The thing I love about the genocide route is that the game knows it can’t stop you with difficulty alone. Even Sans knows that. The only way the game can truly beat you is by convincing you to abort the genocide. The game gives you opportunity after opportunity to back out, and it’s quite literally only your own _determination_ as the player to see it through that keeps you going. The game chips away at your own determination by making you feel awful for the murders you commit and forcing you to endure the two hardest fights of the game. Undyne and Sans don’t win by killing you. They win by forcing you to give up. If you don’t have the determination to win, only then do you lose. In True Pacifist, your determination is what breaks the Barrier and unites the monsters and humans when no one else could. In Genocide, determination is what drives you to kill even the friends you had made before for the sake of winning. Determination isn’t inherently good or evil, it’s a double-edged sword, and it’s quite frankly the best integration of a theme into a piece of media that I’ve ever seen.
What makes the game even more meta is that depending on the player, the emotional guilt trip might not even work. Some players might not develop the same deep emotional connection as other players and the guilt tripping might even convince them to push on further, taking it as a challenge rather than a beg to stop. Some players might just see the pacifist and genocide routes as things to complete rather than actual stories trying to get you to feel things.
