  • Filmed throughout 2023. One of the biggest train operators in the UK but in the North is train operator, Northern. Since Arriva lost their recent franchise since 2020, Northern is now managed by the government which their fleet has undergone a major refurbishment plan over the years but some of the oldest are due for withdrawal.
    Class 150: The class 150 was built by British Rail Engineering at York Carriage Sidings between 1984 and 1987 with a total of 137 being built. Originally worked for Regional Railways throughout the UK rails on both express and branch lines. These units are separated into 3 class of units; Class 150/0, 150/1 & 150/2. The class 150/0 is known as prototype units which consists of 3 carriages. These units were tested along the Midland Mainline between Derby and London ST Pancras. In April of 2020, ex GWR class 150/0 no. 150001, 150002 & 150003 transferred across to Manchester to begin a new life with Northern. The class 150/1's similar appearances to the 150/0 has 2 carriages but with no access gangways between 2 units if they were coupled together. The class 150/2 have modified cabs to be fitted with access between the units if coupled to a sister class. They have a maximum permitted speed of 75 MPH.
    Class 155: The class 155 Sprinters were built by Leyland Bus in Workington between 1987 & 1988. A total of 47 of these units has been built. However, 35 of the units were converted into the single carriage class 153 Sprinters to replace the first generation Bubble Cars. The remaining 7 units are currently still in working operation working for Northern trains across the East Riding. They can take a total of 160 passengers seating.
    Class 156: The class 156 Super Sprinters were built Metro-Cammell's Washword Heath between 1987 & 1989 with a total of 114 of these units being built. During the 1980's, the First Generation DMU's were becoming rather dated and even suffered from rotten wood in the interior. These units not only took over from them as well as local hauled trains.
    Class 158: The class 158 Express Diesel Multiple units was built at British Rail Engineering Limited at Derby Litchurch Lane Works between 1989 & 1992 and a total of 171 in service. When these units were built, majority of these units were built as 2 carriage units but few were converted into 3 carriage units. Their sleek new design was a step up to the second generation of DMU's. The interior has been fitted with carpets, spacious seating and even air conditioning which these units.
    Class 170: The class 170 Turbostar units was built by Adtranz and later by Bombardier Transportation at Derby Litchurch Lane Works and built between 1998 and 1999 with the first of these units being introduced on 30th May 1999. Northern has taken a total of 16 of former ScotRail class 170 Turbostar units in 2017 which made their introduction into service in 2018 along the Harrogate Loop to replace the now retired Pacer fleet. In May 2019 and on the first day of the major timetable changes, Northern introduced these units onto the Scarborough.
    Class 195: The newest of the DMU's for Northern is the long overdue class 195's which were built CAF owned by Eversholt Rail Group. A total of 58 of these units has been built with 25 two carriage sets and 33 three carriage units. The first of these units went into service on 1st July 2019 between Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Airport via Warrington Central.
    Class 319: The class 319's was built by British Rail Engineering Limited Holgate Road Carriage Works between 1987 & 1990 with a total of 86 of these units being built. The units worked mostly between Bedford to South London and beyond to Brighton. In 2015, Northern took on 20 former Thameslink/First Capital Connect class 319's to work in the North West region in Merseyside.
    Class 323: The class 323 units was built by Hunslet Transportation Project with prototypes built between 1992 and 1991 with a total of 43 of these units being built. A total of 18 of these units were destined for Northern and operating in the Manchester/Merseyside areas. The future will see former West Midlands Railway class 323 units to join Northern.
    Class 331: The class 331's were built by CAF owned by Eversholt Rail Group with a total of 43 of these units being built with 31 three carriage units and 12 four carriage units.
    Class 333: The class 333's were built by Siemens Transportation System with a total of 16 of these units being built. They entered service in 2001 with the remaining in 2003.

    Fantastic video Ricky
    I was on 150104 and it broke down on the Preston viaduct. Hope you're doing ok

      Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear your train broke down. I hope the train manage to get moving again. I was on board 150205 between Halifax and Huddersfield and the rear engine kept on stalling. So, the driver had to keep on resetting the engine but it still stalled.
