Hi Tom first of all can I just say I am in aww at how amazing you are at what you do for these dogs and there owners, my question is how do you find a good trainer or educator? I live in Scotland and have a one year old working cocker spaniel I lack in confidence when training mainly because I’m worried I’m doing it wrong and possible making things worse my boy is reactive and can sometimes show aggression, any advice would so much appreciated p.s your videos are amazing

There is a young woman / was a young woman with a large black GS at my local walking spot. One day she was pulling into the carpark, me and my dog the only living things around, and all I could see was her dog barking madly between the seats at my dog. She reversed the car and pulled over down the road. I left my dog in the car and went to see if she ok. The side of her face was red and she said she feared he was going to take her ear off. We talked for a bit about training suggestions, but every time I saw her after that she was still being dragged around by her dog who was still wearing a harness. I haven't seen her for some weeks now. I hope she, or someone else, wasn't injured.

Something I never put a lot of thought into. There are times when we are about to have company and we are cleaning or scrambling to get things in order. Our dog definitely notices the difference and seems to get tense herself. I probably need to be more cognizant of this.

@@patrickm7483 I've just recently talked to both a vet tech and a family member about dogs smelling changes in human body chemistry. We smell different, especially during heightened emotions. I know that my anxiety affected (especially) one of my prior dogs and certainly doesn't help my current dog, so I've already asked if we can do vet visits the way we have during the past year, and they were very receptive to the idea.
The weirdest thing for me is of I'm dealing with another person's dog or say a dog from a rescue that I'm transporting, I don't get the same anxiety. So my homework right now is taking the time to work through why that changed for me and how to get back to the way I was before, all so that I can be the great guardian my dog needs and deserves.

I agree . He let her know she was wrong . But that doesn't make her a bad dog owner . That's like calling someone a bad parent because they made a mistake . A bad dog owner leaves their dog in a hot car , or on a chain in the yard all the time . Or abuses the animal or starves it . A bad dog owner does not take their dog to a probably very exspensive dog trainer and spend hours trying to save the dog and other people . A bad dog owner would just get rid of the dog or have it killed . People love to judge others when they are doing something not right in their lives . That's all it is .

I can personally vouch for Tom's behaviour change methods. We fostered a rescue two weeks ago and he is very leash reactive and chokes himself out on the slip. All fear based reactions. I've watched almost every video on the channel and my herm sprenger 2.25 arrived today. I made sure I placed it correctly, secured a safety clip to his flat collar and oh my god. Different dog. He engaged with me, tail wagged and even wanted to play. He watched dogs nearby but didnt growl and looked like he was just interested in his surroundings rather than nose to the ground and thinking of me as a weight to be dragged. I cant wait to help him become a more confident, happy dog. Now if I can just get him to stop going totally bonkers at the doorbell.

As a German Shepherd owner, it’s quite sad to see so many dog owners that get these breeds and have no handle on their dogs. People really need to understand the type of dog they are getting and if they match up to a German Shepherd. This isn’t just a lap dog, it needs full training and not just sit and stay commands. You’re setting up yourself for failure, you’re setting up the dog for failure without understanding your own situation and who you are when getting picking this breed.

Thomas... of all your video content, I would rate this as among the top 5 most important, must watch videos. German Shepherds are a strong breed and can be *lethal* if the owner fails to be an assertive leader. Your patience and the owner’s desire to learn and modify their own body language and energy projection are key to a successful outcome.
Responsible dog ownership means learning about critical factors such as dog body language and needs for mental stimulation and exercise.

You have a great presence, clear understanding of canine behavior, and it's obvious you're passionate about your work and helping dogs.
Your blunt honesty with the owner without sounding like you're scolding or talking down to her is very helpful and I admire your skills, I think I sometimes get frustrated with the owner if it just isn't sinking in and I that's not helping anyone, it's somethinog I need to work on. I really needed to see this...just last Sunday, my rescued Cane Corso yanked me off of my feet on a walk lunging after someone who was walking by on the other side of the road. She literally knocked the wind out of me, but I had a death grip on that leash knowing full well what she is capable of. I do use a hermspringer prong collar on her but I was totally devastated, and shaken to my core, so I was so angry I called my husband to come get her. I feel like a total failure. My husband keeps telling me that she is too protective of me and that she does not do this with him. We also have an e collar and had her at a trainers for 2 weeks and received a 10 minute training with her when we picked her up. I know now that this is certainly not ideal and was at the very least inadequate training and money wasted. I wish I knew you before we went there. He loves all humans but if he sees an animal on walks he loses his mind, lunges with everything he's got, becomes explosive and no longer hears or responds to me or my commands. I love in fear that ill have to put him down if he gets ahold of another dog. So for that reason I always tie the leash in a knot around my waist to ensure he can not break free from me. We still go on walks every day but if I see another dog being walked up the way I'll turn us around and avoid the inevitable incident all together. Its all I can do. I wish you the best of luck. Cane Corsos are extra stubborn.

@@davidse4486 I agree, unless there is some miraculous turnaround. They do not belong together. These days a Google search is all most people have to do to decide if a certain breed is going to be good fit or not. I love GSDs! It's a real drag to see one in this state.

This hit home so much. We have a reactive dog who has required a lot of training (of us!), and the fear I have of him biting someone is so tangible, I felt it through the screen when this GS first reacted with the food. Thank you for all your teaching Tom, it has definitely saved my dog's life!

The biggest problem I have seen with a LOT of women out there with strong dogs: ANTHROPOMORPHISM- misappropriation of human thinking and human behavior/reasoning to dog thinking and behavior.
It is always usually the owner who causes the dog to act like a royal a******.
For me,, It was always harder to train the owner than the dog.
I am not one of those "OH, my wittle puppy needs more treats and soft petting with a sweet baby voice to talk to him,"
Nope. I know body position, eye contact and leadership. This channel is great.
Kudos for telling that woman "It's not the dog, it's YOU."

Hello to all, I am czech (so sorry for my grammar..). we have also verz reactive dutch shepherd. I like this video because EVERYTHING told here, I am 100 % agree. We learn how to train our dog, how to improve her obedience. We see that it is really not easy to calm a reactive dog, for somebody who did never met this kind of problem. I like the way Tom explains, because it helps me to communicate with my dog. I had lot of problems with the corrections, it was not allowed to correct the agressive behavior and we were in "circle". Finally the dog attacked us, pinched just for her pleasure....

    I LOVE THIS GUY!
I have a 6mo old female GS and she had the same behaviors. Not friendly with dogs outside of her pack, she seems interested but reacts by backing into me barking & growling at other dogs but not lunging. We are working with herm springer prong collar & a trainer for obedience & I understand she doesn't have to socialize with other dogs or people but I also want her to understand that it's not okay for her to go bat shit on something/someone that is doing nothing to her. It's definitely frustrating & tiring but we are working through it together 🐶❤

Reminds me of my black German Shepherd mix I rescued 4 years ago! She wasn’t quite this aggressive but definitely had a bite record and severe fear aggression. So happy to say that after a few years of structure, boundaries, and a confident handler, she has come such a long way and made many new friends, people and dogs! She will never be the social dog that strangers can pet, but I respect that and will advocate for her every time! I love her so much. NO BAD DOGS

Treating a dog like a dog doesn't mean you can't show your dog affection and love. It means you shouldn't treat them as a human because they aren't. They have their own ways of getting things done, so if you want them to learn how to interact with you and others then you need to show them in a way that they can understand and achieve. That's called being a leader.

it baffles me how people get these extremely reactive breeds that are often bred to bite people, get no training for them and then are shocked when their dog becomes a reactive and aggressive. Especially very intelligent dogs like GSDs which notoriously need strong confident owners. Thank you for helping this dog, too many dogs like this get put down in our line of work because owners are not willing to go the extra mile and pay for training. And props to the owner for taking the criticism so well and sitting down and actually getting help. Because that dog was indeed a walking liability.

I can always improve myself. I have 3 dogs. Each one has different training needs. I have a lab/german shepard I adopted at 2 years old with major issues. He has more issues then any other dog I've had in my llife. I had to change how I did things with him. Herm springer is the best prong collar I have ever used for training.

AWESOME!! The information about dogs correcting each other is SPOT ON! When one of my sheps has attitude, I reach over grab a handful of cheek and give it a little twist. Straightens it right up. I may be blessed with that reaction from them but I've seen mammas do it and they get an immediate reaction when mamma does it. My male growled at me when he had a chew and I walked by. I stopped when I heard the growl, grabbed his cheek, took the chew and went to the kitchen put the chew in the freezer and never said another word. He didn't expect my reaction, I never said a word. He has NEVER growled at me or any of the other sheps since. Was I hesitant? Oh yeah, but that was way unacceptable and it had to be done. I've been bit before and if he was going to bite, that was the time to have it happen. At home with me. Not out and with a child, another person or another dog. That probably wasn't the best way to handle it, but it worked? Been two years plus and he's never growled at me since over anything he felt he had to guard or protect. Did I handle that wrong, Tom? I guess I got reactive lol

Once an unknown caller called the police on me because I insisted my American akita takes time out. I called my dog and he refused to come and I did what was necessary and within minutes the police came. I explained to him what happened and he was like that's the right way to go. Fortunately too they knew me before now and knew that I was training my dog right. Unfortunately some people treat dog's like humans but then treat humans like dog's.

I had to get rid of one client with a lab who ran the house at 1 year of age - she had no respect for me nor my pack because she was a "dog park dog " - that was her only form of exercise with them? Because of that, she treated me like a cab driver taking her to the "dog park " where she would then take off like I was supposed to come back in an hour to pick her up?! After 4 months, I told them that she was not a fit.

My son got a puppy American bulldog. Boy was she hyper! When she was little, he would play rough with her and he would let her bite him. (My son was over 18 when he got her. Just so no one thinks I let a dog bite my little kid.) Her teeth were super sharp and I didn't want her biting me so I would tap her on the nose and tell her " aah! Don't bite the mama!" or "Not the mama!". Eventually she learned that she doesn't bite me (the mama) even when playing. She still does it (play bite) with my son though, but he does play rough with her. He wanted to train her for protection but I told him that she doesn't need to be trained for that because it is already in her to protect those she loves with her life. Today she is 7 years old and weighs 100 pounds. She is the sweetest dog ever and everyone loves her! She protects the house and barks when someone new knocks on my door or even pulls in my driveway. But when I tell her "I got it" she stops barking and lets me get the door. If I let her out early in the morning and I tell her "No barking" she will not bark. If she does bark one time and I ask her "What did I tell you?" or "What did I just say?" she stops. I taught her this by bringing her in every time she barked. She comes when I call her by her name or black dog, cow (because she eats grass), cow patty (just because), Pocahontas (because it was the only name I could think of), Mama's itty bitty baby (yes she is spoiled rotten and huge), and even "Hey you!" When I forget her name. Sometimes she ignores me when I call her but when I say "Stop ignoring me and get your butt over here!" She comes. Dogs do understand us. Some more than others. She actually says "I want out!". I taught her to listen to sentences and not just command words because I could never remember what the command words were when I would need to use them. I had a hard time remembering her name so command words were not an option for me. Yes my memory sucks! They can be trained to talk if they are a verbal dog. Like the ones that actually sound like they are talking but in dog language. I had one that said "I want my bone, I want out, and I love mom mom." It just takes time, treats, a lot of repetition, and love! Like teaching a baby to talk. She even picks up her own toys in a basket I gave her. But I think she may have a little OCD because every time I fill her bowl she flattens it out with her nose. Even if I stick my finger in it. It's funny.
