Dr Westman is the only one I trust regarding keto. I started out doing keto 3 years ago at age 70. Was strict, but ended up in Emerg, because of rapid heartbeats. I was fine, but have since worked at listening to my body, and modifying my intake. I try to keep under 50g carbs a day. I have put back on about 8 pounds but feel good. At 73, I'm pain and meds-free, and climb the 8 flights of steps to my apartment. I'm good with that.
10 years ago I needed to lose 35 lbs. I didn't know about keto & followed Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint and his carbohydrate curve (which sounds very much like what you described in the video). I kept carbs to 50-60g and lost the weight. I'm not diabetic and lost 15 lbs recently on keto that I had regained the past few years, but then I stalled. I was so stressed over counting carbs and not straying from page 4 that I wasn't enjoying eating, cooking, etc. I loosened up a bit and allowed myself half a sweet potato, or some nuts, or even a bit of chocolate! I still lost a couple pounds but felt so much better because I let go of trying to stick to 20g. I think the stress surrounding everything I ate was causing me more problems than I realized. A more flexible, relaxed approach works better for me. So glad you've got this range of carbs in your new book!
Query: I’ve been at goal maintenance since 4/2017 still continuing 20 less in gram. Wouldn’t it stand to reason if I increased carbs to 30 I would gain weight? I know, if I would gain to back down carbs. It scares me to gain more than three pounds. My weight never fluctuates more than three or down more than two. I do miss eating more carbs but fear interrupting good health well-being RA Addison’s osteoporosis and my happy weight.
Some folks may never be able to increase their carbs without a negative result. It’s best to test this out slowly by adding only a few carbs back each week. This will help you identify what is right for you 😊
I think the missing point the addiction model. Those that are addicted to carbs-and sadly most are. What these people can metabolically handle is irrelevant . It's like limiting an alcoholic to 2 drinks a week, this will not work. A determination between a social user, a harmful user or an addict must me made. For an addict, the goal should be no carbohydrates because they will never be able to stay at a lower level once they begin a reduction model.
Naltrexone, according to Dr. Ken D. Berry, will eliminate Carb Cravings, just like alcohol cravings. Personally, I'm a Carnivore and need Strawberries to help clear my Kidneys of BUN, a byproduct of the breakdown of proteins. So, a handful each week or so does that trick. I stay under 30 gross carbs a day, and feel no pain in my joints.
I think it’s an art to determine the level you can tolerate. My physical activity varies from day to to day. I also fast 36 hr once a week . It would be interesting to know if you can tolerate a birthday party cake or a one off carb meal once a week. Would an HB1c test indicate tolerance? Or simply does your appetite increase?
Yes, but these are limited because all vegetables still include carbs. Dr. Westman has a Keto made simple Masterclass that has just launched and will be available again in January If you would like to learn more, subscribe at www.adaptyourlifeacademy.com
Are you talking about net carbs or total carbs? I’m having a hard time staying in ketosis but I am somewhere between 22 - 27 net carbs. Also, I’ve been doing ADF 24 hrs 3 days a week....
I had an ablation done on my heart over 5 years ago, I had A-Fib . All has been well until the last couple of weeks and I have been feeling it again. Do you think that the Keto/Carnivore has effected this??
This happened to me, too. I'm on thyroid medication and keto/carnivore made it so I needed the dosage decreased. Once that was adjusted, the heart issues stopped. I had ablation surgery in the past and I was worried that it was this.
It's all about choice and personal preference and which science is real and which is fake. Low carb has many benefits for most people. Some people cannot do it for one reason or another. But again, it's about choice. There are indisputable facts that sugar and starchy vegetables are not good for anyone. All cereals contain sugar and should be avoided. Fruits contain fructose and should be avoided, IMHO.
Your body does indeed “not need carbohydrates” however there are reasons one would add carbs to their diet, 1. Many folks won’t stick to a diet with a restriction of 20g or less. In this case, it’s better to have slightly more carbs and stay on a low carb diet, not necessary Keto. It’s better for someone to have say 30-50g of carbs than the typical 300 or more carbs per day. 2. For exercise performance, sports that require more explosive movements favor glycogen to fat as the preferred fuel. For ultra endurance athletes, fat is the preferred fuel. 3. Lastly some folks are not negatively effected by carbs and folks enjoy eating them. For these folks, it’s ok, and once again, we suggest limiting them (still a low carb diet) so that it’s sustainable for these folks long term.
Aren't potatoes carbs , & the most of rest of them is bread & stuff !'y we getting heavy from it ? Veggies don't make us fat , meat either , has to be the bread stuff , u know! 💝🍩🍔🍟🍿🥮 !
U noticed how heavy potatoes are, if u mash them up u eat more , if u don't, 2 or 3 potatoes med to sm is enough with veggies to fill u up ! & feed everyone in there, don't mash them up ok , 🥔

I’m 74 and found Keto to take off prednisone weight to treat my paralysis which was gone after 3 1/2 months. Good for you, Elizabeth!

Thank you for sharing 😊
I recognize the stress of counting carbs. Didn’t enjoy keto at all. Thank you for sharing your story.
There are so many great cooks sharing their experiemnts on YT - Serious Keto is just one example. And, sometimes its easier to just not eat ANY carbs.
Thank you Dr. Westman for making the keto diet easy & practical!! May your tribe increase!!
Thank you Maria.
Thanks!!

Oh, you're sooo boring and self-righteous!

This is true

An HbA1c would not be a good indicator, you would need to try and see if this would effect you over time.
Should we include net carbs of green vegetables??
Yes, but these are limited because all vegetables still include carbs.

Hello from GA
Do these carbohydrates include carbs from vegetables ) non starchy), like spinach, broccoli?
Yes, carbs are all turned into glucose. It’s just that some foods have less carbs than others.
Will your book be available on audible?
Typically once the book has launched, it then comes out on audio 😊
Hi from Florida!
I guess I need the book because no info about how you know which group you belongs to.
Are you talking about net carbs or total carbs? I’m having a hard time staying in ketosis but I am somewhere between 22 - 27 net carbs. Also, I’ve been doing ADF 24 hrs 3 days a week....
We always talk about Total carbs. Using Net carbs is very difficult to get into ketosis.
I’ll there be a kindle edition ? Thank you
We hoping after the book launches.
Hi my limit is 35 grams then I start to put on weight if i stay at 1200 calories I can have more
What 1st
I had an ablation done on my heart over 5 years ago, I had A-Fib . All has been well until the last couple of weeks and I have been feeling it again. Do you think that the Keto/Carnivore has effected this??
You need more magnesium in your diet. Just make sure your supplement is not magnesium oxide.
This happened to me, too. I'm on thyroid medication and keto/carnivore made it so I needed the dosage decreased. Once that was adjusted, the heart issues stopped. I had ablation surgery in the past and I was worried that it was this.
Why does page 4 cost $10?
Dr. Westman uses the money to go back into research.

I lost 25 pounds the 4 pounds in one month so not sure I will lose any more
I though our body does not need carbohydrate , the lower is the better
Your body does indeed “not need carbohydrates” however there are reasons one would add carbs to their diet,

The answer is ZERO! There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. But try and keep it under 30 grams per day.
