We will be building this fence in our front yard to close it in and make it safer for our 2-year-old, Gemma. Building a fence is a good DIY project and a great way to save a lot of money. We will be building this fence from scratch and making the best fence on a low budget.
    Check out the video to see how to build a wooden picket fence and to learn great money-saving tips for your fence projects.

    Kind of crazy, but this is one of very few videos on RUclips that covers how to make a traditional picket fence! I’ve been confused with how to go about making a smooth even run on an incline and your spacer would solve that issue no problem. Thanks for the video.

    Great video, you should also reccomend that DIYers treat the wood that gets inserted into the ground with chemical to prevent rot. Also worth adding some gravel into the bottom of the hole to keep water from sitting around the post under the ground.

    You did great. It's worth it to rent a 1 man auger from HD for $40 for 4 hours and get the holes dug. You can pour the powdered cement in the hole and add water from a hose. Every body has a different way of doing things. I used a 4' level as the spacer/also kept it plumb. I like your home cut picketts.

      Style. You're talking about two different styles of picket fence. This is traditional. The posts are a feature of the fence. Not to be hidden as they would be in a privacy fence.

This was a great way to do it and it ended up saving me almost $3000 after getting a quote from a fencing company! I used this video to build a 320 foot fence, 4 feet tall. I found placing 3'' of gravel at the bottom of each post keeps the soil from rotting the wood. I also raised the cement to above the soil line, with it sloping away from the wood, to shed water away from the wood. So in the end, my posts have zero contact with soil. Also, those floor joint brackets have holes at the edges. Fence brackets are better attached to the middle of the post, I found. I bought the ones you have, but returned them because the screws were too close to the edge of the post. Maybe your posts are larger than the 4x4s I am using.
    It would be helpful to mention how you determined the positioning of your rails.

    i charge about $8 per foot and use budget fence options. you can get sections at lowes or home depot of 3.5' x 8' spaced picket sections for $30 each. use a lowes card and get another 10% off as well. also cementing wood posts is terrible as it traps the water and rots twice as fast. also many people think fence sections cant rack down hills and they absolutely can. you stand one foot on the bottom rail and hold the top of the section and rack it forward or back depending which way on the hill you are. if its a really big rack a pro trick is using a ratchet strap or cable winch and hooking it at the top corner and the bottom opposite corner and crank it to the rack you need. just tamp the posts in with the dirt dug up. put up a string and run a 100' tape measure out and dig the posts 8' on center. after the amount of post holes needed is dug tamp the posts in at 8' on center. i make two marks on the post: hook it at the top of the post and put a mark at 3" and 42.5". the 3" is where you put the top of the rail and the 42.5" is your ground mark. i put the first post at the ground mark and then either go with the grade of the yard or eye in the tops of the posts. then i go back and screw the sections to the face of the posts with deck screws. thats the absolute best way to install the cheaper lowes/home depot sections properly and will last longer without the cement

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 года назад

      Thats a really good price. I cannot even get the wood here for that price even before the wood prices went through the roof because of covid. I have heard that concrete does rot out the posts but I have pulled out fence post that have been there for ten years and the ones with out concrete didn'y seem to have been in any worse shape. however, the ones without concrete came tight out because they were loose but the concrete ones were a pain in the butt to remove because thy were still solid. I chose to use concrete because it makes the fence a lot stronger. But it's really about preference professionals do it both ways.
      Thanks for the feedback! it's always interesting to me to hear other ways projects can be done.

    I love this! I have been looking for fence ideas for our Circa 1840 home. We don’t want a typical modern fence. We want something that fits the time of the house. We were thinking of a farm type board fence...then I saw your picket fence and now I’m torn! I watched your whole video through and I feel kind of confident about attempting this type of project ourselves...except...my husband and I aren’t very knowledgeable of building things...I am a wiz at assembling things, but building using measurements is not a strong suit. But every homeowner needs to learn, right? Thank you for the inspiration! I subscribed to your channel and I look forward to learning new things from you!

    My husband and I both enjoyed the video and found it well done. Absolutely my only quibble was that I wanted to "Mom" you both into wearing sturdier shoes that would prevent splinters or accidents. :)

    Getting ready to do a short picket fence. and found this very helpful. The one thing i did notice is that you did not include the cost of the brackets in your project estimate. Those are not inexpensive. Thank you for posting this.

      Im glad the video was helpful! :) Sorry I missed that. I believe I bought them in bulk and it was a bit cheeper that way. It was at that time around $60 for all of the brackets.

    I would put all the materials you used in the description as well, so all we have to do is take a screenshot of it!
