I used to live up the road from there in Tilehurst. We used to go on trips by train all the time!

Sorry but from what ive seen here on youtube that hardly seems to be the case. Many probably just shoot video or pics of them because there is nothing else left. Im not from the UK but i definetly dont love MTU, before i visited i didnt care much for UK trains, i probably would have returned the same way if i had only seen MTUs, the turbocharged scream of the Valenta's is what hooked me instantly, i doubt a visitor now would feel the same about a MTU.

And since when has the future been a good thing for the rail enthusiast? Steam to Diesel, loco to DMU, the basic principle of ETTS,everything turns to shit.MTU may be the future of HSTs but how many people are honestly going to give a damn about them now? The HST was one of the last good thing on British rails and MTU has ruined it.I would have love to visit york and bash the 225s and the GC HSTs but im afraid im many miles away in the US at the moment and wont be visiting the UK anytime soon:(

The Paxman `Valenta' was very vocal but in these pollution aware times they produced too much lubrication oil smoke in particular. The Paxman VP185 was a great improvement oil contol wise and this engine replaced all Valentas in 2000 on the Australian XPT (the XPT is based on the IC125 but the power cars are modified extensively for Aussie conditions, including steeper gradients - see `XPT by COMENG' (3 videos) here on YT if interested). Funnily enough the VP185 sounds alot better when installed in the XPT (link below).
The MTU may not be popular due to the relatively refined noise they make and for the lack of `clag' but, being `state of the art' Diesel, they helped the IC125 survive well into the 21st century. I understand that a `soft start' control system was included when the Class 43 was re-engineered by Brush, hence the slightly more leisurely scceleration from a stand.
MTU is a German company but was presumably considered so good that it is now part of Rolls Royce Power Systems, a welcome change from British companies being bought by foreign companies.

Are you kidding? The new MTU engines are the biggest pieces of shit ever to ride the rails, sound like as Dillon said microwaves and have horrid acceleration which really counts on the GWML.The refurbed coaches have terrible hardback airline style seats and in addition the neon scheme looks like crap. The reason that Dillon is getting a bad impression of UK trains is because now honestly modern UK stuff sounds pretty crappy, unless he has a Valenta powered microwave, in which case im stealing it!
