  • Military vehicles for Ukraine’s war effort, sold by private arms dealers based in the UK, have soared since Vladimir Putin’s Russia launched a full scale invasion last year.
    [Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe]
    As Ukraine’s forces have scrambled to arm themselves in the face of Russia’s onslaught, with towns like Bakhmut and Avdiivka now under daily attack in the war, the demand for weapons has never been higher.
    British businessman Nick Mead spent decades buying military vehicles from the UK Ministry of Defence for his entertainment company Tanks A Lot, but since February 2022, Ukrainians desperate for armour have been buying them off him.
    We followed 25 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from Nick’s farm in Northamptonshire to the front lines in Ukraine.
    But Nick’s vehicles are not the only ones on the road.
    More than £30 million worth of military vehicles were shipped to Ukraine from the UK between April and September 2022 alone, according to government data, while in the whole of 2021 only £37,000 worth of vehicles were sold, in 2020 it was £550,000 and in 2019 nothing was sold.
    But, the soaring demand for British armoured vehicles has driven prices up, leading some to accuse sellers of profiteering.

      Thank you for your understanding. My family have known Nick and his family for donkey's years. I can honestly say that he is one of the kindest, nicest, most decent people out there. He's an "accidental arms dealer", doing this purely because he has the contacts and the know-how, and he genuinely wants to help Ukraine.
      The problem is that, before the war, he was not used to dealing with snakes - and he's genuinely been appalled to be a part of some of the profiteering initiated by others. It was never what he wanted - he just wanted to help and earn a fair wage. He's tried to make the best of a bad situation, learn from it, and only sell to those who have prove themselves trustworthy - so he shouldn't be blamed for their greed.
      People have to remember that, in a cost of living crisis (caused by the pandemic, Brexit, Truss tanking the economy, and the war), his original leisure business has suffered because people don't have as much money for fun days out. So this has kept him, his family, his business (& business associates) afloat. The man's got to pay his bills. He is also trying to do the right thing. His heart is in the right place and pretty much everyone who knows him would vouch for that 👍

Comparatively speaking, there weren't many Spartans made compared to the vast numbers of BTRs, MT-LBs, etc. manufactured by the Soviet Union/Russia. Huge numbers of these vehicles, along with T-54/-55 and T-62 tanks and other AFVs, we're sold/given to nations friendly to the Soviet Union/Russia. Many of these vehicles are still around, unused, and I am certain many nations will be willing to sell these weapons to arms dealers so they can be used on the front lines in Ukraine, allowing the war to, unfortunately, drag on for some time.

    Old APCs, CVRTs, 432s and maybe Bulldogs are one thing. The supply chain and maintenance of getting spares will be the problem. CVRTs, as I remember, reliableish. 432s, and I did see a 434 next to one with a pack out, are another thing.

    • @mikebrase5161
      @mikebrase5161 Год назад

      Are you a Brit? I'm a Yank, the 432 isn't that similar to our American 113? If so breaking down a lot will be a problem. Simple stuff like road wheels and spare track would be common to have to replace. The logistics for the Ukrainians has to border on madness.

    • @davidkerrigan3095
      @davidkerrigan3095 Год назад +1

      @@mikebrase5161 yes bud. The 432 is similar in appearance to the 113 (ironically I nearly got a contract to work on 113s but didn't work out) but the "running gear" track looks very similar to CVRT. So the 432 got a major revamp to upgrade it to Bulldog. Amongst many improvements, this was fitted with a straight six diesel and new gearbox, including various electronic upgrades (previously electric). The 432, the dieselised version (on its inception was petrol), as I recall is notably unreliable. To do any major work (on either) means taking the "powerpack" out.
      So its one thing to buy an APC, but each APC will need a whole lost of general spares. I don't just mean road wheels and spare track. Each vehicle will probably have its own "battle box" of these items; its where repairs become complex and complicated.
      The problem I concieve is that if you are running a multi-platform fleet from a variety of nations, then logistics starts to become a major major headache.
      Additionally, the 432 Bulldog and CVRT have aluminium armour which anything bigger than 7.62 and/or with a larger shell will get through. Bad for the crew and passengers, obviously, but equally bad for the running gear and pack.
      Its one thing to get a bullet hole in a Ford Taurus block because these are fairly common. Now lets imagine trying to get replacement parts in a logistically demanding environment for an ancient bit of kit.
      Don't get me wrong. I am not anti-Ukraine or anti-Russia. Nobody wants a war in Europe, nobdoy wants a war at all. We are all brothers and sisters and should make peace and get on with each other.

      Weapons are no problem. Supplying them via land border is difficult. Neighbouring countries like India, Bangladesh, china or Thailand will not allow it. Ukraine does not have this problem.

    I don't for sure if what this video is saying is true, but if it is God bless Nick Mead for trying to use his business/position to try and help the people in Ukraine instead of just trying to profit from them. There is not enough people in the world like him who are trying to do the right thing instead of just trying to make as much money as they can.

      Whatever is the case, Ukraine needs this stuff badly and it's good there are indirect options to get more armour. Money can't outweigh human lives.

      He literally says in the video he is profiting from war but hey business is business at the end of he day. And I’m gonna bet this is not his first time selling his war equipment to countries that have similar conflicts or to dictators that want to use their toys on civilians 🤷🏾‍♂️

    Leaving bodies around could ruin the whole process.
