It's wonderful to see these locations on RUclips. Thank you so much these videos have inspired me to get back out there with my camera. Thank you so much.
Great images ! It just comes to show you things don't always go according to plan you have to adapt with what mother nature give you and you still can find great images.
Thanks for this video, Kim, I enjoy seeing Dunnottar Castle and the sea around it. The color of the water was just beautiful. I've been to Aberdeenshire, but not as far south as that. Regarding your discussion, I totally agree with you that when you go to a location one should always be prepared to shoot subjects other than planned. It so often seems to work that way! We must be prepared to shoot the best we can see. I looked at your website and saw all the fantastic workshops you are offering-wonderful! How I'd love to join you for one. I'll be in Scotland (Edinburgh and St Andrews) this October, but without a car, which might make it difficult. I'm so glad to see you are getting involved with teaching. Teaching has always been one of the joys of my life. I taught studio art at a university in the U.S. for thirty years, and still miss it. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers, Bob.
Glad you enjoyed it Bob! I'm excited to get starting with my workshops. Teaching sure is a great way to connect with others and spread a positive message. I'm hoping to do some more workshops in the autumn months. A shame that you won't have access to a car to join us :( Hopefully one day!!
What you said about that Rock Reminds me of when Mr.Heaton(also a much watched channel of mine) went to Canada and amidst all the snow covered pines and majestic peaks, he shot a small pool with leaves frozen in it. you shoot what's there at a given time :)
I am a new photographer and a new viewer of your videos. Your enthusiasm is wonderful, and you are a great photographer, too :-) Keep up the great work !
Very nice video and very nice thought about using the condition available to the best of ability and not be stuck on pre decided shot... In short adapt to conditions very nice Kim..... Happy new year have great and adventurous year ahead...
great work Kim , can remember visiting that castle when we where up in Scotland on Holiday , brought back some great memories , great images , take care
My Sunday tonic (no gin involved!). Loved the sea colours and the whirling surf around the rock. It's good to focus on a detail of the landscape, in addition to more panoramic views. Nice PICTures!
Fantastic colour in that sea Kim you've been so lucky there. Really nice to see you thinking outside the box instead of being disappointed that the image you intended wouldn't work for you. You didn't just pack up and go home but looked at different angles and focused on water and colours resulting in some cracking images. Cant wait to see what you come up with inside the castle. Take care and keep off the edge of those cliffs hahaha!!!
Thank you very much John. I guess this video shows how much my photography has changed over the past year or so. The video I filmed inside the castle was an explore Scotland video so sadly (for you) there won't be any photos in it. HOWEVER, some of the phone photos I did take can be seen on my instagram page. Thanks again :)
Great vlog as per usual...I really liked the selfie image, I was up there some years ago now and would love to go back, but this time with my camera.....Martin
WOW Kim what a location. Light may not have been perfect, but perfect light does not happen every time you are out. I love your tip of looking for a composition even if it is not the specific thing you came to photograph. I have found many times my best image is one that was not planned or expected. Looking forward to next video of the Dunnottar Castle in Aberdeenshire!
Great captures. I remember when you started. Your Vblog was wonderful. Now thru time. Your wisdom shows. But I would think that weekends would be crowded.
Yes, although you'd be surprised by how quiet many places are in the winter months. Many people don't like going out in the cold. I guess that's why it surprised me. Thanks Don :)
I think that might be me at the top of the steps looking down to the castle! While sunrise wasn’t great at least some colour came through shortly after, even if briefly. I went down to the beach on the other side from where you were, was hoping to get some long exposures with the rocks on that side myself. Great vlog 👍
Thank you Damon! Nice to hear that you were one of the many photographers out enjoying the view that morning. I hope you managed to get some images you were happy with too :)
Kim Grant Cheers Kim, yep got one I was happy with at Dunnottar but probably had more luck up at Aberdeen Harbour later in the morning. It was a long way to travel but worth it 👍👍
Well done Kim , love seeing the northeast coast of Scotland as when i'am in Scotland i tend to head to west coast or north coast, probably because i live on northeast coast of England, love Northumberland & the borders you should have your self a trip down this way sometime . keep up the good vlogging , waiting to get back to work before i try a workshop with you . :)
Thanks Kevin. Most people end up in the west or north when up in Scotland. It's not hard to see why (they are stunning!). The east coast has got its fair share of stunning locations too though. Hopefully your next visit may bring you here. Also, would love to make it down to England to do some shoots sometime. Some amazing places to be seen and explored :)
Some nice shots there Kim despite the grey skies. I was there in the evening a couple of days before you and the car park was almost full but most left just before sunset?
It is such a busy place! I was surprised by how many people were in the castle that day too (given it's the middle of winter and freezing). Can't imagine how busy it must be in the summer months! Great location though and lovely that so many get out to enjoy it.
Hi Kim, great breakdown of Dunnottar Castle and the surrounding natural beauty, does make sense to have other plans should things not go according to plan, also can I ask what was that block at the back of your camera is that to kind of shut out any ambient light from the viewfinder, if so does it attach to the camera somehow, it intrigued me
When shooting long exposure, if it;'s not too windy I use the filter case to block out the light from the viewfinder (as seen in this video). Unfortunately I threw out the viewfinder cover that came with the camera when I bought it and haven't got round to replacing it. I therefore find/use whatever is available to me when I'm out in the field.
Kim, What an epic location, the hue of the water is quite captivating! Using you bag to weight the 'pod is good practice. I've also found that keeping a strap on the camera can also affect stability, as the strap can act a a "sail," catching the breeze and tugging at the whole apparatus. Nice tease on the next vlog, and don't ever shy from promoting your workshops. Your inspiration and verve will prove great assets as you proceed with that goal. Thank-You, Mike
Thanks for the advice Mike. I usually try to tie the strap around the tripod to prevent this. As I go between tripod and handheld images, I like to keep the strap on....The amount of times I would have dropped the camera without the strap doesn't bare thinking about! It's a shame the straps are so fiddly to get on and off, otherwise I would detach it when doing images like this. Never mind. Thanks also for your encouragement - much appreciated :)
Good morning, green is not my favourite colour after driving a green heavy goods vehical for 20 years but that was a long time ago and you have just changed that about green, the green sea looked fantastic, I liked your selfie and you got the best from that lonely island, oh and I almost forgot that spooky looking castle.....my wife said yesterday any plans for Sunday and I told her I am not doing anything until I have watched Kims video! Thanks for sharing and again it was most enjoyable.....
That's so lovely that you said that to your wife Des! Also really glad that you're continuing to enjoy the videos. I hope you'll enjoy my adventure one this Sunday from inside the castle too!
Nicely done, Kim. I was thinking there would be an all-access type of card that would cover all the Scottish and UK historical places like the castle. Looks like a great location when the light arrives. I noticed they are closed today due to high winds. Cheers and carry on!
It sure is a great location. You can get membership cards for certain places but often historical places are owned by different organisations. I received a Historic Scotland membership for Christmas, so I can get into all Historic Scotland places for free this year, but Dunnotter isn't owned by them so had to pay. Worth every penny though (as you'll see this Sunday ;)
Fantastic images Kim. The castle looks similar in many ways to Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland. Would love to have went on one of your photo trips but unfortunately does not coincide with my dates of visiting Scotland.
Great to hear that although you are up at 10k subs, you still find it daunting vlogging around people. I hoped it would be less daunting the bigger you get. I tried similar in Buchaletive recently with BvS to try and get something different than the usual! Enjoyable Sunday morning coffee vlog! may get booked on a workshop of yours!
It would be fantastic to see you come along to a workshop! I am a lot more confident vlogging now than I used to be but I still really struggle in public places (especially when I'm on my own). I don't think I'll lose that for a while yet.
Pretty sure it’s the case from her 10-stop filter. Since Kim uses a mirrored camera, there's a chance of light leaking in through the viewfinder on long exposures; hanging the filter case on the viewfinder prevents such leakage that could ruin an image.
I remember really liking the view from the other way round, towards the millitary monument if I remember correctly, it was over ten years ago. ☺️ 👵🏼 There was a path down to the beach there, if you went down it slightly the castle sort of got framed between cliff faces. Loved the colours you ended up with in the photos!
Thank you Natasja! I've been wanting to visit and shoot from the military monument for a long time now. Someday soon I hope to do so. Your comment has made me want to go more so now. Thanks again!
Don't tell anyone. This is just between you and me. I watched this video again. Really. The whole thing. Again. Yes, I'm either crazy... or, dare I say, what you had to say was worth the listen anew? I'm going to stick with me being at least a bit more than a bit bonkers.l But besides that, I smile in addition to all the other reasons to smile for watching and listening is I knowing you are setting up your video shots also. You work it out then place the camera (and so on and so forth... to get the video you need). Pretty 'mazing actually. Good for you! Good day to ya :)
Yknow how the L-bracket was life-changing, so is a "camera clip" -- it's a solid metal piece that attaches to your backpack strap (or belt) & it clips in your camera -- you can keep the camera out/on you, ready for snapping 😊! I got mine's from "peak design" & the bottom is arcaswiss compatible, so you can put it on your tripod quickly as well. I'd always be taking my camera in/out of my pack, depending on the situation, it was such a hassle & definitely made for slow moving whilst out hiking. Camera clip is another small tweak I've made that has had a huge impact overall.
Thank you for this piece of advice. I saw someone made a video about this a while back and I really would love to get one in the near future. I can see how life-changing a small thing like that can be when out and about. They sound amazing!
I hear you. Somehow, for some reason, everything changes in terms of vlogging and capturing photographic moments when you realise there are more people around you than your expected. But it's all good. Worked out well ;)
My 62-cents worth: There was a day, so frustrated, that I got on with HDR. Then there was a day, so frustrated, that I got on with stitching. Then there was a day, so frustrated, that I got on with blending via masks. Then there was a day that I had that "aha" moment and combined the lot of what I learned and knew... and what one can pull out of the worst of days is amazing... but it takes a fair lot of more than a fair lot of time... as to say, it all takes lots of work and time. It is all worth keeping a secret for the images are not at all photographic, but are more of what the human eye sees easily. Imagine printing what your human eye actually saw, not just some almost representation. I have spent several days on an image, but for having the data to pull from I have been able to get the image, not just a gooder snapshot. The good post can only happen with having the data having been captured and stored. Thereon in is just a bunch of work in post. But once you, for the first time, see that image after all the work you will smile like you never smiled before (in the realm of photography). And even at my current age of 62, when I put in the work and pull that image out, it feels like it always has felt... the best... the first time again :)
You sure are dedicated to photography and your images Gerard! It's lovely to hear how much time and commitment you put into every image. I also agree - it would be amazing to print what the human eye sees.
It's wonderful to see these locations on RUclips. Thank you so much these videos have inspired me to get back out there with my camera. Thank you so much.
Love this, thanks for sharing ..Scotland looks so beautiful
Great images ! It just comes to show you things don't always go according to plan you have to adapt with what mother nature give you and you still can find great images.

Welcome to the journey Bill! It's nice to have you on board and welcome to the world of photography too!
Nice images, Kim - that water is so beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing what you've discovered on the inside of the castle.
Thanks again Gisele. I hope you'll enjoy Sundays video :)
Hi great blogs .. What lens range size are you mostly using
Really good images Kim and you caught the colour of the water. Interesting vlog too, I like the pieces of history/information that you include.
Glad you enjoyed in Brenda (you can learn more about the castle and it's history in next weeks vlog)
Great looking location, look forward to seeing more of the castle up close next time
Thanks Peter :)
Hi Kim
Nice vlog and photos again from you.
Good luck with your workshops.
Thank you very much John!
Very nice video and very nice thought about using the condition available to the best of ability and not be stuck on pre decided shot... In short adapt to conditions very nice Kim..... Happy new year have great and adventurous year ahead...
Thank you Rohan. Really glad you enjoyed the video and the message within :)
The colour of the sea is gorgeous, and you captured it superbly Kim 🙂
Thank you Shelley - it was beautiful :)
great work Kim , can remember visiting that castle when we where up in Scotland on Holiday , brought back some great memories , great images , take care
Thank you Mick - nice to be able to remind you of good memories :)
My Sunday tonic (no gin involved!). Loved the sea colours and the whirling surf around the rock. It's good to focus on a detail of the landscape, in addition to more panoramic views. Nice PICTures!

Enjoyed the vlog. Beautiful location , I'll add that to my list of "must do" locations when I am up there.
Sounds like a plan! Thank you :)

That's so kind of you to say - thank you!
Great vlog as per usual...I really liked the selfie image, I was up there some years ago now and would love to go back, but this time with my camera.....Martin
Thanks again Martin! I hope you make it back there again sometime soon :)
Nice location and the water color looked great. Several compositions available, I would have to stay a week to chase them all😜 thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed Dave. There sure is several compositions to be had! I'll need to go back myself again soon

Thank you Gary and I too agree - many of my best images have been the unexpected ones too. It's good to adapt and look for alternative shots.

I can imagine that it can get very wild there at times! Great location though :)

Thanks David :)

Kim can I ask what make of camera you use for your photography?
The Nikon D7100
