  • Back to a July day now in 1991, at Oxford which then was then a hotbed of activity with loco hauled trains. We see InterCity and freight along with first generation DMU's. The passenger workings were hauled by clas 47s while we see a 37 and a couple of 58s on freight, in those days Didcot A Power Station still recieved its coal from UK pits and at least once an hour an MGR train would head towards Didcot while the preceeding one would head back north. That changed to imported coal via Avonmouth late on in the 1990s until Didcot A closed in 2013. The DMU's were working the local services on the Reading-Didcot-Babury route. Nicely caught with the “wrong road” departure northbound from platform 1 at around 8:30.

Yes, i didn't see that move often. A late running arrival in platform 1 for an Oxford terminator was more common, there was one later on this day, you'll notice no NSE Expresses, i think they had been a disruption somewhere as two turned up in rapid succession, the forst went straight to P1 for a quick turnaround back to London....

Love that there was still a mk1 buffet in blue and grey still operating with Intercity into the 90's. Great footage as always Soi.

Cross Country Inter-City services always had the hand me down stock (along with the Norwich route), the main lines had the newest stock.

By the 1990s, the wide variety of loco haulage seems to have been reduced to mostly class 47 in many places, with sprinters having "stolen" a lot of ex hauled stock workings, but at least their was more variety on freight workings than what seems to be on offer today

Oford was good for freight and passenger locos, especially on my 1988 Oxford upload here ruclips.net/video/eeO1otSc3eQ/видео.html

There should have been an NSE express as well but they had been delayed, and a couple turned up later one behind the other.....will be on a future upload....

A Hoover would often lay over in the bay on Friday nights in 1989 to take the parcels extra on to Worcester on Saturday morning. Such was the case after their passenger turns on the route finished. 50020 and 50036 were regulars.

Interesting to see an Intercity service not stopping at Oxford, they didn’t last long into the 1990s. I think one example was non stop from Birmingham New Street to Southampton in the summer.

It probably was ECS although another viewer thought there was a non stop train than ran brief around this time.
