I'm a dental office manager with over 35 years experience. Shouldn't be more than $125. BTW, ask them if they coded for D9110 (palliative emergency treatment for pain) and a couple of x-rays. I've never heard of any dental insurance that doesn't cover D9110 (may be subject to your annual deductible.) X-rays are super inexpensive. If they use D9110, they can't charge separately for the desensitizer. Is the tooth hot or cold sensitive? Sometimes teeth have a tiny crack which can cause sensitivity, sometimes we have a small amount of gum recession with can also cause (especially) cold sensitivity. Heat sensitivity is something more indicative of the need for a root canal. Also, sometimes we have areas of sensitivity that can be acute, but cannot be diagnosed. We may have a bite discrepancy which can cause sensitivity. Did your dentist check your bite by having you tap-tap-tap on some carbon paper?
We feel really bad when someone is in pain but there is no obvious reason for why. You need to see a senior dentist who has "seen it all" who can think outside of the box, and not just depend on an x-ray. Experience is often the most important factor in being a dental detective. If you use your Sensodyne toothpaste day and night for 2 weeks and you still have pain, ask to be referred to a endodontic (root canal) specialist who has the ability to take a "CBCT" a dental scan, so they can look for possible fractures or other problems that a regular x-ray (or eyes) cannot detect. Wishing you all the best! (if you ever have dental questions, let me know)

@@Kevinbbeauty btw Kevin, I would look into possibly your gums receding and exposing the nerve. I had the same thing with cold drinks! turns out mine was my gums slightly receding and exposing the nerves, and omg I had to fight for my life to get composite bonding on some back molars because they hurt so much from cold drinks and even brushing. I was even using Sensodyne, and they totally ignored my sensitivity issues, until 2 years later I was almost in tears because 1 tooth needed a root canal from a deep cavity on the side (not surprised, it hurt to brush sometimes, not always, it was cold drinks first, gradually then brushing, and I tried even though this sharp pain)
turns out, I was brushing the old-school way that they taught us. turns out, that caused my gums to slightly recede, but the composite bonding saved these same issues with sensitivity instantly and my teeth probably. 1 on each middle molar so 3 in total, except the root canal. 😢 i wish I was more assertive but they just said oh just Listerine and Sensodyne, and sent me on my merry way, like I was making it up.

As someone who works with doctors, here are some tips.
NOW THESE ARE NOT THE END ALL BE ALL...BUT I find that these things work.
#1 Get a female doctor...I hate to generalize BUT female doctors are just built differently.
#2. Get a DO instead of an MD. If I remember correctly, DO are trained more in patient care and bedside manner. I worked with a lot of DO and they usually have great listening skills.
#3 DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GET A DIFFERENT DOCTOR. Doctors, you need to treat them like you're on a date. If they suck....go to the next one. You deserve the best healthcare possible, and there is someone out there for you.
#4 The dental industry works WAY DIFFERENT than the regular medical industry when it comes to insurance. So make sure you check your insurance plans before you go. They will get you for all your $$$$.
    Hope this helps ❤❤❤

I completely agree! Both of the dentists I go to are women and they are very gentle but thorough with the cleanings and procedures. And they are more upfront with what is going on such as what fillings I need, what my insurance covers, what tooth paste/mouthwash I should use. I've had so many bad experiences with male doctors especially when I've decided to go to clinics when I didn't have insurance.

Omg Kevin, I’d fight that bill! Heack no they should have told you up front. My dentist always told me upfront what was and wasn’t covered. they’d even try their best coding to reduce cost: they are horrible 😤 I’m angry on your behalf. That’s why I haven’t changed specific doctors because I found out years later that I had an autoimmune disorder with my blood. So many doctors just ignored me and thought I was looking for meds yet I didn’t take them. Now the past 10+ years I found 2 specialists and I don’t care I have to drive 3hrs (round trip ) to be seen. He cares, they recommend what I say about my life and checked in on me during the pandemic to make sure I was healthy and mentally okay. We need more of him .

    • @vickimanager
      @vickimanager 6 месяцев назад +6

The dentist doesn't have any idea of what insurance does and does not cover; however, before anything is recommended, a patient can always ask to be quoted any expected out-of-pocket fees. There should be a treatment coordinator (called many different things, but they serve the same role) who can let you know.

Agree w/ Vickimanager. Insurance is sooo non-standardized. Literally if you have insurance there is nothing standardized from company to company or policy to policy. I totally understand why our patients get upset because I’m one myself and I’m going through the same things

I'm a physical therapist and I'm so sick of having patients who say the doctor never even touched them and diagnosed them with something that isn't what they have. Or sadly other PT's my patients have seen who never even worked on them, just sent them off on exercises basically alone. Just lazy, and infuriating.

Unfortunately, additional fees will apply. And yes, I wish more doctors would say IDK. You definitely had a terrible dental assistant. He/she should have made sure which side/tooth you were talking about. It is our terrible dental/healthcare system. It is all way too expensive.

I’ve seen a handful of comments suggesting it may be gum recession. That’s exactly what I think too. I have similar experience. Brushing too hard, teeth grinding and genetics are all possible causes. Sensodyne toothpaste has helped me a lot. You can also rub a bit of it onto the area after brushing. Also, switch to ‘soft’ bristles. ❤

I've been a dental nurse for 22 years. It could be loss of enamel on the tooth which can make the tooth sensitive.
Enamel wear can come from acidic drinks (sodas, energy drinks, juices). Try some sensitive toothpaste. You can put the sensitive tooth paste on the tooth as a spot treatment as well. It'll help.
You can never get back enamel.
After drinking acidic drinks, have a drink of water afterwards

CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY! It SHOULD be covered because you went for an actual issue and they can code it as such, and they can find another medication that IS covered or offer over the counter suggestions. You need to call your insurance and find out why it denied. It may be "not covered as not medically necessary" but then the dentist has to submit notes to support the visit. FIGHT THAT SHIT.

You have to refrigerate natural peanut butter ‘cause all the oil in it. If you don’t refrigerate it, it will go rancid. And refrigeration also keeps it from separating. Pro-tip: store the jar upside down in the fridge. The oil will go to the bottom of the jar and you won’t have to mix it every time you use it.

Kevin - re teeth. I've had the same and it's from clenching and grinding in my sleep.
I got fitted with a lower mouth guard to help and I've also now got TMD in my jaw too.
    It's not fun at all.
P.S. use a sensitive toothpaste to help. Also alcohol free mouth wash.
But, I'd see a better Dr about a mouth guard maybe to help with the night time grinding and clenching.
Sensodine is a good brand for sensitive toothpaste also.
I do all this and things have improved.
Here's how bad my clenching is .... I've put a very fine and small crack in my far back molar. And the *only* treatment for now is the mouth guard to help that until it becomes bigger then they'll fix it.
I now don't have tooth pain or sensitivity since using the mouth guard and alcohol free mouth wash and gentle toothpastes.
You're doing the right things but why they didn't send you to a specialist for a mouth guard fitting along with your x rays so they can see what's going on?? Weird.
But, it's likely as I've said, you're clenching in your sleep and maybe also grinding on that side.
Re eating- have softer foods for a while and not too cold or hot. Also, don't go for burgers or steaks where you have to open your jaw wide or have to chew a lot. That's what the specialists told me to do and also cut up my food into tiny pieces or if wanting a burger, cut it up into small bites.
Sorry, I know that's a lot of info. Hope it helps.

Ugh, as a dental hygienist this dentist story annoys me so much. There is a product called "endo ice" that is cold enough to test very cold sensitivity reactions. The dental assistant definitely should've verified what was going on before even starting x-rays. And yes, there are times when we can't see anything on x-rays or in the mouth-- if it's really bad and reactive to a good enough cold test, we might refer you to a specialist to see if they can figure it out. Or, we think of a couple other theories and send you to check that out, if we can. Otherwise, sometimes it is a wait and see kind of situation, but we always tell you to let us know if it gets worse, etc., so we can check it again. Because sometimes it takes a while for things to show up on x-rays. Another theory, if you have any recession in that area that has exposed root surface, that could do it. There's products to help that. There's sensitivity toothpastes you can try (give it two weeks to work). I will say, you don't want him to start just drilling on teeth, because you don't want to ruin good tooth structure without there ending up being any decay. Because that just leaves room for potential bigger problems in the future. Intact tooth structure is always the best if it's possible. That being said, they should have explained this all to you much better. That is so frustrating.

Kevin, the dental office sounds terrible! I have had my share and I am so sorry you went through that.
I'm going to share 2 things I had that.Maybe what you have going on. I have a neurological problem called trigeminal neuralgia. I had a dentist eventually put ice on top of my teeth.Which caused agony but definitely was a better method of identifying the sensitive tooth. Also if you have this condition the shooting pain might go up through your nose or eye or even your ear.
No matter what it is I wish you health and healing.
By the way even if the x ray was normal it is possible that you might have an infection at the tooth. Don't be shy about going to another dentist if you are still in pain. There are sensitive teeth, and there is an abscess. Dental pain is a bitch. Wishing you the best!

I completely agree with you guys regarding doctors. It's a shame because, years ago, I was able to find a few very caring doctors. However, it seems times have certainly changed. Being someone with a very rare disability, I need a doctor who is going to take their time. Instead, I get doctors who shrug and walk away or give me attitude when they can't figure out the problem. They are clearly out of their depth, so they just blame it on my disability and say I'll just have to deal with it since this is a chronic condition. When a doctor tells you to go on pain management as a middle schooler because they don't have a better answer, something is seriously wrong with the medical system. I'm nearly 40 now and unfortunately things haven't improved much. It's scary when you know more about your condition than the doctors do and yet they insist on continuing to treat you like an invalid just because you're disabled. Whatever happened to bedside manner?
