When damning evidence is presented against you in court, standing up and screaming "I've never broken the law, I am the law!" Usually does not sway the judge. Regrettably I know this from experience. Seems traffic court doesn't appreciate references to 90's action schlock as much as I do.
I've never had the stones to risk my license on something quite that ridiculous, but did once heatedly admonish opposing counsel in open court that what she was asking the judge to do was impossible "because this is Texas, not Mega-City One." Probably not the best way to argue, but I won the motion.
I don't know why I've fallen down this deep hole of watching a lot of the older nostalgia critic episodes. I would ask for help but the ride is too fun!
5:24 you failed to acknowledge one little detail: HE TAKES OFF HIS HELMET!!! In the comic books, Judge Dredd RARELY takes off his helmet, and when he did, it was always censored so you never see his face!! The creator of Judge Dredd said that the reason Dredd never takes off his helmet is because it explores "The facelessness of Justice; Justice has no soul." Have Dredd take off his helmet is like showing the face of Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, and we all know how well THAT turned out!! It's a rule you don't break, and they broke it in the first 15 minutes!!!
This is a concession you have to make for movies. It's hard to cast a good actor and not show their face. You'd have to find someone that is good and doesn't mind not being seen which is extremely difficult to manage. Too much of acting depends on facial expression. It works in comics and cartoons because you're not constrained to real faces, and high concept ideas almost never make money in movies. Unless you don't need to actually make money from the movie, or it's a nostalgia cash in like Dredd 3D appeared to be(whew did those people get catfished,) no studio is going to buy it.
@@bubba200874426 Karl Urban never took off the Dredd helmet in the movie Dredd released a few years back, he did a pretty decent job of portraying Dredd, definitely not as much shouting as Stallone. The film itself isn't too bad either even if it feels a bit like the screenplay they threw away for the one they decided to use in The Raid movie. In some parts the effects actually resemble the artwork in the old 2000AD/Dredd comics. One last point Karl Urban refused to take the helmet off on the grounds that Dredd never did.
@@aokproservice9324 There is far more to making a movie than just writing a screenplay. You have to write a screenplay that would actually get sold. Dredd(2012) doesn't sell in 1995 as a screenplay. Dredd(2012) is a Judge Dredd movie. Judge Dredd(1995) is an action movie set in that universe. The latter is much easier to sell to a production company. Especially in 1995 when there isn't a comic book movie boom happening. It's not a good movie or a good adaptation, but I enjoy it, and I recognize that it(and Dredd 2012) doesn't get made if it was a more faithful adaptation.

The Lawgiver pistol uses DNA recognition to allow only authorised judges to fire it, it also tags all bullets fired with DNA of the judge using it. I'm guessing it would normally be used to check for excessive force to ensure judges are not executing too many perps, such as the 7 Dredd killed at the start to where Fargo questioned if they were avoidable.

For some reason I prefer the old Nostalgia Critic reviews, albeit the newer stuff is amazing. That song at the end of the Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer review? I can't get it out of my head, it's sheer brilliance. Yet there's something about the old format: a man, a wall, and clips of the movie he reviews. Wait ...am I.. getting nostalgia over the Nostalgia Critic's reviews? I need a moment to process this... TL;DR Please keep making more reviews, you are the voice of a generation.
I cannot believe how much I laughed out loud with this review. So many brilliant lines. "2 for 1 sale....fridays" "No time for stairs" And of course the Seinfeld sound effects and cat fights. Brilliant man.
At first, I thought you meant the movie 2012 (2009), I was sitting here like “what the hell does that have to do with Judge Dredd??“ Took me a second to figure out what you were talking about lmao
"Western version of The Raid." If anything it is the other way around. The Raid is an eastern Version of Dread. The script of "Peachtrees Dredd" was leaked in 2010 and production has started before filming of The Raid had even begun.
They guy doesn't film the uniform and the stupid face looks stupid, even if its still a fine movie... still - stalone has the BODY to fill the costume like the batman in batman begins... does a fine bruce wayne, but isnt intimidating at all old bats was elegant + fearsome
As a movie Judge Dredd is actually quite close in tone and humour to the comics. People think of Judge Dredd as this super serious character (which he is) but the comics themselves are anything but. They are like Mad Magazine parodies of sci-fi cop movies. The comics are utterly ridiculous with Dredd playing the straight man for contrast.
Yeah the comic was made as a satire on the American Justice System and the idolization of police violence and the "lone gun" stereotype. I like both Dredd movies for different reasons, they both weirdly get things right about the universe.
ClockworkFoxify Dredd gets the titular character right. Carl Urban IS Judge Dredd as far as I'm concerned. Where Judge Dredd got the world, character types and the satire right. Both actually work quite well as movies about Judge Dredd. People just rag on Stalone because of his thick, New Jersey accent.
In fact, Judge Dredd (1995) takes several ideas/plots straight from the comics. The Angel family's cannibalism comes straight from the comic (1980) as does Mean "Mean Machine" Angel's anger dial. The movie's basic plot is a condensed version of the "Day the Law Died" (1978) where a madman (Cal) becomes Chief Judge and framed Dredd to get him out of the way. Dredd having a clone brother is also from the comics: "The Return of Rico" (1977). The Dredd comics of the 1970's had a _lot_ of camp elements. For example, Chief Judge Cal made a fish Deputy Chief Judge and in his search for the Judge Child Dreed encountered Faro who had recreated ancient Egypt in the Cursed Earth and had slaves mine garbage. ( www.starkafterdarkonline.com/?p=9963 ) While the camp toned down in the main Dredd books in the 1990s, it went to even higher levels in tie-ins like Red Razors. In that book (set 50 years further in the future from the Dredd series) the body of Elvis Presley (who is worshiped as a god) is stolen. Searching for the body is Sov-Block Judge Razors (a mind altered criminal), his talking horse Ed (who is also a Judge), and the Spooky Doo enforcers (who as the name suggests are effectively Scooby Doo and company knock offs...to the point "Mystery Machine" is on the side of their van).
This film literally breaks cannon. The long walk is literally just one of three options. the other two is either reassignment to becoming an instructor or returning to civilian life in the city.. literally the long walk is just seen as a noble pursuit.
It's called taking liberties. There were worse liberties taken(the helmet thing, Fergie character travesty, Hershey character travesty, Griffin character travesty). The Long Walk was used here as a manipulation tactic in exchange for lightening Dredd's sentence as opposed to Griffin straight up killing Fargo(i.e Cal killing Goodman in the source material). Now that I think about it, Cal would have been a better corrupt Chief Judge(Justice)villain because ham and Judge Fish lol
+The Smoking Skull Judge Dredd works best if they use an unknown actor that doesn't mind that his face won't be shown for all or the vast majority of the movie. Stallone was huge by the time this movie was out, no way he would allow his face be covered. Also, the newer Dredd went wise and stuck to a single, self contained story like a comic book.
+Greyghostvol1 Well, not so much unknown (guy was in Lord of the Rings), more an actual actor who understands the role and puts that ahead of his ego. Like Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta; he's hardly small time, Matrix, Transformers, Lord of the Rings again, but he got the role and the mask stayed on. Also big plus in Dredd's favour was that, unlike this film, they didn't try to make it a big earth shattering event but more like a day in the life. Felt more genuine.
While technically the new Dredd is a better movie, I think this one captures the feel of the comics much better. I love how the statue of liberty is basically a decoration seeing as how gigantic skyscrapers have risen up around it, dwarfing it completely. Clever metaphor for the the abandonment of freedom the world has adopted.
+Paul Staker I didn't find the new one good. It was creatively BANKRUPT. In fact, right after the good 20 minutes...there's nothing to really watch. THIS one on the other remains entertaining from start to finish and got the point of the comic even if it's more of a John Spartan movie.
***** Well I disagree with it. Look, it's very simple : The thing about Joseph Dredd is that he suffers the opposite problem Deadpool does nowadays. People take him waaaaay too seriously, while in fact they are NOT supposed to. The character is satirical first and foremost and the whole helmet always on head is to ridicule Dredd's overzealousness, not because he's a mistifying enigma ! Hell the world he lives in is over-the-top insane like if Mad Max and Wackyland had a deformed baby ! Yes, I agree that Stallone only played the comics character only for the first 15 minutes of the movie (that was spot on !). Yes , he then went on John Spartan with it ...but it was still FUN and it had a story set in Dredd's world as a silver lining (Mean Machine FTW !). Urban by contrast had jack shit to play off of and right after the 20th minute and the first Slomo shot.... I was bored... and I am not hard to satisfy ! Had they gone bonkers and hammy with it, then I would have called it a better movie...but it isn't. Neither as an adaptation nor as a movie.
Nope. The Day The Law Died+Return Of Rico>>>>original plot written specifically for the movie. Rico himself>>>>MaMa. This movie's score>>>>that movie's score. Oh, and the "Dredd tests a rookie" part was better when the rookie was Giant...but that's not in the '95 movie lol
Those who have seen Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 will be satisfied for what Stallone's character should have said to the exiled Yandu. Ravangers shouldn't have a code they should have a LAWWWWWW so Stallone can ham it up once again.
Doubtful critics really care about the real person. They just get paid to make fun of people. I knew that too. Also he rarely watches the movie hes critiquing because he'll complain about something and have a clip LITERALLY explaining the reason behind his complaint.
I don't understand how anyone can not love this movie. Except for that turd Rob Schneider. It's so badawesome. It gave so much for humanity. ...it is the LAAAW! (ps: look for Law remix by Alcaca, best thing ever)
its one of my favorite movies and probably my favorite action movie. Its just so great in every aspect. Too bad they didn't have a good enough marketing campaign, im not even sure if it was in theatres in my country
3:56 there’s the usual ammo and semi auto firing, there’s rapid fire, stun, double whammy, hot shot, armor piercing, incendiary, and probably a few more firing capabilities.
I still prefer this Dredd film to the new one. I wish they made a Stalone Dredd Trilogy one more campy than the next. The second film could have been the Dark Judges ark and the 3rd The Apocalypse War. and a bonus 4th film could have been the Chief Judge Caligula arc. it would have been awesome!
In my opinion the biggest problem with this movie is that it isn't a Judge Dredd movie. It's just another Stallon future action movie with just a little Dredd aspects sprinkled in.
Dredd: "IAMDARAWW!!" "What?" Dredd: "IYAMDAWAAA!!" "What??" Dredd: "IYAMMLALAAAAA!!" "You are lala?" Dredd: "Fuck it". BLAMM!!!! The idea of one man being judge, jury and executioner, based on no evidence ,witnesses, testimony, investigation, discovery, or oversight, is terrifying. Just imagine Mississippi or Louisiana: "I judge you guilty of being black and listening to rap music!" BLAM!" Or imagine him being Roger Ebert: "I judge your movie of TOTALLY SUCKING and wasting two hours of my life!!" BLAMM!!
A little trivia, the guy that plays the criminal at 4:05 has quite a lengthy acting history, including also played Raiden in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and recently being in the movie Oppenheimer.
I loved the reboot with Karl Urban. HOWEVER.......it was too restricted. The orginal showed us the wasteland, other Judge units of the precinct, an awesome battlebot and a sad backstory of Dredd.
Every time you hear a musician brag about Versace, I want you to think of the codpiece Stallone wears in this movie. That was Gianno Versace's idea. You're welcome.
The thing is, it is actually fairly true to the comic in a lot of ways. That is how the uniform looks, the gun has a bunch of settings, and they do go on the long walk.
I loved this movie as a kid. The costume design alone is worth rewatching it. I must've watched the movie like 30 times by now.. same with Demolition Man.. is crazy
Ok so lots of idiots saying saying Dredd sounds like Captain Falcon even though Dredd came first. Neither Dredd movie really captured Dredd, but the 2nd one is far closer that the 1st, though neither capture the black humor of the comic book or the absurdity of the society of MegaCity One

God dammit, thanks to this review, I will never be able to say that simple word in class with a straight face
90s municipal code 213: willful use of one liners, that's 2 years
Code 310: Possession of campy attitude, 5 years!
Code 457: Resisting source material, 20 years!
And Code 3613: First Degree guilty pleasure.
Death! Courts Adjourned!
Why did he read off how many years in prison the guy was going to get in prison if he was just going to sentence him to death for killing a judge, that just seems redundant.
Thats judge Dredd. Always follow the protocol
+ademetal well, if you get absolved for one crime, you still are guilty of the others, like those who get 200+ years.
Because that's the law
"LAAAAAAUUUUUWWWW! >:O"
+Menny moto Imagine someone actually surviving such a sentence.
TAWUNTY YEARS!!!

2:02 ''Judge Dredd armor costume designed by Gianni Versace''
You heard it right folks, that codpiece is designer-made.
Like in the comics
I cannot believe how much I laughed out loud with this review. So many brilliant lines. "2 for 1 sale....fridays" "No time for stairs" And of course the Seinfeld sound effects and cat fights. Brilliant man.
2012 was such a great movie. So violently awesome. High recommendation from me!
I saw both Dredd movies back to back, and was amazed how different they were. Tbh I like both for different reasons
If Judge Dredd (1995) is like the Batman And Robin of the franchise then Dredd (2012) is like the Batman Begins of the franchise
At first, I thought you meant the movie 2012 (2009), I was sitting here like “what the hell does that have to do with Judge Dredd??“
Took me a second to figure out what you were talking about lmao
100 bottles of beer on the LAAAAAAAAAAW!
Why haven't you done any of the Police Academy movies?
Those are just plain bad. I don't think he'd have any substance to go off of the bad ones (Which is anything after part 2)
ETgohome13 true, but it would be fun to see him do the second one along with Spaceballs.
Can I recommend the modern version? Not to critic, - because I think it's an excellent movie - but to watch.
The new one is my favorite
Western version of The Raid. No kung-fu, but good action movie anyways. I love both Raid an Dredd
"Western version of The Raid."
If anything it is the other way around. The Raid is an eastern Version of Dread. The script of "Peachtrees Dredd" was leaked in 2010 and production has started before filming of The Raid had even begun.
No. How dare you ask permission to recommend something.
They guy doesn't film the uniform and the stupid face looks stupid, even if its still a fine movie...
still - stalone has the BODY to fill the costume
like the batman in batman begins... does a fine bruce wayne, but isnt intimidating at all
old bats was elegant + fearsome
Judge dredd was a bad ass movie while growing up. I am the laaawww
It's kinda like Commando or Con Air in that it's so cheesy, it's actually amazing.
ClockworkFoxify
Dredd gets the titular character right.
( www.starkafterdarkonline.com/?p=9963 )
While the camp toned down in the main Dredd books in the 1990s, it went to even higher levels in tie-ins like Red Razors.
"its nice to see over the years West Virginia hasn't changed"
you wound me. :(
Personally, I loved Judge Dredd. It embodied what was so great about the comic.
I hear Dredd did it better
5:26: Rest in peace, Max von Sydow.
Hey Doug/Critic! Review 2012 and Zathura!
Is anyone currently working on a Judge Dredd musical?
I hear people mostly rewatch this for Stallone's goofy acting. I'm not a big fan.
The 2012 movie, _Dredd_, is clearly the superior movie.
+Paradox Acres hell yeahy i would pick DREDD over stallones dredd anyday of the week
Totally. Stallone's movie did NOT do the comic book justice, but the 2012 movie "Dredd" was awesome.
+Paradox Acres
The film is criminally underrated. I don't think it was marketed well.
Brother Dredd! I knew you'd BETRAY THE LAWWWW
Fusilier LAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW!!!!!
THIS one on the other remains entertaining from start to finish and got the point of the comic even if it's more of a John Spartan movie.
saidi7975
The slomo shots were worth it though.
***** Power to you man : )
saidi7975
It is a wonder that Dredd (or the whole 2000AD serial for that matter) doesn't have a kind of Heavy Metal - like cartoon yet.
This is the funniest nostalgia critic episode ever
The Hulk Episode or The Adventures Of Sonic*
"oh boy judge dredd! i loved this movie!... wait, the 1995 film? oh.... oh shit...."
Doug should really review the Remake, i think is amazing
I was wondering why he didn't do an old vs. new episode for Dredd, but then I realized that the new would win in every conceivable category.
Old version had the satire of the comics which 2012 version was missing.
19:29 “Dammit, I forgot my iPod. *sigh* 🎶One hundred hottles of beer on the wall!🎶
Me: I knew you'd say that
*bottles
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" "I knew you'd say that!"
+Jeremiah Jackson "I WILL MAKE THAT A CATCHPHRASE!!!"
*+Adam Malik* I knew you'd say that!
I knew you say that I knew you say that
*+DeathIsAroundUs* I knew you knew I knew you'd say that!
13:01 Look at this dude😂(pause)
Those who have seen Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 will be satisfied for what Stallone's character should have said to the exiled Yandu. Ravangers shouldn't have a code they should have a LAWWWWWW so Stallone can ham it up once again.
Does no one know that the reason Stallone slurs is because a bunch of the muscles in his face were paralyzed at birth by a shit doctor?
+Matthew Schlieben Yeah, Doug's kind of an asshole for making fun of it.
Funny, but still a dick move, then again this reviews years old.
Doubtful critics really care about the real person. They just get paid to make fun of people. I knew that too. Also he rarely watches the movie hes critiquing because he'll complain about something and have a clip LITERALLY explaining the reason behind his complaint.
No, we did not know.
Translation: “reee opinions bad!!!”
Even if Doug is paid to make fun of things, if you think that’s all every critic does then I don’t think you’ve ever seen or heard of another critic.
"Officer Johnson reporting for duty" literally made me laugh out loud.
I don't understand how anyone can not love this movie. Except for that turd Rob Schneider.
It's so badawesome. It gave so much for humanity.
...it is the LAAAW!
(ps: look for Law remix by Alcaca, best thing ever)
7:18 Not sure if this aged like fine wine or milk.
Glad someone else noticed this, talk about foreshadowing
Judge dredd is still my absolute favorite sci fi movie. The way it captured the meg inspired me all my life.
1:55 Ackchewelee, the Mega Cities of the Judge Dredd universe have been a thing since the 1970's.
The Karl Urban version of Dredd from a few years ago was fucking awesome! It was like John Carpenter meets Paul Veerhoven.
One of my all time faves critic videos. Every joke is a hit . Classic Doug
2:14 You give Michael Behn his rifle back right now!
12:53 That look on Schneider's face: "OMG this is the only time I'll ever be in a scene with Max Von Sydow"
The newer Dredd film is _much_ better than this... Jesus, haha
Shame it bombed at the box office! It's very underrated!
its one of my favorite movies and probably my favorite action movie. Its just so great in every aspect. Too bad they didn't have a good enough marketing campaign, im not even sure if it was in theatres in my country
+Zedek Please do the newest Dredd movie NC!
I actually hated that movie. It was so fucking boring compared to this one.
actually I haven't seen this one but it looks better than the new one cuz at least this one is funny
"What? 🌩"
Kills me every time.
The Oh. makes it so much worse🤣🤣🤣
18:43 I swear the judge that speaks here is Kaidan from Mass Effect. Anyone else hear it?
Judge Druid... He is the Lore!
Dredd 2 is in production, btw.... 😝
In my opinion the biggest problem with this movie is that it isn't a Judge Dredd movie. It's just another Stallon future action movie with just a little Dredd aspects sprinkled in.
Dredd: "IAMDARAWW!!"
"What?"
Dredd: "IYAMDAWAAA!!"
"What??"
Dredd: "IYAMMLALAAAAA!!"
"You are lala?"
Dredd: "Fuck it". BLAMM!!!!
The idea of one man being judge, jury and executioner, based on no evidence ,witnesses, testimony, investigation, discovery, or oversight, is terrifying.
Just imagine Mississippi or Louisiana: "I judge you guilty of being black and listening to rap music!" BLAM!"
Or imagine him being Roger Ebert: "I judge your movie of TOTALLY SUCKING and wasting two hours of my life!!" BLAMM!!
Or Mr t YOUR GUILTY OF DRUG SMUGGELING FOOL I'M GONNA SING TO YAH
A little trivia, the guy that plays the criminal at 4:05 has quite a lengthy acting history, including also played Raiden in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and recently being in the movie Oppenheimer.
"Judge Dredd" armour costume designed by Gianni Versace
Emma Porteous designed the costume, not Versace. Versace's designs were fucking ridiculous.
I loved the reboot with Karl Urban.
HOWEVER.......it was too restricted.
The orginal showed us the wasteland, other Judge units of the precinct, an awesome battlebot and a sad backstory of Dredd.
I never got the law-spelling joke.
"Led by judy" :)
Hopps? Judy Hopps? :>
16:25 - Went from cheesy comic book to Boys from Brazil in a matter of seconds.
0:31 came after hearing the news of James Earl Jones’ passing. RIP to the legend
Now all ya need to do is review Dredd the movie.
Every time you hear a musician brag about Versace, I want you to think of the codpiece Stallone wears in this movie. That was Gianno Versace's idea. You're welcome.
You should take the remake and this one and compare them to see which one is actually better and why!
The remake wins in everything, so its pretty pointless
Kantanen Akseli
but it would be entertaining!
+Fiaura The Tank Girl Well I agree with that
Kantanen Akseli
See! It isn't about the value of one movie over the other, it's about laughing ourselves silly!
+Fiaura The Tank Girl thats not a bad attidute on life
The thing is, it is actually fairly true to the comic in a lot of ways. That is how the uniform looks, the gun has a bunch of settings, and they do go on the long walk.
Seth Corbett The long walk is optional in the comic.
13:43 I lost it XD
I loved this movie as a kid. The costume design alone is worth rewatching it.
I must've watched the movie like 30 times by now.. same with Demolition Man.. is crazy
14:07 reminds me of Curse of the Were Rabbit: 'a bullet?' lightning 'a bullet'
I watch this gem of a video every few months for a good laugh never fucking realized Superman’s mom was a judge 😂
You know if you pause it at 7:00 and squint a bit, Stallone looks like an older Joey from Friends or a twin to him now but buff lol
Do you plan on doing an old vs new with Judge Dredd?
I can easily tell he is saying I am the law
Jammy James LAAAAAAWWWWW!!!
Yep you can but nostalgia critic is an asshole
TWANTY YEARS!
02:35 lamo XD
The 'Rico Suave' bit slays me! xD 14:17
Andrew Hodges Agreed. Judge Dredd came out in the 80's and if I'm not mistaken CF came out in the 2000's.
Dang, I really want to go out with Judge Hersey.
Why are the opening few minutes removed from this video?
Yeah, what's the deal with that? It makes the opening minutes seem jarring.
"And she makes a hell of a chocolate bar" cracks me up every time 🤣🤣🤣🍫
