Thousands of Hollywood writers have put down their pens in protest for weeks now to demand higher pay and a greater share of profits by major studios from the streaming boom. But with streamers having accumulated a huge library of K-dramas and Japanese anime, how much will the writers’ strike actually affect streaming giants?

This is why we need to strive together to change this

@@yuvalgabay1023 depend on the industry and how strong unions play a role in it. And I wouldn't underestimate the actor or writer guilds in Hollywood since past strikes there have been shown to be successfull in pressuring the studios to get what they want.
Paid poorly in ur country but for poor country that paid is very high
That is why I very glad live in poor country with my freelance skill 😎
I love how "surviveing the strike" just means not paying them what they deserve and waiting till this goes away.
These writers deserve to be suspended without pay for the garbage tier scripts they've been writing

Even before the writer's strike, I started watching more international shows on Netflix/streaming services. I just find them more entertaining, and the writing, storylines, and acting are much better. I'd say about 95% of shows I watch now are international (mainly Korean, Latin American, British, and Nigerian). I find that a lot of the writing on American shows is repetitive and has gone downhill in recent years (in exception for a few breakout shows).
That being said, the requests from the writers and SAG aren't excessive, I hope they could reach an agreement.
korean serial are quite top notch when given enough resource
Same I never watch much American movies nor series
Same here, I watch less than 2% of American shows on Netflix 🤷🏽♀️ Korean and Chinese have wonderful shows and movies, same with Latin countries and other places like Philippine, India, the international entertainment are better right now
Not much missed. Get more Asian writing in. They are better anyway
Same. Since subs to netflix in 2020 during lockdown pandemic, the korean content never disappointing me till this day. It just keep getting better.
Diversifying internationally has been the secret sauce for Netflix continuing to dominate the streaming game in spite the insane competition that has come over the past 5 years, even from trillion dollar companies. It's clear that they are the most consumer centric company in show business and it will continue to pay tremendous dividends long term.
It was long overdue that US companies started valuing international product. Hollywood is not the center of the universe and the entertainment industry will survive if it collapses, just like dumb decision making destroyed Detroit since the 80s doesn't mean there are no more cars now.
What the video fails to mention is the relative cost of their international investment vs US. 2.5 billion in Korea is literally nothing to what they spend on US shows, that's basically what they've spent on like their last 10 Netflix movies before we even discuss what they spend on anything else. Asian / Anime content are niche markets for Netflix with the preference for that content majority owned by domestic channels in those countries, that's a cultural aspect US companies consistently fail to replicate. It's nonsensical to believe they can run to Asia when the majority of their userbase is American and still dependent on Hollywood. Yes, it'll help them be more sustainable long term, No, they still need the writers and actors striking.
Besides the "solution" being to just wait it out, this doesn't help Asian (or any global) content. It just potentially means greater volume. Writers around the world face the same problems as US writers. So, greater content doesn't necessarily mean better ideas. The only viable solution is for studios - Asian, global or American - to give writers the support they need (ie, larger rooms to have more writers contribute to scripts, the ability to be part of all production, money to tide them over when they're not working, not replacing people with machines).
wow
Larger writers rooms are a problem. If five people can write a show, why should you need to pay a dozen? This is also why shows lack any kind of unified vision - the main writers keep switching every episode, so nothing ties everything together.
That's cute considering America has been censoring Japanese content and shaming people for complaining about it.
All the US networks did something similar during the last writers' strike. A bunch of Canadian shows were licensed to keep money coming in.
That's why Netflix bought and revived Trailer Park Boys, their best decision ever.
This whole situation remind me of 1970's USA , where due to strikes , steel industries were started shifting to Asia

News editors, "that looks like a cool looking knight costume".
People who watched Goblin Slayer, "..........."
These writers should also be protesting against investor interference too!
Yea I saw this coming the Asian media is already more popular overall then the few Hollywood shows/movies. Only Marvel does well these days and some few others. But this unfair payment is an issue in every industry so it would be so interesting if every industry refused the streaming giants. Cause really if Netflix and Hollywood really do start to rely on Asian writers for everything the same payment issues will come up eventually.
Japanese manga, Korean manhwa, Chinese manhua >>>>>>>>>> Marvel anyday

It's globalism in real time. Great idea to include Chinese and Korean programming. They are on par with anything from hollywood. Better content, storyline and cinema technology. Watch them the majority of the time.
Their content also fading
You lack an understanding of this issue. In Asia you don’t have unions to protect workers, the CEOs don’t care who does on Set, asian or Caucasian. The reason why we have unions in North America is because people have died at work and the unions fought for safety regulations, as well as food and a warm place to work at. None of this is being provided and on top of that people are being overworked and literally used in a game against the workers on a different continent. Change is never favourable towards the masses, what Netflix is doing is shady and it’s basically using Asian cinema to make money while people who fought so hard to be in union and have a safe place to work are no longer working. None of this is normal or acceptable. and unfortunately people like you will never know the dark side of the film industry unless you’re someone like me who has worked in film industry for decades.
Korean dramas better content? It’s not. I’m from Asia and I find Korean dramas boring and with cliche storylines. Apple TV series offers high quality plot than Netflix nowadays
@@sunsetfoxx That's nice, the same thing happened to American manufacturing and Hollywood said "learn to code lol"
Most of the things I watch are on RUclips or reruns of old movies, TV shows and documentaries. Nothing really interest me thats put out these days. I have a feeling a lot of people are like me. That's going to handicap these Hollywood writers when negotiating a new contract for more money.
The actors and maybe even directors are likely going on strike come July, so there's little work around the studios are going to be able to do about that.
why do people take anecdotes as proof of evidence??
I stopped watching mainstream entertainment years ago. These days i only watch amateur home vids, indy music makers, and old 90s and 2000s movies.Nothing that exists today interests me at all,as far as Hollywood is concerned or tv in general.
I like that Seung-Bak said, "production quality" because the script quality of many Korean Netflix productions has been criticized by the South Korean populace as a decline in content quality.
Really ? I'm new to Dramas and I have to say that Netflix Korean productions is the reason why I'm obsessed with K-dramas now. I always thought they were weird and boring before I watched Squid games on Netflix. Now, I've watched 12 K-dramas and all of those are from Netflix and I loved them so much.
@@lawtraf8008 You're looking at it from a non-Korean perspective, possibly (weird and boring).
@@lawtraf8008 You're probably looking at things from a non-Korean perspective. Korean critics are noting how Netflix productions follow popular plotlines and expectations, but not scripts that challenge the audience and the art. They worry that investment in such content means writers stop writing quality scripts that appeal to Koreans but not necessarily non-Korean audiences. By the way, the K-dramas you watch on Netflix are not necessarily produced by Netflix. Netflix traditionally buys streaming licenses of already-popular content from other countries. One of my favorites was Angry Mom and one I heard mentioned a lot, Because This Is My First Life, was not Netflix-produced content. There were cool Korean dramas before Netflix was on the scene 😉 which ones did you find weird and boring?
Korean series plot were cliche and boring. This is the very reason why I switched to Apple TV because Apple TV offers high quality original series with great plot. Netflix nowadays are full of Korean dramas with almost all the same storylines
I might be misunderstanding the problem in Hollywood, but the CEOs from the Hollywood studios should be alarmed of streaming services filling the gap with overseas production. They are going to loose share of the market if they prolong the strike. It’s sad that greed makes you loose sight of the bigger picture.
i agree they should be alarmed, but the problem is not that actors are not paid on the networks etc. It is pay from streaming, so unless streaming anties up then ther is the problem. The fact is actors are paid by a few networks 3-5 for residuals, but there are almost 3 times as many streaming networks who are splitting the pie. If they can consolidate (Hulu, Disney, ESPN+ It will help out. Their is money in streaming that is divided by at least 10 networks. (Disney, Hulu, Paramount+, Netflix, HBO, Max, Peacock, Bravo, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video etc ). Streaming is a big pie, but actors only get paid by one who is competing against the other 10.
Which major studio does not own a streaming service? I just want to know which ones should be alarmed.

I feel bad for American Writers. I see the main difference is the reading culture between East and West cultures.
Thousands of Anime are adaptations of Author's work. So some authors gain a lot of fame and income due to recognition from their books first. This includes Anime directors, animators, manga, and Light Novels.
I can hardly remember any American writers or Comic Book writers. For years, reading culture in the West was boring and treated as a chore. Compared to Manga, Comic books were so hard to read because it was colored, too bright, and a lot of bland story telling. And word books had too many metaphors and patronizing stories. Not saying I hate Comic Books, just in comparison to Manga.
You really overestimated manga, light novels & anime creators, writers, animators etc. who've worked in that industry. In Japan, creatives there too face the same lack of amount of income from their work as their US counterparts, and are exploited by their studios. A lot of them are overworked, burned out, underpaid and face some really terrible physical & mental health issues. They don't get to enjoy their income just like the US creatives, nor they do get to have breaks. These isn't some "starving artist" situation, these are the real issues faced by Japanese animators. Unfortunately for them, for now, there are no means to create unions for creators, animators, writers, etc in Japan, so they can't fight back against the anime industry's own problems.
comic book author is popular in America as well. The Late mr Stan Lee just to name a few.

I see a ton of comments about hollywood "low quality writing" lately and how its all because of "woke" ....thats not really the reason (even though those with an agenda say it) ... the real reason for the lack of recent quality in writing comes right back to the reason for the strike.... Hollywood / studio executives cutting too many corners / hollowing out the writing & creative teams and expecting all of us consumers of said content not to notice their cheapness ... been slowly happening for over 10 years now
Finally, someone talking sense
When Hollywood writers admit that alot of their writing is agenda driven instead of fun. You can't say that doesn't have a negative impact on their writing

Bad news for WGA, other regions produce TV shows too. K-Drama even have better story than American TV shows. Not to mention bollywood, British TV shows, etc. Netflix can and will wait this strike out.
This is what I've seen when the strike first happened. Netflix got global resource, so the US strike impacted them nothing. Yet, not the same thing for other streaming services that based its writing in US. So, yeah, the next phase would be either who could hold on longer, the streaming that will put out all its older library or the writers.
I think it's better for Netflix to distance itself from Hollywood, and activists, after what Jada Pinkett-Smith did with Cleopatra, on the other hand here's the thing with with Netflix Korean and Japan, they work on a tight budget production, and that is just a fraction compared to Hollywood production budget

Decline in quality
Oof finally Hollywood got slapped in the face when they are forced to compete with the world in term of quality. Not only that their recent works mediocre and it worsen with Netflix funding the world for more quality and original works.
The appetite is NOT for Korean language, that would make no sense, but for Korean content and storytelling. I live in Italy and watch all Korean series in English, dubbed. Same for polish and Scandinavian movies and series. I watch it English and if English is not available I watch it in Italian , also dubbed. My viewing experience therefore doesn't change much (as it would if I were to read subtitles whilst watching movies. The beauty of Netflix is that you decide for yourself how you watch content.
I think its a supply and demand thing. I think its not just writers but it applies to all other profession and business.
Ugh I hated dramafever when it came out. All those tv shows were free and free to access before them
quoting the iconic Janelle Monáe and her song Q.U.E.E.N. ..."They keep us underground working hard for the greedy, but when it's time to pay they turn around and call us needy"...the American entertainment industries is a sweatshop for the creative person, whether be writing, illustration, designing, editing, etc.
I have just deactivated my netflix account. First I was being charged for sharing account with my relatives. Second, not many show to watch on Netflix now. Byeeee
I hope all the American writers are fired. They’ve sapped all the entertainment value from their shows and have made them so politicized that it’s a chore to watch. They’ve brought this upon themselves and now they’ll have to face the consequences.
There are millions of people who can do their jobs better and for cheaper, and they’ll be replaced.
The issue with this is that the counter culture is just as bad because they throw their vision in the completely opposite direction. They are both extremes and I think it will take time to find a happy medium again.

While I understand the writers’ frustration in not being fairly paid for their work, they also need to realise that their overall quality as a group has been declining compared to the writers from other countries. Hopefully this forces Hollywood to finally lift their game to the level that the global audience expects.
From everything the WGA has said recently, they are completely blind to that issue.
I thought I wouldn't find this kind of comment here. Like it's hard to feel bad when the work they ha e to show for is shallow and sub par, it's even detrimented whole franchises.
@@pheunithpsychic-watertype9881 Most writers don't even want to write for existing franchises, but it's all the studios care about. To paraphrase the creator of Powerpuff Girls when asked why he decided to go back to the franchise, he said along the lines of "I pitched 16 new original ideas to the studios, and they were all rejected."
Plus studios cut tons of corners when coming up with scripts. Sometimes the creator who came up with the storyline outline isn't even involved in the actual scripting process and they just hire cheap newbies to do that while simultaneously making sure the scripts are rushed within a time frame so they pay as little for the scripts as possible. Then there's reports they're not even having writers on set anymore either to provide necessary rewrites.
