I think I'm a man of a certain age that remembers my parent's friends who could afford high end audio in the early 80s when speakers of this type were the norm. Those systems had a very clean sound that is hard to replicate. They just sounded 'smoother' than some of the modern gear.

Exactly. The modern Polk tower speakers are too bright sounding. IMO. That's why I'm leaning toward the KLH Model 5. I remember friends' HI-FI systems from the ’70s. They had a balanced sound.

I, too, remember this time! And I am looking for it again. Most of the modern gear that I have listened to has left me wanting.. I listen to it and think that sounds OK but not like the big full range speakers we listened to as kids.

I love my model 5’s! Have owned for a year now and the magic has not worn off. I’ll still be surprised by certain recordings and what these speakers can do with them.
I have done in home demos with a Yamaha AS-1100, Marantz 40n, and Leak Stereo 130.
VASTLY different sound with each of those amps, so i think you really nailed it on that point.
Shockingly, what sounds best to my ear is my trusty (and budget friendly) Yamaha AS-501. Smooth & balanced without sacrificing too much on excitement when the music calls for it.

It's good to see the comeback of the bigger box 3-way speaker with several manufacturers returning them to their line-up. They were the 'normal speaker' around the '70s when I got into audio. I had a pair of Electro Research 310s that I later sold to a friend and he recently told me he still uses them and they still sound great.

As someone who owns a pair, I would say use that knob on the back and burn those suckers in. When I first hooked them up I was worried that the high end would not work for me.When you are ready for more, toe them in and / or use the treble knob.
"Break-In Period: The KLH Model Five loudspeaker will sound great right out-of-the-box. But since a new speaker include many moving parts, these parts need time to adjust to one another and therefore some amount of "break-in" is required. In order for the loudspeaker to sound its best, KLH recommends the speaker to be played at a moderate volume for at least 8 hours prior to any critical listening. - KLH"
As far as the low end
"The KLH Model Five loudspeaker is tuned for 6" to 24" off the back wall and at least 24" from the corner of the listening room. For an otherwise neutral listening room, this should be considered the best starting position when first setting up the loudspeakers. - KLH"
    Hope this helps someone.
Oh and I used the L.O.T.S. method from New Record day. Thats what really took it to the next level.

I think that Henry Kloss would like them. R.I.P., Henry - and thanks for everything!
On the power thing, my old KLH Model 35 system came with the KLH 6s. It had 20w RMS. It was more than adequate. It was played LOUD when asked. While I’m sure that the new 5s are a bit less sensitive, I would bet that 20w would suffice.

  • @swinde

I would think this would be considered an acoustic suspension design. The original KLH brand was acoustic suspension. The founder of KLH had been employed at Acoustic Research in Boston. The original speaker of this type was the AR-1W and the AR-3. This design was a break through allowing for bass down to 30 Hz in a very small (at the time) box. 1.7 cubic foot. The down side is they require more amplifier power, but with the power available now it is no issue.

Thanks Randy, good to see you review this speaker. This sounds like a speaker that could be a good endgame speaker for someone in the 2k-4k market. Since I am not in that market, I will appreciate them from afar and wish those that are good listening.

    • @onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475
      @onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475 2 года назад +1

Sooner or later, they end up on the used market for a good price. Until then, speaker designing is an option with today's computer programs and even plans available online. You can get a lot of return on investment there, especially if you build the cabinets of large speakers and don't have to pay for shipping. Make them double wall and fill it with sand, or use constrained layer dampening from nuclear submarine technology.
You can probably get pretty close for $500-$700, I'd imagine.

My Model 5's are keepers, they are not going anywhere. And Randy is spot on with his transparency remark and equipment choice. I played around with some different gear, and found they sounded different with each equipment change. I find Clas A/B preamp and amps play the best to my ear. I am using the Ares II, along with the Denafrips Hades and Thallo amps with the Node 2021. Not experiencing anything hot or spicy in regards to mids or highs. Randy was spot on with his review.

  • @keithwalker8090
    @keithwalker8090 2 года назад +24

I've always preferred sealed speakers. The bass always sounds right, and the setup is no fuss. A three-way done right (whatever that means) will usually sound better than a two-way. I haven't heard the KLH, paper mid, and woofer, check that. The Aluminum dome tweeter is a cringe moment for me. According to the reviews, KLH nailed it. When Cheapaudioman says a $2600.00 speaker sounds great, that puts the crown on it.

    • @onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475
      @onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475 2 года назад +3

Sealed are better. The question comes in at small driver size, where many people prefer a bass boost. But for large drivers, the coherent bass output of a speaker NOT changing over the frequency range (as ported do) sounds more like actual music every time. If you have room for an 8" woofer, sealed is a strong recommendation. 6" is more subjective, but 6" with passive radiator (a sealed variant) is finding its way into more and more high-end (like the $30,000 PSAudio F-30's).
Sealed just sounds better, provided the bass frequencies are sufficiently represented.

I bought a pair of the Model 5s a few months ago, and I could not agree more with everything in this review! I run the vintage looking speakers using some vintage gear, a Hafler DH-200 amp (I built from the kit back in the day...) and the Halfer DH-101 preamp. The Model 5s are just a joy to listen to, and I can listen to them for extended periods of time without any "listening fatigue." When I bought these, I went into the store to listen to some KEF LS50 metas, thinking that was what I was going to buy based on reviews. But when I heard the KLHs, for my preferences, there wasn't any contest. They aren't cheap, true. But I see these as a long-term investment that I hope to be enjoying for a decade or more.

thanks for your review ; speakers with a port have rigid woofer cones , sealed speakers , we prefer the term "acoustic suspension" developed by AR founder , and then KLH ,
well they are not rigid ,but more pliable , the secret is the air trapped inside the speaker enclosure , acts as a air spring, restoring the rigidity to the woofer, benefit being low frequency roll off extended , now with a ported speaker the bass tends to fall off a cliff and on the acoustic suspension speaker the bass gradually rolls off , giving it a wee bit deeper bass response.
When the designer of the first AR speaker Edgar Villcar ,( type o there) was able to achieve a huge amount of bass from such a small cabinet ,as oppose to the same performance from a cabinet 4 times the size ,the only down side is they need a lot of power

Have no idea what they cost new, but his ex had kicked both woofers, so I re-coned em, and have used them for the last 10 years with my pioneer receiver. Honestly not an audiophile, just want it loud without distortion.

"Air Suspension" = sealed box. Bass Reflex is ported OR has a passive radiator. In either case there is a second vibrating member that is tuned to the free air resonance of the woofer.

Just want to clarify terminology on speaker design. Bass reflex is another term for ported speaker enclosure. Well designed sealed enclosure speakers generally fall into two camps. Infinite baffle, and acoustic suspension. Infinite baffle speakers require relatively large enclosures to isolate rear waves from front, and to minimize the interaction of the trapped air on the woofer. Acoustic suspension makes use of the trapped air to shape the response of the low frequency, and are relatively small compared to infinite baffle designs. In each case, the woofers are specifically designed to work with the type of enclosure intended. Infinite baffle designs have efficiencies that rival the ported designs by virtue of the woofer characteristics. Acoustic suspension designs trade off efficiency for low bass response in small enclosures. Acoustic suspension designed woofers would perform poorly in an infinite baffle enclosure. Henry Kloss was a developer of the acoustic suspension speaker in the 1950’s when he worked for Acoustic Research.

They look like my old AR-58's that have a 12" woofer rather than a 10". I have never felt the need to buy something else in the last 30+ years since I bought them new for $800 a pair. I have had to refoam the woofers twice, and the midrange once, but that was easy to do. I am sure those that own these "5's" will love them.

I bought these about a year ago. I would say that these are pretty damned good, and much of what this guy says is pretty close. Especially with the amplifiers. I have a Sunfire limited edition cinema grand. It has 400 watts per channel so I had to be a little careful not to overdrive these. Also they just didn't sound great with this amp. Sometimes they sounded great, but I just didn't get a good soundstage with it. Plus the tweeters could sound really harsh with it. I traded out to a couple of Marantz MA-500 mono blocks. Made in the late 80's to early 90's. Much better!! They have 125 watts per channel, and 175 watts 4 ohm. In my opinion more than enough power.
Honestly about the bass. I am a bit of a bass head so at least in my room it just wasn't enough. Mid bass is fairly good, and has become better over time. Plus with my set up I cannot move my speakers far enough back to take advantage of the wall reinforcement. I have mine 15" from the wall behind them.
Here's my last observation, and I think it's a very important one. I never ever believed the hype about speaker break in, but in this case it's true. When I first bought these I ended up turning the level adjustment for the high end on the back of the speakers all the way to low. It's been a bit over a year and now they are on high, which is considered nominal by the manufacturer. I am not saying that on certain recordings the high end is always smooth, but it's way better than it was.

Sealed woofers are objectively better (Yes, objectively, not subjectively.)
    1) Ported bass has a sharp roll off. This roll off is unnatural to music.
    2) Sealed extent lower than ported, with more accurate roll off.
    And MOST importantly:
    3) GROUP DELAY
Port output varies over different frequencies, (spreading out response lines like a horses tail), providing a mash-up of incongruent responses. This sounds unnatural yes, but really messes with lower midrange often turning it into mudrange. Sealed provides consistent group delay and phase angle. And it most certainly is audible. Imaging and soundstage are superior. So is tonal accuracy. This is why the best efforts at true audio performance, like the B+W Nautilis, are sealed.
The SUBJECTIVE part comes in when space considerations and driver size are limited. Many people will be happier with a ported (AKA "Boom Box") design when the drivers are 4" or 5". However, 6" to 7" is really a transition point. 6 1/2" woofers can do very well sealed, providing people with a more subjective choice. Some people prefer the boosted low frequency curve of ported, and are willing to overlook group delay errors and frequency-dependant response smearing in the bass. At 8" it's really tending toward sealed, although there are very good ported designs here also. And at 10"-12" most people (speaker designers) consider it a design error NOT to consider a sealed enclosure.
There are always trade offs, and not all drivers are compliant for sealed boxes, so need the back pressure reduced. Some amplifiers do too. And ported may mate better to the midrange driver. But in general, a 3-way system with a large (8" or more) driver, will do better all around with a sealed configuration.
The exception to this being Transmission Lines. But TS are difficult to design (there's no simple computer program) and so are expensive, such that they are out of reach for most people. They do have better group delay and midrange than a ported, although not as good as sealed. The character of the bass is often subjectively better than the others. And they're not far behind sealed in actual acoustic performance. It's unfortunate more TS speakers aren't on market. This is one case where subjective preference may outweigh objective, and be quite satisfying.
But overall, i think you may be interested in reevaluating your sealed vs. ported bias. Many of the things you mentioned you liked are the direct result (or at least directly correlated) with sealed speakers. (We all have bias, it's not a criticism. I enjoy your videos, btw. Entertaining and honest).

@@johnm3544 My personal preference for subs is sealed or isobaric, push-pull. 2 drivers in opposition, so their rear wave cancels. No cone reflections from the backwave coming out through the speaker cone after a delay, being reflected off the box walls. This seems to get rid of a lot of problems, including some box coloration resonances.
Also, even 2 drivers wired in parallel in phase, on the same plane, has benefits: sealed woofers tend to have more excursion travel than ported, which may add distortion and take longer to get back to the starting position. Using 2 woofers cuts this excursion distance in half, so each driver moves half the distance, but the combined distance is the same. The result is generally lower distortion and faster response times. 2 woofers in a sealed enclosure may well beat 1 in a ported, (oftentimes even if the two drivers are individually less expensive than the one ported driver.)
But with subs, there is a rather limited frequency response, not many octaves covered. So there, a ported sub may not have the same drawbacks as ported woofers. If there is less spectrum, the group delay is less of an issue.
With active EQ like "servo woofers" (where the amp is doing a negative feedback cycle to bring undesirable cone movement under control), you could do ported or even open baffle. Sealed with driver excursion EQ is another option, but like many artificial changes to xmax of woofer travel, it can and does add distortion. There certainly are drawbacks to electronically extending the driver movements, however. It's not all roses, and many feel the trade-off isn't worth the gains provided good quality woofers are used. It may end up simply creating different problems, trading one set for another.
LDC-7 (loudspeaker design cookbook 7th edition) went into isobaric woofers a bit, as i recall. A second woofer inside the box that nobody sees is not exactly a selling point for most consumers, so that's going to be a DIY in many cases. 2x the drivers just to get a cleaner backwave and damp the reflections and cabinet vibrations, but you can't "see" the value in the sales brochure.
There are so many factors involved with matching subs to main channel speakers (many having to do with the speakers themselves), plus room gain and interactions, plus room EQ and DSP options... that i would hesitate to say one option is definitively "best" for subs.
I personally do prefer sealed subs, especially when adding them to sealed speakers. It's like a 1st order crossover in a way, because they have shallow roll off slopes compared to the sharp knee of ported. I find them easier to blend together. Personal preferences vary greatly, however, and the human hearing isn't so sensitive at 20Hz-40Hz as it is at 1500Hz-3000Hz: each is one octave in range, but it's a rather different result. 60Hz and up is human voice. Few people know male fundamental frequency can be 60Hz, but it can. Overtones at higher frequencies are more sensitive. My focus, therefore, would be getting the bass "right" from 60Hz up through midrange. However you can best blend your subs with your speakers into your room, after that, is probably best.
(I know that's not a much of a definitive answer, but it's getting into the "it depends" territory.)

Acoustic suspension speakers drop off smoothly in the bass region where ported versions drop like a stone. Also, the lowest bass energy in bass reflex speakers is “one note” port boom. If not tuned perfectly, it stinks. There is a reason why Edgar Vilchur and Henry Kloss made scads of money with the first mass produced acoustic suspension loudspeakers - Acoustic Research (AR). They made less distortion and had more real bass than the prevalent open baffle stuff then.

@@stingdragon17 Andrew Robinson reviewed the 3s. My take is that they are very much in the same vein as the Smaller Advent - strong bass, but needs to be placed more carefully than the 5. I’m starting to think I’d like a pair of Dynaco A25s. 🙂
As far as the 5s go, they are probably more like the original KLH 5 than the Advents. The latter had deeper bass than either the KLH 5 or 6. I owned both the KLH 6 and New Advent Loudspeaker. I loved them both madly.

WAAAIT the whole issue of box versus open baffle is room loading - and hey once you load the room IE run enough volume, lwith Cornwalls or Bozaks or JBLs, now your woofer being boxed IE baffled might be a help.
High end you need, time alignment IE placement (and as always choice of driver, crossover type & parts) and I imagine you do want baffle below a tweeter to avoid floor reflections.
Other question would be coaxial driver versus d'Appolito/mtm.

These must have a very special purpose built woofer because I have not found another 10" woofer designed for a sealed enclosure that can go as low as this one and still be 88db@ 1W/1M The closest I can get is about 44Hz in a 1.85 ft3 box.

Good day to you magical man, I loved the review by chance are you familiar with the awesome warranty that KLH puts behind their products? if my memory serves me right they’re the only speaker company that gives this long of a warranty.

I did call them when I thought the Cambridge CXN V2 fried one of the mid range drivers in my new model 5's... Electronic volume went ballistic, thought I blew the speakers. Got rid of that POS real quick. I called KLH for parts, was willing to purchase a new driver, turns out the driver was fine, but they still sent me one, no charge. And you get a real person on the other end of the line, I believe it was David I spoke with. He is in management, and it sounds like they run a real lean operation, he was there in Indiana. Real down to earth guy, we talked for a bit, very impressed.

Funny. No joke. I bought Teac Sierras that look the same, sealed cabinets. $400 a pair in 1988. Great sound, great imaging. And after 2 years played with a 70 watt tube amp, were ripped apart. You get what you pay for sometimes. I hope these are tougher. Miss those speakers. Rest in peace Teac.

It's a metal dome tweeter. Of course it's going to lean towards the hot sizzlie side. These bigger "box" style speakers do tend to only be as good as your amp. People tend to forget though, there is no true replacement for a large fat box with a large woofer. Done properly, you wont really ask for much more, if you are in that midrange "want great sound but don't need perfection" type of audiophile. I think the price is a bit much for these though. I had stuff similar back in the day for WAY less. I understand you sometimes get what you pay for but I think I could do better for that kind of money.

I grew up very blue collar in a working class rust belt city. RadioShack speakers were the best I could afford. I saved for my set of Linton’s and they were worth the wait. Slowly save up and buy a set of these or Lintons, and you’ll be rewarded with audio bliss for the rest of your life.

@@joanfrederick9176 I found a pair of Marantz SP1515 speakers that are awesome. Way better than anything I've ever owned. They are a touch warm but synergize well with my neutral class a/b preamp and amp and slightly bright dac. I have listened to high end systems and I love the sound. Is it 10% better than my sub $1000 system? No. 5%? Maybe.

I agree, at this price range they are pretty spectacular Monitor type floorstanding Sealed speakers. In terms of Width of Soundstage they should beat most Towerspeakers, especially all at that 2000 $ price range. In terms of clarity and Imaging and Depth of Soundstage, maybe the Triangle Borea Br09 do come close, they totally surprised me with how forward the Vocals came, pretty detail centered Speaker and very holographic just like the Model 5. They're just 1200 $ so half the price of the 5.
