I feel like what this talk was missing was a practical element of how we could test our DNA right now. For anyone curious on testing their DNA check out 23&Me. Getting a DNA kit sent out it to me now. Really looking forward to what I learn from it. EDIT: Got it. Yes it was definitely worth it. Found out some cool things about my heritage. It shows you a lot of data on heritage and even though I couldn't get my raw DNA interpreted by 23&Me because I live in Australia there's services you can use to interpret it like Promethease which tell you what you're predisposed to. Found out some very interesting things. Though the information is not of much use unless I do something about it. Great insights into who I am nonetheless.
Cescafied I won't know for months because the kit is still being sent to me. Then I have to send it back. (I live in Australia hence the shipping time)
This video is incredibly insightful. Medical advancements are created everyday it seems, but the ability to personally test DNA from your own home opens up the door to multiple possibilities. By furthering the livelihood of farmers through DNA testing of livestock and crops food production may be substantially increased. By doing so, not only will it contribute to lowering the cost for high quality food, but it could assist in decreasing the rate of citizens around the world that are forced to live on minimal amounts of food. Additionally, by introducing personal DNA testing into homes, it is highly likely that many serious diseases will be caught and identified much sooner in their course. By doing so, numerous lives could be saved through early detection. Finally, it is a great way to include everyone in the upkeep of their own health. Through personal DNA screening, individuals are able to self advocate by monitoring their own health, their family's health, and even the health of the food they eat. While it could potentially lead to problems, consisting of unequal benefits for those who are unable to afford these personal DNA machines and possibly incorrect screenings created by amateurs that could lead to doctor frustration, I believe that this is an excellent idea. The benefits that could be produced through the introduction of a personal DNA screening era are too incredible to ignore, therefore the screening should be highly advocated for.
I had to dislike, the video doesn't bring in any new information about personal DNA testing, like availability/pricing/generation evolution of products. Just what DNA editing can do, which we already know for a long time. This guy is just trying to advertise his company. That is also why he isn't talking about the dangers of such technology. Every technology can be used for good and bad.
DNA test can tell your origins for example: w% = region A x% = region B y% = region C This method being used to test origins of few race. Not 100% accurate but it pretty much. From the origins, it can tell which continent you from. It secure depend on place you do.
This could potentially be a great and useful tool for many reasons. However, this video did not touch on any of the downsides personal DNA machines could present. You were right when you said the DNA machines could do extraordinary things for health. We would have access to so much more information. Although, this machine could seriously infringe on other people's privacy. I feel that if this tool were to be implemented into every day, we would need to put some restrictions on its use. This technology should definitely be used in hospitals and clinics. However, do I think we are ready for it to be in our homes? No.. this device could be misused and it could interfere with the rights of others. As of right now, in order for police to obtain a DNA sample, they need permission from a court. If these machines were in people's homes, they would potentially have more power than the police in DNA testing. This is a great idea with extraordinary capabilities, however, we are not quite ready for this technology yet.
This talk is about nothing. Each person with IQ bigger than shoe size can imagine that dna analysse might be usefull. But he gave no specific information how it can be done.
All well in good that you can read DNA but the problem is, you don't know what it means. Yes we can read DNA faster than ever but our interpreting its significance is comparatively at a standstill.
i'm going to make dogs smarter! look up driving and reading dogs. it's silly to and not to give man's best friend something as cool as Prometheus flame.
How to start with kitchen genetics? I am just writing my chemistry bachelors-thesis but only had an introduction to biochemistry lecture. What is the best way to learn more?
It allows you to find and copy any place in your genome, in a process called PCR, and then visualize and analyze that piece of your DNA, using DNA electrophoresis. You could then mail that chunk of DNA to be sequenced (read).
I could only listen to this for less than 2 Minutes. First of all, no Philippines Pig farmer can afford such a shoebox. And second: Even if he knows that his pigs have the flu, what should he do about it. And yes, I know what I am talking about. I am a vet.
A lot of men will be doing "not the father" dances.
TED's content is starting to get better.
No not really. Still too many feminists and SJWs.
TED is past it's prime but once in a while have something worth watching.
Feta Cheezz You are wrong. there are no sjw and feminist

Alex Sandalis What types of things did you learn? Was it worth it?

did u get it? was it worth it..

Amazing, but this is for everyone*
*privileged enough to spend time and money on DNA
Old Account some insurance companies cover it.
MisterRabbitEars still most people can't afford a phone
some companies offer free cell phones and coverage, cell phones are almost a human right anymore with how important they are to modern life
Sug4rkane vai se foder!!!
Damn, this was a REALLY good talk.. good job TED.

10:42 Thats me!!! Me and my brother few years ago.
I can't believe particle accelerators are being kept by big wig PhD scientists. Everyone should have their own particle accelerator.
What an interesting talk.
Viruses have RNA or am i remembering something wrong?
SengirShowsU yes you are correct, however there are viruses that have DNA
Abdullah Almosawy Can you give an example?
Hepatitis B
Síndico_do_Rato Thanks
zigil virus
REALLY good talk

Satellites all around earth.................
After you take a DNA test and receive a detailed report, what else do they do with all that information? Is it secure?
DNA test can tell your origins for example:
w% = region A x% = region B y% = region C
This method being used to test origins of few race. Not 100% accurate but it pretty much.

he is pitching his company like a sales guy! BCG principle expected :)
Goodbye world of safe identity. Let's be the first step to read it and the next to mess with it. I mean what could go wrong right?
Street fighter
"Bigwig PHD scientists" lol
Just invented a new word - Scivangelism, Scivangelical
what if targeting DNA (that cause disease) was spreaded to environment ?
Are there devices that can sequence human dna and dont cost over a thousand bucks?
8:40 You're in Paris France and you use miles instead of kilometers?
Oh boy, I can't wait to see family as a social institution thriving when personal DNA testing become widespread and affordable.
so, what's he saying?
What is the price of that machine?
DNA is not a molecule tho
What an attractive video👌
Thought this was a stand up
I thought the title said "Personality DNA Testing". But this is still cool I guess haha
Like before I see
So amazing
wanna
good video

Only a fool would say there is no God. Look at the blueprint and you say there is no creator?
FU for calling me a fool…fool.
here come the religious atheist nuts
atheism is a lack of religion. you are the one who brought religion into this
+flahr1 If your god's existence is proven because science doesn't have explanations YET, then your god won't exist for long.
Yep, typical religious atheist response.
The closer you look the more complexity you see.
This guy
TALKS!
like William Shatner
WHY?!
does he talk
like the great
William Shatner?
This is really cool! What a future we live in!
Chavascal What about now?
Chavascal come on, you know what I mean.
Wow, this very profound!
A good talk.
Please adjust the microphone next time. It's too sensitive and the sound of smacking lips and gums made this hard to listen to.
That would be awesome!!!

This looks too good to be true. Does this thing for 990.00 USD actually allow me to read my entire DNA?
