  • Having recently reviewed the Pro-Ject VC-E2 compact record cleaning machine, it was time I took a closer look at its big brother, the VC-S3.
    Vacuum record cleaning machines are a great way to improve your record-cleaning workflow and results.
    Does the larger VC-S3 model perform better than the compact alternative? Why would you buy one model over the other?
    Join me for a full overview of the Pro-Ject VC-S3, which replaced the old VC-S2 ALU.

    I went from the vc-e to the vc-s3. Huge difference in performance. Vacuum is slightly quieter, vacuums/dries the lp much more efficiently, and the surface noise in playback (so far) has dramatically reduced.

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  7 месяцев назад

      That's odd, I didn't see any real difference between the two other than size of the unit and, ultimately, the tank. At least with the VC-E2. That said, the original VC-E does have some complaints about growing vacuum noise over time

    I love my VCS2 it never fails to make a difference. For me far more significant than the impressive crackle eradication is on older records. It’s like a veil has been lifted from the music, allowing it to breathe and project from your speakers into the room with an incredible lift in fidelity. I can’t recommend this product highly enough. My only complaint is that the master switch on mine shit in the on position. I hadn’t fitted the vacuum yet, I leaned across the unit to plug it in and whoooosh … my long hair got vacuumed into the vacuum opening and pulling it out was quite a hassle. This machine is so awesome I have forgiven it, it’s worth its weight in gold

    I’ve had a vc-e for a couple years now and have cleaned about a thousand records (some that were rather nasty). I had the first one fail prematurely so I sent it back (Audio Advice), and then they sent me one that was the incorrect voltage, so I had to send that one back as well. The first one sprayed fluid on the bottom of the record so I taped a flat filter over top the vent and that worked OK. The third one I received came with a thin plastic disc that sat under the record; worked OK but the underside edge of the record still got wet (from the top). I ended up dropping and breaking the disc so I found an old 7 inch record to put under the record to be cleaned and that works best of all. Never filled up with fluid but I rinsed it out by pouring water down the vent and turning it upside down, and saw a whole lot of broken plastic pieces came out. Mine got louder as well, especially noticeable when you turn it on/off.

    Nice video, hoping to pick up the S3 in the next few weeks. Out of curiosity why not do a demo with ‘as supplied’ accessories and then show the difference using your preferred brushes and the improvements they give you?

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching! I get your point - the supplied accessories are what you get when you buy, so why not show those. I guess my angle was that I showed those originally when I reviewed the VC-E/VC-S2 but have since landed on this approach.
      That said, the supplied brush and fluid still work really well :)
      Hope the S3 serves you well. Happy spinning and thanks again for your comment!

    Hi, thank you for the comparison, are they both as loud, I have the VC-S2 but planning to upgrade it and would be handy to know how the small version compares in terms of noise, I find the VC-S2 a bit too loud, thx

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  11 месяцев назад +1

      They are basically the same in volume, but the new anti-corrosion finish should make it less likely to get louder as it ages. Hope this helps

    Great Reviews on the Pro-ject units. I am just back into vinyl and have around 200 albums, some of which are over 50 years old and have not been fully cleaned. I would probably clean the records as I get to play them, rather than batch clean. Dp you think the E2 would be sturdy/robust enough to do this? Also interested to know how you would vie the Pro-ject units against the Hummingrur (have heard it's power may be a limiting issue). Final question, where is best place to get GrooveWasher Black Magic pad and washing fluids in UK? Cheers

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hey! Thanks for watching and for your kind words. The VC-E2 would be ideal for occasional cleaning like that. I think the larger model would be completely unnecessary.
      I've got a HumminGuru and have reviewed it on the channel. Compared with the Degritter, it is much less powerful. But... that said, one thing I find does work well with the HumminGuru is to pre-clean with something like GrooveWasher by hand first (this helps loosen things up) then run it through the HumminGuru after and allow ultrasonic to do the finer work deep down.
      Granted, this is more work as you have to clean by hand first, but if it's only occasional cleaning you're doing, it could be a great route for you. Much quieter then the Pro-Ject. Pros and cons I suppose. Hope this helps!
      Re: GrooveWasher in the UK. Last time I checked Juno Records were stocking their products.

      It really does help thank you. I got the feeling that even with the Pro-ject you all but hand cleaned first so maybe not much difference there. Also, the Humminguru looks sleeker LOL 😂
      Much food for thought especially as have now found some GrooveWasher stuff in Juno in UK
      Thanks again

    How about the felt from the vacuum arm, some people had the arm scratch records because that felt is quite rubbish and falls apart just after a few records, usually where it curves.
    I still think the original design of 2 strips of felt in just each side its the best.

  • @jtavegia5845
    @jtavegia5845 3 месяца назад

    It appears that Project has changed the design of the S2 as it is more like the S3, but has a black plastic trim around the resevoi9r level window. It says you have to remove the trim to drain the fluid which makes no sense. Project needs to fix their website. Also my small bottle was a concentrate and did mix it 10:1, but had to order droppers to not make a mess with the large bottle.

      @@soundmatters I’m glad to see they’ve addressed the two biggest pain points by replacing the screw clamp with the magnetic clamp, and adding the vent cover (still not sure why they couldn’t just put the vent on the side near the top)
      I feel like I’d have to clean 1000 records in one sitting for the tank size to be an issue, and even then I’m not sure I could clean fast enough to where it wouldn’t evaporate on its own. Thanks for the detailed comparison!

    Why don't you use the machine how it's intended and spread an even layer of fluid with the goat's hair brush? You're using a cleaning brush designed to wet scrub the surface. Not exactly the same.

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters  Год назад +2

      Works for me, You get the best of both: a bit of mechanical "scrub" and a nice even covering of fluid. I find the Pro-Ject brush drops hair onto the record surface, so I don't use it. Up to you, but that's how I do it. Happy spinning

    • @JJL-1962

      I use a painters edge brush that you can find at any hardware store. It's roughly the same width as the record and it really gets into the grooves. You can see the dirt accumulate on the brush. I'll typically wash them off and after a certain amount of time, I just replace insert.
