I would be beyond furious if a loved one knew about my fanfiction and used it to put me down. I've been in the fanfiction community for over a decade now & had so many great experiences and writing challenges. That said, I also managed to publish my first original novel this year too, so more power to the last story's girlfriend!! 💪🏻

I'm the same! I'm not a big FF writer now but I was a few years ago and I would have been mortified if it was used against me! And congrats on publishing your novel :)

🍷 and in response to the first one, how is he going to be upset with her for liking this other man's books when he hasn't been honest about it? Like i think he just needs to sit her down and open up.

I always read the first few pages, a few pages in the middle and the end of a book before deciding if I’m going to read the entire book. I want to know how it ends before I invest my time and emotions in the characters. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a happy ending, but it has to be one that isn’t contrived, that make sense and fits the tone of the book.

What's especially bothersome about the dry book club story is that, as far as I understood what happened, Melissa had no problem with the rule before she knew the reason. Following a rule is fine, but not if it's to be nice and supportive? What? 🍷

Oh my god, that guy saying that his girlfriend's PhD is worth nothing because she writes fanfiction belongs in the fucking bin. I think he feels inferior to her, and is trying to find any excuse to put her down because he just can't handle it. Also, he clearly doesn't realise that there are quite a few overlapping skills between the two - the ability to commit and stay focussed, dedication and the ability to construct a narrative/argument. He's SUCH an asshole and I hope she tells everyone about this, because he will never find another girlfriend during his natural lifetime.
