If I may pitch in quickly to share some info we at Rank One Performance have about these throttle bodies:
The throttle body issue is present on more and more IS200s lately, supercharged, N/A, turbocharged - the induction type doesn't seem to matter much. The issue is one of the throttle motor bearings just behind its electromagnetic clutch. This bearing isn't well isolated from the brushes' dust and the dust, combined with the bearing grease act like cement, causing the bearing to seize almost completely. The throttle motor on IS200s is very oversized (probably due to tolerance reserve Toyota implemented because of the ETCS system being 1st gen) and it manages to overpower this seizure. So the bearing starts spinning in its seat in the clutch assembly, which is hardened steel and doesn't seem to wear out. This masks the problem by allowing the throttle to function, albeit at a higher motor current draw. Sometimes the bearing is only partially seized, allowing for small motor movements to happen without much resistance. All this combined effectively raises the current draw of the throttle motor throughout its operating range. And since the ECU has an overcurrent protection, this lowers the tolerance for any load spikes. So in sharp throttle applications when the motor tries to open the throttle as quickly as possible (the highest sharp load) the current draw may go over the predefined limit the ECU has and it just disables the motor electromagnetic clutch, causing almost no throttle response. This failsafe mode was by design to protect the ECU and its power circuit in case of throttle motor failure or mechanical jamming. This is why there's a mechanical end-stop, so the last 20% of the pedal travel can open the throttle mechanically in the event the throttle motor isn't operational.
Long story short this issue is almost inevitable on all IS200s at some point. Autos seem to suffer more from it, because the throttle in the autos moves much more due to the "driving style" of the ECU and the auto box. If the issue is present, but not yet detected (right at the limit, but still the ECU overcurrent protection doesn't get triggered), adding the supercharger kit may get it over the limit due to the added load of the bypass valve system. It's possible to lessen that effect with softer springs on the bypass valve and mechanical cable, but that leads to other issues (like the ones people have experienced with the TTE/Bemani kits). And using softer springs doesn't solve the underlying problem, but at best would only delay it somewhat.
The best scenario is to have a throttle body that's not worn out in that aspect, which is still what the majority of cases are. In case this problem presents itself, then possible courses of action are: replacing the throttle body with a good one or repairing the faulty one. The repair is fiddly, but possible - we've had great success in repairing throttle bodies suffering from this problem, and some were suffering badly (almost no option to drive a naturally aspirated stock car normally). Experimenting also isn't an issue, especially if a replacement throttle body is installed on the car and the faulty one is free to be experimented on.

It's so nice to see a "cold air intake" that supplies the engine with actual cold air. So many (most of the aftermarket, tbh) give you a pod filter with _maybe_ half a boxed enclosure that looks ok-ish...until you realise it's open on one side and on the top, and it isn't designed to seal against the bonnet anyway. Good to see it done right!
    Cheers, mate.

There is a way to mod the factory throttle. Remove one of the cogs between the motor and the throttle. And then add a dowl or screw to make it ack like a cable throttle.

look at the throttle body in a VW Corrado G60. there is a mechanical butterfly located on the bottom that closes as you push the throttle down, then mechanically opens when you let off, maybe you could customize your current TB with something similar instead of a boost valve. ???

The IS200's semi drive by wire throttle body is total junk. I remember spending weeks trying to work out how to modify it so that the electronics would still work the traction control and idle speed control, but allow me to get full throttle when I floored it in first, I never managed to get around the problem. I found that a Japanese company DID do a kit of parts that would have made it do exactly what I wanted, but by the time I'd started looking it had been out of production for several years.
I sold my track day peeped MK1 MX5 to buy my IS, and it annoys me that I moved from the the most fun car I've ever owned to the most disappointing car I've ever driven. The handling isn't that impressive despite having coilovers and a 4 wheel geometry check/setup done by the same specialist who made my MX5 stick to the road like glue, the engine's electronics make it feel lifeless at lower speeds, It uses a disproportionately large amount of fuel for the power it makes, and it doesn't give half the driver feedback my MX5 did even when that was totally standard. It just feels like the automotive equivalent of beige corduroy trousers !!!
I recently became so bored with my IS200 Sport that I went out and bought a MUCH more fun weekend car............. A MK6 2.0 TDi Golf !!!!!
Its gives a way stronger feeling of acceleration off the lights, Corners at least as good as the Lexus, Is almost as comfortable on long trips, does 40mpg all day (Opposed to the IS200's 21mpg), And here in the UK, it costs 30 (rather than 325) quid a year to put road tax on it !!!
It worries me that I'm finding this diesel shopping cart feels more fun to chuck about than the RWD, LSD equipped "Sports saloon" its replacing.

That's fair if speed is what your into but it is the cheapest way to drift.

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 4 года назад

@@SlyShot555 I'm not sure I'd agree that the IS200 IS particularly cheep to drift.
Back in the day I learnt to powerslide in my Ford Capris. I prefer the rear to break loose before the fronts wash out because this feels more natural to me. Because of this, when I had the geometry setup on the MX5 it was with slightly drift orientated settings. I have to say with it setup like that the MX5 was a mental car. it gripped like hell, But when you provoked it you could get the tail right out, but it was seriously controllable too. It wouldn't even get particularly unsettled when drifting over broken/bumpy tarmac. Original or tuning parts for that thing were cheap as chips as well.
The IS200 by comparison is a lot more expensive to track day prep. It cost me just over half as much to get the Drilled/grooved discs and decent pads all around for the MX5 compared to what I spent for the same brands of discs and pads on the IS. The IS has a japspeed stainless cat back exhaust that cost me around 250 quid, But the MX5's stainless cat back cost about £150. The MX5 had wheels with a 4x100 PCD and quite a small center bore. 4x100 wheels were fitted to shed loads of cars back in the day, So second hand ones can be got pretty cheaply, and because of the small diameter of the center spigit on the MX5's hubs you could adapt most of them easily with spigot rings , But 5x114.3 wheels on the IS200 aren't quite as common, And as the IS had a larger center spigot than most, AND quite a large offset for a RWD car, it's not got as many cheep second hand wheel options.
The MX5 is a smaller car with smaller wheels so it's always going to need less material and subsequently be cheaper to make an exhaust or brake discs, so if I was looking for a cheap yet competent drift car, I'd have to say I'd choose a Mk1 or 2 MX5 over an IS200 any day.
The only reason I sold the MX5 and got the IS was because I'm starting to show my age now. Lets just say that track day suspension and a lightweight car isn't a particularly good mix when you've got back problems. :(
The Golf isn't the sort of car I'd have even considered owning a couple of years back, But after test driving a shedload of cars in my price bracket, I think it was more fun to drive than 90% of the others, And out of the top 10% it had the added bonus of being one of the cheapest to tax.

You'd get a rust free is200 in England for 600 with mot , and weld the diff put Ebay coilovers in it and get a load of part worn tyres and standard Lexus wheels are very common. I'm not saying it's the best but its definitely cheap.

    • @Reman1975

@ChrisHallett83 Mines the bluemotion version, So it's got a little less power than your GTD (134 bhp or 100KW), It's still got a quite respectable 236 lb·ft (320 nm) of torque though, And with a £400 retune it would easily match your GT's 125kw, but with 380 nm....... Then again, For the same money yout GTD could have just shy of 200bhp (150kw) and a gearbox stressing 420 nm of torque !!!!!........ The "Sports saloon" IS200 on the other hand puts out less than 200 nm, And the same £400 would net you about another 5 to 10 BHP. O.o
