Fun Fact: Nico and Blurryface are the same person, but when Tyler looked at him for the first time, he didn’t know his name so he called him by the way he looked like: Blurryface
As someone who has been following twenty one pilots and their albums for years, I feel that you hit the nail directly on the head. This was so we'll explained and you really dug into the album to try to and it. I'm definitely linking any questions about twenty one pilots to this video!
Derpz Da Derpy yeah I feel like the songs themselves are really deep and meaningful and have a lot of religious references and stuff, but it’s not a story that twines together, they’re each their own song

I don't think I could love Twenty One Pilots or this album any more. Its so amazing. This was a really great breakdown of the album and their narrative.
I think this is the best way to explain the story. It leaves you with a lot of information but doesn’t entirely explain it so you have a chance to go deeper than the video did.
“Really pronounced”? According to who, Canadians? British? Australians? The British can’t even say America or Honda, they say AmeriKer and Hond-er. The Canadians have all sorts of speech issues, as do people from Bahston, that’s Boston for the rest of us. “I reject your reality and replace it with my own”. It’s “click” in my reality.
@@ToryHater4069 I think blurryface has some of their best songs (first 5 tracks) but it falls off hard after those. Trench is consistently good all the way through.
MCR: *creates a story about a corporation that tries to get rid of individuality and fights it as killjoys* TØP: *makes a story about fighting fear with hope with the metaphor of Clancy and his scape from Dema to join the banditos* FOB: *makes a story about some secret organization that's trying to eradicate rock and roll and good music and how they fight back as youngbloods* Me: *looks at P!atd* do something
This is the best overview I have seen of the album. You really analyze it and get into it. It reminds me of people analyzing classic bands of the past. Very awesome.
Honestly not a more clever unique band/singer. Tyler truly loves and appreciates his fans. With his music he gives us a lot to look forward to. Every 3 years we get a new album so 2021 most likely we should get a new album and I’m beyond excited to see where we go next and the new chapter.
@@camponyoftoo2463 I never said a song references it, but every album Tyler mentions his guide as God in some way, he mentions god, but in trench this isn't the case, he's showing his doubt of his faith
juan bautista Facio The whole album is structured around symbols Tyler made about trying to deal with his doubts about his faith, trying to work his way back to God - or at least to find a higher meaning. Tyler confirmed it in an interview to AltPress. The person who made this video maybe hasn’t seen that interview yet...HOWEVER, I do think twenty one pilots likes that people have different interpretations of their imagery and their songs. I think they are cryptic and symbolic so people can apply things to their own life.
I've always been a passive fan of TØP, but as a musician and artist, they have my full appreciation. It's beautiful when artists merge multiple mediums to tell a full story. Inspirational
Hi! I really loved watching this video! I think it is the first video I saw about Twenty One Pilots which went into discussing and presenting the importance of the narrative in Trench and how much the band put into it and how actually enjoyable it is to feel as a part of a secret community in a way! Thank you so much for this video, it really made me to rethink what this album and Twenty One Pilots are to me! Everyone stay positive and have a beautiful day :)
I had goosebumps throughout this entire video. I don't know why but whenever I listen to Twenty One Pilots I just forget about all the trouble I have and the trouble in the world. Their songs make me feel so relaxed and so good that I will be forever grateful for what they have produced and what they will produce in the future.
Wait... So Clancy could be the representation of all of us struggling with mental illnesses, for which we seem trapped within (Dema or maybe "demons"(?) inner demons?). The Banditos represents the Clique, which has helped Tyler. Tyler states he's a bandito, and his music helps us.... the other Clancy's in the world.
I love it when artists create stories with their songs and music videos, like how bts had a story with one of their old albums THAT GOT A WEBTOON SERIES.
There's another level to the album: Tyler said he was going through a personal crisis of faith while creating Trench (one that he's still going through); the album reflects the struggle of moving from that place of being certain in your faith, to one where there is possibly no God.
They’re such an exciting band to get into. I’ve been listening to them for about 6 years now but with this album I feel like there’s so much to rediscover.
Tyler Joseph has Anxiety not depression, the reason why he had his hands colored was because right before Joseph got on stage coloring them helped control his Anxiety so he wouldn't do self harm to take his mind off of it.
no.. no. he literally said in multiple interviews he paints his neck black to represent the feeling of suffocating, and his hands black because he’s insecure about what the my create. no clue where you heard that but it’s far from true.
This was the most accurately explained depiction of trench. I've been a fan of twenty one pilots from the beginning and this laid out the story of the way they story tell better than the way I had it in my head.
Ok, first off ... INSECURITY is NOT a mental illness. Everyone is insecure sometimes. Everyone has to fight their fears. The band is talking to EVERYONE, not just “mentally ill” people. We ALL share the fight between hope and fear. Also, Tyler confirmed to AltPress that the city & trench are places he named to represent a sort of SPIRITUAL battle - the city/Dema is a symbol for a mental state where life has no spiritual meaning, no God ... Dema is a world where only math and science matter and where the goal is fame. Nico (Nicholas Bourbaki) represents those thoughts that pull Tyler into that world. Trench is the name he gave for the place where you search for more meaning than just this world - for Tyler, Trench is where he deals with doubts about the God who was with him in his youth, but it’s also where he just finds “meaning for now” to just “stay alive” - being with others who are searching for a higher meaning. There are lots of other people searching for a higher meaning with him - the Banditos. Tyler told AltPress he hasn’t named the NEXT place that he’s trying to reach - the one where he either gets back to God or finds a higher meaning. Tyler told AltPress: “I’m talking about the world I’m traveling through, but I never really reach the place I’m trying to get to. It’s not because I’m holding on to some secret: You’re looking at someone who is still trying to figure out where that place is. ... “When I make it out of Trench and I get to where I’m going and I know what the name is, I wonder then if I’ll be more bold in my faith and what our purpose is being here.”
*Unpopular opinion,* but this is actually so disappointing to me because I'm an atheist and a huge proponent of skepticism/science, and I LOVE twenty one pilots' songwriting and storytelling. I just wish that faith and religion didn't tie so heavily in with everything, because I really can't agree with that stuff from a personal level.
I totally agree with you but I also believe that Religion has nothing to do with Spirituality. I personally don't believe in a God or follow a particular religion but that doesn't make me any less spiritual. Science itself if a spiritual and beautiful experience which is based on logic and truth. Religion, on the other hand, is like a grave practical joke played on humanity.
Annie Keller I can understand that. But even if you have everything figured out, you are welcome to join those of us who are still searching - you can be part of the Banditos and our complete diversions 😬 As Ritik said, you might find some spiritual meaning in the beauty and enjoyment of life 🌼
I have been looking for new music -- this seems right up my alley, especially with the recognition of mental illness. Thanks for the intro to this great band!
Adam Kecskes ooohhhh you are in for a RIDE. I could suggest so many good songs right now but that would be a bit overbearing. Anyway, good luck, haha (VESSEL IS THE BEST ALBUM AND SELF TITLED IS THE PIANO BALLAD/EMO ALBUM)
Years ago, I loved MCR because they always told a story and built a world in their albums. And T0P makes me feel the same way I felt then, like I'm a part of something. Like I belong. Never thought this would happen again tbh. From "I am not afraid to walk this world alone" to "DEMA (our mental illnesses) don't control us"
There are times where I don’t know how to cope with this stuff, the mental illnesses. Tyler uses his music, a bunch of other fans use conspiracies, but I don’t know what I do. I listen to this stuff and know almost every word to every song, but I don’t put my feelings out. I’m about as functional as a one way street in between two cities. Can only go but never return.
Have you tried to write songs yourself? Or maybe write stories or poems. You can pick up an instrument, try to learn it with online tutorials, or if you have the money you can get lessons. Maybe you can draw, the only things you need are a pencil and a paper. You can try a sport. You can start walking or biking. Maybe you can do theater or photography or make things out of clay. Buy a plant and try to keep it alive, then try to buy one more and keep that one alive too. Cook and bake. There are a lot of things you can do to cope with stuff, it doesnt matter if you suck at something, as long as you have fun and feel a little better while doing it. Maybe it isnt that simple, i dont know a lot about mental illness, i just hope that this motivates you a bit
wow a near-life experience... its kind of hard to do some of those due to current circumstances, but I am doing better now that the stress from school is over. I’ve been drawing and painting a lot, as well as practicing volleyball and basketball. I just want to thank you for trying to help someone you never even met.
I'm kind of a new fan but dang 21 pilots is such an amazing band. How they can build a whole universe and still have absolutely amazing music. I'm thankful that they are dropping hints like this it gives me stuff to look forward to
While I wouldn't call what TOP is doing right now groundbreaking (see Nine Inch Nails, maudlin of the Well), it is really cool and has rarely been done on this commercial of a level.
I think what TØP are doing is simplifying this kind of storytelling to a mainstream audience (their fans) who (no offense to the fans) probably couldn't understand a complicated story like other bands have pulled off in the past.
Never said it wasn't good, but check out the story on an album like The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails or Hospice by The Antlers, or the promotional material for Year Zero by NiN, or look into the uncracked code across the two maudlin of the Well albums Bath and Leaving Your Body Map. Some really interesting stuff
Yeah I'm surprised it's being treated as something new. Bands have been doing for this decades. Concept albums are not new. TOP is doing it wonderfully and the album is quite good too, but like... it's nothing groundbreaking or unique.
Thank you for this! I've been looking for a video that I could show my friends to explain exactly how complex their music is, and I found the right one! Really well done 🙆🏼♀️
But you missed out sooo much..... For those intrested please keep looking this is only part of the story and links. Its a powerful world to let your mind get lost in with so many possibilities that would be viable. Just one example, how when in Nico and the Niners is linked to the video of Heathens by these lyrics being played out. We still dont know directly who blurry face is or who clancy is. "Rent a race horse and force a sponsor And start a concert, a complete diversion Start a mob and you can be quite certain We'll win but not everyone will get out"
Tyler is so smart, it must have been hard to set all of this up, its so cool though and i relate to his songs so much in my own way, they also make me feel so much better about who i am and that im not alone. Tyler is such an inspiration and his music gives me hope.
Hi Polyphonic! that was a very interresting video, and wasn't aware of that aspect of twenty one pilot but as a French dude, it really make me think of a very VERY good French band called " Stupeflip " who use same technique of cryptic narration, through lyrics and clip, it draw a strange world with obscur religious cult, languagues, and récurent caracter it is also a strange band because they don't really have genre bondaries, rock, rap, electro, French pop, trap, hip pop you name it it is very good, very unique, and I highly recommend it to any curious mind out there, here some easy one to listen, some are really weird ( shouting "caca" shit in frenchduring a whole minute is a thing they do ) Stupeflip Vite La Menuiserie Le Spleen des petit ( kids spleen ) I hope you will enjoy =) ps : and check out the lyrics it is a big part of the fun!
1) how did I miss this video? 2) I love that Tyler said all fan theories are true so that we can truly put ourselves into what trench means to us individually
Actually the color yellow represents love and support. This is shown when the banditos throw yellow flowers at Tyler to help him break the trance from Nico during Jumpsuit. They also slap some yellow tape on his jacket in Levitate. Also the bishops, according to the story, can’t see the color yellow so it makes it the perfect color to use for supporting each other.
when you go to the concert it all comes together more. everyone there is dressed as a bandito and therefore the fans are also banditos. Tyler has also said that the lore was built after he struggled going through the hiatus and wanted us to give our input on his ideas
Theory: Dema and Nico represent depression Every time Tyler tries to escape they bring him back Boom mind blown Btw I could have explained this better but idk how to
And my opinion neon gravestones is about how we treat people after they committed suicide he censored it in “we glorify it even more when they” then it pauses signifying that he isn’t talking about mental illness he is talking about suicides in big culture celebrities.
I'm not a 21 Pilots fan myself, but this is a really cool story. Thanks for sharing. Also, I wanted to ask, with Remembrance day coming up, are you planning any kind of episode for the occasion? After seeing your Scarborough Fair/Canticle Video, I couldn't help but think about you discussing the history of war songs or something similar to that. Personally, on Remembrance day I am going to listen to one album completely form start to finish. It's called Foreign Skies by a Canadian folk-punk band called The Dreadnoughts. It's all about the First World War, and with the 100 year anniversary of the end of the war coming up, I thought it would be a good time to bring it up. You can listen to the album for free, legally, off of their RUclips channel at this link: ruclips.net/video/NiVLCew4Pu0/видео.html
I'm not trying to be rude or be snobby, But if you don't want to get attacked by Twenty One Pilots fans you should probably start spelling it as Twenty One Pilots or TØP not 21 pilots, Because a lot of fans get very triggered and attack people who said that, Again I was just letting you know.
Although I'm not a huge fan of their music, I respect the hell out of them and I think that they do deserve a video to see what take Polyphonic give them in a video essay.
It all started when at the APMA's when Josh went to go and collect the award and he said Tyler couldn't be there because he was severing ties with dema. Then all hell broke loose
This is so much in depth and well done than @theneedledrop absurdist comedic take on album reviews. I get that Fantano makes sense, but there is NO WAY he can uncover a record as deeply as they one needs to because he listens to so much music. Im sorry, I get that music is subjective but nothing should be passed as good or bad based on a arbitrary scoring system, albeit its one doused in personal opinion etc etc.
@@spyral43 I see your point. In a weird way though, it's often the case that I as a person may get swayed from time to time with someone else's opinion. If there's a movie that my friends tell me is bad, I avoid watching it currently AMC is expensive as shit. If there is a dish on the menu at a restaurant that someone has advised against, I'm less likely to try it out. I'm paying for it, so gotta be careful. Similarly, I watch his reviews, and he writes his script decently well, is articulate and I think he has some journalistic chops. If he scored something less,, I'm less likely to go out and buy the album on vinyl or CD. I usually listen to album tons of time before committing to buy the Vinyl, support the artist. But its weird that he has such a concrete understanding about a concept album in its entirety, considering the fact he listens to a ton of music. It's hard for the human mind to absorb that amount of knowledge. That's just my 2 cents.
i my opinion, it seems the two videos have extremely different purposes. this one explains the story behind the album and brings in the contribution of the clique and the community, and explains why and how people would find this album and band attractive and helpful. however, it's purpose is not to review the album or the musicianship in any way. does polyphonic's video talk about the melodies, instrumentals, vocals, chord progressions, bass-lines, layering, song structure, track listing, production, transitions and so on? no, not at all, and therefore i would hardly consider this an album review. that is not a criticism, it is simply not what this video aims to do. anthony, on the other hand, does not delve into the lore, nor does he bother trying to explain it, and instead reviews the album track by track, focusing solely on the actual music, giving the view and perspective of someone who does not know the backstory at all, like most people outside the fandom enjoying the music casually. these are two different channels with entirely different purposes, and i do not see the reason to compare them. in fact, if you put them together, you get a complete and in depth analysis of every aspect of the album: polyphonic gives the backstory, cryptic messages, videos, colour schemes and symbols, and the social/community aspect, whilst fantano gives insight into the music it self. and quite honestly, fantano gave the album a great review so i don't see the problem
@@karinaube1750 after your reply, I rewatched the Fantano video and I have to admit, that you are right. The two channels are very different in what they're trying to achieve and both have a place, which in fact, can get combined to give the record a total picture. I see where I made a mistake . While I still stand by my point that Fantano does listen to a whole lot of music and is incapable of digesting all the nuances of a record, I will admit that his purpose is different from Polyphonic. Thank you, Karina, for explaining it to me so well. Cheers.
Shreyas Gune you have a good point that as so much music is consumed, there are bound to be aspects of his reviews in which he falls short. thank you for the reflective and introspective reply, sadly not many people seem capable of re-evaluating set opinions, so you sort of made my day. have a great day:)
Is this album worth listening to if you're out of the loop with all the story telling? I'm not really a fan of these guys, haven't listened to their stuff much. Seems like a lot of the songs are dedicated to fans that research, and fans in general.
Nah, you can listen to it without of digging into the story, sure you don't get the full experience but songs themselves are pretty good, I'd recommend you to listen to it!

So glad I am alive to experience this era of music
"cleek"
that is the pronunciation. yes.
Polnajeff it’s click lmao
@@GT_Mr.C no that's just how most people say it the real words pronounciation is what the video person said
creature o I didn’t know that I say click lol
“Really pronounced”? According to who, Canadians? British? Australians? The British can’t even say America or Honda, they say AmeriKer and Hond-er. The Canadians have all sorts of speech issues, as do people from Bahston, that’s Boston for the rest of us.
“I reject your reality and replace it with my own”. It’s “click” in my reality.
This album is SOOOOOOOO good. It's easily their best.
Your joking right??!
Sunforged Doubt
It is indeed their best. This is their Pretty. Odd. or their Folie A Deux
Nah blurryface is easily there best album
@@ToryHater4069
I think blurryface has some of their best songs (first 5 tracks) but it falls off hard after those. Trench is consistently good all the way through.
I think this really reflects the purpose with the music and this album, and it's pretty accurate. Great video!
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why they are the best band of our generation
MCR: *creates a story about a corporation that tries to get rid of individuality and fights it as killjoys*
TØP: *makes a story about fighting fear with hope with the metaphor of Clancy and his scape from Dema to join the banditos*
FOB: *makes a story about some secret organization that's trying to eradicate rock and roll and good music and how they fight back as youngbloods*
Me: *looks at P!atd* do something
This is the best overview I have seen of the album. You really analyze it and get into it. It reminds me of people analyzing classic bands of the past. Very awesome.
I just want my twenty one pilots muse collab already...
They could appear on the next album muse releases! I know Tyler Joseph and Matt Bellamy are friends
Yes I've been saying this for so long!!
The collabo with Mutemath is good.
Kevin Head Literally saw them a year ago today.
Honestly not a more clever unique band/singer. Tyler truly loves and appreciates his fans. With his music he gives us a lot to look forward to. Every 3 years we get a new album so 2021 most likely we should get a new album and I’m beyond excited to see where we go next and the new chapter.
And me thinking that was about religious and Illuminati things. I loved your perspective on the album
actually it is religious a bit, the whole album in a way is tyler showing himself losing his faith a little
@@Cheddar4U It dosent. No song references religion on the new album, they're about dema, family and suicide
There are many “Christian” references in Trench but, only few will know...
I think its amazing how Tyler created this entire world and how we can feel like we are living in it
can we just appreciate the editing
I had goosebumps throughout this entire video. I don't know why but whenever I listen to Twenty One Pilots I just forget about all the trouble I have and the trouble in the world. Their songs make me feel so relaxed and so good that I will be forever grateful for what they have produced and what they will produce in the future.
This is so well edited and storywise so complete! :D
wow, this video is gold... the editing and he way you explained everything didn't let me take the attention out of it...AMAZING
Tyler and Joseph also take theories from their fans and implement them into the lore.
This helped me understand trench so much better - as i'm a newer fan
I love it when artists create stories with their songs and music videos, like how bts had a story with one of their old albums THAT GOT A WEBTOON SERIES.
let's not use bts and artists in the same sentence now
There's another level to the album: Tyler said he was going through a personal crisis of faith while creating Trench (one that he's still going through); the album reflects the struggle of moving from that place of being certain in your faith, to one where there is possibly no God.
He had depression when he was younger
He says it in songs like fake you out
Tyler struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts for a good portion of his teenage/young adult years.
no.. no. he literally said in multiple interviews he paints his neck black to represent the feeling of suffocating, and his hands black because he’s insecure about what the my create. no clue where you heard that but it’s far from true.
What you are saying is totally legit!! It is to bad this “informational” video doesn’t take this information into account.
Moonbeam Thank you!
Anyway, good luck, haha

Best album of 2018!!! Thanks for the video!!
i can’t believe this album was actually good. i’m impressed
DUUUDE, I NEVER THOUGHT YOU’D MAKE A VIDEO ON THIS
Years ago, I loved MCR because they always told a story and built a world in their albums. And T0P makes me feel the same way I felt then, like I'm a part of something. Like I belong. Never thought this would happen again tbh.
From "I am not afraid to walk this world alone" to "DEMA (our mental illnesses) don't control us"
If you like these sort of hidden stories inside music, try Blue Öyster Cult's "Imaginos". There's also a lot of incredible meaning behind the lyrics

I'm thankful that they are dropping hints like this it gives me stuff to look forward to
Just when you thought you couldn't love them any more!
We need this made into a movie. They put so much into this storyline that it needs to be a 2h movie I can watch over and over again
While I wouldn't call what TOP is doing right now groundbreaking (see Nine Inch Nails, maudlin of the Well), it is really cool and has rarely been done on this commercial of a level.
If what they are doing isnt phenomenal idk what it is
I think what TØP are doing is simplifying this kind of storytelling to a mainstream audience (their fans) who (no offense to the fans) probably couldn't understand a complicated story like other bands have pulled off in the past.
@@musicenjoyer446 Never heard a more passive aggressive diss towards a fan-base before
Yeah I'm surprised it's being treated as something new.
"Rent a race horse and force a sponsor
And start a concert, a complete diversion
Start a mob and you can be quite certain
We'll win but not everyone will get out"
Tyler is so smart, it must have been hard to set all of this up, its so cool though and i relate to his songs so much in my own way, they also make me feel so much better about who i am and that im not alone. Tyler is such an inspiration and his music gives me hope.
Hi Polyphonic! that was a very interresting video, and wasn't aware of that aspect of twenty one pilot but as a French dude, it really make me think of a very VERY good French band called " Stupeflip " who use same technique of cryptic narration, through lyrics and clip, it draw a strange world with obscur religious cult, languagues, and récurent caracter
it is also a strange band because they don't really have genre bondaries, rock, rap, electro, French pop, trap, hip pop you name it
it is very good, very unique, and I highly recommend it to any curious mind out there,
here some easy one to listen, some are really weird ( shouting "caca" shit in frenchduring a whole minute is a thing they do )
Stupeflip Vite
La Menuiserie
Le Spleen des petit ( kids spleen )
I hope you will enjoy =)
ps : and check out the lyrics it is a big part of the fun!
plus they are doing this since early 2000, so maybe they are an inspiration
My favorite channel with a video about my favorite band. What a blessing
thats why i love this band |-/
1) how did I miss this video? 2) I love that Tyler said all fan theories are true so that we can truly put ourselves into what trench means to us individually
Dem you now i am fallen deep into Twenty-One Pilots...
trench is THAT album. no award can prove what a masterpiece it is.
Very interesting!
Polyphonic the most exciting channel on youtube right now
theory on cRAck: The trench album is about Tyler trying to escape the ways of Math
Dema = Math
I'm bored
Actually the color yellow represents love and support. This is shown when the banditos throw yellow flowers at Tyler to help him break the trance from Nico during Jumpsuit. They also slap some yellow tape on his jacket in Levitate. Also the bishops, according to the story, can’t see the color yellow so it makes it the perfect color to use for supporting each other.
Please do fugazi!
when you go to the concert it all comes together more. everyone there is dressed as a bandito and therefore the fans are also banditos. Tyler has also said that the lore was built after he struggled going through the hiatus and wanted us to give our input on his ideas
Theory: Dema and Nico represent depression
Every time Tyler tries to escape they bring him back
Boom mind blown
Btw I could have explained this better but idk how to
This video is so well done and edited, good job man!
quickest I've ever clicked on a video
Cleeked
I'm not trying to be rude or be snobby, But if you don't want to get attacked by Twenty One Pilots fans you should probably start spelling it as Twenty One Pilots or TØP not 21 pilots, Because a lot of fans get very triggered and attack people who said that, Again I was just letting you know.

god i love this band so much. i don't think i'd be here without them.
If someone chooses to dislike something because a critic doesn't like it, that's their own fault tbh
Cheers.
Shreyas Gune you have a good point that as so much music is consumed, there are bound to be aspects of his reviews in which he falls short. thank you for the reflective and introspective reply, sadly not many people seem capable of re-evaluating set opinions, so you sort of made my day. have a great day:)
im here after listening to "leave the city" my sister is obsessed with 21 pilots and from now on i am officially a fan .
You can listen to it without having to know the story. The story is something that makes it more interesting but it's not a must
Honestly that’s what I love about it the lyrics and songs hold up on their own without the story I’m only learning more about it now
I never really got that impression. I don't listen to them a lot, but I still think the music is enjoyable, even without the context of a story behind it. Good question! You get a point
