Awesome and professional workmanship Lee, you are so much fun to watch, I am 79, and an old Hot Rodder form the 60's, and so appreciate what you are doing, I only wish you were around when I was building cars in the 60's. I now live in Washington state, and hope to maybe someday get to say hello personally. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your ideas.....AND Merry Christmas to you and your family....:-)

I'm learning a lot from your videos. I have a '48 Dodge Business Coupe, that is in need of an engine and after watching your videos I think a BBC is way too big for the area they being put into ...it makes them too hard to work on in the future IMO. Thanks for sharing this and your great problem solving!

Should of put a Mopar 440 pass car with a front sump engine in it. Sell the Chevy engine………….
Coulda done a lot of things. John wanted his 454, not a 440.

I try to label stuff so that someone who didn’t take it apart could put it back together

Good thinking placing that engine there. Pickups need as much weight back as they can get, especially with that heavier big block on the nose. This is a total transformation to the power and handling of this rig. There will be miles of smiles.
If the Fargo is a MOPAR shouldn't the transplant be a MOPAR.
There are no rules when building hot rods. The owner went with the 454 Chevy because he already had it
If you had notched the rack crossmember, how much do you think it would have been?
Also if you did that, could you have left the firewall alone without cutting it?
I weighed out the pros and cons of cutting the firewall vs cutting the crossmember and even making a new oil pan. The firewall seemed like the safest option for making sure it fit properly. With cutting the crossmember there was still a risk of having to trim the firewall

John doesn’t have a 460. He has a 454, so that’s what we used.
Use what you have .. has been my motto for years! Might be a little nose heavy, buts it's a hotrod, so learn its quirks and live with it!
I wonder what the weight difference would be between the original 6 and the 454? That old six was a hefty chunk of iron
engines probably not that much difference ...tranny might be lighter, new front suspension maybe lighter too @@LGKustoms
A friend has a 55 Fargo with a big block Chevy. Super fun. Brand loyalty of engine and trans is pointless.

Big block looks good in there. I have a 52 dodge panel I put ls with s10 frame under it. Did my grandads 51 dodge for my dad small block with s10. Firewalls had to be cut out and moved back. And agian looks good
Yeah, front axle is set waaay back on those. Placing a 454 into the cab could get toasty and so much weight forward of the axle = not so nimble and hard on front suspension. Lots room for a large radiator, tranny cooler and possible airco. Life is good 👍

We had this issue with a straight 6 Toyota engine and to overcome it we made the sump fit over and around the crossmember and we also changed the oil pickup location.
I did this on the Cummins in my 72 Ford. I considered it for this truck too. But when you weigh out the pros and cons, it’s 6:1 half dozen to the other

Customer wants 454 then that's what he gets he's paying the bills, would I do it? likely not but I'm the kind of guy that keeps a Ford in a Ford a GM in a Gm and a Mopar in a Mopar, I'm doing a Jeep and everyone says LS it...not a chance getting a built 360 AMC.

Nice work. That Big block Chevy is going to have some nice driving torque between gas stations. Those Fargo frame rails look very similar to my '41 Int'l PU. I used a welder series MII set up and a 350/350 turbo. Later I swapped the 350 for a 292 inline six and really like it. I don't blame your customer for using what he has. Shooting the money cannon at a project doesn't always work.
A dodge engine would be better. Everyone has a chebby, they are bellybuttons.
I dislike 6s. A small V8 is better.

Great work I am impressed and I too have been learning. One benefit to having the engine back in will make it handle better as the engine will be further back behind the front axle like newer car designs.
You gotta ask yourself how many cross members that came with the trick from factory ha two or three piece cross members

Ruined another Mopar! I bet you Chevy guys cry bloody murder if someone puts a Mopar engine in a Chevy. I saw a nice 78 Z28 Camaro at a carshow that the owner put a 292 Y block Ford with the 2bbl and the big truck trans. He did a really nice job- but you should have heard the Chevy guys crying, I told a couple of them thats what they deserve! How about Finnigans 55 Chevy, at the beginning he was asked-why the Hemi-his reply-to piss the Chevy people off!
This is similar to Finnigans 55, just the other end of the spectrum haha
Yes sir this is definitely a case of use what ya got. And when you get another firewall fabricated to suit the engine it will look factory. All of these vehicles that had an inline six do not look right when a V8 engine is installed unless they were manufactured to accept either a six or a V8. A custom firewall will do the trick. This will give this truck quite the sleeper identity.
Sorry but I would never cut a fire wall like that it’s looks bad AF … never cut a square hole to put in a round peg.. allways arch an cut a small rounded square for the Distributor… it’s jus more logicly. Right 😢

I've been involved in a few frame replacements ( rust is a huge deal due to road salt in my area ). We've taken to moving the entire front ( or rear ) axle assembly forearm or back to allow for oil pan issues ( steering rack, differentia,...) and then let a body shop deal with the wheel wells. It can work surprisingly well. Moving the centre of balance back on an old British car improved everything AND made front end work MUCH easier. Did you guys think about relocating the front crossmember ?
No, I wouldn’t want to move the crossmember. John wants his truck to look stock from the outside, and moving the crossmember would change the wheelbase. Relocating the wheel openings like you mentioned I think would be way more work than moving the firewall back, and would also involve having to repaint the front sheet metal.

Very nice. I first thought front pan but didn’t no they don’t do them? Not even racing pans. Now the domino effect. This leads to this then that leads to this. New prop now and will the rear take the new power plant? You always succeed in the end. Cheers thanks for sharing.

i would square cut the front of the sump of the pan where it goes straight up and down
I considered that too, but it wouldn’t be enough I don’t think and the firewall would still need to be cut. It’s more work to cut the oil pan and cut the firewall rather than just cutting the firewall

Wish you had zeeded the cross member to just clear the rack, then remove the top/rear segment from the cross member. Rotate the angle to fish plate the cross member with the just removed segment.
V8 S-10 swaps did this to dimple the right frame elevated step-up.
I think everything would have cleared at the second firewall trim?
I considered it, but I don’t think it would have been enough and would have required firewall trimming as well. It’s the same amount of work to make a little firewall or a big firewall. Modifying the crossmember and the firewall would be more labor.

Cutting the firewall and getting the engine weight further back is by far the best option. I like the idea of taking a break, have a cup of coffee and think about the options as you study the project. I am just collecting parts for my 1955 ford F100 project. I am installing a 1996 4.9 straight 6 with a M5R2 five speed manual. I have a donor truck and have the engine wiring harness and computer because I am planning on keeping the EFI. You inspire my project that it can be done. Keep up the good work.
Of course it can be done. All you need is a coffee pot and a grinder!
I put an inline 6 in a 53 F100 12 years ago. Fit great

It’s more or less the same as a Dodge. The same way a GMC and Chevrolet are basically the same

There is nothing wrong with putting a Chevy engine in , Chevy’s are easy to fix you can get parts anywhere, they last forever.there a reason moonshiner’s used GM engines

I was looking for an engine stand mounting bracket for a flathead V8 that uses the exhaust mounting locations. I couldn't find one in Canada, only the US. Knowing that you fabricate some parts for sale, I wondered if this is something you've made or would consider making and selling?
