gear shifter" in your car. Can you explain Apparent wind and how these boats are a lot different than your old displacement type boats in relation to sail choices, choice of course/wind angle, etc... th

    Thanks for the update and the technical explanation on the sail plans. A few simple questions - could you also cover the range of Spinnakers carried - indeed they look to be using Code 0 or asymmetrical spinnakers exclusively - perhaps to make sail handling easier? Could you also explain how they go about tacking with multiple cutter rigs when running a large Genoa? Do they furl the Genoa - or do they run the clew of the Genoa around the cutter stay? I look forward to my morning update evry day down here in Sydney- thanks!

    What an excellent explanation, really kudos on this one. Luckily us mere mortals don't need 8 different headsails:
    these things are heavy (like 95kg/>200 lbs), even when they're dry! And if you have a "competitive personality", you're going to be dragging all those bags up to windward (inside or maybe even on deck) every time you tack or gibe, even with the water balast and the swing keel - I think?? Hey, at least you don't need to pay for a gym membership :) And I love the news about Charal: good for you Monsieur Beyou!

    For a non-sailor these vids are fascinating. How do the sailers manage with no proper sleep for 70 days or so? Do they carry fresh water, or make it from sea-water? What happens if they have a bad accident, can they call up a rescue ship?

    Great Chanel. Thanks so much for entertainment with lots of nautical education.
    I’m just catching up with the fleet as I missed the start. But my speed is two or three videos a day. So I should be waked by the foilers soon.
    One question though: on the boats I sail I would name the sail you described to be a Spinnaker more as a Gennaker as they are attached to the front of the boat whereby my Spinnakers are flying freely and only guided by a separate beam attached to the front edge of the mast. Of course both sails are attached to the top of the mast and are controlled via line-attaching points at the back end of the boat. Thanks if you find the time to comment on this.

    As all (most?) of the boats have the same mast as Nicolas Troussel (CORUM L’Épargne) what are the implications for the rest of the fleet? Is there any detail on the cause of failure?

      no not yet, but most likely it is not some type of failure in the mast itself, but something that else like: A freak wave, or a Chinese gibe, or something else that happened.

    I think in the Vendee Globe they are limited to 8 sails, one of which is a mandatory storm jib, so if you discount the mainsail they have only 6 front sails to play with.

    Thanks for your contents, I'm studying Yacht Design at University and your videos helped me out on having a better understanding on what's its going on. Can you tell me the difference between an Asymmetric sail like a Genoa and a Code 0? Why it's called Asymmetrical?

    How much speed loss (drag) are the tow turbines generating? Are all contestants pulling them or is anyone running alternatives? Back of an envelope calc. 1kW generator = 1.34hp assuming a 50% efficient turbine = 2.7hp of drag. Hugo Boss solar is performing well (for a shadey sailboat) but I expect his loads exceed his solar generation ability.

      Certainly an episode on power, generation, what uses much more power than you might expect and so on would be great! One of the skippers mention changing her hydrogen blades though I guess that is for water??

      Usually a race-hydrogenerator zapps between .5 and 1.5 kts of boatspeed. We switched to solar to on our race yachts, so if it is not too cloudy at least during the day we can eek out some more speed by pulling the hydros out of the water. I think it was Sam that did have to change the hydro prop, since her generator hit something and a blade broke, thus creating an oscillation that would have wrecked it if not adressed.

      Wow. So a 7.5ton vessel being slowed 0.8ms = 6kW or 8hp drag if my mathulations are correct (er...)
      Next question what's the average hydrogen output?
      Actually, the Hugo Boss has an OceanVolt I recall, these are reversible motors (regen enabled)...I doubt he's got the prop/impeller fixed in the water, the boat's too clever for that.

      @@scruff7559 Output really depends on model and size... can range from a few 100 watts to a few dozen kwatts. Imocas have a fixed propeller/impeller! But on the other hand the prop is super smart in its design and built for lowest drag/highest efficiency and not speed or instantaneus accelleration.

      Is the drag proportional to the model size? I'm guessing larger is more efficient as the impeller is doing the work and the supporting structure is an unavoidable loss. Higher output would mean a greater swept area with a lower surface area.
      That's interesting they all have a fixed prop, that implies the Hugo Boss is using regen off it's prop/impeller whereas the rest towing outboard turbines are experiencing non-beneficial drag from their props and parasitic losses from the outboard.
      I'd love to see an in-depth comparison of these devices. I see myself designing an electric sailboat in the distant future.

    Linkedout and Apivia are not only catching up with Jean, they are slowly closing the gap to Alex as well. At 8.30 this morning there was a gap of 126nm between Linkedout and Hugo Boss, now it is down to 107nm. The weather seems quite the same for both, but still Linkedout is faster... Any ideas/comments why ?

      The guys in 2,3,4th place are pushing to the max to catch up. Alex is only trying to go fast, and not break his boat. I think he is happy to be up front, but he is still on the same stratagy. He want to finish in one piece.

    Thank you for the basics 😃 Is there any chance we could get a follow up on the differences in when the different sails, or a combination would be used? Is a Genoa also used for beating into the wind or only for reaching? When does one consider a combination of several foresails. And is there such a thing as a classic gennaker on an imoca, that is not attached to a stay, but can overlap to the windward side?

    I have a question to the numbers at the tracker. How often do you see wrong numbers eg wave hights about 130m and temperaturs among 1000 degree? Is that a fault from my aquipement or do you and other readers have seen same nonsense ?

    If a Jib is a J sail why is a Genoa not a G sail? I thought an A sail was an Asymmetric spinnaker ie it was not attached to a forestay. And then there is the famous Code Zero designed specifically for this route. We need more on this subject (which I thought I understood but obviously don't!

      :) yes, so this is quite typically the case of theory VS practice. In theory all sails can be properly qualified and categorized, but because of many MANY modern inventions and sail shapes becoming ever more advanced and versatile, in practice you will very often hear people refer to a sail as: (for example) a kite, when it is really not a kite, or they might call something a spinnaker, when it is really a Gennaker, Or call something a jibb, when it is actually a stay sail. etc. That is why, for my mind, I find the explenation I gave in the video actually creates the least confusion in the long run :)

    Do we know what sails each boat is carrying? I was a little surprised by how little sail area Alex had up when he set off, Could that be because he's decided against carrying an A1? You can see on the speed plot how much slower he was going at the start of the race and how many places he lost... If he did have the sails was it a poor decision?

    Could you do a video on the ropework and the constant adjustments they make? It seems like they are pulling on or letting out different ropes all the time and I have no clue what it does

    So LinkedOut & Apivia seams to be 1-2 kt faster than Hugo boss. Should Alex be worried long term. What do you think.

      not really, they are just pushing harder. Keeping the boat in one piece is more important then being in first place at this time in the race :)

    Wow - I loved the Shofar horn blowing introduction! I was watching a CAM video all in French. I did not understand a word. The language sounds so unique. Like the villain in the Matrix said "It is like wiping your ass with silk". Can some one tell me what he was talking about "klak - klak - klak"? This is is the only work I remotely caught, but what was it about?

      Which video? Lol. The "clac clac clac" is him trying to get the voice-activated camera to turn around. Jean is not really big on new tech - imagine your grampa trying to figure out the remote control. Lol. It's become a running joke with his supporters. His catchphrase, if you will. As for the language, well, it's French. Jean has a thick accent of the region where he is from, plus lots of slang expressions, added to the normal sailor jargon which is like a language unto itself anyway (in English as well). If I know which video I can try to at least summarize for you.

      100% s from the tip of the bow, to the mastbase, any % over 100 means the sail is longer and goes beyond the mast base

      Foils quoted at 500,000 Euro a pair. + allow at least the same again (and probably more) for installation. Sam Davies said they had to strengthen the hull to take the loads.

    You explain exactly what I need to know. Please, would you cover things like their sleep on board ? or what are the regulations for the sails they embark ? I mean it seems they don"t all have the same batch of sails, how come ?

    Can you comment on what the IMOCA boats have in terms of warning systems of other ships/boats to let the skippers know of a potential collision, especially when sailing at night, etc.

      The boats have a AIS receiver and Sender. Other boats are supposed to give way since a Sailing Ship is not as maneuverable. If the AIS receiver perceives a potential collision it will give a warning. Some teams have experimented with radar, lidar etc. The problem is with false positives.
