A pizza delivery man with a poor sense of direction toils at his dysfunctional workplace, dealing with offbeat co-workers and a temperamental boss. In the middle of it, he makes a delivery to a wrong address -- and what he finds there compels him to stay, even if it costs him his job.
Writer-director Justin Robinson has crafted a uniquely touching blend of deadpan comedy with openhearted drama, full of memorable characters struggling with the undertow of sadness, grief and inadequacy, in a world that often doesn't look hospitably on authentic emotional experience and expression.
The film takes time to create and develop its eccentric rhythms, building its careworn yet colorful world through details as careful as the working-class costumes, affectionately overstuffed sets and even the bumper stickers on cars.
The cinematography has a warmth and a brightness to it, and the framing and shots -- which may initially remind viewers of American indie classes like BOTTLE ROCKET or NAPOLEON DYNAMITE -- emphasize the offbeat world these characters. The wonderfully unique dialogue and performances add to this atmosphere of Americana-gone-wild, capturing both the quirkiness of the characters and their unique ways of expressing themselves.
But though their world may seem initially playful and even whimsical, it becomes clear as we get to know them that they are struggling in many ways. They are struggling to connect, to be heard and seen, and even to find a reason to stay alive. Despair and emotional pain isn't that far from the surface, and deft performances straddle the line between the mix of deadpan humor and genuine pathos that characterizes the film.
POPEYE THE PIZZA MAN is ultimately about the importance of reaching out to one another, despite dealing with our own issues and struggles. Its ultimate handling of suicide as its subject matter may seem roundabout, but as the result of its careful buildup, it is also done with authentic emotion and heartfelt respect. Short films about suicide can often struggle with the weightiness of the subject with the compressed time frame, but this film earns its audience's intimacy with its characters and their emotional journeys. The result is a warmly compassionate postcard from small-town America about what it means to be "there" for someone, woven together with great skill, humor, and sincerity.

@Justin Robinson That was a really good story. I love the art of storytelling especially when everything isn't spelled out explicitly. It engages the audience so much more when it's planned and executed well. Nice job on the callbacks too. Seems to me that we share some of the same filmmaking influences. I can see this playing in a festival alongside someone like Wes Anderson or Noah Baumbach. Long comment short: I don't usually comment on RUclips in general but this was well deserved. Honestly one of my absolute favorites on Omeleto. Keep going. There's greatness in there.
I have to say, I actually passed this by a few times, and now I am happy that I didn't pass it up again. I am an old lady, and been through a lot in my life. I have a few suicides in my family and it is always so very tragic. I was a Police Officer for my career, and I have been to more than one of these. It breaks my heart to see the family of the victim as they all try desperately to find the answers to why this person took their own life. I have talked to a few suicidal people, thinking maybe I could help, and in a few cases I think I did. Everyone has their own reasons, but it is always the same for the family members left behind. If you are thinking about this way out, please think about your family because they will feel the pain of your death for the rest of their life and trust me, that is the hardest life to live. Who ever did this video should take a bow, it was well written, well acted and it brought tears to the eyes of this old woman.
Hi Elizabeth, I felt like replying to you. Your words are heartfelt and really lovely. I have also lost a few people along the way, both to suicide and natural causes. As you pointed out, it really does affect the ones left behind. It's the kind of wounds that leave scars that never heal, just fester.
We try to spread love and not hate, what more can we do I wonder. Oh I suppose there's always more we could do, where's the line ? Angels walk among us they say, you seem like you're one of them. Take care lovely lady.

Depression isn't painful sacrifice, that's why people cut themselves. They do it just to feel something. Anything to destract them from the sadness they face in life. Life is here for everyone, sometimes it just takes a pizza delivery guy to make you snap out of it. Suicidal people are not cowards, they are soldiers in a war they shouldn't be fighting for. It's up to us to help them realize that. Throwing around words like God, Jesus and religion aren't going to help. Even if Christianity is the one true religion.

Easily weakest part and made me almost turn the whole thing off, but I figured I'd give this film still a chance since it had a funny intro with the close-up of the guys mouth making weird noises.

This is incredible writing. It's a combination of funny with a deeply serious issue. It was so touching to see the napkin which showed he did help someone. And that someone was standing in the rain (their first meeting conversation about rain drops) and watching him continue to help someone else.
Such a warm and caring soul.
I thought this was the most ridiculous short I had ever watched and it turned out to be one of the very best. Made me laugh, cry, laugh, and cry a better kind of cry. Jordan Crowder is beautiful.
So what's the timeline look like on that? Did you watch the whole thing thinking it was the most ridiculous and then afterwards upon closer reflection, you realised it was not? Or did you change your mind part way through, going from ridiculous-to-ridiculously-good in less like 20 minutes? How did that happen?

i came searching through comments section for a Seth Rogan reference. i was going to make a Seth Rogan / Paul Rudd comment had i not found yours.

The ending made me cry like a kid. We need more Popeyes in our life.
the message i got from this was that human connection and lending helping hand to people can overcome any sadness. The main guy has a somewhat sad existence but he doesnt let that stop him from helping others. When the one guy shoots himself the main character gets discouraged but upon finding out the dude is alive he realizes the smallest gestures can help the most. Great story and acting. Got a feel of Napoleon Dynamite for sure.
Years later, but yeah, the first lines delivered by the guy on the couch were said just like lines were delivered by ND.
This is incredibly well written. You have "“Most of us, we’re just little drops of rain", you have "the worlds a shitstorm and I am just holding an umbrella", you also have the story of the aunt, who died during or before a major thunderstorm...
You have "he looked like a fish trying to get back to the water", and the end scene is that its raining, and he is holding an umbrella.

Also this is beautiful... Sadly most people think that people who kill themselves are selfish. Absolutely not... Yes it hurts those you leave behind... But they have a psychotic BREAK. That is not on them.. Also most places have little to no mental healthcare.. What do they expect people to do?? It'd so sad.. But to say they are selfish is sick.
I used to feel this way until I worked on this, and it truly helped me empathize with these people's situations. Saying "suicide is selfish" is just a gross misstatement that doesn't advance the discussion of the problem.
Antaya Fairless I still kind of do think that, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have sympathy for them. I try not to take a stand on it these days though due to the fact that I will probably never know what it is like to have depression extreme enough to want to end your own life.
It's not only sick but judge mental and what gives anyone the right to judge someone going through something they themselves can't relate to. Only God knows and only his opinion counts.
I have struggled with suicide for many years and I witnessed my dad struggle with suicide for most of my childhood and my dad witnessed his dad struggle with suicide for most of his life until my grandpa killed himself when my dad was a teenager and I was a toddler ... I am 25 now and I'm still heavily effected by this after all these years and I understand that mental illness can be genetically inherited but my point of typing this whole big message is that......suicide is selfish but it's not always wrong to be selfish..... the misconception comes in when people view being selfish as a terrible thing to do which is ridiculous
cuz YOUR FEELINGS AREN'T PART OF REALITY and until your feelings are in some way expressed they constantly affect only you
but wait
I'm NOT saying that ANYBODY should commit suicide if they feel suicidal ...but I don't think anyone can say that if you feel like you should put yourself first regardless of how it effects other that you would be wrong for doing what you feel is best for yourself

Part of the problem with a lack of Mental Health Care is that "caring" people don't want to stigmatize those that seek it, and so end up minimalizing the care that would actually be of help. Sadly, we've had a bad history for asylums and wards and such where the patients would get severely abused. I think these two factors combine and essentially force people out on their own into life situations that they are not equipped to deal with. Where "not equipped" can mean anything and everything from addictions and dependencies to overwhelming circumstances and actual physical causes. A solution? REAL caring people make the effort to gather those that need help and figure out what each needs and how to get it for them.
A low-key, almost gentle look at a depressing subject, very well done. Thanks for posting this one!
This is hits super close to home. As I’ve had very close members take their life’s as young as 15 in the past year. And struggling with it myself this is such a well done project and puts things into better perspectives.

OMG!! This touched my heart in so many ways! I am retired military Army to be exact. As many of you know at least those of you who are in the USA that the armed forces and veterans has a lot of suicides. I am public health and I used to teach suicide awareness and prevention annual training along side the chaplain. We used to say suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. On the surface level that is true but like everyone who has been depressed knows or if you know someone who has been depressed or has committed suicide (sadly we ALL know someone who has) your problem or their problem is something that they feel they cannot get over or live through...and at that MOMENT in time maybe it isn't. Life is about many such moments. Bad, good, okay...all of which can be worked through and even if YOU cannot think of a good solution or resolution, you can always talk to someone who can. THINGS no matter how they may appear at the time can ALWAYS be worked through. I have to tell myself the very same thing all the time. Okay, I have to say that the actors in this short was OUTSTANDING!!!
Well said, worked as a Dr. for the VA, in a relationship with a retired military, my grandfather and my father served in the military... there is sooo much to heal...only God....

Really enjoyed that. Only recently discovered 'Omeleto' and that is one of the best I've seen. Quirky and interesting characters, excellent stuff. The only disappointment was that it ended, I wanted more. Would love to see a feature length sequel.
I personally like the brevity of the Omeleto shorts. It lets them focus on one thing narratively without the need of filler. It can stay focused and concise.
Fantastic! Actors were best I've seen in a short. Had a "Napoleon Dynamite" vibe, but much deeper meaning, delving into the tragedy of human existence and the lingering effects of suicide on those left behind to wonder if they could have done more to help. I'm 20 I lost my brother to suicide a year ago.. he shot him self In his truck in front of me. I spent 4 days cleaning it bc he wrote that " he wanted me to sell the truck." He was 22.. also he was my only brother. I know how you feel, but all we can do is live on and enjoy the memories.. stay strong man

first time in a while I've fully cried...even longer since I've cried to a movie--almost the whole time too. this half hour movie is some of the most powerful filmmaking I've ever seen. major props to Mr. Robinson and everyone involved with this project.

I was deeply moved by this film, and Jordan Crowder's acting was incredible. Just watching the emotion play across his face while listening to his friend describe the suicide at around 16:00 made the film worth watching. The redemption at the end really clinched it. I kept thinking that there was something really familiar about Jordan, and discovered on IMDb that he's Steven Crowder's brother.
I agree, I really appreciated the short. But who was the guy the camera focused on in the rain at the end? I'm probably just daft, but I've been scrubbing the video to find the guy again.

From experience I can say that living your life trying to help people that don't want to be helped and being surrounded by negative people that hate your positivity is it very draining and disheartening thing. This film is beautifully made.
This is always one of those shorts I've watched over the years... that i've never forgot. Its always stuck with me. I felt something inside when I watched this.. and that doesnt happen often.
