I lost my little sister at the weekend. It was totally unexpected (she was quite young) but it was in circumstances where she was on life support for the last 12 hours or so. It meant we all had time with her to say our goodbyes before the ventilator was switched off. Today, my son's partner (an A&E surgeon) said something quite profound. She said we'd been given a gift...a chance to say goodbye which many don't have. Please treasure the time you have left with your nan, talk with her and about her. So much of the lives of the previous generation disappear when they pass. I often think, now I'm older, of all the conversations I wish I could have with my grandparents..all the things they've seen, the detailed knowledge they have of their parents and grandparents. Sorry it's a bit long but I just wanted to say look the knowlege you have as a gift of time.
Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry you’ve lost your sister 🤗❤️. That’s so sad and thank you for sharing your story with me, I truly appreciate it. That’s a really good way of looking at it, and I will remember this for the time I’m in right now. I hope you find peace in your lovely memories xxxx
Cute top and I really like the bedsheet toile version also. I love the fabric placement. I would love that top with the last jumper/pinafore that she made. My six year old soul loves the simplicity of that kind of outfit.
How clever you are in the placement of the pattern on your toile. Perms can be very damaging to your hair but I like you very much with straight hair. Love the teal colored fabric with the flowers. So enjoy your videos
Thank you so much, I’m glad I was able to utilise the flowers. It’s made me want to try using an embroidered tablecloth to make something similar. Yeah I used to have my hair coloured all the time and never had breakage like this. So straight it is for while lol xx
I totally understand how you feel about so many ideas for projects going through your head. I just retired a few days ago, and i have so many things i want to sew! I just need to centre myself, and make a list of where i want to start. I am so sorry your perm has damaged your hair. Many years ago I decided to get a perm. Unfortunately, the stylist totally forgot about me while I had the perming solution on my hair. What a disaster. My scalp and hair were burned. What hair that didn't break off was a fizzy mess. And a few weeks later I found out i was pregnant. I had to go to a friend's wedding 6 months pregnant, probably looking 9 months pregnant, with horrible hair. My hair was never the same. But life goes on, just no more perms!
Lists are definitely the way to go and it’s great when you can cross things off! Thank you, I certainly won’t be getting a perm again. Wow I can’t believe you were left with the solution on your hair for too long, you poor thing. Yes life goes on and new hair will grow 😀xx
I was just thinking about your curls when you mentioned it! You should really go and see Natasha at hair magic in Loughborough. She’ll be able to help you with your curls and getting it back into condition.
Thanks Emma, it such a shame as I was so happy with how the perm had initially gone and throughout December it was fine. It’s mainly on my weak side…just annoying as now I need the hair to grow back again before I can do anything with it. I’ll give them a call to see what they can advise xx
An idea for pressing the thick seams no iron required…… I use large heavy books and place on top of the front seams and leave them overnight , I find it really works and the fabric remembers where to stay.
PINKS my colour lol I can see another commission coming on with that pink boucle material! Look forward to the try on piece when it arrives x Although it's unlikely to fit me if it fits you 😆 🤣 Love your chats on here 💕xx
I put the sleeves in last night so will get it sent, but think perhaps another toile in the size up might be a good idea too. Really surprised at the sizing on this pattern. Xx
Lovely to hear your plans but so sorry to hear the news of your Nan, the emotional rollercoaster we are on at this time can be so difficult but I find sewing does help take you to another place, if just for a short time. I really like the top you had on but not sure of the raglan sleeve in a woven, I will try it and hope it doesn’t come up tight as I like the loose fit. Sorry to hear about your hair too, it’s so important that our hair looks and feels good but you have a plan in place and yes a Bob will suit you while it grows out. Look forward to seeing what it looks like. Also nice to see your son taking a peak at what you were recording 🙂 ❤
Hi Yvonne, thank you so much 😊, you’re right sewing is a good place to be when you need to take your mind off things. The sizing for the orla top is very generous, so hopefully it’ll be ok for the raglan section. My hairdresser should be coming this week, so will hopefully work out a plan. I didn’t intend to go shorter, but it might be best to get the condition back and to have some of the perm cut out. Oh yes, that was Harry, he wasn’t at school, feeling under the weather! Xx
My daughter has hair like yours. She uses John Frieda curl shampoo and serum. After washing she scrunches it into a t shirt on her head. While it dries. Straighten ers will damage your hair more, so always use a heat protector
Thanks Janice, I have been using the frizz ease curly shampoo and conditioner and I also had some only curls London products for Christmas but unfortunately nothing has stopped the breakage. I do use a heat protectant too, I think unfortunately I have such a weak side of hair on my head for some reason. I’ll have to leave well alone in future xx
Thank you!! I’ve always liked my hair straight too, but was trying to embrace the curl as it was more voluminous lol. I do like lots of colour so it’ll be interesting to see if bright colours are my palette 😀 xx
Really enjoyed your video. I know what you mean about wanting to make lots of things at the same time - not enough hours in the day! Love the fabric for the Orla tops. The blue brushed cotton suits you. Will try not to think of pjs when I see you! 😂
Lovely makes. I hope the pink boucle is in your colour range; it'll make a cute coat. I have just made arrangements to have my colours analysed by Chelsie. Really looking forward to it, but holding back on making anything until I know what suits me.
Thank you! Oh I hope so too as I really do like pink, plus I think it’ll go with quite a few of my handmade garments. Oh that’s great news, you’ll have to let me know how you get on with your colour analysis. I have mine booked for the end of this month. Xx
Love the blouse you have on, colour looks really good on you. I had my colours done ages ago & I think you will find it interesting. Thinking about what you said about the sage brush top & colours, it could be that certain shades of a particular colour are better than others. Thank you, another great video.❤
Thanks Ali, I’m so pleased with the Orla blouse and I love the colour also. I’m looking forward to getting my colours done. I’ll let you know how it goes. Yes that’s true about the shade of pink! Xx
I've been getting regular perms every 6 months for the last few years now and have never had the problem of breakage you describe. I use a shea butter hair mask once a week after washing which keep my curls moist and my hair strong. I do 2 - 3 shea butter hair mask treatments in the 2 weeks leading up to each perm to make sure there is plenty of moisture in my hair before my hair is wound on to the rods and the perm chemicals go on. Perm chemicals dry out the hair some while processing, but if there is enough moisture in the hair beforehand, they cannot dry it out enough to cause breakage (think of dry skin cracking - same principle i.e. moisturised skin doesn't crack) - and subsequent shea butter mask treatments put the moisture back in the hair that the perm took out for healthy curls. Were you heat styling your hair before your perm? This is likely the reason why the perm caused damage - i.e. the hair had already been dried out too much by heat styling - and is the real culprit, not the perm! 2 perms a year is much less damaging to your hair than daily heat styling! My advice is to let your hair grow out and avoid heat styling on the new growth while it does. Once your new growth is long enough, then start perming your hair again. You look MUCH better with curls, and regular perms can be done perfectly safely as is the case for my hair. I would never dream of going back to straight hair ever again!!!
Hi Natalie, thanks so much for all the information. I’ve never tried Shea butter before. My hair has always been pretty dry, but not to the point of causing breakage by my usual styling, this has just happened since the perm which I’m guessing is a combination of both the chemical and dryness. I’ve decided not to cut it off but to leave it to grow out and hopefully the condition will restore. I did start using the only curls London products which included a leave in moisture conditioner but unfortunately that didn’t help. I do prefer my hair curly too and will try and restore my natural waves once I’ve had regrowth xx
@@sewlittletime Believe me, it's previous heat styling responsible for this - your straighteners/crimpers are your real enemy, and you should throw them in the bin immediately! If you get your hair trimmed/evened out and layered, and start to do regular shea butter masks as soon as possible, you will find that when properly moisturised the shorter sections of hair will not fluff up and you can wear your hair curly again and it will look good. Paul Mitchell hair sculpting spray is amazing for defining curls when styling to prevent fly away hair - I towel dry my hair, add some mousse and finish with sculpting spray and let my hair air dry normally, or occasionally use a diffuser on low heat setting only. Wearing your natural waves as your healthy regrowth emerges is a good idea as an interim, as it means you are not straightening the new growth and progressively destroying its condition with heat. However once you get into a routine of regular shea butter moisturising masks you will realise that your new growth is not dry - and towards the end of the year it will be good to perm. You will notice a huge difference after your next perm if you follow my advice. Your curls will be healthy and not dry, and there will be no breakage - trust me! With a few simple changes to your routine, you will be able to do perm after perm after perm like I do resulting in beautiful heathy soft curly hair indefinitely! Show my comments to your hairdresser when you speak to them and work out a strategy going forwards. Your natural waves are nice, but you suit curls WAY more, so please don't give up on perms - they are not the problem, heat styling is!!!
October was my first ever perm after wanting it done since a teen. My hair falls out on wash days, in handfuls. So I’m going to try the hair masks to see if it helps. I am naughty and I don’t brush it or comb it between washing, which I wonder is just natural shredding as it comes out in one go instead of over a week. I don’t think I could go back to my old hair, I love the curls too much!
@@vickywiseman6896 Glad you’re loving your new curls. I would imagine it is natural shedding. I always have quite a bit of hair come out when washing, since I was a teen. I’ve actually now decided to cut out most of the perm as I’ve had it levelled off to the breakage so far and I don’t like it curly that short, so will grow my natural wave back and go with that xx
@@vickywiseman6896Sounds like natural shedding to me.
