Real Talk with RAYE - album My 21 Century Blues, Ice Cream Man, Escapism, exposing music industry

- Singer/songwriter Raye came in for a Lowkey Deep interview on the 18th of October. I was definitely overrunning my time slot with her, just because what she had to say was crazy interesting! She told me, for example, how her label massively screwed her over, forcing her to work for other artists instead of her own, about the unfair treatment of mostly female vocalists in the dance industry, and her journey of finally setting herself free to create her very first album, My 21 Century Blues, after working in the music industry for over 10 years.

She needs to write a book on the music industry
Word!
as a singer, why write a book when you can write and sing an album
@@goldenretriever5140 I definitely get what you’re saying, and she definitely achieved that already with this new album. I just want a Raye memoir/autobiography at this point, but if her independent discography ends up doing that to the full extent that’s even better!
There are many books already out there about this topic
She needs to do the theme song for the next Bond movie. Who’s with me?
Yes!
when she stopped making songs just to sell shes getting her first global hit as lead artist and one of the best songs I ever heard, she deserves this success. I loved this interview, a lot of really good questions
Thank you so much Antonio 🥹🫶🏽
fuck yes. new icon. artists like her and Rina are the future. so happy to see these women be unapologetic and disruptive.
✨YAAAAASSSS ✨
@@lowkeydeep f the labels!!!
The girl is just real. Spits lyrics that just seem 2 be the soundtrack of my life. Can't get enough of her artistry. Get your money RAYE, you deserve it!!
After seeing interviewers ask: "How long can you go without your phone?", I'm so glad to see interviews like these still exist. I could listen to her all day.
You are the sweetest, thank you 🥰!!
it's so crazy to me that she was never considered talented enough to put an album out. i haven't been this excited for an artist to put out an album for a long time
Same over here - I was flabbergasted 😳!
The label didn’t think she was marketable which is so stupid. Akon/La Reid Dropped Lady Gaga before she became big. But she never gave up and someone else believed in her. Same will happen with Raye. When you let artists do their own thing. Magic happens.
She’s so intelligent, humble and down to earth
Best interview I’ve watched in a long time! I love RAYE and her new music, you done an amazing job with this interview too!
Oh nooo that is SO sweet of you, seriously! THANK YOU 🥹🫶🏽
Fantasy interview 🙌
Raye: “This industry makes you feel like you don’t have a choice. There are a lot of people and a lot of systems firmly “cemented” in place and can’t be altered”.
Not just the music industry, our whole monetary system fosters the same culture, takes away the savings of hard working people and locks them into the rat race.
Congratulations on being rebellious in holding true to your principles and becoming independent.
Even if you don’t own any, you are a Bitcoiner 💪 The ultimate form of self-sovereignty and savings that can’t be taken away by any third party.
I bet if u made your album available for Bitcoin the Bitcoin community wd be all over it, especially given your personal journey.
Congratulations again and all the best!
she reminds me so much of amy winehouse honestly, her speaking voice, mannerisms its unreal
I can’t stop seeing any in her
She remind me so much of Amy Winehouse it’s crazy even when she speaks, she’s just gorgeous
I just Googled her because she reminded me of myself, turned out she’s a scorpio toooooo wtf. Love the interview, very genuine and pure😘
Thank you so much for your sweet word Amira 🥹
It all make sense now that the album is out . Much much support for this artist and thank you for sharing such a genuine and healthy conversation .
Right? For me as well! Thank you for watching and commenting 🥹🙏
such a brilliant interview, such a great open conversation. seriously hoping we can all support her as an artist going forward and the fights shes pushing for in the music industry. love her
Thank you Hannah, I’m really happy you like it 🥹💜
Love 'My 21st Century Blues'. Playing non stop for a while now. Very fresh and the production made me sit up and listen to it all. Good Raye almost burst onto the music scene although I know that's not strictly true. Xx Empath supreme .. .. ..
Her art is so great that I'd buy buy buy and buy again. Hard out here is such a great song. Even when the intention is not to sell per se, great song writing sells on its own :)
Such a wonderfully structured interview, filled with depth, humour and authenticity! Absolutely enjoyed every moment, excited to watch more & listen to the album ☺️
Thank you SO much Elle 🥹🤍
I listend to her songs Bet u wish and Flowers 8 years ago?!?!
This whole success is looong overdue and I am sooo exited it’s happening on her own terms now!
The Album is a masterpiece and it’s on repeat 🔁
Also: she got her heritage tattoed and I’ve never seen someone with a swiss flag on their arm. Love the representation 🇨🇭 proud swiss 🧀
Hahaha 🇨🇭🤘❤️
I really wish I'll meet Raye one day. She is a freaking angel.
She truly is 🥰
I’d LOVE to talk to her about her creative process, especially on Escapism, thoroughly. That song became big for a reason. She is incredible!
Oh gosh yes that would have been amazing. Unfortunately by the time the interview took place the song wasn’t out. But you can imagine how much of a cheerleader I was when I saw that she finally got the reach she deserves 🥹💥
I'm feeling the same way about Raye! She seems so fun yet so chill as well! Maybe we should create a podcast and maybe get her on it! Just an idea
@@dice6338 oh i would DIE to have a chance to talk to her, now that i’ve heard her whole album thoroughly. this woman is a genius.
@@dice6338 oh yeah! We could call it Lowkey Deep 😎
@@lowkeydeep 🤣🤣 Hell yeah
I love RAYE so much, so down to earth. And kind soul ❤
💯 % agree!!
30:16 that’s so unfair and disrespectful for her label to do her dirty like that
WORD!!! 😤👏🏽
seriously great interview. Confident, the right questions at the right times. You reveal Raye beyond 'RAYE'. Quietly impressive.
Thank you so much for your beautifully worded compliment. You really made me smile 🥹💛
This is the first of your videos I have seen, and I loved the way you interviewed Raye! She's so incredible and I'm so proud of her and excited for this new chapter of her career. She's released nothing but good music her entire career and it's so cool that her first independent releases are like, her best songs yet.
Thank you so much John for beeing so sweet 😳🤍 absolutely!! And especially with Escapism beeing such a success - she deserves everything 🚀
Underrated channel, underrated artist.
Amazing interview, loved it through and through!
You are the absolute sweetest 🥺 thank you so much for this 🫶🏽
I was working yesterday and listening to this and at some point after I check the subcount and I am like WTF
You definetly have a knack for this and both me and RAYE were vibing with you because you made her feel comfortable and you weren't too nosy. I sure do hope to see Charli XCX on your show as well because she is also one of the people who I feel would have some amazing stories to tell.
Keep up the good work and you earned yourself another sub with this interview. Hope to see more soon 🇧🇦❤️
@@thegloriouspyrocheems2277 Seriously - YOU MADE MY DAY! Sometimes there's this little nagging and negative voice in my head , telling me that this project won't be successful anyway, so why bother?! But comments like yours really help me stick to it. I'll for sure go back to it the next time I'm nervous right before an interview or feel insecure about the footage. THANK YOU!
Woah
This is the first RAYE interview I’m coming across and it blew me away - I loved every single question and hearing about the biz and hearing about an artist instead of surface level goss
Thank you so much for the interview what a great one
Get it you two 👏
Enjoy these 21st century blues 🤘🏼
Your comment just caused a huge smile on my face Chris - thank you so much for this 🥹❤️!!!

This was such a good interview, I love RAYE so much and her responses to the questions asked were very insightful. Cannot wait for the album!
Thank you Alex, I’m so happy you like it 🥰
RAYE really spells it out. Imagine being so close to a hit song and then its like "no" but you just move on to make a new song creation. She's awesome.
Raye, she is so amazing, love all about her ✨🫶
loved this interview!! one of my favorites ever
It makes me so happy that you like it - it holds a special place in my heart too 🥹🫰
Black mascara it's a song that i think everygirl on earth can relate to and its a piece of art
I 💯 agree 🥺🫰
I know it's risky to do and I understand why it doesn't happen, but I would love to see someone exposing all those fake, overhyped, memory stick, playback stars.
Brilliant interview. She is so precious In our industry!
This album is so amazing. Stuck in my brain for so many different reasons
This was a really great interview one of the best I've seen a longtime.. you asked all the right questions while keeping it light and respectful. I'm definitely going to be watching more of your Channel❤️
That is such a great compliment - Thank you so much dear 😳! If you liked this one I bet you’ll like the one that I’m sharing tonight with Jessie Reyez ☺️!!

@@lowkeydeep Gude Grüße aus Frankfurt am Main
Great interview ! Love the part about looking up the credits to your fav songs, I do that often. And guess who wrote one of my fav songs by Beyonce, "Bigger" ? Raye ✨
Nooooo waaaayyy 🤯 that is so cool!! Thank you dear 🫰
I’m gonna buy this album
Thank you for this. Subscribed!
Thank you for watching & the sub 🥰
Great interview! Love Raye !!
Thank you dear 🥰
you are an amazing interviewer!!!
Thank you Jenn 🥺🫰
Love the story telling in his music. It has feelings, I’m sure a lot of it comes from personal experiences . This album is very good, when hope was release I recall the feeling of excitement for what’s coming, to me it was the follow up to intro three but with a new beginning about to happen. However, listening to this interview it’s pretty clear nf struggles with being a perfectionist. It’s easy to listen to the music and think this probably comes natural but clearly it doesn’t, it take a lot of dedication and work.
Her voice 😍😍
amazing interviewer
Lowkey Deep you are too cute! This is my first time seeing your content and you had my in the first thirty seconds 💕 - new sub
No way 🥹❤️ you made my day dear!!! Thanks a bunch 🫶🏽
Very interesting interview 👍
Yeah right? That’s definitely an interview that impacted my perspective on the music industry!
She’s n amazing human
Hopefully the days of waiting to be “discovered” by a label are over. The investments, the over hype, the rules. With artists like Raye changing the idea that you don’t need anyone but yourself if your music is in your soul. Give it to the people on your terms and reap the rewards.
Love her and Rina Sawayama. Absolutely innovative artists.
Great questions!!!
Thank you dear 🥰
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10 -OY3AH!
3:37 Man her laugh is breathtaking Mashallah 🤦🏻♀️💕
😂🤗
What happens at 30 minutes it’s what happens to many artists in the music industry. Sometimes I do wonder why Normani or none of the fifth Harmony girls have released an album for the exception of Camila and you have to wonder why. But maybe this is what’s happening to them. Normani has released many successful songs. Sometimes the label would sign you just to keep you to write songs for their artists which in this case happened to RAYE. Which explains why she was locked in that contract for 7 years.
Oh wow I never thought about that. Interesting point 😳
My best Tune ever is flip a Switch. Wicked tune l really dont know how she sang that. Dope
I wish this had time stamps
Uuuh good point I‘ll try to fix that! Thanks for letting me know!!! 🙌🏽
This is the reason why a lot of talented artist quit the business because of the stress you get, you write a hundred songs and it seems nobody cares. I for one know thats why i stopped, at some point i had to pay my bills and i couldn't be starving for much more.
Yes, it's difficult but never give up. Stay independent 💪
She must be a Scorpio
Elaborate 🧐
She is ♏🦂
I disagree with the gender question, the industry dont care for men or women it is all about who the company can manipulate, thats it.
Amazing women never give up on your dreams
