I watched a documentary a couple of years ago, broke my heart seeing him struggle to deal with this. Stayed in my mind and watching this makes me happy to see he's doing OK. Keep strong x
I teared up when he mentioned that his friend quit his job to help take care of him, because to go through what he did and just listening to how he was so upset about not being able to do anything and just feeling down. I hope he remains in a good head space, the people you have around you really matters.
That'd be terribly heart breaking to see your own child hide from you like this! I really feel for this man. It's awesome to see even after all that, he's still positive and wanting to live for his family. I really hope this device he's talking about allow(s) him to hit a golf ball and get back to his favorite activity!
I picked my son up once when he was 3 and lost my balance a little.. it really was no big deal and I wasn't close to falling over but didn't matter. From that point on my little boy was terrified of anyone picking him up. Not being able to pick him up and hold him was horrible but I can't imagine him not wanting to look at me.

Stories like this really make you think about how our individual lives will develop. I'm 23 years old, and to think, like, this guy when he was 23 never in a million years thought that by his current age, he'd have lost all his limbs and have his life altered in such a way. Where will we all be in 10 years? Where will we all be TOMORROW? I could climb an extension ladder tomorrow, as I have every day for the passed decade, and this time slip and fall to my death. Maybe become paralyzed for the rest of my life or something life altering like that. It's a crazy life we live. Makes you thankful for every day you can still take a breath, or step out of bed in the morning. Bless this man and all he's done in spite of his condition. Amazing story.
'Where will we all be tomorrow?'- are you aware (i think you are from the rest of your post) of how profound that seemingly simple question is? The future is a foreign country, and none of us know the terrain or the language. Without a belief in God, which many of us do not have, all we have is hope that tomorrow contrives to keep safe. I morbidly thought of serial killers the other day after watching Dahmer. Can you imagine ending up helpless in the lair of a serial killer who is about to torture you to death? That's a fate noone expects to happen to them too, and is probably the single worst fate that can befall anyone. Or imagine merely being hit by a car or a bus a common occurence which could kill or maim you for life. In fact there are an infinite number of ways to die or be injured, and it is a bloody surprise that we often reach our eighties. Growing old is a precious gift afforded to only the lucky, which is why it's so weird that people disparage and fight against it so often. There is nothing more powerful or beautiful than a contented elderly person. They've survived everything. We should all respect the old far more than we do.
That part when they asked about what he does now. I almost burst into tears. He's a public speaker, Director of Alex lewis Trust, Director World Wheel Chairs Project. Alex you're really superhuman. I'm sitting here with 4 limbs trying to figure my own life out.
I remember watching a documentary about this man. Not ashamed to say that I cried while watching/listening to his story.....a lot. Man is incredibly inspirational.

Give his friend an award while you receive one sir. What an absolute gem to give up his life for his brother. Your life was a double edged sword at that point and your buddy was the sharpener to bring it back to its former glory. Salute to you both.
@@majkeltm I guess you didn't watch the rest then, huh? Either that or redemption is meaningless to you. In which case, I would be very worried if I were in your shoes. Either way, it sounds to me like you should maybe take a look at yourself before judging other people.
@@majkeltm No one becomes an alcoholic by choice. No one WANTS to end up like this. People need to understand that alcoholism is an illness (for that you need to have a littje compassion and stop thinking you're the center of the universe). It's an illness that can hit ANYBODY. It doesn't have anything to do with how smart you are. When people understand that, maybe we can go forward and start treating the horror this illness is.
What a story and what a brave guy. The parts with the Labrador and the best friend really hit me. Also huge respect for the nurse that noticed he was going downhill & did her best to fix it. Legend.
Fellow alcoholic: it's not seriously within the scope of discussion here but it's interesting how briefly he touched on his alcohol use before the amputation. He seems to begrudgingly admit it but that's most likely why the illness almost killed him. It lowers your body's immune response and makes you not care for yourself. Another risk of heavy drinking nobody really talks about...
Thank you. The only child of a lifelong alcoholic here, he refused to admit it his entire life. Even when I ran away at 16 because of his drinking, but I returned two years later. The stress of my leaving brought his M.S. out of remission, and I had to go back and care for him. He was never abusive. He drank away his trauma. He still never talked about it when he was dying of cancer at 52 years old when I was 26. One nurse in the oncology suite said, "Wow-those M.S. drugs did a number on your dad's brain all these years. His scan just now was worse than swiss cheese." For the first time in my life, I broke OUR invisible Father/daughter's secret of shame and replied, "No, he never took M.S. meds. He's just a drunk. And gin, if you have it." I see it like yesterday, every second, and I am almost his age then.
I felt that too. Hot and cold sweats are the worst. Calling dial bottle for medicinal mickies, having to take baby aspirin to slow my heart and stop seizures. Drinking cases of water in a day. I was in my early twenties lol. To think this could have happened to me is insane. Glad I quit
@@OfficialMyxomatosis Oh my God. That must've been horrible. My grandpa was a drunk, but be admitted himself to the clinic saying he has a problem, and quit it... I'm currently 26 and I use every opportunity to get drunk and consume weed, also to escape from trauma. Also a heavy smoker. I used to take antidepresants and whatnot, been to multiple therapists and psychiatrists, and none of the meds or therapies ever helped. It makes me want to quit, honestly, thinking about my future children, which I'll probably never have, because I'm an asshole of a person whom nobody cares about and there's not a woman out there that would bear me children... at least, not a woman that I would want. Then again, I have nothing going on for me, nothing to show for, nothing worthwhile. I'll probably die alone, and the sooner it happens the better for everyone, even my non-yet-existent children.

What a man…Makes you realise that sometimes we have minor problems we believe are major problems that mean the end of the world, when in reality there are people who have to go through horrors like this and still find a reason to go on. Respect
My auntie developed Sepsis from a papercut a few years ago and she lost her limbs too. Alex's best friend told me all about Alex and how he'd gotten through it, which really inspired me and people like Alex provide so much hope for other sepsis victims. Thank you for sharing your story.
Ahh this has got me a little worried now.. I cut my finger open on a can of bean dip pretty deep the other day.. probably got the dip in the wound. I washed it really well and put triple antibiotic cream on it though. Crazy how a tiny little wound can literally kill you
@@derpnerpwerp we think she must have touched a handrail with bacteria on it which infected the wound before it healed. So if you clean cuts properly you're probably fine as long as you're careful to protect it whilst it heals. Sorry to be scary - but better to know and stay safe!
@Sarah Michie oh yeah, I mean even without touching anything there is bacteria all over your skin. There is about 2 to 6 lbs of microorganisms in or on the human body
Beautiful story of how they allowed his dog in to see him. I love that the nurse understood the importance mental state and motivation. You can have the best care in the world and the best circumstances, but if you become depressed and give up, you will still die. Glad the hospital was willing to do what was necessary to give him the strength to carry on.
"I'm not a down kind of guy, but she could she I was clearly upset". Holy understatement shit. That is some balls from somebody who has gone through something which would fuck up pretty much everyone. Hats off Alex, and good luck mate.
Powerful story about a tragic disease, Alex is lucky to be alive. He actually survived 2 diseases that could have killed him; Toxic Shock and Alcoholism. I saw another story on line yesterday about a student who ate some left over food and got a rare form of Meningitis and Strep A also. It turned his blood into poison, he too lost all of his limbs. We don't want to be alarmist and rush to ER every time we are sick, but it could save your life.
"Limb loss is the best thing that ever happened to me".... WOW!! It takes a special type of person to have that kind of vision and clarity after experiencing something so horrifying. Amazing person, i wish him and his family all the very best.
Have never forgotten this guy since watching the film years ago, documenting his illness and early recovery, and I’ve continued to be amazed by his strength, his determination, the progress he’s made and his many achievements since then. A braver man than many, with a gem of a wife and son who I expect were a huge factor in his phenomenal recovery. It’s great to see how you’re doing, Alex - love that you continue to amaze and continue to beat the odds. You are a real powerhouse of a person, such a positive influence for so many others, making a massive difference to those who need it most. 100% respect, and wishing all the love, happiness and success in the world for you and yours!! 💖😁🙏🏼✨
I recently spilled a great deal of smoking hot oil on myself. Started a house fire in the process. Third degree, "full thickness" burns. Back of my right hand and around my wrist, left fingers, down my belly, my left shin, the tops of both feet, and the underside of my right foot. Melted the clothing right off me. I haven't really felt sorry for myself, per se, I attacked my physical therapy with persistence and vigor, and I'm getting better, despite my seemingly inevitable scars. However, I've had a severe case of "FML" for months now. I am certainly not becoming any happier by watching this, but it does put things in perspective. It shows me that while a lot is upsetting me about life right now, I still have cause to be thankful. I truly hate the "it could be worse!" argument, but it's infallible.
It does help and it's worth digging into. Ultimately, only you can look after your mind, and whether you find peace and live a happy life, or exist in turmoil, will come down to what you choose to do with your mind and how much effort you put in. There's a great book called The Art of Happiness written by the Dalai Lama that is full of methods on how to think in order to reduce suffering and increase happiness. Very simple and accessible, but very profound in its benefits. You have the power in your mind to gain so much benefit from this situation that one day you are glad it happened. That's quite a statement, aye? But that's my challenge to you. You can do it.
Gives me chills hearing this, I had meningitis and sepsis when I was 21. Initially my family had been told I was going to die that night, then both my legs would be amputated…. I ended up just losing a few toes. I’m one of the lucky ones ❤️
@@xBeast04x thanks mate, I was kinda ok… 3 weeks ago I ended up in hospital with stage 4 heart failure! Stage 5 is being in a box in the ground 😂 they have it down to between 2 and 3 now. Everything’s much harder to do like keep working as hard as I do but no one lives forever and this is all extra time after the sepsis. I have no children I’ve had a good life so whatever I have left is what it is! Just goes to show how fragile life is!
"I contracted something called Strep-A, it's not well known in the UK." I assume this popped up in my recommended this week because Strep A is doing a number in the UK right now. I'm glad to see Alex is doing better than last time he was on film.
I had this same issue in 2015! I lucked out and went to the hospital a bit quicker than this poor guy. Still lost about 50lbs of flesh from my right side and spent 12 days in the hospital. I've never been the same mentally or physically since. Scary to see what could have happened to me.
@@tomymelon6293 I woke up one morning and might right arm couldn't move at all and I couldn't get off my couch. So my mother came to take my kids to school and made me go. Took 5 days before they figured out what was wrong and I got out of quarantine and they did surgery on my right side. Took about 50 lbs of flesh out of me from my chest and under my arm and down my side. It had started migrating across my chest that morning and I couldn't breathe which is why they decided on surgery. I didn't lose any limbs and only had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital thankfully. I haven't been the same mentally since as every time I get the slightest cold I'm scared as hell. Single dad and was damn scared I'd be leaving my kids all alone.
@@duanemcneill6237 That sounds very scary. I can see why it would impact how you experience illness. I hope you find some relief from that trauma, wishing you the best.
The son is the saddest thing.. what a man. Honestly, he’s more of a legend than all of us. I have major stomach issues that have made me debate suicide a few times but things like this make you keep soldiering
Please remember suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Even when it feels like it will never get better, someday it will. Look to God for comfort, I will pray His angels hold you ♥️
What a man! Hearing about his son cowering away from him broke my heart as I've got 3 children myself. I went through a marriage breakdown and custody battle that honestly had me pondering suicide. It was the thought of my children that stopped me, so (for considerably less reasons) I fully understand his words. He overcame major tribulations and came out the other side a truly better man. What an inspiration.
Are you kidding me? If that happened to me I'd be better off dead, not even a doubt in my mind. Give me a steak, a bottle of Jack, and a hot dose and let's get this over with. A life with no limbs is not a life I'd be interested in living
I remember watching a special about Alex Lewis a number of years ago, shoutout to Lucy his partner who was particularly Amazing and left an impression through commitment and determination, and both to Alex himself , what an incredible man
Stories like this one really gives you the "live everyday like it's your last" feeling. Unreal how a seemingly small illness like the man flu could eventually lead to this. Keep your head up sir!
Wow. This is enlightening, especially for me. I had toxic shock when I was a teen. I was flown to Kansas City hospital and admitted to ICU where I stayed for 3 weeks. I never imagined that it could have gotten this bad. I feel lucky to have made it out unscathed.
I remember watching a short documentary about you a long while ago. I'm so glad to see you're still going on strong, giving these interviews and not letting anything knock you down. I can't even start to comprehend your struggle so I won't disrespect you by trying to, but know everyone who watched this video certainly wishes you the best future. :)
Any good parent would. My dad has gone through 3 years of kidney failure and dialysis 3 times a week never behind able to travel said he wanted to give up so many times but didn’t because of us just yesterday he got a kidney transplant from a Donor.
I hope this spreads the thought that anything can happen, even when you least expect it. Don’t take a moment for granted and stay with the ones that you love ❤️ have a great day 👍🏻.
What a great guy the friend was, that gave up his job and 6 months of his life to come and live with you to help you. I bet not many people have friends like that. Maybe family members but not friends.
Your friend quitting his job to come and help you. That’s such amazing love and compassionate. A true brother. You’re so incredibly lucky to have him, and you must be a truly beautiful person to be loved so much by those around you. Your story is so harsh. The reality of life is shockingly unforgiving. The way you’ve overcome is so inspiring to me. That you were able to overcome this and still live a great life full of love. I think I would have crumbled. I’m glad you’re doing well and I wish you many more years of amazing life.
Good on you for taking a tragedy and turning it around into such a positive thing. You're not just helping with these tangible projects giving people prosthetics, and wheelchairs and all of the other great work you do. You're helping people just by showing what a positive thing something like this can be. And if you can turn something THAT difficult and potentially tragic and turn it into the positivity you have. It just shows everyone that they can do the same thing with their situation. My difficulties don't even compare to what you must have been through, but you've definitely inspired me in that sense. And I've really needed it lately. So, thank you. Keep fighting the good fight. Cheers, mate.
What an inspirational dude. Definitely teared up at him talking about his dog and his friend quitting his job for 6 months to help with the transition. Just incredible
Thanks for sharing your story. Nothing but respect to you, your friend and family. It shows how much we take for granted in life. We only ever realise what we have when its already too late. As a fellow recipient of NHS care, thank you for demonstrating how great it is. We are blessed to have the NHS.
WOW. What an example of inner strength, love of family/friends, and a positive attitude. Total inspiration. Makes me reflect on my own life and attitude.
I remember watching the documentary of him in hospital and how hard it was for him to keep positive and I’m so happy to see this so many years later and that he’s pulled through! His best friend is amazing for helping him get through it
My son got strep in his bloodstream from being vulnerable due to a broken leg hematoma and almost died. He wasn't even 2 years old. He's gonna be 13 in two weeks now. If it had stayed strep throat it wouldn't have been so bad. Strep and Staff are no joke!
I'm also a patient at Salisbury (Odstock) hospital. The staff in the Burns Unit / Plastic Surgery Unit are beyond excellent. I have nothing but the up most respect for every single one of them. Long live the NHS, we are so, so lucky to have it.
Sir you are a true inspiration, I have been diagnosed with Ms and at times think my life has ended as I knew it and watching you has given me hope for the future bless you your family, friend and dog.
Thank you for sharing your story. I was stabbed in the neck and had the bottom half of my chin almost completely cut off by my ex-husband. I went through a few reconstructive surgeries to make my chin look normal and decrease the size of the scar that runs from the right side of my neck to the middle of my chest. It hurts to be looked at as different and to feel people staring at you. I wish you well on your continued journey to healing.
My mum had strep necrotising fasciitis (can't remember which sub type) and died in a matter of hours, before she could even get to hospital and have surgery to amputate. It was extremely traumatic for those of us around her, so I can only imagine how difficult it was for those around Alex, who I would imagine fet very helpless. I hope Alex is doing well and wish him all the best for the future.
I’m a 51 year young man, who balled his eyes out, when he told the story of his dog coming into the room. Then, if that wasn’t enough the story of how much of a true Guardian Angel his friend who gave up his own life,(in essence) to take care of him-Wow, Anyway, it turned out to be soo positive, what an absolute bad ass!!!
This was one of the craziest stories I’ve ever seen back in the day. From being the man of the family to completely helpless almost overnight is heartbreaking! His wife however didn’t abandon him sure enough, kudos to her! Some women will leave you if you lose your job, let alone your legs.. Prayers for Alex & his family🙏
I’ve never heard of a more courageous human being than this man, my goodness. This was one of the only times in 36 years on planet earth that I teared up, god bless 🙏🏼
Worst part of his sickness was not losing his limbs but the fact that his kids didn't want to kiss him goodbye anymore. That thought breaks my heart every time, but I hope his kids are fine with this now and learned to live with it
Yet the Bible says it's profitable for a man to lose one of his eyes, one of his hands, or his feet, then that both hands and feet be cast into hell. We value this life so much, but this life becomes a distraction from God, and so we do not make preparations for eternity and do not call on Jesus Christ. If we care so much about our limbs, then we should care about our own souls. Whoever is reading this, please, get right with God. Call on Jesus name...
I really love Alexes story. He completely opened himself up to life, and his illness was the trigger that he used/needed. I think many of us would do the exact opposite in his situation, so I salute him. Good job man, turning your life around takes everything out of a person.
A wonderful man, so happy he chose to fight, and that he was blessed with the best friend a man could ask for. True friendship like that is rare. Hope he gets to have many happy years ahead of him 💕
Just amazing to see how love built up this man again. That friend truly has a heart of gold. He knew the importance of his friend gaining confidence through independence. Relearning how to do things with this new situation is major.
What a beautiful, strong and resilient soul! He could have so easily thrown in the towel many times yet he persevered and made the best of his situation. Even more, he found a way to take something tragic and transformed it into a blessing that he shares with other people. He’s a true role model and I have the utmost respect for this incredible man.
What an absolute specimen of a man. I don't think many people could go through what you did, let alone come out the other side of it so positive. You seem to have turned this nightmare you had to go through and flipped the script. Not only that but to then go and help others in the ways you have, Your a fucking inspiration and more man than I could ever be. Good luck with your golf my guy, you deserve happiness. All the best in your future, you living legend.
How many times have I heard stories about people who have come through extreme adversity and said it was the best thing that has happened to them as a person to grow! I as one, have not such courage, and how many others have fallen by the wayside? These people are inspirational, but I regret that not all of us have his inner strength. Wish I had!!!!!
I saw his story before. Lives in my head. Never forget all the PT but he kept on, did not give up, even when he really wanted to. Much respect. I hope u have everything u ever need

Legend.
Been watching the full documentary on the dude at least once a year up until now. His willpower is just something else.
No arms or legs, but more of a man than most. Inspiring story, and someone people should admire.
And gin, if you have it."
I see it like yesterday, every second, and I am almost his age then.

Ahh this has got me a little worried now.. I cut my finger open on a can of bean dip pretty deep the other day.. probably got the dip in the wound. I washed it really well and put triple antibiotic cream on it though. Crazy how a tiny little wound can literally kill you

I’m sorry to hear that happened to you, it must be so painful. Hang on, your life is so important! Perspective is helpful. Thank you for sharing
You will get there!!!!

Yet the Bible says it's profitable for a man to lose one of his eyes, one of his hands, or his feet, then that both hands and feet be cast into hell.
We value this life so much, but this life becomes a distraction from God, and so we do not make preparations for eternity and do not call on Jesus Christ.
