20 years as a fencer and can’t argue with any of those golden rules, do it nice or do it twice. 👍
Been contracting 30 years. Never heard that saying. I LOVE IT!
I’ve always heard “do it right; or do it twice”
Thanks great listen and read this morning...no yrs of fencing so thank you both...
Taking that slogan!!
My favorite is....."we do it nice, or we do it twice"! Lol
I put my treated fence up in 1991 and after 30+ years it still looks brand new because I stain/seal it every 5-7 years.
Right on brother!
I've been told to stain my new fence every year. Overkill?
@@digitalsmithy overkill
@@mateynine4230 right on. Just spent 8 grand on a fence, not one screw was used. I feel like a jackass for not researching it first...
@@digitalsmithy Not sure what type of fence you have. However, I built mine with all treated wood. I hand-picked each board. Also, I used treated 2X4s for the horizontal supports and treated 4X4 for the vertical poles too. I chose to build my fence because all of the prebuilt fences, at the home centers looked like crap to me. I always use "Cabot" stain which is expensive, but, IMO worth it ($200 for a 5 gallon bucket). As mentioned, I stain my entrire wooden fence every 5-7 years and I use a garden sprayer which allows the stain/sealer to get into every nook & cranny of my fence. Lastly, I used stainless steel screws for the entire fence not galvanized nails.
@@chicagobears9817 right on, thanks for the info.
Utility locating is most often a free service for homeowners. (Just in case someone didn't know already.)
I never thought about metal hardware for a gate. Makes perfect sense! Thank you!!

In areas of frost...along with digging your post holes deep enough, you can also bell shape the bottom of the post hole. That will prevent the frost from pushing the post and concrete up.
Excellent idea! In Colorado our fences take quite a beating from snow and subsurface frost. Next time I replace posts I will use this! 😁
Great vid. Short, to the point and informative.
Tip #7 Have your yard surveyed before even thinking about building a fence. I built my fence inside of my property line 20 years ago and my neighbor recently sued me for adverse possession, (squatters rights) of the land not fenced on the property line. He now legally owns that strip. It was very expensive to litigate.
When I bought my home 30+ years ago. My home's previous owner had tall hedges planted 15 feet short of my property line. My understanding was, my home's previous owner did this because of the utility easement between the two properties and not wanting to cut the grass. One of the very first things I did when I moved into my house was put up wooden fence poles & a fence on my side a few inches short of the actual property line (per my "Plat-Of-Survey" which I received at my home's closing). I was very aware of the issue you described. The neighbor who was benefiting told his wife, who then told me that he enjoyed having a much bigger backyard with my land and did not like the fence.
My father and I built our 1st fence in Florida years ago and we're getting ready to build another. Using steel post and hardware is a brilliant idea!! Considerate done! Thank You!! God Bless
You're very welcome, always happy to help! Let us know how the fence replacement project goes!
It's nice when having a true professional reinforce how you've been building fences (occationally). Thanks for posting!
Great advice my man
I personally do fencing for a living and all great tips man👍🏽
Love the stain, what’s the colour??
Thx man as I’m looking into bids for a new fence for our home. Will surely be using this info.
You can build a wood gate and make it work. A brace at the proper angle, coming up from the hinge side bottom to the top opposite corner and screwing it all together. For added insurance against sagging you can add a 1/4 inch all thread rod in the other direction and raise any future sag.
But then you don't get to charge the customer for all the extra labor and materials which are doubled for the homeowner
Good advice. Thanks.
A couple of these are not necessarily mistakes, but aesthetic choices. A stair step design using pre-made panels can look quite nice, especially on a gentle slope, and in some cases a custom fence that contours the ground that goes up and down just looks like the person didn't grade properly. Transitions can look nice, but its not really a fencing mistake to not have one, as it doesn't really impact the function or longevity of the fence. The rest, completely agree.
You missed the point of that part of the video. He wasn't saying the CHOICE of HOW the contractor decides to build the transition is a mistake, but rather.... making mistakes while trying to do the transition. He was saying to build the proper transition. Some transitions can lead to future problems with the fence (non-aesthetic) if not done properly, depending on the terrain.
He didnt mention anything abt making mistakes while doing the transition. What he did say was that it doesn't look custom to the yard. He says often people go from 6ft immediately to 4ft without any transition. He didn't mention anything about future problems relative to transitioning.
Hi I fully enjoyed watching your video on fencing thank you❤❤
Our minimum depth here is 4-6 feet, because of the Frontline. This transition looks excellent!
Dang! Where do you live!? Northern BC?
Thanks, Joe! I've learned quite a bit by watching your videos. I am replacing an existing 6' cedar privacy fence around the perimeter of my back yard. I was pleasantly surprised to find the majority of the existing 4×4 posts are still solid. I will be replacing most of the fence rails... is 'pressure treated' wood suitable for this?
i fell in love with you when you said cookie cutter fence, great work brother than you for the information! stay safe
first class thanks Joe
Well done
Excellent
Great tips.
I plan on using the tips because the fence put up by the prior owner the top and middle 2x4 twisted and made the man made fence slats twisted now. it is a mess. I am not sure why the 8 foot 2x4 twisted.
Omg thank you 🙏🏽
Another great video
Thanks!
It's amazing, the previous owner of the place I just bought did almost none of these 😂
It's simple stuff, too. Drives me crazy. Not going to be able to salvage much from this thing, but I've got a plan to replace it with a simple, modern fence
What stain was used on that fence? The color looks great! Thanks for the tips!
I've been building fences for the past 10 years in my dad and grandpa's business, and I'm always trying to learn more, great content!
No way or your shit. This video was shit and I learned more in 3 years than 10... wtf
Been fenceing for 8 years now and I'm the best fencer atm. Good luck on your fence if ya go with these guys
Thanks so much
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I could only afford home depot fence panels and a couple of workers from off the street. They did a great job I am just hoping it lasts a long time!
Nice videos!
Thanks John!
Great content.i have small fence business in Houston and build atleast 1,000 feet a week. Good tips don't pay attention to the criticism. I am a real fence builder
What kind of hardware is used for the gate setup in this video? Looking to find something study for a double 10' gate.
About to build a pallet fence and this helped alot
Nice, let us know how it goes!
Excellent video. Do you recommend redwood or PT for fence rails?
Hey great video.. Is a vinyl fence good
fun content my guy
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback!
If you need a yard for a demo fence, I’ve got the perfect one! 😉

Looking for some advice on my diy fence project. I plan on using 4 or 5" steel posts, 7' plus below ground of 4', minimum1/8 thick, either epoxy primed and painted or powder coated. Our frost line is three feet, we are in Canada where summer is the best two months of the year. My question is for sake of costs, can I use a cheaper galvanized round tube such as emt or possibly a couple lengths of angle iron to create a cage, and transition to square below the ground with no issues, should that transition be contained within the concrete, I am aware you need to take precautions when welding galvanized metal. I have also been told you should not embed galvanized into concrete because the zinc will react with the lime in the concrete. Curious if you had any thoughts on this type of fence, or proper construction methods.
Thanks
I just installed a small section of fence on my yard after we took out some shrubs and lost the privacy they provided. My total run was 22' with just 4 posts.
This was my first time and I made 2 big mistakes. The first was I didn't take any steps to ensure the posts were square to one another. I ran a string line from my corner to each end, but discovered after I had set the corner that it was about 5° off from a right angle,The post was plumb, but being off from square screwed up everything else. Next time I would probably use a furring strip or something between posts to ensure they were square to one another.
The other mistake was I didn't notice until it was too late that one of my posts pushed back from the string line by about 1" while I was compacting the concrete. The post was still plumb, it just was pushed back a bit.
The fence is on a weird slope at the front of my property above the street. The mistake isn't the end of the world and most people will never know it happened. But I definitely learned for next time.
I wish I would have watched this a couple weeks ago. The only thing that I am doing bad is using 4x4 pressure treated posts set in 3 80lb bags of concrete for the gate posts.
Awesome points. What brand and color stain is this fence?
Would you make a video using the hardware to make the gate? Frame, hinges, et al? Would the frame have to be custom? Was it welded?
Also, what wood was used for the fence in the video? Is it cedar, or pine? Thank you.
We
I wish you could do our fence here in Texas. We just bought our house and everything you said to avoid has practically been done except step #1. 😅 it’s awful, funny thing is it’s only 3 yrs old.
Is there a name for an alternate panel fence between neighbors and do they bake a bracket for steel post for that type of fence
Are you able to provide a list of tools I need to build my fence?
Also guys make sure to use stainless steel screws if using cedar pickets. If not, unsitely corrosion bleeding will take place.
Hi there…I live in Tampa Fl…my wood fence is about 15 yrs old and I have all wood posts but the weather has compromised about 5 posts..I would like to replace them with metal posts… do you think metal would hold up better in our weather?
When i was pipelining we cut an at&t fiber optics line that was not marked in its actual location, us having the one call took blame off us and cost att if I remember correctly asround a million
What did you use as posts for the fence in this video? and are those 2 x 4's as cross pieces/frame?
Where do you actually get individual pieces for a fence(compared to prebuilt fence panels)? I’d like to do mine but idk where to start
Thanks god bless
Thanks John!
I had a pressured treated wood fence installed here in south georgia by a coworker. He and his brother ran a fence building business in Florida for years and my fence was done to perfection. You dont mention, but they strongly recommended putting foil tape around the posts to protect from acidity/alkalinity? of cement (we used Quickwrete). I dont know if the carbonate bedrock of Florida had anything to do with it. Also, naphthalene and other phthalates are carcinogens, so Ms. Horizontal fence building wonder and post dipper should be wearing a respirator!
How would you build a privacy fence near the septic tank leach field without hurting the leach field? I'm building fence using reclaimed tin instead of wood..
Hey there question from anyone with knowledge . I am getting pre assembled fence panels is there any trick or way to make it look good?(non stair steppy)?
Where can I find a gate frame and hardware as shown in the video?
What stain and seal was used on this fence and what wood was it it looks nice?
What type of sealant are you referring to in tip 6?
How can I protect my wood fence from dirt? Can I put something between my fence and the dirt to prevent it from rotten it?
Thoughts on pouring concrete curb? Popular in my area and seems to make the wood fences last a lot longer since they don’t have ground contact.
Ahhhh man don't do it. Our neighbors had that done yrs ago, & when you wanna replace/repair it, you gotta jackhammer through it... So not fun~ even watching was backbreaking. He gave up & rebuilt/moved the fence line inward, which relinquished valuable property & space. Not to mention if a fence line exists like that for several years, it becomes the new property boundary. Not good!! I know that because as a kid my dad's neighbor had his fence on our property to graze horses, but when the property sold we couldn't move the fence bc it had been there too long & became the new boundary, so we lost 30ft of land along that side of our property.
Utility location is critical but the 811 service only marks the utilities from the service provider to your home. They don’t mark and runs from your home to say the gate area where your contractor run the line. A secondary private company locates all utilities. But they also charge for the service.
The second problem I find a lot is that secondary line from your house to the gate is almost never buried to the proper depth.
You said use metal fence posts for the gate, but is it ok to use wood posts for the rest of the fence? Is it just the gate posts that you want to add that sturdiness to? ty
What about buying prebuilt sections for a completely flat yard?
The smallest breakdown in your “staining and sealing” allows water to penetrate into the timber and rot the guts out of it. Use pressure treated timber and DONT paint your friggin fence!
@@JoeEverest so just leave it as is then?
Joe the fence-pert says, “do yourself a favor!” Aye, aye cap’n !
😂
Hi Joe, How much do you charge to put a fence?
great post. Would u recommend water-based paint or oil-based paint?
Clear sealer! You can power wash it every year or two, cleaning it and refreshing the beautiful nature color. Then quickly roll or spray on a new layer of clear sealer. The maintenance is more frequent than when staining, but it's far easier because NO sanding is required.
Thanks for the great video. What color is that stain? Brand? That's what my wife and I want.
@@JoeEverest Thanks!!!
ive built thousands of feet of fence. great idea on the gates. they do sag unless you use a spring loaded wheel. many people like to use screws on a privacy fence. granted, screws wont back out over time like nails will. on the coast, here in the southeast, its not a good idea to use screws. why? seen it over and over. if we get a hurricane hit, you have to throw away alot more fence if you get damage . bent screws dont back out. a nailed fence; most of it can be salvaged.
Nice information. I have a fundamental question that know seems to beable to answer and the fence that is behind you has it.
Here in Texas all fence builders last the top 2x4 flat and they warp like crazy. Why don't they install vertical like the other two? Send to me the fence would last longer .
Also can you get better strength with using deck screws. It's it worth the cost since I don't have a nail gun?
Thanks for the great video !
How is your fence?
Bob could you plz do me a favor and reword your question in comprehensible English? Thanks.
👍 Mistake number 4 I've never seen that method used in the UK
pete T. Yeah, we use it, not so much with domestic, but certainly available, we use box section rather than tubular section though, god know wooden fence posts warp, steel frames removes that worry, 👍
What gate hardware did you use? Can you please provide a list? Thank you
@@JoeEverest thanks Joe! Watched it first day the video came out. Very helpful!
Your tips are wonderful..but usually it’s Pretty much based on budget
Hello there! I’m planning to build a fence for my pet rabbits, which will be about 2ft high. You’ve mentioned to make sure the fence post to be buried deep enough (up to 2ft according the video), but how about for a much lower fence for these rabbits? What’s your recommendation of the depth to dig?
I’m a viewer from Malaysia, thank you for sharing these mistakes cause these type of fences aren’t common here! 😄
Build it deep enough that the rabbits do not go under, and predators cannot dig underneath to eat the the rabbits.
With rabbits you want to bury chicken wire under the ground to a minimum of 18 inches underground. Rabbits love to dig but they usually don't go deeper than that
I know I'm late to the party but do you have a ling to the gate hardware you show in this video?
Thanks
Would u recommend steel posts for white picketfence gates?
@@JoeEverest yea they want a vehicle gate too, so ik thinking it would be way better for the weight.
Hi Joe! question for you, I am trying to reuse some 1x6 fence panels, but the areas that were originally butted up to the 2x4s are much lighter than the rest of the post! Do you have any recommendations on how to make this color difference less noticeable?! thx
Paint it or stain it the same color lol?
I live in Fontana CA my fence around the pool pump was knocked down. Do I still need to contact utilities about any under ground wires if I put in post where previous ones were? I have faith that I can do this on my own.
Absolutely, it’s just not worth the risk. It’s a free service and is typically performed within 3 business days. There’s no reason to take a chance! Great question!
Hi Joe can you answer this please I have a 24 foot length wood fence what size round metal post would be used ? I used 1 7/8 inch pipe I can put a 2 3/8 inch on the end if needed ?
@@JoeEverest OK thanks for the prompt reply ....
Sir, how long does that type of fence last in a 4 season weather like St.Louis, Mo?
I'm in the twin City area of Minnesota. I just built about 150 ft of Cedartone fence. How long would you recommend I wait before staining and sealing? What sealant and stain works best? Thank you for your great video.
@@JoeEverest Correct...
@@JoeEverest Thank you!!
Gotta respect trades, that take pride in their work!...needless to say...alot of folks are doing things on the cheap....to the detriment of the homeowners or buyers...
How much gap should I leave between the fence pickets?
I appreciate this video but it'd be nice for him to explain how to avoid underground utilities for those of us who are not expert homeowners. (I'm a renter with a LL who is willing to allow me to do little projects as I see fit.)
Sorry, I should have considered that! If you’re in the United States you can call 811 to request the utilities be located. Great question!
Good I'm trying to find how to repair a section of a fence panel that caught fire, I just need to repair the boards not the whole fence, and I need to replace the boards with freshly treated ones. But cannot find any videos on that. No one explains how close to put a freshly treated board up next to the other one to keep it from warping or spliting, or what size or type of screws or nails to use,
I am surrounded in the back by three neighbors fences and wanting to build my own, taller, privacy fence so that it’s not so open. What can I do about the space between the two fences that I can’t weed trim? Any suggestions? Thank you :-)
I would cut what what ever is there down to the dirt douse it in round up and put rocks over it then put your fence up. After that there isn’t much you can do other than keep the area inside the fence trimmed. Hopefully your neighbor will tear Down the shorter fence and enjoy yours lol
I agree with Dannylex; however, but be sure to discuss your fence plans with your neighbor, especially if they have kids OR pets, to avoid any accidents. I put up a 6' shadow-box privacy fence right next to my neighbor's 4' (ugly) chainlink fence. After a few years, he removed his fence and is now enjoying mine.
Hi Joe do you know where I can locate them steel posts that you can slide inch thick wood horizontal on either side of the pole where you don’t need any screws involved really would appreciate it if you knew gonna need a bunch and I know they probably are expensive but I’m planning on putting those into a concrete poured formed 2” wall thanks 🙏
Like the ones you see on highways for noise reduction but obviously not that big of poles just lil ones for a yard thanks
Unfortunately, we haven’t found a supplier of smaller ones suitable for residential installations.
#6? I don’t know about that one. 🤷🏻♂️
Yes it’ll look very nice but you’ll have to restain almost every year from what I have seen. Due to weather, sprinklers etc which means very $$$. I see it all around w my neighbors.
I really like the all metal hardware around door tip and will consider it. Thanks for the tip and have an awesome one!
Joe Everest
I see. Thanks for sharing.
After you stain the fence, what do you seal it with? Thank you. Jimmy
We typically use a combined stain & sealant, such as Stain & Seal Experts.
What size steel post do you recommend for the gate?
We use 2 3/8” Schedule 40.
I mistakenly used a brad nailer when I did my fence obviously I'm having pickets back out now... what type of nail gun do I need for the pickets? A lot of what I read online says 2 inch framing nailer but there's no way at 2 in nail is not going to stick out the other side sense the pickets are less than half an inch and a two-by-four is technically only an inch and a half wide. Thoughts?
I know you probably already finished but if someone else has this question I would tell you to shoot them at an angle. It will also help prevent them from backing out. Alternate too shoot one at an inside angle one at an outside angle. So they look like a V shape or an upside down V shape
Hey Joe I have a question I'm hoping you can get answered for me so there's a 10-ft empty section from two wooden posts where this lady wants a gate put in now she said she don't want the gate as tall as the rest of the fence it's just to keep a little dog in the yard now is there a way I could make that transitioning piece into a gate itself or how would you go about that
Hmm nice to know, thanks for the response and videos !
I prefer not to stain. I just pressure wash it every other year and it works great and is cheaper than staining and also...... staining often gets on the other side of the dog eared board when applied and if you share a fence with your neighbor, he won't like the streaky stain look on his side.....
Very true, when staining we prefer to stain both sides of the fence.
Does that fence have 4x4 or is aluminum posts
How do you keep it from bowing and warping
Hi, please recommend to me (to us everybody who watches your videos), a good brand of stain and sealer for fences and treated wood, I would like to stain my fence and my gazebo poles.
I am planning to apply that kind of stain that is fluid almost like water, that is not applied with brush but with small towels.
And for fence post: Can I use galvanized tube poles instead of wooden ones? will metal poles last more than wood?
Thanks in advance.
Yip.. Love it... Especially the brit using a level as a compacting tool...LOL. So here is a question. Square Vs Round Post? I think square is better for the simple fact of dynamics and contact surface. Round? Well less to rot on short distance? Your thoughts? A video on that with your thoughts would be cool. Nothing available that I can find.,,, Its different in UK.. Give him a break, He does not know how cold and how the wind can get in other places. LIKE DAMB FLORIDA..lol Not that it ever gets cold here but hell the wind can blow once every three years... lol
Use square, then treat the end that's going in the ground to Shou Sugi Ban ancient Japanese wood burning technique that works by charing the wood to prevent rot and insect damage.✌🏻🇺🇸
