  • Specific details about the longest air-to-air shots in history haven't been publicly disclosed in official news sources. Military organizations typically keep such information classified for operational security reasons. While occasional reports surface regarding successful engagements or missile tests, they often lack specific details such as the exact distance of the shot. Despite the challenges in accessing classified data, occasional glimpses into these feats emerge through unofficial channels, such as claims from various sources. While these accounts lack the precision and verification of official disclosures, they offer intriguing insights into the capabilities of modern aerial warfare. In this exploration, we delve into the 7 longest air-to-air shots in history, pieced together from fragments of information gleaned from diverse sources.

    Actually the longest-range kill is a USAF F-15, flying at 11.6km / 7.2 mi altitude, which destroyed the Solwind P-78 satellite at an altitude of 555 km / 345 mi. So the distance is _at least_ 543.4 km / 337.8 mi.

      The video doesn't claim "longest range kill" (which is likely by ballistic / cruise missiles if we're talking all missiles) but only "air-to-air" kills. Some non-military missiles have successfully hit the moon / comets / asteroids. And yes those were air launched because they were carried by multi-stage rockets. The upper stages are launched mid-air from the stage below.

      @@BC-wj8fx What a bunch of nonsense. No air-launched projectile has ever gone beyond low-Earth orbit, the only ones to do that were all ground-launched. And besides that, we've never been able to "kill" a comet or asteroid, let alone the Moon.

    The previous longest range air-to-air kill within USAF/USN records is 132 miles (210km) with AIM-54 Phoenix in the 1970s. Them achieving a new record puts the latest AIM-120D3 on par with Meteor or even PL-15 in terms of range.

    • @BiasThunderz
      @BiasThunderz 9 дней назад +1

      That's questionable, The longest AIM-54 Phoenix missile kill recorded was during Operation Preying Mantis on April 18, 1988, when an Iranian F-14A Tomcat fired an AIM-54C Phoenix missile at an Iranian modified Knox-class frigate, which was approximately 68 nautical miles (about 126 kilometres) away, add to that the fact the AN/AWG-9 (which the f14 would be equipped with in the 1970s) could only reliably detect targets at around 115nmi and track at 80nmi according to "Rare Footage Of The Aim-54 Phoenix Missile And F-111 Aardvark Development Program", makes this claim highly unlikely, the AIM-54 battery could also only last 160s, so the missiles would likely not reach its target in the atmosphere or if it maneuverer.

      @@johnsilver9338 I went over the combat report and I seems I have made a mistake, the AIM-54 destroyed not the ship but a drone launched from the ship, and to answer the AIM-54 as an ASM question, yes it is possible and it has been tested, as the F-14 radar uses and objects speed relative to the radar to filter out ground clutter, it can lock on to moving ground targets such as ships and tanks, the AIM-54 was tested against various target types and was of little use against armoured targets BUT could easily set fires to ships and light armoured personnel carriers, once again apologies for the miswording in my previous comment

    Hm ,almost all given data are wrong.First ever AAM launches against enemy fighters flying in the front hemisphere( BVR combat) was in the US-Vietnam war with AIM-7E Sparrow using by USAF interceptors.Launch distances were 10-20kms max but without any success.Then in 1971 IAF with its fighter-interceptors got chance to engage high and fast flying recce Soviet AF MiG-25R/RB flying from Kairo West over Sinai and Dimona israeli nuclear reactor.Launch distances of AIM-7E Sparow were also 10-20kms but without any success .10 years later on Feb 13 1981 IAF F-15A achieved then longest air to air shot ,shoting down SyAAF MiG-25PDE from the distance of 25kms and using AIM-7F Sparrow. One year later in 1982 Lebanon war ,one IAF F-15A shot down one (not two) SyAAF light tactical bomber Su-22 ( not MiG-23) from almost 40kms away.During Iraq-Iran war ,longest air to air shot was achieved by IRIAF F-14A when one crew engaged IrAF Su-22 light tactical bomber from about 100kms away. During the first gulf war in fact ,longest air to air shot was achieved by famous IrAF MiG-25PDE pilot lt. Zuhair Dawood who shot down USMC F/A-18C ( pilot M.Speicher was KIA) on Jan. 17 1991 with R-40RD1 launched from the distance of 30kms. On Jan 6 1999 two IrAF MiG-25PDE were engaged by USAF and USN fighters F-15C and F-14D using AIM-7M ,AIM-120C4 and AIM-54Ccombined and launched from about 50kms but without any success.
    During Ethiopan-Eritrean war in 1999, exactly on Feb. 21 one Ethiopian AF Su-27SK achieved air to air shot from almost 50kms against Eritrean MiG-29B with AAM type R-27ER1. During NATO campaign against FRY in 1999 longest air to air engagement against YuAF MiG-29B was 15-20 nmi ,longest air to air shot was achieved by USAF F-15C pilot ltcol Rico C. Rodriguez on the night of March 24 1999 with almost 20nmi of launch distance against one MiG-29B flying over Kosovo province. On March 5 2022 two RuA&SF Su-35S engaged a group of four Ukr AF Su-27S with new AAM type R-77-1 that were launched from 60 and 80kms ,shoting down all four Su-27S near the city of Zhytomir. Then on Oct 12 2022 was achieved longest ever recorded combat air to air shot from the distance of exactly 217 kms ( launch distance) when one Ukr AF tactical recce aircraft type Su-24MR was shot down by new heavy very long range hypersonic AAM type R-37M launched from MiG-31BM. On Dec 16 2023 RuA&SF MiG-31BM shot down one Ukr AF MiG-29 also with R-37M launched from the distance of 125 kms.
    Note : that story about so called ''F-15 Eagle Scores “Longest Known” Air-To-Air Missile Shot During U.S. Air Force Test ' 'is fake beacuse it is not possible to achieve 'longest known AAM shot ' with only 170kgs heavy AAM! The real max possible authorised launch distance against bigger incoming air target with AIM-120D is no more then 50nmi or no more then 100kms. In fact ,longest ever recorded air to air launch distance ( shot with one AAM ) was achieved on April 1994 with 600kgs heavy hypersonic very long range AAM type K-37( test version of the AAM known as Product 610) and launched from the prototype MiG-31M number 057 blue against one RC-target .Launch distance was exactly 304kms.

    Actually in test run the Iranian made Fakour-90 LRAAM fired from a IRIAF F-14 hit a target at a range of 150km. The Fakour-90 is the Iranian version of AIM-54 Phoenix. Also one of the and if not the longest ranging air-launch missile in the world is dome on test run by Iran via Iranian air-launched version of Fattah hypersonic cruise missiles launched via an Iranian SU-24 hitting a target on land some 2000KM away. It was test run for Iran to hit Israeli or NATO and US targets in any future war from the safety of Iranian air-space. Also IRGCAF has its own 1500km long air-launched cruise missile via modified and upgraded SU-22 that can target Israel or entire middle east from Iranian air-space.

It has been into a direct fight with any American or NATO planes such as F-15,18,22,35, Gripen , Eurofighter, Rafale, Mirage etc. , also never ever a Su-57 has been shot down over Ukraine by Patriot because if Ukrainians can shoot down IL-76 with Patriot over Azov Sea then they should have shot down an Su-57 when they were deployed in war to launch X-69 missile, which tells that it has stealth power and Patriot cannot get a lock on it. Su-57 has 3D thrust vectoring which is good for dogfight, it can carry R-37M hypersonic air to air missiles which have a higher range. Su-57 is still in developing phase and they are yet to produce Su-57M with advanced tech, so many reasons why it is not correct to judge Su-57 just because it has exposed screws all over and it's engines are exposed, and one more important thing Russians are not stupid you know they are fast learners, so let them learn and wait.

    • @ArizonaAstraLLC
      @ArizonaAstraLLC 21 день назад +3

      One thing is what you're saying, the other thing is reality. It is well documented that Iran used their F-14's to immense success during the Iran-Iraq War. Yes, spares and external support was cut off in 1979. Their maintenance crews and air crews trained side-by-side USN crews and a contingent of Grumman employees lived in Tehran for working on F-14's. As the war progressed, it became increasingly difficult to use them because they had to cannibalize their 79 aircraft (the amount lowered as several were lost in combat) for spare parts, and ration the long-range AIM-54 missiles and used the American Hawk SAM as a working, albeit not as effective replacement.
      Nonetheless, the F-14 fleet remained a critical component of Iranian tactical air power and is widely accepted to be the most dominant fighter aircraft of the war, and is a pioneer of BVR air combat becoming the norm.
      Again, hate Iran all you want, but these are facts about their objectively high competency and success with their F-14's (very widely accepted as having over 100 air-to-air kills during the Iran-Iraq War, many sources claim over 160), especially after their parts inventory dwindled 1-2 years after shipments stopped arriving from the the USA.

Just the same hype as the "unstoppable" Kinjal misilles or the "advanced" Armata tanks. Su-57 can be good, but Russia is not able to produce it in necessary amounts. And what is interesting, two planes were lost for accidents - almost 10% losses without entering real war service...

      Exactly. Thats why Su-57 was not not even near Ukraine air defenses.

      You know nothing probably.
      250 modified FAB-500's were dropped on Avdiivka. Those are gliding bombs dropped from 40-45km.
      Most Russian planes were intercepted near Crimea.
      Ukraine tried to deployed rhe Patriot near the frontlines. Both of the batteries got destroyed.
      Now the R77-1 have 110km of range.
      And if they deploy the FoxHound(Mig31) that thing even can use an R37 with 200km range.
      You can do the math

      There are plenty of videos of the SU-57 flying inside Ukraine on the Internet. You might want to check your information and do a little more research. And the long range shot was from inside Belarusian air space.
