Rear Mode Actuator Ford Expedition

  • With a very noticeable clicking noise coming from the rear drivers side area located near the rear hatch as well as warm air only blowing from the rear of the vent system...we dive in for the cause and fix.
Most vehicles have so much that takes place that is completely out of sight and out of mind...until something stops working. (Especially cold air conditioning that is needed in the 115 degree temps of an Arizona summer...ouch.)
We quickly identified the clicking, popping noise coming from the Rear Mode Actuator. No fancy tools needed here. At best if you want to be special, pull out a mechanics stethoscope and listen in...otherwise the writing is pretty much on the wall.
The Rear Mode Actuator is responsible for funneling the correct amount of hot, cold or blend of air depending on what you set the blend knob, switch or button to on the dash. Essentially the function is very similar to a door that you simply open and close.
We chose to go with MotorCraft . Here is the part :
    MotorCraft Part # YH-1856-1L2Z-19E616-AA
    Amazonwww.amazon.com/dp/B004A2D4NY/... (NOT an Affiliate)
Here is a great diagram of the layout :
    www.amazon.com/Ford-1L2Z19E61...
This particular repair is simple enough. Be particularly careful when removing the plastic components as they can easily break and cost beaucoup money to replace ( yes..looks like cheap plastic, however, they can fetch ridiculous money...take your time here.)
The panel removal tools can be found here:
    www.amazon.com/Performance-To...
For the most part people...actuators of all types can click and pop. They are electrical mechanical components and specifically as you can see in the video explanation the shaft can come undone from a broken plastic seated gear and move when it should not creating excessive play and that popping noise. If you happen to have an actuator in the front dash ,that will be more challenging and in some occasions require removal of the complete dash assembly.

You never mentioned the model year of the Expedition or the 2 different types of rear blend door actuators, one with the D shaft and the other with the cross style actuator. Got to get the correct actuator. And you can do it a lot quicker w/o removing the seat belts, etc., just by loosening the bottoms of the C and D column covers on that side and removing the cup holder and removable tray. The panel is flexible enough to pull it out a couple of inches and use an 8 mm ratcheting wrench to remove the 3 screws that hold it in, and then replace the actuator.

Mine doesn't make clicking noises. However, the AC doesn't blow in the rear seats (from the ceiling). The AC does blow for the front seats and back in the cargo area.
A computer check said it was the title of this video. Should I replace it or is the issue something else?

  • @jamorinsr100

My air is blowing and blowing cold. The main issue is that the air is blowing out of the vent in the back seat. I do hear the actuator clicking in the back though

  • @guris5
    @guris5 3 года назад +1

    Hello,
Both of my back actuators aren't working. The one not showed on this video was clicking. The one on this video just not moving. I replaced the one clicking first which distributes air from floor to ceiling. And use that same one to test the other HVAC blend actuator on this video. Before purchasing a second one to be sure. But I still get no cold air on the back. I can however feel it get warmer now compared to before. When i raise the temperature on the back, but when I lower the temperature just stays regular outside air, not cold at all. Do both actuators in the back have to be working for this to function properly? I figured get rig of the one that distributes the air and keep the one that changes from hot to cold only.
    Side note,
My front dashboard actuator also clicking. But I just saw in your video it has nothing to do with back AC. Also replacing because i get clicking annoying noise. And cooler air when i raise the temperature on my front air controls rather than when I lower the temperature. 😂

First this is a great video and the only one I have found for my specific vehicle. I have a 2013 Expedition EL Limited 4x4. When I turn on the rear heat full hot and full blower from the front controls, no air will blow from the top vents. When I turn on the rear full cold and full blower, then I get air from the vents. Do you think this could be an Rear Blend Door Motor, or one of the front ones? Also when sitting in the back and using temp control setting, heat and cold air blows from all vents. So it's only when using the front temp controls.
