For the creepy BIL one I would say OP needs to show the sister the book. Like yes the sister will react negatively (and might direct her anger at OP rather than at BIL). Still OP cannot hide such a big warning sign of a ticking time bomb as that, sister needs to know what sort of threat her husband is whether she believes it or not.

Okay I'd have a hard time not bending the thousand page paperback monster, I was a very "this book has to stay pristine" person until I read a 600 page paperback and in trying to not bend the spine I held it gently the whole way and my hand cramped so badly (I read it very slowly because it was in my second language and I'm a pretty slow reader in general) but when I was around 500 pages I realized the back cover had started to fray instead of staying glossy. Maybe it was oils from my hand, sweat, or both but after that I went to the "well-worn just means well-loved" camp. I didn't like short books so it was either let the spine bend under it's own weight or damage the cover.

yes!!! As a kid I was very much in the "I don't care if it gets crumpled I just want to be comfy when reading" camp, but I started to care more about the aesthetics on my shelf as teen. Now... if it's not a special edition the spine is getting cracked for comfort 😂

This was a lot of fun, I love AITA stories and you definitely found some good ones to react to! Agreed with all your judgments 😆

Miss Lily...this was awesome! I love your bookish content and this was another gem added to list. 😊 And as for "Mr. I demand to know her pen name" I would be shocked if he didn't end up a villain in one of her stories 😂

Thank you!! And yes she 100% needs to name a villain after him!

I like to keep my paperbacks nice, but I don't get mad if there are a few cracks. I got away with reading Priory with only one crack in the spine, and it's not the most obvious. Before I read paperbacks I use a method I found the stretch out/bend the spine binding to prevent later cracking. I did it on Priory before I read it, which saved me a lot of pain since I really do love the spine of that book!

That's impressive! I've tried those techniques to stretch out the binding before you read but it never seems to work for me

I agree with you on everything except 1 - I don’t see how that is any different from someone secretly taking cash from your house and claiming to get the notes checked for validity against you will and refusing to hand the money back when confronted about it? It’s theft either way and you’d be 100% within your right to involve police, ESPECIALLY after confronting them and even threatening to inform his workplace- this didn’t do anything so what other options are there? You shouldn’t have to move mountains or beg or rally people up against someone who stole from you. You’re not wrong for fighting for your property. If anything it’s worse than stealing money because signed books could hold personal value to the owner on top of material value. I’d probably be so mad, I’d write to all bookshops in the area and warn them should that thief apply. If he doesn’t see that what he did is morally wrong and illegal, he has to learn the hard way

Okay, I have so many thoughts on these.
AITA 1: I understand filing the police report, especially since she gave him a chance to return the books, I wouldn't have threatened to show up w cops until I'd spoken w his work. Like, she might have felt she needed the report as proof but the rest felt like overkill.
AITA 2: that dog ears pages commentor is weird to me. Like, will she not lend you books bc you refuse not to dog ear pages? Or is does she just not trust you not to? It's really easy to adhere to such a simple request so one of y'all is fishy here.
AITA 3: I get why the friend is upset, but if the other friend only knows their Ao3 profile or whatever, then I think they're overreacting. Now, I WOULDN’T have admitted that I know them. I just would have said, "Hey, here's some cool ff." If the friend didn't want ANYONE to read it then they should have posted it on the internet. Sharing fanfic is kinda how fanfic works...
AITA 4 Sister is gonna think they're the asshole, but this is gonna be an issue later and she needs to bring it up with her. Even share the novel if she needs proof. This is one case where sharing someone's writing w/o their permission would be okay.

AITA 6: OOOOOOH MAN, I remember this one. I agree. I think there are some serious trust issues there if this ends up being a long term relationship and she doesn't tell you. But six months????? Bro...

honestly, it depends on how famous the others are. because personally, i've got a precious few books that i'd call the cops over. A signed copy of the handmaid's tale, my first edition of 1984.
i mean, i wouldn't call the cops over most books, but like, there are some signed copies of things i can understand going berserk over.
and also, like, you come to my house and steal my shit, i call you out, and you make up some crap and REFUSE to return my stuff?
honestly, i don't really care whether it's only a $5 bill you stole. That's not okay. my home is my freaking sanctuary, and for someone to come in and steal things when you trusted them in your home is not ok, no matter how small the stolen items are.
so overkill or not, i still feel like she's got a right to call the cops. and it's not like she didn't warn him. she straight up told him, this is what i'm gonna do if you don't give them back.
dude could've very easily just been like, my bad, sorry, and given the books back. but he didn't. so you know, whatever happens after that is kind of on him.

@@bottomofastairwell i mean, I said that. She had to call them to file a police report and she definitely should have. But considering how broadly US cops abuse their power, they're gonna be my last resort. And sometimes not even then.

@@TheWordN3rd yeah, that's fair. the cops are pretty shitty. and honestly, i'm kind of surprised they turned up and did anything over books. I've had cops do less to help over freaking assault.
