Helen Hoang is a Vietnamese-American author and has discovered that she and her daughter have Asperger's syndrome (aka on the autism spectrum). She is proof that you can be autistic and can lead a normal life (have a job, get married, have a kid, become a parent). One needs to have an average intelligence to lead a normal life independently. If a person had been autistic and intellectually disabled, then that is a bigger problem.
Oh my god, that guy saying that his girlfriend's PhD is worth nothing because she writes fanfiction belongs in the fucking bin. I think he feels inferior to her, and is trying to find any excuse to put her down because he just can't handle it. Also, he clearly doesn't realise that there are quite a few overlapping skills between the two - the ability to commit and stay focussed, dedication and the ability to construct a narrative/argument. He's SUCH an asshole and I hope she tells everyone about this, because he will never find another girlfriend during his natural lifetime.
you are so cute and sweet i would love to have a friend like you and i liked your thoughts on the book like you considered every scene with consideration i tend to be like that and not jump to negative conclusions so ya love u
This is nonfiction, but I'm currently reading Temple Grandin's "Thinking In Pictures". As far as fiction goes, the only book I've read with a character identified as autistic is Peter May's "The Man With No Face". While that character is not a main one as such, they are significant. Of course that depends if you like crime fiction.
16:03 Tolkien was not an atheist. He was Catholic, and his religion had a lot of influence on his writing. I am not particularly knowledgeable of the influences, but he himself said that LOTR is "fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision" in his letters.
Yes someone else commented this, my mistake! I was taught at school that he was atheist and never questioned it but now I know I am incorrect :)
Thank you so much for posting this video! I just found out I’m autistic a few months ago & I love getting these recommendations…I just ordered A Kind of Spark 😊 I’m new to your channel so not sure if you read much adult fantasy, but I highly recommend the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire - amazing neurodivergent & queer representation by an author who is autistic and OCD herself. I also recommend the Murderbot series, apparently Martha Wells only learned she’s autistic when a bunch of autistic readers said they felt represented by Murderbot & that’s how she put it together for herself, which I think is really cool! Neil Gaiman is also autistic & although I’m not sure if he has any characters who are explicitly coded neurodivergent, it still makes me feel great reading his stuff knowing that 😊
🍷
so I guess it is unpopular that I like French flap... it is supposed to be used as a bookmark
actually it's not! French flaps are designed to make a book like more premium and also give the publisher more space for reviews/blurbs/info about the book. A lot of books with french flaps are too big to use them as bookmarks 😊
I discovered your channel through this video. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
thank you so much!
I really enjoyed the video but I have to make a HUGE correction on something you said: J.R.R. Tolkien was not "a major atheist". He was actually a lifelong devout Catholic, and Lord of the Rings has many biblical elements throughout the story. Maybe you were thinking of another author. Hope this helps 😃. Have a great day!
ah interesting, I wonder why I was taught he was an atheist at school 😂
@@LiteraryLily Oh wow 🤣 You know what... I bet you're thinking of author C.S. Lewis (Tolkien's bestfriend). C.S. Lewis was an atheist, and became a Christian (hence his latter works). People often talk about/ teach them together because of the contrast.. I bet that's who you were thinking of 😃
@@XfileSeeker22 nope! I was definitely taught that CS Lewis was Christian and Tolkien was atheist and that Tolkien hated how much CS lewis based Narnia on the bible! It was when we were learning about books inspired by or based on other works… who knows where that teacher got that from 😂
@@LiteraryLily Interesting, the teacher somehow got it mixed up... it's actually switched. I don't know if you ever read Lord of the Rings (it's my all-time favorite novel), or if you ever saw the movies, but you can see the Biblical elements and similes in the story 😃
🍷

Tiktok is a double edge sword. It made reading more popular and accessible. However, the books that are popular on booktok are usually smut romance-fantasy. People are reading more but nit reading not thought-provoking books. I hate French-flaps!
9:49 I haven’t read all of Austen’s books but how can Pride and Prejudice be your least favorite when Sense and Sensibility is right there
so many people said sense and sensibility was their favourite to me!
5:54 I feel like pop culture references are more tolerable the more recognizable the reference is. If you reference The Godfather or Harry Potter (god forbid), most people are going to get it because they’ve just been solidified in the cultural zeitgeist. Also, in books set in the modern world, it feels weird to me if there AREN’T any recognizable pop culture staples. Like what would the world even be like if Star Wars didn’t come out to completely change the landscape of movie merchandise?
totally agree about book boxes (i’m thinking about going to book only but there’s occasionally something i really want and it sucks me in 😭) and also romantasy- you are so right!!!
Yeah I did the maths and realised if I went book only and then bought the items I wanted secondhand I would save so much money 😅
In my opinion, TikTok has done damage to the book community more than helped it. It’s a lot more popular to read now but I think that also diluted a lot as well in regard to the quality of writing, printing, etc. it’s sad to see. I got into the book sphere in 2018 and I just don’t like where it’s brought us personally (I also just dislike tik tok as a whole so maybe I’m just bias 😂)
I think I agree. Making reading more popular has been wonderful and definitely given more opportunities for authors, but tiktok definitely encourages such a fast pace of production that authors are being pressured to release books quicker and quality is dipping as a result. 10 years ago waiting 1-3 years between books from an author was normal and now people can't cope with that 😭
I love your bookshelf, Lily. 🕯
thank you!
You hit the nail on the head with so many of these, especially the Book Box and TikTok conversations! Also your audio on this is so soothing 💛
thank you so much!
I like french flaps on poetry collections as it means I don't need a book mark. It also allows more space for review excerpts from critics which can help give more insight into the poems. I can see why they'd be annoying on fiction books. Enjoyed these topics! I've never bought book boxes or whatever those are. Buying a beautiful edition of a book or a hardback is a good enough treat for me.
that's really interesting about the french flaps in poetry books! I don't read poetry so never come across that before
I don't know why but 'this universe is beautiful and I could have spent forever in it' really hit me right in the reader heart.
❤️
Andrew Joseph White. Trans and autistic. Amazing books; The Spirit Bares it’s teeth and Hell Followed with Us. Another book coming out this year called compound fracture.
☀️
I too need to read Bunny this year or I think I never will. Ohh I've read the first Diviners book but it was ages ago and on audio and I just didn't take it in so I'm going to reread! AHH SEVEN DEVILS. YES. I also need to get to this already haha. I've read Truly Devious but I do need to read the fourth book already
ooh good luck getting to these as well!
Perfectly
Sahih Muslim book, I recommend it
I have a point system too! Well I call it a button system, for every 4 books I read or challange i can check off i get a button. For each button i can buy a book, but i am not allowed to buy more than 2 books at a time and need to finish those before buying news books even if i do have some buttons saved up. Seeing the buttons in the jars really motivates me but also keeps me ontrack with reading the books i bought
sounds cool!
I DNFd southern book club. 🥱
very fair!
Hopefully 2024 has less disappointing books 🤞🍊🍊
we can hope!
I totally agree on Spin the dawn. Loved the first half, totally bored during the second half.
glad it's not just me!
As someone who studied translation and works as a translator, Babel was a bit disappointing, the whole magic system felt more like etymology rather than translation and translation studies as an academic field only exists since like the 1950s but I did ignore that for the plot’s sake. The first and the second half felt completely different and the author kept repeating ideas about imperialism, almost as if she didn’t trust that the reader would get it, it got too repetitive (and their ideas regarding colonisation felt more like modern ideas rather than from that time period). Really good idea, okay executed and sometimes it felt like the magic system was being forced a bit bc it wasn’t working like the author meant to
I found the etymology was really interesting but I agree with her that the characters had no personality . I agree with you the magic system was odd and 'unbelievable'. I don't really mind the time inaccuracies (as I wouldn't know what was correct and what wasn't )
@@becciwhite8350 yeah I’m an etymology nerd so it was fun, specially because it was from languages I didn’t know, but it wasn’t translation really because translation isn’t about finding the matching term, sometimes there isn’t, it’s about meaning an context. But again I know that for the larger audience this isn’t really important. I also felt like the characters were a bit like stereotypes and plain, to be honest
thank you for your insight this was really interesting! I think having more historical context makes the book even worse for me! Like you said, good idea but not the best execution
I wasn't keen on Small Pleasures either
glad it's not just me!
I just finished Wayfarers this week and loved it! Will definitely be picking up more Becky Chambers :)
yessss! I can't wait to read more Becky Chambers!
I'm actually such a sucker for the Bridgerton books it's ridiculous, am I gonna have to reread them
I loved some of them! I can totally see them being comfort reads!
I literally used the audiobook of EIMFHKS to fall asleep on a plane ride. I also didnt enjoy TIHYLTTW

Finally catching up on my comments! It sounds so much lovelier this year! Sorta regret not going now especially as I LOVE Patrick Ness!!
It really was! So much more book focused this year (less cliquey!) and better organised
This sounds like an amazing top 20. I don't know how you managed to narrow it down!

It's time for a book buying ban for me too, fingers crossed for the both of us!!

Looks like you had a great reading year! I'm glad you enjoyed Legends and Lattes, I really liked that when I read it. I just recently read both books in the Monk & Robot series and loved them, so I'm keen to get to the Wayfarer's series now.

ooh yay that's awesome!
Almost all of these is on my TBR, (though I haven't read "Throne of Glass" or "Twilight"). Kingdom of the Wicked, The Bromance Book Club, Skyward, The Curse Breakers and the Lunar Chronicles are some of the series I want to start. Same with Truly Devious. Seven Devils sounds interesting.
oh wow what an overlap!
@@LiteraryLily it's scary, but I'm glad to know that there are others who have yet read some of these books!
A psalm for the wild built (and it's sequel) is fantastic! I made a 24 in 24 list as well, it's so fun ❤
