    Ahhhh, ballet is THE art of arts. It's music made visible. I couldn't know how to express it better.

      Can't you say that any dance is music made visible, though? Ballet may be more precise than most dances but you can still see the rhythm of music reflected in any good dancer.

    Just so people know, the royal ballet does a live stream of the Nutcracker every year that you can watch in local cinemas all over the world. It’s really affordable and it’s a great way to see the ballet up close. It’s got extremely difficult to get tickets for the royal opera house in recent years due to demand, so it’s a great way to see the ballet if you never have.

    • @MushroomHat
      @MushroomHat 2 года назад +3

      I realise Ruby mentioned it, but the livestream in the theatres is really worth seeing specifically as it involves behind the scenes interviews and this year Darcy Bussell presented it.

    The Nutcracker is one of my favorite Christmas stories of all time. My Mom read it to me even before I knew that the ballet existed (I had heard the music, but didn't know what it was from). I still remember that long ago night, my Mom reading me various Christmas books late one night, wrapped in a warm blanket, and I remember enjoying The Nutcracker so much. Funny enough, I've been in the process of making an audiobook of The Nutcracker that I'm trying to put up before Christmas if I finish it in time. That's why I found it so cool that you made this video around the same time.

    As a ballet dancer, the Nutcracker has always been a big part of my winter memory, whether it is watching the performance or being on stage. I love your description of the waltz of snowflakes, which made I realized that I’ve been too focused on the techniques and choreography that I’ve overlooked the essence of dance (and arts): to create magic by realizing the impossible. Thank you for this insight, Ruby!

      @Ruby Granger such a cosy, comforting watch. I'm sure you will continue to inspire ✨️ many to see the casual magic you have shared with us in this video....for instance how you described the dancers as snowflakes. 💙 I always loved the whimsy of the Barbie animated version of the Nutcracker as a kid. Now as an adult, you have reminded me to rewatch this and experience it again...I wonder if it will still hold the same wonder as before?
      Are you able to share with us when you feel your book may be ready? I can not wait to read and listen to all of the wonders of your imagination.

    It's great to see anything with both a live orchestra AND live performers. If you like ballet, you will REALLY like opera. Orchestra PLUS singers, soloists and a big chorus so powerful they need no amplification like in a musical. PLUS dancers often and amazing sets.

      @RubyGranger8  2 года назад +1

      I like the idea of watching opera, but I actually didn't really like it when I saw a show (embarrassing to admit, even though it shouldn't be!). It was five years ago though so maybe my tastes have changed since then -- I might have to give it another go x

    The nutcracker has been one of my favorite Christmas stories since I was in elementary school and I began starting a new tradition a few years ago of going to the theater every Christmas to see The nutcracker. My parents were not into ballet but I marvel at the performance of the story even though it's not in words it's in dancing and music. And one time for Ballroom class since I'm a ballroom dancer I did a waltz with the music the grandfather waltz and many of my fellow dancers just loved it.

    What an exquisite way to start Christmas. I too have seen the Nutcracker there at Christmas and it is a far superior way, in my opinion, to start the celebrations than a raucous pantomime, with non-ebrities* (*celebrities I've never heard of) trying to be funny.
    I love your coat too, you always dress so well and for that I applaud you in these days of sloppy and shapeless raiment.

      It is darker, but, in all honesty, I think the book is still appropriate for families, and I was never bothered by it even when I was a kid. I actually thought it was a beautiful story. If you do get around to reading it, I recommend checking out the version translated by Ralph Manheim with Maurice Sendak's illustrations. It's a cool little edition of the book. But if you want a public domain version instead, Project Gutenberg has an excellent one included in "The Serapion Brethren" (which is a collection of some of Hoffmann's works) translated by Major Alex Ewing. And whatever you do, if you can avoid it, do *not* read the translation included on Wikisource. It's awfully inaccurate.

      @@curtthegamer934 Thanks for the information. I found the audiobook (of the original) on Scribd and was looking at the first edition on kindle as well. It is pretty inexpensive so I might do that one (an illustrated version of the original). But I will also look up the specific edition that you mentioned with Sendak's illustrations. That sounds perfect. Can't wait to read the actual book while listening to the music!

    I've never been to the ballet and I would love to see The Nutcracker, however, the Royal Ballet in Stockholm, where I live, have their own version of The Nutcracker where they mix the original story with a Swedish Christmas fairy tale ("Petter och Lottas jul" by Elsa Beskow) and that's not really what I want. So interesting what you said about children's literature and C. S. Lewis quote. I love some children's books, especially the classics but sometimes I caught myself trying to justify why I'm reading them like "Oh, it is really good even if it is for children". As if the fact that is aimed for younger audiences diminishes its quality. If a book is good it shouldn't matter whether is aimed for children or not . By the way, such a lovely video, I adore the Nutcracker💙

    I'm confused. I have a copy of The Nutcracker, but it's written by Alexandre Dumas. I thought this was the book that inspired the ballet. I've never heard of Hoffman's version. Did both books inspire the ballet? I've always loved the Nutcracker since I was little and finally bought a copy of the book last year. I just want to know if I should find a copy of Hoffman's version as well 😊

    • @RubyGranger8
      @RubyGranger8  2 года назад +1

      I'm pretty sure that Hoffman wrote the original - so I suppose the Dumas is a retelling? It's such a wonderful story that it has been retold many many times!

    • @curtthegamer934
      @curtthegamer934 2 года назад

      @@RubyGranger8 Dumas' version was a French "translation" of the original Hoffmann tale. But he embellished a lot of things in it, changed Marie's age to seven and half (instead of seven), explicitly stated that Fritz was nine (his age was never stated in the original, though I personally always pictured him as older than Marie), and, if I recall correctly, cut out Luise entirely. It also includes a fairly long explanation about the differences between German and French Christmas traditions so as not to confuse readers, some of the more violent details are chopped, Fritz is outright made a "bad kid," and overall it just doesn't have the same charm. This version has been translated into English as well because of the differences it has, and some people have ended up reading that one instead of the Hoffmann version. A lot of people will stress that the ballet was based on the Dumas' version rather than the Hoffmann, but in all honesty it's a minor point because it's pretty much the same story, even if only structurally.

    Ruby, have you seen the documentary series ‘On Pointe’ on Disney+? It tells the story of a term at the School of American Ballet in their run up to The Nutcracker at the Lincoln Centre.

    I really love these character/film/performance/book themed videos, it's like stepping inside the story's aesthetic 🤍 would you consider doing something related to the new Wednesday show?

    Have you seen the McKenzie Foy version of the Nutcracker movie, I really enjoyed it. Seeing that movie was like my first experience of the nutcracker. I loved that you had the sugar plum fairy song on your RUclips video too.

    Lucky you!!! I absolutely love the Royal Ballet, I´m a huge ballet fan, also dance as a hobby, and my fave company is the royal ballet! Their productions are so lovely! The dancers have a great balance between good and controlled technique, but also bringing their personality, their own interpretation into the roles. Ofc. many dancers do this, but the royal ballets style alwys gets me. I really hope I can see them live some day

      This is so so interesting to read! Thank you for taking the time to write this! And for recommending other ballets.
      I really want to watch Sleeping Beauty and your recommendation is just the cherry on top of convincing me! And I agree that the second act of The Winter's Tale ballet is just exquisite
