Are we gonna RUN OUT OF FUEL in the middle of Indian Ocean crossing??? SVA Episode 106

  • We took off from Maldives to Seychelles crossing with our 2 buddy boats: Zatara and Rehua. It did not look like the perfect weather forecast, by any means, but the season for this crossing was about to close in Northern hemisphere... Therefore, we didn't know if there would be a better time to cross in the coming weeks...
    Well... to say the least - it did not go well... We have never run so many fuel calculations, measured our speed, RPM, and burn rates for the slightest improvement in economy... We just HAVE to make it! See it for yourself!
    We do finally land in the Seychelles, at Victoria, but only on FUMES. But, a bit more fuel onboard than one of our buddy boats that left the Maldives with us!
    Thanks so much for watching 🙏

    One positive for the unfortunate no favorable wind passage, is the excellent footage of Aquarius from afar by drone. Beautiful glassy seas with a sexy Amel Ketch sliding thru it.

Now, I find out it's 80% when you eat, and 20% what you eat... Now I weigh the same as when I graduated college. Had to through out almost all my cloths this year..... @@SailingAquarius Would you please share a bit on that. I've been noticing similar but had no conclusions'. Perhaps yours will avoid stress. The use of collagen seems to make a huge difference but I notice muscle pulling more often but that seems to be related to stress and lick of sleep . (I tend to be a night owl and lately so many people are in need of help and yet unwilling to do the simple thins to solve the situation.
      Segway into my comment before: I remember the doldrums for weeeeeeks and weeeks and I remember my father refusing to use the motor to find some wind. It was horrible to say the least. In those days there was not even the thought of computers, navigation devices and radio was sporadic. For me it was even worse because I have always has good instincts and some strange ability to feel what cannot be seen and I knew that if only he would use the motor and head in that direction there was wind...
      Same feeling when I said we must come about at knight off the coast of Panama after anchor chain broke due to the weather. We ran aground into 3ft of water (we draw 7ft). We lost 8 anchors, bent the keel and if not for the local villagers giving use burlap bags to fill with sand the boat would have been busted up in no time.
      To my knowledge we are the only vessel to get off that are along the coast and survive.
      I remember the coffee. As a child I was not allowed to have it but this was an exception and man oh man was it smooth and wonderful nothing comes close.
      So the question is do we avoid those seemingly horrible events and the memories and stories to share? "Adventures" or embrace them and willingly call on our Heavenly Father to rescue us and share that adventure? In hindsight I am grateful for the adventures because they have caused me to know Creator better even though my stress is for others to come to him first and prevent the agony of what evil is doing on purpose. In other words I am good with "natural occurrences'" and see them as necessities of a full life, but man made evil like this planedemmic and the murder of millions of people for greed and power is another. At the same time it is exponential when you have a solution and no one will use it. In fact it seems people would rather suffer than to exercise their authority and put their agents in their places or remove them from office. Every time it appears that it is directly due to relying on man instead of Creator.
      Adults learning hard lessons is one thing but to allow children to suffer and die at the hands of evil is another. Which is why as much as I yearn for the water and boat life again I remain here doing what I can, grateful for people like you who take the time to video and share your travels and adventures and lessons learned. Blessings
      Anyone interested in an effective and efficient solution to the in-field-tration of evil and corrupt in positions of public trust please consider getting Continued Competency Training (testing) Legislation passed in your local area. It has to be done sooner or later, especially before they complete their plan of killing off 2/3rds of the worlds population (see agenda 21 and Georgian guide stones and determination of international court finding them guilty of genocide yet they walk free.

    Reading comments before watching.. Lived on a boat from 6 to 12 and had many. A motor is merely ballast! I never had one that ran so I never needed fuel, oil (remember a motorboat is a "stinkpot") and back sailing into a slip is easy enough, especially with two. My last sailboat was 32ft and i sailed upstream in narrow lanes all over the Chesapeake bay and inlets, even through mud single handed so I'm sure two can handle it fine. As an avid windsurfer ...well certainly no motor there. I do like to have an electric trolling motor for really tough bridges to go under and the wind can be really tricky and the current strong and rude people under motor cutting you off, but that is about it A good genoa is a must and easy furler is super useful. For years I used it only to wind up fully and out fully, till I saw a woman single handed use it to assist in coming about. DOUGH... Someone stole my boat before I could try it out for myself.
    Ok now let me take a look at the water ... I am so missing... and your adventure.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад

      Yes, we don't like using the engine. But, sometimes the schedule, the wind, a coming storm, or ? will change the plans and push us to start our main engine. No one can say what they would do in a situation until they are there, and for most, they will never get to experience a crossing first hand. Z and I have completed many crossings, and we think we know a fair amount regarding cruising Aquarius around the world. We have made it well over 1/2 way around. Cruising, is not just sailing, not just making crossings, not just getting to your destination, not just sitting on anchor off a postcard beach. It's everything you experience while unplugged from mainstream LIFE. I hope you get to experience whatever you're missing in life! Ken

    Wow, what a long slog that was. I have followed your channel for many years and I'm happy to see you out sailing again, or even motoring across the Indian Ocean. It doesn't matter, you provide really great content.
    I think both of you look more healthy now than you did when you first started this channel. And I suspect it is because of Z's cooking.
    So it would be great to have a little more insight on how you eat, what foods are you choosing and how you are keeping them fresh, especially during passages.
    I think there's a lot of viewers who would be very interested in knowing more about this aspect of boat life.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад +3

      Yes, I have also noticed in the videos that we look a bit more healthy. But, Z is always young and healthy, and yes she creates great salads. But, recently I changed the way I eat, especially on passage. On a 10 day passage I will eat nuts, fresh fruits, and veggies for the first 3 days and try to keep all food intake between 3PM and 6PM. A three hour eating window. Day 4, 5, and 6, no food. This will be a three to four day fast. Then, 2 days I eat Pasta, Pizza, maybe some Thai Curry with rice, etc.... But, still keeping the eating window from 3PM to 6PM. Day 9 I fast, and Day 10 I arrive and eat what ever I desire.... EXCEPT I alway TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM SURGAR. But, I am not a food Nazi... So, every now and then... I do eat bad food...
      So.... How you look... 80% what you eat, 20% how you work out...
      Food intake - 50% what you eat 50% when you eat.
      That is my latest thoughts on food! I think we will do a video about this...
      Best, Ken

    How do you run out of fuel on a sail boat ? A well oil crew will let you down less often than an internal combustion engine ! Always try to avoid the use of the auxiliary power , and make it a practice of sailing your boat not driving your boat.

      The are great safe yachts . But to many systems to break and the sail plan is pretty much set for owners . A cutter rig sloop with no electric winches will serve true sailors . I have seen over weight Americans get off Amels having never left the cockpit or manually trim sails . Probably That’s why they motor everywhere. Good boats for sure but better choices out there to catch the wind

    They are fishermen,they were close to Zatara and also did a food swop with Nahoa.Not sure what the pirates are up to these days.They will know sailing vessels are not allowed to carry fire arms because certain ports/countries have very strict gun laws.Somali Pirates also watch You Tube so they know you are easy targets.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад

      Most of the stuff you hear about guns on boats, just ain't true. We had guns for 1/2 our voyage.. There are regulations everywhere, but you ain't going to jail just because you have a weapon or two, or three. But, it is a pain in the ass to check them in and out every time you check into, or out of, a country.

    forgive me but i missed it , why were the fluids changed . ENJOY THIS ,118K PEOPLE WISH THEY WERE WITH YOU..my wife went swimming for 30 mins in the Indian ocean at Dar-es-Salom , and was fried for two weeks , how do you , and everyone else on sailing videos keep from getting burnt to a crisp from the sun ? are the fishing boats trying to chase you off their fishing area ? or what ? thanks for what i think are the best sailing videos on you tube

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад +1

      We are going to be in Tanzania in a few weeks... Should be nice!
      The oil and transmission fluid need to be changed every 200 hours. Doesn't matter where you are... Maintenance has to be done... Like driving a car across the US... When you get to 10K miles you stop in for an oil change... (or what ever your warranty papers say for the Oil Change on you particular engine). So, it's the same for a boat.
      First, I don't use sun cream - Since I don't know what's in it, I am not putting it on my skin. If I feel I am starting to get burnt, I cover up with a shirt, hat, a towel, what ever I can find. But, I try not to stay in the direct sun for too long.
      Fishing boats - They want to get Alcohol and Cigs... And they want to trade fish.... They don't care about you in their fishing area, they may care if they have long lines that are floating on the surface. If so, the fishing boat just want to tell you where they are so you don't hit them. But, you don't know who they are, or what they want when they are coming at you. So, I just want to keep my distance.
      Thanks for the nice comment, and please keep watching our videos! Like, share, and get your friends to subscribe!! Fair Winds - Ken

    They might had a problem and needed help? Pirates seldomly have a AIS turned on .
    On the other hand they did not hailed you but that maybe was part of their problem.

    • @SailingAquarius

      No, they do not board boats, they come close and bag for booze and cigs... BUT, lets say you gave one some Alcohol ....... They would tell all their friends, and every Fishing boat would be chasing you down for some... Like giving candy to kids.... Give candy to one, and you're surrounded by 50. Bottom line, I try to stay away from everyone at sea. Ken

    Why would one do oil change in the middle of an ocean passage, good risk management says do that stuff before you leave, even if it’s not quite due. Never know what could go wrong 🤦‍♂️

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад

      Most experienced sailors I know have done an oil change during a passage...... After 200 hours, you should do an oil change. If you motor 240 hours during a passage, you would have to do an oil change. You tell me what could go wrong during an Oil Change?

      Not really. We were just about ready to take off with only 100lt on the deck, but when we heard that fuel was 2X the price in the Seychelles we bought 100 more for the deck in the Maldives. I am so happy that we increased our fuel on the deck! That was the first time we ever had a problem with fuel. Most of the time we would arrive with at least 1/2 the tank. But, we might think about it in the future...

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Год назад +1

      With 600 Lt in the tank and 250Lt on deck. 850/3.8 = 223 hours or just under 10 days at 1800 RPM. At this RPM in smooth windless conditions you would go about 6 kts which would be about 223 x 6 = 1338 nautical miles. But, that all could change with the weather.. Current plays a roll, and with a 15kts wind on the nose, and some waves your range could end up be less than 600 nautical miles. Sometimes you just can not make your destination, so you find a new one.
