I really appreciated that the only information given was directly regarding the job at hand and not a personal account of your whole life with only bits of useful information. It was a great video thank you
would have liked to see it painted. Thanks for explaining why.
No problem! Here’s the video of it being stained. DIY Fence Staining

This is literally the best DYI fence video i have watched. Great work guys. Looks awesome 👌
Thanks so much! 😁
It’s cute to watch your little girl speed walk in the background. It was great to see a young family working together
Thanks so much! I appreciate it :)
Idk why I am watching this when I cannot even afford a house.
You can always plan ahead! :) thanks for watching!!
lol made my day with this comment
Motivation!
Same!!
Don’t worry when you can afford a house, buying a fence is still awful 😅 I have half an acre out back and it’s like 8 grand
That is some red soil you've got there!
I went on youtube to specifically look up how to install railings. For some reason brackets never crossed my mind. That's exactly what I need! Thank you!
Cool, thanks!
Kind of crazy, but this is one of very few videos on RUclips that covers how to make a traditional picket fence! I’ve been confused with how to go about making a smooth even run on an incline and your spacer would solve that issue no problem. Thanks for the video.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much!
We're about to build our first picket fence ever and this video makes it all seem just a little bit more doable for us. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much!
Great video! The cost breakdown and cost comparison is something most youtubers do not do but is pretty much a huge part of planning the projects.
Thanks I appreciate it! Unfortunately the wood prices have risen lately due to COVID. So the prices may be more than I showed in this video but it is still a good baseline to start with :)
Wow! What a great video!! Thank you for posting it. Great work 👏🏽
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! 😁
This is the DIY video that all others should use as a template. Great job!
Thank you! That is very kind! I’m glad you liked the video.
Great
Perfect family harmony. The little one is so fortunate to have parents like this. Best to all of you.
Thank you, that’s very kind! I wish you the best as well!
Great video, you should also reccomend that DIYers treat the wood that gets inserted into the ground with chemical to prevent rot. Also worth adding some gravel into the bottom of the hole to keep water from sitting around the post under the ground.
Very true! Thanks for the tips!
Awesome, Happy wife, Happy life; she is blessed beyond measure, I am going to try it, thank you from Motown/west side!!!!
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😁
such a good diy video no unnecessary nonsense just good information and a well built fence. thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!! 😊
Best video ever ! Thank you for breaking down the cost and sharing details
I really appreciate it! Thanks!!
I’ve been thinking of building a fence n I didn’t know where to start this BEYOND helped me thank u so much for all the details
Excellent video! I appreciate how you explained everything in detail and in a way that a beginner can understand. Awesome job!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching! 😁
Just what I needed! Thanks!
I just shared this video with my daughter. She and her husband are planning a picket fence and we're looking for ideas to cut cost.
Thanks! 😁 hope the video is helpful!
Nice to see you Finley got a work bench
Haha, Yeah thanks! :)
looks bad ass!!! Thanks for the tips
You did great. It's worth it to rent a 1 man auger from HD for $40 for 4 hours and get the holes dug. You can pour the powdered cement in the hole and add water from a hose. Every body has a different way of doing things. I used a 4' level as the spacer/also kept it plumb. I like your home cut picketts.
Thanks! Yeah I am planning to put a privacy fence in our back yard eventually and it is much longer than this one so i will defiantly get a post hole digger next time! I like the level trick!
Thank you for the comment!
You pretty much explained it very by getting the measurements right and level of and following the guide string keeping everything level and even.
Great to hear! Thanks 🙏
Y’all did a great job. I jus hope that whoever keeps running into your mailbox doesn’t run into your beautiful fence. Awesome job y’all both did on the fence.
Thanks! :) Yeah I sure hope they don’t hit the fence!
Great job. It looks beautiful! Great team work. Camera work, audio and information were all good. Preparation and patience are the key for DIYers.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
Hey, this video is great! Yes at 20 minutes it's a time commitment, but this was the most useful one I've found that I can follow as someone who has never done anything like this before...and also has a house that needs a lot of work :). Paying others for everything gets really expensive!
Very easily explained. Just what we needed!😊
Great amount of info! I need details but I don't like them slowly so I appreciate that the video was sped up while you spoke over it. Thank you!
This video is beyond awesome. Made what appears a hard task easy and achievable. Was super good also to have a visible list of all costs & what materials were used + their exact measures. As I am not from the US, would love there to be a measurement conversion to be using the metric scale as well.
Can any one do it.
This is one the best diy video I’ve seen. The instructions were very clear and concise.
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it :)
Looks like I'm gonna have to get it installed
Thanks for watching!
Good job .
Thank you!!
I would REALLY like to see this fence painted! Good job you two!
We are planning to paint it this spring once we have some good weather. I’ll probably make a video of the process and share it on RUclips.
Hi Simon, & Mrs Simon, great to see you guys working together! I really enjoyed your video and I'm currently having to put in a fence, in January so I need all the help I can get! I am posting my fencing journey on my website and I've included all the things I learned from you there, so thank you! You asked for feedback and the only thing I feel I'd like to see more of is how you got to your material plan in the beginning, otherwise everything was just right for me! Almost forgot I have linked to your video from my site too.
Great Teaching Tool!
Very Grateful!
Bless You!
Glad it was helpful! You are very welcome! :)
Thanks Simon, i feel inspired to have a go and build my own fence!
Glad to hear it!! 😄
Getting ready to repair a fence, so I won't be re-doing the posts, but all the stingers and pickets. This helped tremendously - and I do have one section w/ a miserable slope, so hoping I can nail it!
I live in the Midwest and loved the video, I almost freaked out when I saw the red dirt 😂
Haha yeah! 😄
You did a wonderful job in showing and explaining it.
It is understood that the good-looking-side of fence should face your neighbors yard (always).
Yeah, for the most part. It does make your house look better to from the road and the neighbors yard :)
I loveeeeeee your house.
Thanks!! :)
you did really well explaining and showing all the steps . keep it up!
I'm happy to hear that! Thank you so much 🙂
a lot of work, I'm also going to install a 6 meter fence. I'll prepare well first, thanks for your video
All explanations is easy to understand. Information is really helpful. cost breakdown is awesome. Great team and video. thanks a lot.
Thanks! 😁 I really appreciate it!
Great work man!!
Thanks! 😁
Thankyou Simon, I found your video very helpful and you explain and illustrate things really well. In fact I may now try and do some fencing now thanks to your explanation.
I taught for 39 years. You did a great job keeping it simple and explaining the most critical information. One suggestion would be to shorten it even more by removing some of the sped up repetitions. Our imaginations are capable of filling in the blanks 🙂.
I really appreciate the feedback! Thanks so much! 😄
Loved the fence video that's my next project
Thanks!! 😁 good luck!
good job
Thanks! 😁
Super helpful thanks. Like the breakdown of costs etc
So glad! Thanks!
It's beautiful. This is great for DIY'ers. However, you have some amazing specialized equipment. That equipment comes with a cost. Plus how often would I be using such equipment? In my case, it would be better to hire someone. This was very enjoyable and fascinating to watch. Thanks for the post.
Thank you very much!
This was so great that I will try this on my fence, Thanks hope this will be great for Canada too
Thanks! 😁 glad to hear it!
Why didn’t you put the 2x4s over the face of the 4x4s so the pickets would continue over the 4x4 and hide the post?
I agree and think I like that approach more.
Style. You're talking about two different styles of picket fence. This is traditional. The posts are a feature of the fence. Not to be hidden as they would be in a privacy fence.
Looks great! Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Great video ❤ useful tip l learned just now - make sure to cover the top of the pal 🟫 with some wooden ball or any other fancy pointy shape to prevent rain to soak into the wood and damage it.
it was perfect
Thanks!
Thanks for the video! I used this as a starting point to build a fence in our back yard so our dogs would have a place to run around. This was a great way to do it and it ended up saving me almost $3000 after getting a quote from a fencing company! My yard was a lot more unlevel than yours but I used the same concept for the rails and pickets and the fence still looks great!
very concise and thorough. Great tips. Learned a lot.
Thanks so much! 😃
Great job! Great video and narration explaining how you did it. A brief close-up of your template jig you made to keep the pickets level would have been nice, but after watching the full video I see enough of how you did it to create my own. Thanks!
Awesome thanks! Sorry I should have shown that clearer. Thanks for the feedback!
I love it when RUclipsrs narrate after the job.
Same thing need to slow it down to show the spacing template and show different angle of the cross boards on uneven ground.
I used this video to build a 320 foot fence, 4 feet tall. I found placing 3'' of gravel at the bottom of each post keeps the soil from rotting the wood. I also raised the cement to above the soil line, with it sloping away from the wood, to shed water away from the wood. So in the end, my posts have zero contact with soil. Also, those floor joint brackets have holes at the edges. Fence brackets are better attached to the middle of the post, I found. I bought the ones you have, but returned them because the screws were too close to the edge of the post. Maybe your posts are larger than the 4x4s I am using.
It would be helpful to mention how you determined the positioning of your rails.
Awesome! Great job, those are all good improvements! Thanks for sharing your tips :)
Thank you thank you thank you for making this video! You explained everything perfectly for me!
Thanks so much! I’m very happy to know the my video could help!
Very thorough. I like the mention of compensating for slope, rarely discussed. Hence I was curious to see how you did the pickets, but your vid cut off the top of the view of the picket height - I assume that your guide maintained the height. You both have mad skills. Good job.
Totally awesome
Looks Good... Great Video... Looking into building a fence for my yard... Like the picket style!
Thanks so much! 😁 good luck with your project!
i charge about $8 per foot and use budget fence options. you can get sections at lowes or home depot of 3.5' x 8' spaced picket sections for $30 each. use a lowes card and get another 10% off as well. also cementing wood posts is terrible as it traps the water and rots twice as fast. also many people think fence sections cant rack down hills and they absolutely can. you stand one foot on the bottom rail and hold the top of the section and rack it forward or back depending which way on the hill you are. if its a really big rack a pro trick is using a ratchet strap or cable winch and hooking it at the top corner and the bottom opposite corner and crank it to the rack you need. just tamp the posts in with the dirt dug up. put up a string and run a 100' tape measure out and dig the posts 8' on center. after the amount of post holes needed is dug tamp the posts in at 8' on center. i make two marks on the post: hook it at the top of the post and put a mark at 3" and 42.5". the 3" is where you put the top of the rail and the 42.5" is your ground mark. i put the first post at the ground mark and then either go with the grade of the yard or eye in the tops of the posts. then i go back and screw the sections to the face of the posts with deck screws. thats the absolute best way to install the cheaper lowes/home depot sections properly and will last longer without the cement
Thats a really good price. I cannot even get the wood here for that price even before the wood prices went through the roof because of covid. I have heard that concrete does rot out the posts but I have pulled out fence post that have been there for ten years and the ones with out concrete didn'y seem to have been in any worse shape. however, the ones without concrete came tight out because they were loose but the concrete ones were a pain in the butt to remove because thy were still solid. I chose to use concrete because it makes the fence a lot stronger. But it's really about preference professionals do it both ways.
Thanks for the feedback! it's always interesting to me to hear other ways projects can be done.
Great job. Might overbuilt but great explanations.
Yeah, possibly. Thanks 😄
Great video. Perfect amount of info. Plus bonus for the cheater piece.
Your content was spot on! Turned out great!
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😁
I love this! I have been looking for fence ideas for our Circa 1840 home. We don’t want a typical modern fence. We want something that fits the time of the house. We were thinking of a farm type board fence...then I saw your picket fence and now I’m torn! I watched your whole video through and I feel kind of confident about attempting this type of project ourselves...except...my husband and I aren’t very knowledgeable of building things...I am a wiz at assembling things, but building using measurements is not a strong suit. But every homeowner needs to learn, right? Thank you for the inspiration! I subscribed to your channel and I look forward to learning new things from you!
Thank you! I am so glad to hear this. My goal is to help others build and create projects them selves, so, hearing this makes it all worth it!!
Thanks for the sub!
Simple and great
Thanks
Thanks! 😁
That’s a nice job man. I would recommend capping those posts though if your not already doing it.
Thanks!! I will do that! :)
Thanks for the video! Great job
Thanks so much! 😁
Your information was great. I would say that it would be good to focus on how you use the string as a measurement to keep strings straight.
Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind for the next one!
Thank you. This is a great video and will help me with my own project.
So glad to hear it! :)
good job hello from France
hello from the USA! Thanks!
Awesome we'll detailed. Thank you
Thank you!! I’m glad it was helpful! :)
Kept it simple, very good.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Looks real nice!
Great video, I’d love to see how to made the picket guide/spacer too.
Been building fences for years, the best way to set posts is to just dump the dry concrete in the hole and add your exact amount of water. No need to pre mix
Thanks for the tip!! :)
Great diy.. very informative.
Cute daughter!
Thank you so much 🤗 I'm glad the video was helpful!
All i got to say is renting an auger is worth every penny
Love the video. Just enough info
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it :)
I like your wood fence goog job👍🏼
Thanks!! 😊
I'm planning to do the same for our small project, thanks a lot.
My husband and I both enjoyed the video and found it well done. Absolutely my only quibble was that I wanted to "Mom" you both into wearing sturdier shoes that would prevent splinters or accidents. :)
Haha 🤣 yeah you are probably right! :) Thanks!
Well done! I'm gonna try and build my own! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks I appreciate it! Good luck on your fence!
That was good. Thank you 👍
I appreciate it! Thanks :)
Well explained and nicely done. Very appropriate explanation and motivating...
Glad you liked it! Thank you so much!
Great ideas !! Thanks
Thank you!!! :)
Getting ready to do a short picket fence. and found this very helpful. The one thing i did notice is that you did not include the cost of the brackets in your project estimate. Those are not inexpensive. Thank you for posting this.
Im glad the video was helpful! :) Sorry I missed that. I believe I bought them in bulk and it was a bit cheeper that way. It was at that time around $60 for all of the brackets.
Extremely helpful video buddy! As others mentioned the cost breakdown is awesome!!! 10/10 video
I would put all the materials you used in the description as well, so all we have to do is take a screenshot of it!
Great job
Thanks! 😊
Great video.. I think you did a job explaining everything
Those prices are crazy! 2021 52 - 1x6x8 $400+
Yeah, this was before Covid. It just shows how much the wood prices have gone up!
Great video! Thanks so much 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks!! You are most welcome! :)
You explained this project like a boss, great job! Just subscribed.
Thanks!! I greatly appreciate it!
Great Video… and nice job, thanks!
Thank you! 😄
