I’m honestly wondering what will happen to her after the Phantom Racer Arc. She’s definitely going to lose confidence in herself when she realizes she was duped and basically turned against her comrades, not to mention when she realizes her own team didn’t trust her with the truth. This is going to be a hit to her morale and it could take an adventure or two to rebuild her confidence in herself.
I'm gonna call it, she will go missing on the final fight page and the next thing we will see is a note on jewels desk, leaving a dear Jhon letter feels perfect, maybe sonic will find her and they will chat but it will end with he'd saying she hates him, this will then either lead to him leaving her or convincing her to come back to "keep him in check".
she doesn't feel like she can help out as much anymore. she's become disillusioned because of the things that happened to the point she got duped by Mimic and Tangle and Whisper couldn't trust her due to this. also she could've done things differently if she just listened to Silver, cuz he's obviously more trustworthy than Mimic as Duo
@@tristankawatsuma8962 the really hurtful thing is how much Tangle and Whisper kept from her, more than Sonic is The Phantom Rider, they kept evidence of the second Phantom Rider from her, and the fact that Clutch was threatening the Restoration and Jewel from her. That Second one by itself more or less spells the death of the Diamond Cutters as a team and the success of Mimic. And it shows that Whisper really never knew how Mimic operates. She just knew he could shapeshift. Because to an outside observer his trucks are obvious, but apparently to her the idea that he might want to isolate major members of the team and play head games with them hasn't occurred to Whisper. Like he's pulling toxic social saboteur 101 and Whisper is walking right into it rather than like someone who expects it and who should have seen it in action multiple times in the past. And my guess is that Mimic and Whisper probably have very different memories of their times in the OG Diamond Cutters.
A nap She should take a nap after this. Maybe a joint training arc with team dark. The dimond cutters could benefit from their experience, and shadow can practice working with others.
@@cooltiger2439 I'm worried because the team did tell her Clutch is threatening Jewel. They cut her out from Vital time sensitive info about someone actively threatening the Restoration, which cue the flashback to why she formed the Diamond Cutters. Mimic has done a better job destroying the current Diamond Cutters than he knows. We're going to need a cop out BS, or a good reconciliation scene between the team before she can even start the recovery and training process.
Personally, I don't dislike her or her personality, quite the opposite. I think out of all the IDW original hero characters, Lanolin is the one I can talk about the most. But I'm not going to lie, as one of the least experienced members, I really do interpret her unwillingness to back down and soldier mentality, quite arrogant considering characters like Silver have far more accolades, are known restoration allies and have been in this line of work way longer than she has. She's a leader, sure but she has less experience than everyone else on the team. It's like a math teacher trying to lecture a mathematician in my eyes.
@@somepenguin508 problem with Silver is that as a time traveler, most his accomplishments technically don't exist, or are not widely known. Even his part in the metal virus he was entirely overshadowed by Sonic at the end there with everyone going on and on about Sonic and no one highlighting what Silver did. Then ofc 06' is a closed time loop, and then he both went against Sonic and played a minor role in Rivals...only to have his time messed with by the time eater. And based off Murder of Sonic the hedgehog, it really seems like months/years into the future from the current IDW comics no one knows much, or at all about Sonic's friends. I mean how the heck does the conductor and PC not know about Amy, Knuckles and Tails but know about Sonic? To the point that the PC think via a Sonic Gameboy game in his head, yet doesn't know/respect the talents and abilities of Sonic's friends.
@codyraugh6599 What about everything he has done in the comics and in forces? At the very least, All of what silver did in the comics (neo metal, metal virus, deadly 6, super silver sucking all the virus away) still amounts to more experience that she would have been privy to if she was as involved in the restoration efforts as much as the comics imply that she was. Yes he is a time traveler. But he still spends alot of time within the idw timeline. And the whole thing about sonic overshadowing silver, I don't buy, everyone praises Amy, the chaotix, Belle, tangle, whisper (she's more covert and people know about her). How wouldn't they know about silver and his efforts? Silver's time-traveling is not the problem. It's the writing characterizing Lanolin to be as experienced as sonic, silver, Amy, and everyone else who has been at this for way longer and she doesn't deserve it yet.
@@justmadgamers9724 again, neo-metal is pre-restoration and virtually everyone was infected by the time Silver went super, and again post that no one mentions silver and focuses solely on Sonic's part. Also this is the universe where getting even basic information from people is like pulling teeth. Somehow the Conductor and PC in MoStH, a cannon and yet to happen game to everything, didn't know who Vector and Sonic's friends including Shadow all were and what they have done. And despite the Chaotixs saying they would, Jewel never learned who Clutch was from them, meaning that even with the intent to inform the restoration the Chaotixs still refused to share pertinent information with the Restoration. Summery no one tells anyone anything in this universe. And every Silver appearance where he's been the world saving hero, well he's more or less concealed or off screen. No one remembers their time as a zombot they just know Sonic turned into golden light and sucked the virus away, and why do they know it's Sonic, because no one would shut up about Sonic at the immediate time and they are all standing there hearing "Sonic, Sonic, Sonic." That's what it means to be overshadowed by someone else, despite everything you do, no one recognizes what you've done. And while Silver has occasionally helped the Restoration per his own words, Duo became a permanent member of the Diamond Cutters. Silver still got the short end of a shit stick, but the whole "but he wasn't trying to kill Duo" excuse also falls short, he grabbed a guy by the ankle and tried to throw him at the ground from several stories up. That doesn't look good at the moment, especially when you have no evidence of wrong doing from the person and even less evidence you weren't just trying to kill them. The only moment Lanolin and Silver legit worked together was Eggman's Eggperial city and she was never around to actually see him doing anything at that time limiting what she saw to Shadow and Sonic. The only real failure of Lanolin is her lack of follow through, but then again she's following Jewel and Jewel's leadership can be summarized by that panel where the fighting was happening right outside her door but she didn't notice because she had headphones on. She and Lanolin are just blind to ongoing events, and the people who should be sharing information with them are blatantly NOT.... Especially the Chaotixs, seriously they even said they were going to warn the Restoration about Clutch and didn't and even stated that they were going to call Jewel directly, and clearly they didn't.
@codyraugh6599 I will agree to disagree. But let's say that I concede on your point that Lanolin is not as knowledgeable to the going-ons of all of the heroes (even though as the leader of a military force, she should have knowledge of important records). Why did take duo's side when silver brings it up and whisper, the one who has the most knowledge of mimic, corroborates silver's finding. Duo is the newbie. No accolades, no real prior experience. She doesn't really even vet this guy. And the moment things go sideways in there first training, despite silver speaking up about duo ditching him, she take duos side, no questions? Hell, tbf everyone is on stupid pills here. Whisper saw Duo kick silver which means her device would have recorded it. Tangle knows whispers history with mimic so she could have talked with her when she confronts Duo. Lanolin, given her lack of experience in the field, should not be a military leader here and everyone in the DC voted for her ! She is determined and selfless. But she's also ignorant and naive. If she is truly not privy to any of the other heroes, then she has no business being the leader of any military force.
One could argue her coming to duo’s defense post avalanche was her trying to de-escalate the situation. Duo’s new, he’s gonna make mistakes. (Plus she’s the leader, if anything, ripping into him for fucking up is her job, not silvers) Plus, as far as she’s concerned, silver did literally endanger everyone’s lives, so she kind of has a right to be a little harder on him. You could also make the argument it’s unfair for duo to get off Scott free despite “abandoning silver” which is fair I think he also should’ve gotten at least some kind of talking to, for his cowardice. But also I feel like (for anyone that wasn’t mimic) getting called a coward by an experienced hero is punishment enough.
Sometimes you have to. Also it really didn’t help that Whisper was going to extremely hurt and or kill “Duo” to prove she’s right which isn’t going to fly in normal investigations unless you extreamlu lucky and sure which Mimic got them questioning themselves.
I do think that Lanolin was right in defending Duo. There was no proof about him being Mimic and all the lies he said can be pushed off as rookie mistakes. But, Lanolin should still have looked more into Duo when told of the possibility of him being Mimic. Mimic is a shapeshifter who murdered his old team without a second thought, and you don't have anything as proof as to Duo's background, just Duo saying it. With a potential shapeshifter among you, you need to be cautious of it and learn more about Duo before making that assumption, but she doesn't at all. An example of something similar was in Young Justice, Aqualad was told by a villain that they have a mole among them. Aqualad didn't believe it, but still investigated the possibility of there being a mole. He did what he thought was best and wanted to be certain that there wasn't a mole that could endanger all of them. I am not mad that Lanolin is getting tricked or of her more by the rules mindset, I am mad that she went from listening to people with more experience and knowledge to pushing them away and getting mad when others try and tell her something she either doesn't think is right without proof. She learned that life isn't all nice and that sometimes you need to act, that following the rules and playing it safe isn't the best action at times. And when she is later faced with anything that goes against "By the Rules", she acts arrogantly and is angered. Plus, she trusts Duo over Tangle and Whisper. She was shown growth and immediately 180 and went spiraling downhill.
The problem with Lanolin is the fact that she is to easily trusting and poorly handled the concerns of her more experienced teammates. during the Duo situation Silver who is has more experience and Whisper, who knows Mimic better than anyone both tell her that Duo is a spy she doesn't even consider investigating him. instead she attacks whisper and then afterwards lectures silver about responsibility and isolates him while he is at the lowest point in his life is both incredibly arrogant and disgusting to do to a person who is just trying to help. it makes sense that Whisper and Tangle don't trust her with the information regarding the phantom rider. they watched their new, inexperinced boss make a bad call and handle the situation in the worst way possible. I just hope Sonic and friends call her out on it an make her grow from this.
Expect everyone was convinced and agreed to let Duo joined and he had managed to show he wasn’t a threat. Experience doesn’t mean do what I say and you have no value to argue about it. Lanolin wasn’t wrong in asking for proof and answer but Silver and Lanolin pushed to hard that only gave Mimic the perfect opportunity to get his character a perfect standing and make the experience heroes question their reasoning. You also have Jewels questioning their reasoning which in the end got Whisper to doubt herself and got Silver in trouble.
@@justynhill4814 But she knows them. The fact that silver mentioned such a specific detail without ever having seen mimic should be enough to atleast warrant looking into, plus her knowing of whispers past adds to that combined witht he fact they are currently dealing with enemies who want them gone. She should not be trusting strangers just so the plot can move.
@@Algera96- she wanted to believe them but Whisper pressed too hard and how they went about it wasn’t the best way. Like they literally pushed Duo off the railing until Lanolin caught him in time. Like I understand Whisper wanting revenge but she shouldn’t have been that aggressive it only gave Mimic more leverage.
The question here is... who tf though give to a new member nothing experienced and probably one of the most weakest characters of IDW the leader role was a great idea??? They even include Duo to the MAIN heroes team without, i don't know, ask him about his past life, test his combat skills, how experienced he was, but no, he only has to be light hearted and said that he wants to be a hero and BAM, you can accompany to powerful heroes into dangerous adventures that can even cost your life. We never saw Lanolin training or something like that, all that we saw of her was just being an anxious sheep who only could pilot and give important information to the heroes and that's all. Man how much I wished Knuck be there, see to Lanolin, and that he said to her "shut the fuck up you are recently here in these adventures and you want to be the max authority from us? You can't even defeat a big robot by yourself. Heck even Sonic has difficulties to do that sometimes. So get out of the way". Seriously that kind of inconsistency writing in the comics is what makes me hard to continue reading them.
@@criticalbuddy524- because Tangle isn’t exactly focused and can easily lose it, Whisper clearly stated that she doesn’t want that responsibility and Lanolin was chosen by those two for her level headed nature. All leaders are inexperienced no matter because you get a new team and need to understand each other. She’s a good leader stand firm doesn’t back down and neutral until she hears both cases. Combat wise she matches Whisper but lacks self confidence as she fears failure of any kind. Even experienced leaders aren’t perfect, Vector when he gets blinded by greed, Knuckles in forces, Eggman when he constantly loses and Shadow when he tries to do everything himself and so on. She’s not bad just isn’t as flexible as she should be. Also they literally asked Duo questions and even if there were screening test or background checks Both him and Clutch would already have fake documents ready. One more thing Knuckles wouldn’t have any experience with Mimic and do the same as Lanolin and ask for proof from Whisper as well. All the heroes besides Silver at that moment would ask her if she has evidence of a way to tell of Duo was Mimic. If Whisper was a lot more calmer Lanolin would have listened but she was losing her cool and plan involved with harming Duo to revealing himself along with that she was giving ready to kill vibes which she showed during her fight with Surge.
You know, your video has made me see Lanolin with a different perspective. Of course, the way she scolded Silver was uncalled for (and I still hold a grudge for that) but we (the audience) need to remember that the characters themselves won't see the things that we do. We know that Duo is actually Mimic and that Silver is innocent, but in retrospect, these are the same set of circumstances that happened during Silver's debut back in 06. Back then, Silver wanted to save the future by any means necessary, and was tricked by Mephiles into killing Sonic. When he learned the truth, he changed his ways and managed to save the future. So yeah, Lanolin is going through the same character development as Silver, and she (hopefully) will learn the truth and change her ways.
I think there are other instances of Sliver getting trigger happy as well. And when you add in that the IDW team has a lot of former Archie members, it makes even more sense. Archie Sliver showing up and yelling traitor before attacking someone at random was super common. The writers may have assumed that this would seem ironic given how the character was previously portrayed.
i think thats part of the problem though, the fact the audience knows before the characters is partly what makes it frustrating, but also, how the characters are dumbed down to make a subterfuge villain work, idiotballing as they say, and it's not just lanolin issue 64 made all the cutters idiots so they could write silver out and keep mimic's facade going.
I do feel that Lanolin's creator, Adam Bryce Thomas, has pushed the idea that Lanolin isn't mentally well. Most of Lanolin's artwork, including her concept art, showing her with heavy bags under her eyes and irritated expressions. In one unoffical comics made by Adam Bryce Thomas show that Lanolin may harbor resentment towards Sonic for having so much gifted power and not using it to put an end to Eggman for good. She even struggling with intrusive thoughs of attacking Sonic with her wispon in the same comic.
The problem is that IDW Eggman is identical to Archie Eggman, who was the genocidal dictator that needs to be killed. He's nothing like his game counterpart.
@@cristianrojas9684 That is my biggest gripe with the comic; let me clarify I ADORE that Eggman is a genuine threat and not the overused buffoon Sega has let him degrade into. The only problem is; this makes Sonic's attitude about how to deal with him, very, VERY poor. In a way I can sympathize with Lanolin's mindset of being annoyed that Sonic could properly deal with Eggman. He doesn't even need to kill him, but he has missed MANY opportunities to outright knock him out and get him locked away. Honestly if SatAM or Archie-Sonic met their game and IDW counterparts, they'd be honestly livid at how nonchalant Game and IDW Sonic can be, especially towards IDW Eggman whose Metal Virus brought everything to the brink even worse than usual, and his lack of CARING if he doomed the whole planet was so calleous, *I* would have double-tapped him after we got what we needed from him to end the Metal Virus threat. I get the writing team have to play the characters closer to the game's in terms of personality with some wiggle-room, and they can't just get rid of Eggman; but Sonic's 'be free and come to your senses of your own accord' attitude is in this case, toxic because he's letting people he should be putting out and into prison at minimum, instead of hoping they'll come around. So in many ways, that fan-comic by Adam Bryce Thomas is rather appropo, even if it also hints Lanolin may have a complex of some kind or mental instabilty. Given he did some art regarding Lanolin having a Karen-Mother, I wouldn't be surprised if the poor gal had issues.
@@cristianrojas9684 I agree; it's one thing I DON'T like about Ian Flynn's writing. Still, what happened at the end of Issue 61 is as satisfyingly dead as he's ever gonna get. He WAS, after all, left CREATIVELY dead for a while; that's the single best thing that could have happened for Sonic's world without Eggman dying. It's like room to breath.
I actually like the character it's just that most it felt weird she put her trust in others rather than question certain individuals like Duo being too perfect or know that silver is a devoted restoration ally and if he was saying something off. meanwhile she should have saw something was odd with tails gear since he was known for being precise. so if his extreme gear acted odd it should've been a red flag for being sabotaged and voiced that she'll look it to it.
True, but the jump to "she's evil and horrible" by a bunch of people (who among them have a clear faction who just hate her because she reminds them of Sally Acorn) is stupid, and honestly following the Sonic games despite Sonic supposedly being famous, the lack of knowledge from people almost makes it seem like he and his friends are virtually unknown. Heck Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog the Player character and the conductor don't seem to know much about Sonic, and next to nothing about his friends.
@@mr.unsmiley8656 the Sally parallel was due to headstrong lady leader, who built her own freedom fighter. despite greeting sonic she spends less time fighting by his side.
Lanolin has one of the best IDW Sonic comic designs in the series and I love her for that, my problem however stems from how her rise to becoming a hero is insignificant compared to the characters that have experience, yet she would rather put her trust in others like she has the experience and knowledge of someone like sonic to make decisions like that, the tipping point for me was how she was talking down to silver when his responsibilities in being a hero extend beyond time, he has been a hero way longer than her, has experienced a ruined future and has actively taken a front line position to prevent that, meanwhile on her first mission as a leader of a unit she crumbled at the first sign of trouble.
I really don't get the appeal. She's plainly dressed; her hair is excessive, her bust isn't nearly as big as people claim it is, and her 24/7 hateful scowl betrays her ugly, friendless, arrogant attitude.
Adam himself makes it clear that her smiles early on are fake, looks like Lanolin has been very stressed lately, so she not miss sunshine along with the cast , there's even stretches of her not liking the hero Sonic how he does things that is justice to him , she is surrounded by OP characters who they can end Eggman in anytime and she frustrated that she part of it and not mention she just a originally sheep girl with a bell for a weapon, it makes me understand what she coming from that she the underdog of the series, Lanolin is not my favorite character am not a big fan of disrespecting the same heros that save her life she is an interesting character, A lot of others say she is similar to Dr.Starline who also admires someone who he looks up to but is disappointed by the results, looks like she's gonna do the same thing with Sonic, I think it is coming soon in future issues, if she leaves the restoration people are wondering if she will meet with Shadow who also disagrees with Sonic's heroism I was worried they'll make her a simple bossy sheep girl as a comedy relief or something I am glad they didn't do that, am curious what type of character development that she will have
I guess we can all thank Mr Thomas for how much he loves his creations and how he goes with making Lanolin more sympathetic and having her let her feelings out. he's basically a light mirror version of Ken Penders.
If Shadow actually flipping shows up bro literally just disappeared and has no idea what the heck is going on bro doesn’t even know people like Surge and stuff exist
It’s a good thing she has negative traits and flaws, I love the IdW characters for having complex personalities and aspects of them that make you not like them. That always leaves room for character development and to see these heroes/villains change. I’ll admit the Lano listening to mimic over Silver thing was definitely plot abuse and simply done to make the story work.. but I’d also argue that in the military you never doubt your allies, EVER. Unspoken rule, you have your teammates back until the end of service. If they are suspected of something we will deal with it professionally, the problem is Silver is crazy strong and Duo/Mimic gaslighted the situation. It honestly just looks bad for Silver. I think a younger audience is reading these comics because the writers definitely intend for you as the viewer to get mad and angry that Lano isn’t noticing such “obvious’ things😅 it’s obvious to us, not to her. It’s like knowing an evil secret and conspiracy but no one in power will listen to you. That’s storytelling.. good. Get mad. That’s the point. The problem is I feel the younger audience is bashing Lano personally which is taking this plot a stretch too seriously or far. Take the walking dead as an example: It’s common knowledge ratings dropped after Negan killed Glen and Abraham, this reaction is fine on its own right but if you’re refusing to watch the show and calling the creators ideas the plot trash that’s a problem. You cant hate how Negans written for killing Glen, that’s his character and desired reaction for what he did. You shouldn’t hate him personally and say he’s poorly written because he disrespected a main character, that was the point of his character.. to show the Main cast that they’re weak compared to him. Another example is The Last of Us 2: Everyone hated Abby and insulted the actual actor. They even did very sickly and extreme things to the developers team for making Abby (a video game character) kill Joel. These people stopped playing the game and called the writing trash and refused to see the whole story through, and even if they did they said it was poor and trying to redeem Abby for killing their beloved Joel. YES. That was the point, of course. The whole plot was literally to show you can’t just do whatever you want and expect no consequences. Joel may be nice to Ellie but he was a monster to those people in the hospital. It’s simply a different perspective from the characters we’re used too. All that being said; I personally never had any issue with Lanolin at all. I still like her character and design and enjoy the complexity of her personality. She has flaws and that’s great for a Sonic character as most don’t show any of them because Sega thinks Sonic is for kids and children don’t understand people have bad moments or problematic aspects of themselves(cough cough Maria gets shot💀). Let Lanolin grow as a character and make mistakes, in Sonic’s medium we don’t get a lot of character development as is. There’s nothing wrong with having these idw characters show a little complexity. If I was in Lanolin’s boots I’d be mad at Sonic too for his methods and not stopping eggman for good. I’d try to standout as a leader since I’m pretty lackluster in combat compared to the main cast, most of all I’d let these things get in my own head and worry I’m too bossy when I’m just trying to prove myself but always feel like I’m doing everything wrong when people who are care free disagree with me.. That’s exactly what Lanolin is. A sheep trying to play the role of a shepherd.. and she’s new to this job just as much as she’s new to this cast of characters, cut her some slack and give her break
a Lanolin centric video!!? don't mind if i do one thing i know few people notice already is Lanolin is very similar to Starline in many way, they were inspired by two respective people Starline with Eggman, Lanolin with Sonic. Staline was so inspired by Eggman's intelligence, charisma and his strong sense of world domination that he wants to rule the world alongside him as his rifht hand man his equal but when he actually get to know Eggman up close and how he truly operates Starline grew disappointed and frustrated at how the mad doctor do about defeating the heroes that he tries to fix how it should be done by deciding to overthrow Eggman and take over his empire and begin his own plan of world domination and history repeats itself with Lanolin after being inspired by Sonic's heroism leading to her joining the resteration in hopes of making the world a better place and be something more than just a helpless bystander but overtime just like Starline, Lanolin grew disappointed and frustrated in secret upon seeing how the restoration only focuses on making humanitarian efforts instead of making plans to defeat the villains head on and ending them for good that when she rises up the ranks, she purposes many ideas to improve the restoration and attempts to militarized it, i think what's interesting is her perception and relationship with Sonic in general since he was her hero and she looks up to him but when meeting him in person and seeing how his methods of defeating Eggman make her slightly resent him leaving her jaded at this realization because as far as she remembers she thought there always something keeping him from ending Eggman for good but when she finds out he just decides not to, she thinks back to all the times Eggman terrorize many parts of the world and damage he had done as well the carnage that is Sonic saving the world resulting in more damage than before and seeing how reckless his actions were which is why she always be prepared with plan instead of reckless going into battle when fighting and her words backfires on her in the lastest arc where she disregard people's safety when she attempts to capture the Phantom Rider as well her underestimating her friends and teammates experience as heroes and being dismissive towards their warnings about the potential enemy spy in the group leading to her unintentionally jeopardize the whole restoration and indirectly helps the villains succeed in their plan of world domination and her going by book authoritarian mentality is blinding her to point she's being manipulated by the villains to turn against the heroes and from figuring things out by herself, i hated Lanolin when i first read the idw comics but overtime after growing passed my hatred towards her i gained a new appreciation for her as a character
She didn’t disregard people safety it was an accident on her part because she wasn’t paying attention to her environment. The moment she realized it and tried to tell her group to pull back it was too late and she was in shock of what happened.
I never hated Lanolin, she just takes her job to seriously and over protective. She tries way too hard to not feel weak ever since the Badnik horde attack on her home town in Issue 2. She still has a lot to learn so it’s way too early to hate her. I thinks she’s alright in my book.
They slowly built up her confidence, but she hasn't had a true moment when everything is ruined and leadership is actually questioned, so that rising confidence hasn't truly been checked. And I'm all here for it, to see what breaks the leader. Good stuff to watch. Just think people are mad because we can have the reader omniscience, knowing what's going on and irritated when characters do not.
@@ProtossTempest She had plenty of ways of finding out, no excuse for believing a stranger over her allies, and no excuse for brutalizing those allies for no good reason.
Here before Iggy pfp guy shows up, Lanolin reminds me of early Comics Tony Stark, she's a character who's humanitarian side is outweighed by her desire to protect the innocent, even if in turn its that lack of care that can cause distress and problems for her, it's a genuinely interesting dynamic for a Sonic character, someone who's so certain of her plans being successful, that deviation seems to stab her in the heart.
Also I like how she tries to follow protocol, without knowing she is hurting and making her comrades distrust her, we can see that in issue 73, and in issue 71 when Tangle and Whisper decide to not tell her about Sonic being the phantom rider. I'm still getting used to her character but I'd say she's fine.
@PolkaDotAfroCircus06 the main cast is essentially a bunch of super powered freaks who do this shit for fun, Lanolin just wants Eggman gone permanently
@@Angninjin22 they also didn't tell her that Clutch was threatening Jewel. That's got to hurt FAAAAAR more than the Sonic thing, like the Sonic but could be excused, but the Jewel bit is just going to be twisting that knife and doing Mimic's job for him.
@@videogollumer riiiiiight, and Whisper, Tangle, and the Chaotixs didn't by being absolute morons. And doing the exact opposite of things they said they'd do, thus endangering everyone. If a certain croc had just called Jewel like he said he would, then none of this would be happening. And if Whisper knew Mimic even a fraction as well as she pretends with her arrogant attitude from the Tangle and Whisper series then she would have had evidence rather than suffering a mental break down when asked for evidence, you know the bare minimum anyone would want when accusing someone of treason and effectively performing a public execution.
People hated Lanolin because she was biased handling Duo's accusations. Its good that she trusts Duo but she should also trust Silver and Whisper. Lanolin's inability to recognize that something is causing Silver and Whisper to act this way towards Duo is what makes her a bad leader and a justified reason to hate on her. Why doesn't she investigate Silver and Whisper's suspicions? She shuts it down instead of allowing Silver and Whisper to prove their accusations. If by any chance Silver and Whisper are wrong (and we know they're right), the conflict within the team would be acknowledge for all parties involved allowing natural resolution. But Lanolin doesn't do this and does not explain her reasoning why.
Yeah, like, every team that found out that the phantom rider was sonic instantly knew something was up and that sonic was after a bad guy, even nite and don did, while lanolin was not able to pick up something was wrong when their training section went super wrong and when whisper and silver were after duo.
EXACTLY! Even if a plaintiff or defendant acts out of order during a trial and is removed from court, the trial still continues! They don't just abandon it like Lanolin did!
Exactly, I really hate this trope it's even worse when you found out that the author had to apparently make it so that Whisper doesn’t record any of her missions anymore.
She does the exact opposite though? She doesn't shut it down at all, she's openly stopping an merely ACCUSED member of her team of LITERALLY BEING ATTACKED, any GOOD leader would prevent that, people are getting so angry over something only THEY know, and forgot that Lanolin doesn't know what they know.
The thing with Lanolin is that while she may have the best of intentions and had a really great origin story and lead up. Her problem is she’s become too hung up on rules and regulations instead of trusting her team and her heart. Nothing wrong with being the voice of reason in a group of wild cards. But rules and regulations is never how Sonic and company play. So she really needs to let go and try and go with the current than agents it. Gotta believe though that Duo brought the worst version of Lanolin though. I can respect her wanting to stand up for the new guy. But she’s hardly known Duo long enough to have a cup of coffee with him. Meanwhile Silver is a longtime friend to Sonic and the gang. And she completely Disregard Whispers concern’s about Mimmic a known shapeshifter infiltrating there group. You’d think I’d both those people are having concerns then there words would have more weight to them. Instead she boots silver, has wisper second guessing herself, and put tangle on the spot against silver. Yeah just trying to beat the ink out of a transformed Mimmic without any hard proof is not the best way to go. But there were also better ways to go about it. Recent Lanolin just seems to have lost the trust in her friends and heart that made her endearing.
Pfft! Most of Sonic's friends aren't even wild cards to begin with. The only ones who are Chaotic are Sonic and Tangle, who are Chaotic Good, and Omega, who is Chaotic Neutral. The others are either Lawful or Neutral between Law and Chaos. Knuckles, Vector, Espio, Cream, Gemerl, Blaze, and Jewel are all Lawful Good; Tails, Amy, Charmy, Big, Silver, Whisper, and Belle are all Neutral Good; and Shadow and Rouge are both True Neutral.
I think the only reason people hate her is because we haven’t had a humanizing moment for her yet. It’s like Adam Malkovich in Metroid Other M. I think just adding a panel or two of her crying or being sad that Silver was voted out alone would really help show that she didn’t want to kick him out and that she sees him as a friend.
Exactly! She shows no regret! She doesn't question herself! The closest we got was when she was all "Oh crap!" when she and Clutch's Buckos broke the race track and almost got a bunch of innocent people killed; but then, in the very next issue, she's back to being all "Grrrr! Smash!" again! This shows she blames the Phantom Rider for HER screw up! What size pickax is NEEDED to crack through that stony heart of hers?!
@@videogollumer I can already see it now, lanolin will become an anti-villain/antagonist after not only realizing sonic was the phantom rider, but also duo turning out to be mimic and tangle & whisper not trusting her with the revelations they found out. Even though it's lanolin's fault for not listening to her teammates or even thinking about her actions. She is nothing more but try hard who wants to prove she is better than sonic.
yeah i think that's the core of the issue, people would likely be more open to sympahtising with lanolin if she showed any doubt or worry over her decisions, show that her decisions are partly Mimic's manipulation and not her choosing to trust him over anyone else, but far as i can tell she just doesn't so she just seems arrogant.
To be fair I see the whole issue with Silver is more of a mistake on Whisper's part. If she had just told Lanolin that she saw Duo kick Silver that would have helped but she didn't, she only told Silver. 🤔
@@RossPetersMusic there's really no point of telling her anything if she doesn't trust her teammates , I mean how can anyone tell someone as stubborn as her?

I personally like Lanolin. The cast needed a no nonsense pragmatist, and I dont think Lanolin deserves the alarmingly fervent hate she gets. Lanolin is thrust into this world of heroes for better or for worse, and she wants to do things right. A very understandable mindset. I think her character just needs more time to breathe.
Well, I think it’s also worth noting that Whisper and Silver did a really poor job at providing evidence for their accusations. Like, the only idea they could seriously come up with was attacking “Duo” in public and hope he transforms? Don’t get me wrong though, Lanolin still shoulders much of the blame for not giving their claims any serious thought. Especially Whisper, who knows how Mimic operates better than anyone else!
Tbh, I’m just waiting for her to apologize to Silver when she realizes him and Wisper were right about Duo/Mimic. I know she had every right to, and Mimic is that good at his job, but she didn’t need to go that harsh on him.
This infighting adds intrigue to the relationships between our heroes. If everything was smooth sailing for the team it would be quite a boring read. The interpersonal conflict also shows how cunning Mimic truly is. Great vid!
Like other people, i also like Lanolin, but she reallu belived a new guy over a hero from the future who can see a problem that will be a bigger problem later!
To be fair lanolin is a team leader thus she has to put biases aside over objective decision. It'd be a different scenario if their were literal evidence of duo/mimic manipulation but their wasn't. It was all hunches and all of duo attempts were chocked up to slip ups and it makes sense since duo is supposed to be a newbie. Her siding with duo over silver makes sense since their really isn't proof of duos action and theirs no way to really prove duos is the mimic without acting biased and favored or inhumane for example torturing.
@@jjohnson2445 their are many ways people can qualify to being a leader and lanolin does fit the role of a leader pretty well. Like I said lanolin portray of leadership is extremely realistic of how actual leaders would act. Being stern, strict, doing things carefully, not taking non sense, and looking at things objectively. Alongside thar lanolin also experiences stress which most sonic characters don't really experience on a daily basis which gives lanolin more realism as being a leader is a stressful job. While amy is a good leader, I feel like lanolin balances the diamond cutter dynamic much better than amy since if amy was the leader her upbeat attitude would make it feel like a girls super agent club. And besides amy retired from being the leader of restoration and wants to help from the sideline
What I like about Lanolin is how shes stressed, and rightfully so. She's involved in world deciding life or death situations thay come with working for Restoration HQ. Not only that, she's as by the book as they get when it comes to her work, but the people she works with, including those she looked up to, take one look at the book and immediately chuck it into a wood chipper. No shit she has a chip on her wooly shoulder.
I think general opinions on Lanolin will settle once we see where this arc lands, cause currently we are seeing a storyline that hasn't reach its payoff yet.
I actually love Lanolin because she feels like an Archie Sonic character in the world of IDW Sonic. Back in the previous continuity, it was all about hit and run tactics, building towards big assaults but this world and this Sonic is only interested in big climatic missions. Archie Sonic was willing to play along with Sally's plans, but this Sonic is more of a wandering hero, which clashes with a resistance-like style character works.
Now you see why people dislike her. Sonic and Friends aren't on HER turf; she's on THEIR turf! Those who defending her keep saying she's following THE rules when, in reality, she's following A SET OF rules. The problem is she's following is the WRONG set of rules. No one but her is enforcing them, not even Jewel! Besides, Sally still saw Sonic and all of her teammates as friends; there's no indication that Lanolin even respects her comrades anymore! Dare I say her behavior suggests she LOATHES Tangle; and it's because of this lack of respect that her teammates are keeping her in the dark. She refuses to trust them, so they just plain can't trust her.
@@videogollumer- yet Jewel still called out Silver logic and the reason she’s got suspicious later is because she’s seeing problems popping up too often that it gets noticeable rather then one problem at a time.

I started disliking her the way she did not take any credibility for silver. The guys litterally just saved the world from metal virus, but belive more the newcomer. Silver deserve at least more than that
If you watch the transition, she is becoming more confident, her insecurities are eased by encouragement by those around her, and her mistakes forgiven. Now we enter the potential Break the Haughty trope. Time to deliver the hard truth once she catches up with what the readers know.
It’s not that she didn’t want to believe them it’s the fact that they aren’t giving her something to justify their actions. Would you still say Silver was in the right after “hurting” Duo if we didn’t knew it was Mimic?
@@justynhill4814 I just say that his word matter he litterally just save the whole world. i would at least listen to him on the first time he said something and do an intensive back up check on the newcommer. @@mathieutrudelle763- Lanolin tries to listen to them but Whisper kept attacking with no disregard and when Silver “hurt” Duo Jewel once again called out their their flawed reasoning because the results they wanted didn’t show. It’s truly sad they aren’t giving her a chance and are basically dropping her in the lap of the villains.
@@justynhill4814 Here the thing, why do people do not hate Jewel? That because she analyse and take time. I like lanolin, I just want her to try and relax and try a bond with tangle and whisper as not just teammates but friends as well, that why she can have better confidence in herself and her skills to be able to stand with Sonic and the other.
To be fair being a leader isn't a lenient task. While most sonic characters have been able to maintain a positive mindset throughout most given scenarios, to be honest it's a unrealistic. Lanolin reactions and attitude has a lot of realistic attributes to it. In real life cases leaders usually have to maintain a strict, and objective perspective in most given scenarios. Alongside the fact that lanolin is a character prone to stress which is something we don't really see in a lot of sonic characters so lanolin having a lack of confidence in her abilities and struggling to maintain a deep friendship with tangle and whisper is justifiable. You can't really expect all the sonic character to face dangerous threat with a confident smirk on their face
I'm still thinking that she is waiting for it. Two of your group think the new guy with a transformation trick. The wisp should be able to pick him out. Too.
Well neither Tangle or Whisper seems willing to talk with her... I mean "the infamous silver scene where she proved she's Satan incarnate because she dared to ask Silver for evidence" all she asked for was evidence. And then later Tangle and Whisper actively choose to cut her out leaving her alone with Duo where he can work his Poison tongue on her, which of course makes Tangle 's outburst worse, heck they didn't even share Jewel's worries about Clutch with her like they already think she's a Clutch flunky. Which is going to spell disaster for the team because despite some people's theorizing there's no certainty that Duo will be outed as Mimic, not before he tears apart the Diamond Cutters in order to hurt Whisper.
I always find it funny in a lot of fandoms when a character goes through a character arc that tests the characters and shows them in a more negative light everyone jumps on the hate bandwagon until it is resolved
Pfft! Until it's resolved?! Sally slapping Sonic got resolved and there are some people who still hate her for it. Mina unintentionally turning everyone against NICOLE got resolved and there some are people who still hate her for it. Sonic prioritizing evil's freedom over innocent lives got resolved and some people still hate him for that. Some people still see Tails as a cowardly shell of his former self, some people still Knuckles as a dumb-a shell of his former self, some people still see Shadow as overly edgy and hateful shell of his former self, and some people even still see Amy as nothing more than a bratty, stalking, fangirl! Trust me, the people who drop it after it gets resolved are the REASONABLE people.
Although I don't like Lanolin's attitude, I don't dislike the character in any way. Also, really good video. But I only have one question. What's the name of the song at the end?
Yes, Lanolin was so much likable, tolerable and helpful in the urban warfare arc, but the misadventures and phantom riders arc have her slowly being overcome by obsession to be secure and perfect, which unfortunately has given her tunnel vision
That or sleep deprecation, The tired eyes Her apparent association with coffee The fact that a sheep being unable to sleep is hilariously ironic. It's not soild proof but I think the evidence is there.
Break the haughty, is the trope. Her rising confidence has not been truly checked yet, because any smaller moments were eased and placated by her friends and teammates. Now time to break her
I'm honestly happy that you made this video. It practically explains my thoughts on Lanolin as a character AND the fact her antagonizing and hate by fans seems unjustified.
I agree. Lanolin had made some bad calls and Whisper, Silver and team Sonic were more in the right than she was in their respective scenes, and she does deserve some small kind of comeuppance by getting humbled and eye-opened, Mimic's reveal being the catalyst, but she has potential to be a better person, and it's still possible for her to redeem herself and imprive her behaviour, and not go down the same path as Starline did
How Lanolin treated Silver is only the tip of the iceberg. How will Whisper react when Mimic is revealed, considering that Lanolin literally threw her to the ground while defending him? Since Tangle is so close with Whisper, will she have to choose sides? There's so much riding on this one choice, including Lanolin's self-confidence and how the rest of the Restoration will see her afterwards.
If i'm too greedy, i'm betting this: Lanolin will revolt and maybe she will move the people on her favor. She represents the people more than anything. Maybe she will start her own restoration, dividing this one in two, trying to achieve her goals with her own methods and all. Sonic's team might even turn into rogues to the world, dunno Those kinds of crazyness is what flyin likes to do. Don't forget that Surge had a similar mindset. She knows she is broken, she knows she is acting broken and still she is there to show sonic he failed
@@CedroEscarlate Yeah, because they're all grouchy, petty, shallow, arrogant idiots who trust total strangers over their own more experienced allies. It's not like they look up to Sonic and Friends or anything. 🙄
Seen this writing before. Build up the character's confidence as a leader, trying to console them on their flaws. Then something crashes their trust and overconfidence, forcing some self reflection and humbling. And I'm all here for it!! Cheers!
*Long comment incoming* Coming back to this video, and having read a bit more IDW and Mimics backstory, I still feel the same about Lanolin and Mimic. A big defense Lanolin is given is that the audience already knows Mimic is Duo, while he’s innocent from her perspective. I kinda wish they didnt reveal to the audience early on that Mimic was Duo, kinda ruined the tension and made the audience more angry at Lanolin for not seeing the signs. Lanolin is a civilian recently turned soldier so it does make sense why shes easier to fool compared to whisper. Even so, it does kinda strange that Silver is acting weirdly, Duo is also close to Silver when he’s acting sus, Whisper also suspects Duo and not once does Lanolin put two and two together and at least have someone investigate Duo, just in case. At the very least she coulda placed a hidden camera near his hospital bed, her not wanting a possibly innocent man to be attacked makes sense, but I feel like the writers made alot of characters act strangely out of character. I wouldn’t put Duo as a genius, since luck and Lanolin were a huge part of why he was so successful. If at any point: Whisper were recording him, someone had removed his gloves, someone had severely injured him to where he reverted to his regular form, his ass would have been cooked. And it doesn’t seem like he had a contingency plan
Imagine Eggman or Starline having a file in their systems listing Lanolin as a sleeper agent. It's not true, but they made observations and went with it. Somebody finds the file and takes the info back, no one can ever trust her again.
Lanolin is really good as a character but she annoys me so I have a hard time with her only for subjective reasons. Anyway, having a character who isn't just "happy go lucky I'm reckless" it's different from usual and refreshing so I can't wait to see what the comic has in store for her
YO TAMBIÉN QUIERO QUE ELLA TENGA EL RESPETO QUE MERECE Y NO SER ODIADA POR EL FANDOM. ELLA ES UNA BUENA INTERPRETACIÓN DE UNA LÍDER EXPERIMENTADA, ELLA REPRESENTA A LÍDERES A PERSONAS QUE SE DESARROLLAN Y CREEN EN SU MADUREZ Y LIDERAZGO ELLA ES ESO.
The reason why people are starting to get annoyed with Lanolin is that she comes off as very arrogant. This makes her act more like a villain even if she is supposed to be a good guy. And while she might be in a leadership position, she’s not proven to be a very good leader. Her arrogance makes her unwilling to learn from more experienced people and her inflexibility makes it impossible for her to work with certain people (even if they are the key to saving the world). And the worst part is that she doesn’t seem to be learning from her mistakes. (She was afraid that she appeared to be bossy and has become extremely bossy as a result). It’s obvious that she is in the middle of a character ark, but the issue is that it’s unclear which way it’s going to go. It is very possible that she will join the villains just because of who she is, but she could stay with the heros and learn from her mistakes (some of which could be catastrophic such as destroying the restoration or completly crushing Wisper emotionally). All in all, it is too early to make any judgments on her, but there are good reasons to dislike her at the moment.
Not only that, but she can't be dealt with like a true villain. At the end of the day, she is still in team "Good guys ™️" so there is nothing the heroes can do about her.
Absolutely, another problem she has is taking everything at face value, to the point that she's become narrow minded and not willing to see other possibilities of a situation. She's also too quick to write off others when they don't see her point of view, like what happened with Silver and Whisper when they had their suspicions about Duo, and harshly dismisses Silver without really hearing him out.
@@cristianrojas9684- she has a wisp. Good combat skills that she can fight evenly with Whisper, took a metaphorical and literally bullet for Tangle, and does have decent planning skills.
I like lanolin and I understand her perspective, but I dislike her pushing down her belief in established teammates just for duo, a person she just met. As for the duo reveal, if she can swallow her pride and apologize to whisper and silver, then she wont leave a sour taste in my mouth. all in all tho I like Lanolin.
i think another key aspect to the audience's reception of lanolin is the fact that, of the all the new characters introduced in the comics, she's the least fleshed out. aside from belle, basically every newcomer has a spin-off in which we get to learn more about them, which gives readers more chances to engage with, and eventually become fans of the character. tangle and whisper (and jewel) get Tangle and Whisper. surge and kit get Imposter Syndrome. starline gets fleshed out in both Imposter and Bad Guys. even with belle being the exception, we still have clear-cut chapters dedicated specifically towards giving her a proper introduction to the narrative. lanolin's character unfortunately lacks this privilege. to the reader, lanolin's character, whose screen time (page time?) is always shared with others, comes off as abrasive and invasive when compared to the rest of the cast that we know and love because IDW simply hasn't given readers enough as to why we should care about or empathize her. she has a personality type that isn't common in sonic characters, one that most ppl tend to find annoying or unlikable in most media when not properly fleshed out. she's now characterized as new girl that has beef with everyone, which to me is a disservice to her character, because like this vid and commenters have pointed out, she's still just at the beginning of her character arc. we can only hope that IDW will give her some more spotlight in the future, personally she's one of my fav sonic characters. i think her addition really adds depth and range to the cast.
One problem she has that is out of her control is being put in the same group as whisper and tangle. Those two characters are so popular that not only are they in two mobile games, but Sonic Frontiers even has a reference to them, they can easily make it into an official main series or spin-off game. They are probably the most popular original IDW characters, giving a fan favorite duo a third member very far in to the Comics story is sure to cause some controversy even if it is a good character
@@cristianrojas9684 They didn't even do that for Sally Acorn, although Whisper and Tangle aren't as popular as Sally Acorn they are probably the most popular IDW original characters, so giving a fan favorite duo a third member very Far in to the Comics story is definitely going to cause some controversy, even is that character a good character
@@Persona-Joop-157 I'm pretty sure the reason they never referenced Sally or the other Freedom Fighters in the games (besides a brief cameo in Sonic Spinball) was because the Archie comics went a *whole* different path than the current IDW comics do. To acknowledge Sally is to acknowledge the entire universe, warts and all; whereas IDW is a lot better at sticking to Sega-official canon than Archie was (mainly because this time around, Sega is a lot more involved with making sure things don't veer off track too much).
Honestly, I'm waiting for her Starline moment when her bad choices come crashing down on top of her (not literally, but still) and she learns that the heroes actually do know what they're doing due to their superior experience, even if their styles may clash and they don't always see eye to eye. I do want her character to become more fleshed out and her perspective to be explored. What makes a character compelling are the lies that are a part of their worldview and the moments that happen to them that clashes with those lies, and ultimately how they choose to go forward from there.
14:18 I feel the demand of Lanolin "having to trust Silver" ignores how that would be, by definition, a form of nepotism, because is only based on the fact "Silver is Silver" rather than Lanolin having more than Silver's words, which she doesn't xd. Counting the fact she want so hard to be good leader, I can't help but think that not trusting Silver was the right move, maybe no the more nice one, but being a good leader is also about hard decisions xd Don't get me wrong, Obviously Lanolin has flaws that are intentional for her character, but I can't help but conclude people aren't just reading correctly what is what was happening in there, and just thought about Silver being treated badly and Lanolin "being mean" Even the point of her being "too trusty" is kinda complicated because if she decided to trust Silver it would falling into the exact same mistake, and when both options leads you to the same problem, maybe the issue is in the presmise: She is not being "too trusty", she is being fair, in the sense a judge is fair. Like, do you believe a judge trust all the accused that pass through the hall? No, because is not their job to do such a thing, their jobs are taking all into consideration to offer a "fair" decision given the evidence, and according to Lanolin's evidence: She had two people accusing a third person, without a substantial reason xd
I’m starting to think that once Mimic is exposed, plus learning that Tangle and Whisper withheld the information to Jewel only, she’ll have a lot of trust issues plus knowing the Phantom Rider arc, she’ll break down and became more distant and going by the term: “Trust no one but yourself “. She’ll be more bitter and a lot worst to the point that she’ll leave the Restoration and became an anti-hero, became more ruthless on her mission.
@@valentinkambushev4968 I clearly see your point. She is definitely a terrible, terrible, leader and like you said, not a good team player. If Lanolin went alone, I would like that too, because I would love to see how she would be like if being an solo and a anti hero. Something like Shadow but not as worse as him.
Honestly, it sounds like it's mainly how she's at odds with well loved characters, like Sonic and Silver. People don't like it when others question their favourite character, even when it's other characters in the story (stories requiring some form of conflict)
For me personally while i do like Lanolin it feels like the writers are trying really hard to make people mad. Because while i agree letting silver just trash duo was dumb. Her also not wanting to hear Whisper out and look into the matter is equally awful. She KNOWS mimic is a shape shifter, why would she ignore that? I think that's the major issue. Its not so much that she's stern, or bossy is she comes off downright mean and hateful about it. This was really exemplified in the riders arc, where sonic amy and tails gears malfunctioned. Rather then being worried about there safety she just badgers them to get off the field like they did it on purpose. The issue for me is that... She's losing her empathy... that sweet natured girl that we saw through all the early comics is kind of being erased in favor of bitchy boss girl. the way silver was handled was equally bad because rather then sitting silver down and explaining why she had to remove him. Making him understand it was more of s suspension... cause someone got hurt. But no she just kicked him out and never bothers to check on him. infact worse then that she makes TANGLE vote him out and puts her on the spot! Ever since the Duo Arc lanolin has slowly lost what people enjoyed about her in favor of making her very antagonistic... this is more an example of bad writing, but i HOPE she redeems herself realizes she messed up and apologizes. But if this is the new lanolin we can expect i dunno if i'll keep enjoying her character...because the character i liked seems to have died.
To be fair unlike a lot of sonic characters, lanolin is a very dynamic character. The events in forces and idw has changed her a lot. Especially the metal virus and the forces war. I feel like its important to remember that idw writing is different from the games. Characters who dealt with traumatic events usually have a change I'm development in idw and lanolin is no exception. And as for duo situation you gotta look at it from lanolin perspective. It's obvious that she's in a lot of mental stress after eggperial city so her judgement might have some impairment. And while she is aware of mimic ability to shape-shift their really was no way to prove duo was mimic. Duo in lanolin eyes seemed like a kind hard working rookie trying his best similar to how lanolin was in the beginning. So seeing her teammates who are all seasoned fighter bullying the new guys due to his "slip ups" really could have rubbed lanolin the wrong way and seeing silver "supposedly hurting duo" was the straw the broke the camels back so seeing silver as liability isn't a uncalled for decision. Overall my point is lanolin may seem harsh in the way she acted but in her eyes she's just trying to do the right thing. While it would have been nice for her to trust her friends over duo, they had no proof duo was the mimic and their wasn't really anyway to prove it without doing something inhumane like torture.
People need to relearn how to read, she was actively hearing Whisper out while suggesting they investigate WITHOUT violence getting involved, which would've worked had Sliver and Whisper been so hellbent on LITERALLY ATTACKING HIM, which lead to Sliver being tricked as well.
@@maryboyd8126 literally. People are mad at lanolin because she acts different compared to other characters in terms of leadership. She's objective, has a no nonsense rule when in comes to danger, and follows order/sticks to the plan type or character. These are all good qualities of an actual leader. And her lashing out at silver and whisper were justified especially seeing as they had no evidence despite her confronting and attempting to reason with their suspicions showing that she did hear them out its just that she choose to be fair and not dive into assumptions because of simple hearsay
@@whiten4635 I bet you she'd could've gone "oh this guy's a spy? Go ahead and attack him immediately so we can find out if it's true or not" and people would STILL complain 😭
It's interesting to see all the coments. Seems people don't hate her. They hate what she did. But most everyone wants her to grow and be the best her she can be instead of dying or being writen out. Honestly nice to see.
@@fionali4502- We can ask Shadow but sometimes he gets stubborn to the point he won’t listen or needs a reason why he needs to listen. We can try Knuckles he was the commander during forces but he definitely wasn’t the best planner during Operation: Big Wave. How about Vector but he sometimes let his greed the best of him. Weird it’s almost as if no leader is perfect and mistakes have to be made to grow from them but a key aspect of these leaders I’ve mentioned is that they stay firm and don’t back down easily.
Saw her design one day and made my opinion then and there, having a video line this is cool since it gives me much needed info I wouldn't know otherwise. She seems like a pretty sweet character oddly enough, I'm rooting for her to get through these hurdles and come out of em better than ever👍 It always sucks to see a character be overhated but I seem to always pick faves who are so It is what it is
I will say that her status as divisive seems to mostly be because some fans are either being very unreasonable or just generally picking and choosing which heroes/allies gets a pass for daring to have flaws (Purely based on from what I can gather from this video and it's comments + unwanted discussion posts twitter puts on my TL)
The story could be better written, that's just what I think. Beacuse it makes sense, Lanolin doesn't even known Silver that well... Witch it makes sense, but as reader you know Duo is Mimic, and that frustrate you as reader, instead of a character makes sense. So it's just badly written...
The part where you said where life can hit you when you don't expect it, even if you prepare for it... I honestly needed to hear that. Just... genuinely. Thank you. Onto Lanolin and... gotta be honest, if there's not a more perfect way to represent the ping-ponging nature of Sonic fans liking and disliking something than her, then I don't know what would be.
I haven't caught up with the IDW comics but I certainly noticed the hate on Lanolin online. Thanks for the concise analysis! Oh man, do I dislike when people hate on characters for things that they aren't aware of. If anyone started flipping out and trying to assault someone else in front of me, regardless of my relationship with either of them, I'd kick the assaillant out too, no questions asked 😅As I said, I don't have the context because I didn't read the issues, but that's wildly inappropriate behavior if everyone else in the room isn't on the same page. That being said, I should probably go check out those issues now because that sounds like an interesting plot.
I can’t help but feel that there is a weird double standard with Lanolin and other characters. Like, had it been Shadow acting this way, especially with what happened with Silver, no one would bat an eye much. But fans have different standards for her. I am very interested in what her reaction would be after Mimic is exposed, like, how would she take it? What she would try so something like this doesn’t happen again? I love how you break it down and give new perspective to this character.
She's an under-qualified windbag! If she's gonna talk a game bigger than herself, people are gonna hold her to it and relish seeing her haughty spirit fall.
I have no problems with Lanolin. I have the beef with whoever is forcing that whole "good leader does bad decisions" shtick to be done so hastily and unthoughtful. It's obviously leading to a redemption arc. I seen enough of these to recognise one. The problem is - the redemption, as a result of the hamfisted approach to "bad decisions" part has the risk to turn out to be unsatisfactory, and readers might not forgive Lanolin. This will result in dissatisfaction and even major dislike from the readers. Biggest offence - Lanolin not respecting the Seniority of Whisper and Silver. She should've given them a benefit of the doubt. Whisper is the best operative, and Silver literally JUST SAVED THE WORLD. Alot of mistakes were made. It can all still be fixed. We need a chapter dedicated to Lanolin's side of the conflicts. Especially starting from the Incident of "Silver&Whisper vs Duo(Mimic)". Honestly, one of the ways to make her redemption satisfying would be if Lanolin was keeping tabs on Duo and actually was working to dig into Clutch's whole operation with covert espionage operatives, while pretending to be oblivious to Duo's shenanigans. And springing the trap on both Mimic and Clutch, while assisting heroes in the process, apologising for the charade she was keeping up until the very end.
@@TheSultan1470 people like you who don't know how corporate structure works should not open their mouths before doing research. Or at all, to be honest.
Is it just me, or is a bit of her character kind of derivative of Sally. I only think of that because of the segment where they try to be covert only for Sonic and Tangle to rush in, leading her to grow upset at their disregard to their original plan to stay covert to instead rush in and bash Badnicks, was a common back and fourth between Sonic and Sally in the SATM and Archie continuity. Then again I guess Amy also showed those qualities, and this all might just stem from them using the whole Resistance vs Eggman Empire thing which in itself is one name off from being the Freedom Fighters again. So it might just be inevitable.
She can't just trust her friends, and its not for the kind of reasons Whisper can't. While I like her, its pretty clear that we aren't supposed to side with her on how she does things. Its one thing if she's the "sorry, those are the rules" kinda person but she's not. She's a "100% by the book, and I won't listen to your concerns" kind of person. Her position has definitely went to her head
To be fair she's doing what a leader should do act objectively without bias. Without reasonable evidence she has no reason to suspect duo especially in her eyes he's a rookie who tends to slip up and she used to he in a similar position so she's just trying to support him the best she can. And seeing silver and whisper two veterans in combat picking on duo over suspicions without proof could have definitely rubbed her the wrong way. And being honest their really isn't a way to prove duo is the mimic just yet without acting biased towards her other teammates despite duo being a team member himself, or acting inhumane like constant investigation and spy, or torture.
@@whiten4635 But... If she sees herself in Duo and is more lenient towards him because of that, she is biased and has acted on that bias which, according to you, a good leader shouldn't do.
@@whiten4635 2 people have gone out of their way to voice concern over his actions and intentions yet she didn't bother hearing them out. I can understand why she would tell Whisper to mellow out a bit, but Silver's account should've raised more concern from her. She's leading them but she's not being a good leader, otherwise she wouldn't have just dismissed their concerns. She's not being objective, she's being adamant
@@ashemabahumat4173 I like to believe that throughout the entire time she's been with Silver, he just seemed like some incompetent guy the crew just hired, like Duo. And now with Duo being under condemnation, he seems headstrong too. Combined with Whisper being too overzealous, this situation seems to take advantage of the "Doesn't fully know her team" aspect of her character
@@destroyerofworlds4663 it'd be a problem either way cuz and she knew neither of them would make an accusation like that baseless, the issue is that she just dismissed it all
I just don't like how she's condescending. She is an inexperienced person trying to order around soldiers who's been in the fray of all of this for far far longer. Silver has been shown to be fooled as well, but was always on the side of good. While It's not a just reason to believe him at face value, but to completely ignore his warnings and not even bother keeping a watchful eye on Duo is just absurdity to me. She'll grow as a character I am sure, but it's so gosh darn slow. Archie Sonic felt like there was constant complex stories all trying to weave into complex plots near the end of it's life and peak. IDW it just feels like maybe 1-2 stories at a super slow snail pace because we have to put the main book on hiatus for a completely pointless book about Bean, Fang, and Bark that while fun it useless to the main book. Archie could have like 3-4 books all running at the same time. My point is we're only getting the midway point of her development where she's at the peak before she reaches a fall due to the betrayal and how she'll grow from it all. Likely she'll isolate herself from her team and be taken advantage of by Clutch until she learns better. Still rather stupid how she treats people who were "heroes" to her in the phantom rider arc atm though.
The fact that she's willing to trust a complete stranger over friends and people who have saved the planet many times despite learning who Mimic is and how he works is why she is a foolish and hypocritical character.
I don’t recall her ever learning about Mimic, but sure, let’s say she did. In the context of the story, she isn’t a hypocrite. It’s not strange that Lanolin is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. In fact, the Zeti remark on how mobians are forgiving and generous. Plus, she *hasn’t* been given evidence that Duo is suspicious. The only people claiming that are Silver and Whisper. One who caused a rock slide threatening her team and one who has admitted she struggles *alot*. From her perspective, Silver and Whisper harassed and injured this dude who’s trying their best.
@@missing_name if she's as thorough as she claims to be she would have known about Mimic simply by looking up the information about him in the resistance. Not to mention she also wouldn't even listen to either of Silver and Whisper's side of the story since interrupts them or just ignores any logical thing they say. And if Mobians were truly so forgiving then Silver and Whisper would have never accused Duo of anything. And obviously there would be no evil Mobians like Mimic or the other villains in the comic.
@@jillgrimwater3726 First off, I doubt that the resistance knows about Mimic. Whisper isn’t the type to share something as traumatic as Mimic with others. Even if you argue that tails would’ve told them, as far as they know, he’s in jail/unknown. Once again, Whisper and Silver don’t give logical reasoning. They make accusations and aren’t able to back them up. Silver goes as far as actually injuring Duo, which ends up shaking both Silver and Whisper’s belief in their *own* claims. If even Silver and Whisper begin to doubt it, why should Lanolin believe them?
@@missing_name Tangle also could have said something since she's literally fought him a couple times. And Jewel (aka the leader of the resistance) would know due to being impersonated by him which caused Tangle and Whisper to have to clear things up with her about him. Whisper hardly ever talks or speaks up for herself when it looks like she's the minority in an argument/conversation, while Silver does the same thing in that situation due to his lack of confidence. But I'm done arguing with you so believe believe whatever you want and continue supporting someone as foolish as Lamolin.
@@jillgrimwater3726 Look your whole argument falls apart bc Silver and Whisper begin backpedaling. Again, they don’t even believe their own accusations, why should Lanolin. Honestly, willfully ignorant takes like these further show how bad simple literacy skills are lacking.
My only issue with this is that Silver stands on some level as an equal to Sonic. His past actions give his words more weight. Over the new guy Duo. The fact that she didn't even doubt duo is doing her no favours. And the fact the writers chose a game character to be the one to take the fall when they have larger fanbases also hurt their character
This character is a lot more interesting than I thought at first I didn't like her but I think that opinion has changed thanks to this video, also don't like how they done Silver like that lol.
I can understand why Lanolin's character might resonate with some people but I can't bring myself to like this character. Although her strides in leadership as a relative newbie at the Restoration are admirable, there are a couple of things about how she leads the team that make her unlikable to me. She obviously has less experience in the field than Whisper and, arguably, Tangle, not to mention Silver and other established members of the Sonic cast, which, when coupled with the fact that she hasn't even got any real "victories" yet besides saving Tangle's tail ig, make it hard to sympathize with her when she's constantly in conflict with other team members. Her strategic abilities aren't used that frequently and were even undermined by the Eggperial City arc since the scouting mission not going according to her plan didn't really cause any severe negative consequences and even sort of benefited heroes with intel. She doesn't spend that much time bonding with her teammates which 1. Doesn't allow readers to know more about her as a character because she's always just "The leader of the Diamond Cutters" 2. Leads to distrust amongst her own team which is perfectly demonstrated in the recent issue when her teammates don't report Phantom Rider's real identity to her because they are scared of her and that leads to her being almost always completely oblivious to anything going on at the time and thus feeling static because she hasn't done that much and basically isn't allowed to this arc. Other characters are snooping around, doing stuff, impacting the story while she's just... there to give a stern talk to Sonic and co. for... having their gear malfunction... I guess... So we have an unexperienced grumpy leader that hasn't achieved anything significant as a leader yet and isn't allowed to for plot reasons with a team more experienced than her that doesn't trust her and is almost always in a state of conflict with her. I feel like they've done that Mimic infiltration thing a bit too early. I think that if Lanolin had more time in the book to... y'know, get some wins and make more people invested in her, (And, no, all that time when she was a background character doesn't count) her trusting Mimic would have been received better.
@@maryboyd8126 Then what is it? Define the reason, why neither Whisper nor Tangle decided to share such crucial information with her aside from "They just be dumb". Does "fear" define that better? Because if it does, that sounds even worse. Oh, wait, Tangle explicitly says "Lanolin hates the Phantom Rider. If we tell her... I'm *scared* of what she'll do." Though that still can be interpreted as an expression of distrust since... Tangle and Whisper *do not trust* Lanolin with that information because they *do not trust* her to act reasonably upon hearing it.
@@MGilbas first, if she gets closer to her team, she'll have a more biased reasoning to side with them, which is NOT a good trait for a leader, if I'm not mistaken, the sole reason she dislikes the Phantom Rider is because the races, and the Extreme Gear are sabotaged, which can hurt and injure people, that's very valid reasoning, the thing is, Lanolin has every right to hate the Phantom Rider since, from her prospective, he's probably the one doing everything and sabotaging the Extreme Gear, it isn't distrust keeping the others from telling her, it's necessity.
@@maryboyd8126 And yet lanolin and the clean sweep guards cause damage to the race track that nearly killed people when the phantom rider tried to tell them to not get closer. Do you think anyone will trust her after that?
@@AutZentus Lanolin had literally no connection to the Clean Sweep, she also wasn't the one who sabotage the Supreme Gear, all of that was the Clean Sweep, you sure you can even read properly?
i think the reason people have issue with Lanolin and see her in a bad light is due to how...biased she seems to be, and how meanspiritied she acted towards silver. but at the core of it is we don;t see her doubting her decisions far as I can tell, no questioning of her siding with Duo, a relative stranger, over Silver, who had been in the fight longer. Nor her seeming to think the idea of Duo being Mimic, a LITERAL SHAPESHIFTER, was somehow not a justifiable concern. She just seems to be wholly on Duo's side and seems to take any issue with him or what he does as without merit, leading her to come across as only caring about what the newbie has to say, despite the fact she herself is new to this as well. Overall i think people find her stance arrogant and self righteous, which can be quite irritating to people. Not saying I think that, just that's how i think is the issue. Plus the fact that she has yet to be proven wrong yet.
You are wrong. The Readers frustration is justified. The problem is that the story with Duo/Mimic relies on common tropes. Unfortunately these tropes come with uncharacteristic behavior. It wouldn't be that big of an issue, if she would defend Duo from Silver, since she doesn't really know him. But the moment Whisper points out Duo she should immediately recognize that Duo might not be what he claims to be. At that moment she should have called the training off and look for assistance. And she would be suspicious of Duo as well.
She’s a work in progress I’ll say. She’s still got a lot to learn on how to be a good leader, besides, she’s still starting out, let’s not forget she’s only been out on one mission, yes she did crack under pressure, but it was her first time out in the field, as a LEADER! Yes, she brushed off Sliver’s warnings of Duo being Mimic, not taking his side nor hearing out the others, yes she can be a bit stubborn(as seen with the Phantom Rider arc) but I’m hoping that in the arc following it she’ll come to understand her flaws and work to better herself and form a stronger bond with her fellow teammates “The Diamond Cutters”
It's interesting that sega (especially sega japan) are so determined to not use the satam/archie cast that tell approve of knock off characters like lanolin to fill the void and think that's enough for us.
I think readers don't realise that Lanolin uses tough love. She doesn't take it light on her friends and that's a characteristic of a good friend and team member. Yeah she sometimes go a bit overboard like with silver that one time, but I feel she wants to hold her friends accountable even if she takes it a bit further than she needs to be
I think that a lot of people need to understand is that Lanolin being unlikeable, or at least this uptight, is intentional. These are obvious character flaws that are supposed to cause friction and drama within the group. Even her Diamond Cutter members have butt heads with her, intentionally or not. So. It’s baffling when some of her defenders on Twitter insist she’s doing nothing wrong and place the blame on the legacy characters, completely missing the point of her arc. Yes, Sonic and his friends are reckless but there’s a method their madness. They’re in no ways perfect and their methods can be questioned, but they always pull through in the end, proving that hope and friendship can prevail. Sonic is a character that’s all about Freedom and doing this his way. Lanolin, on the other hand, is a woman of action with cynical view of the world. We’ve seen in some comics by her creator on Twitter how she resents Sonic for being so carefree and choosing not to end this eternal conflict with Eggman. And we’ve seen this resentment be harboured not just with him, but with her teammates. And given the events of the latest issue, she’s not gonna be too happy with them after finding out how they lied to her about the Phantom Rider’s identity. But just like Starline, her worldview is also flawed. She’s being duped by Mimic who infiltrated their team, and was responsible for a massive accident risking several lives after attacking the Phantom Rider. The comic as a whole seems to be exploring how different ideals are flawed. There’s not right answer even when we think we have one. So maybe the lesson we have to learn from this is perhaps there’s a middle ground you can reach in between? That being said. The execution of these ideas have not been perfect. As others have pointed out in this comment section, Lanolin’s introduction was also very rushed as they try to prop her up as this tough soldier, barking orders and berating heroes way more experienced than her. And there’s been some other ridiculous mental gymnastics to to force the drama with characaters acting dumb or plot devices like Whispers mask that can record footage swept under the rug. It also didn’t help her case that most of her development into a soldier happened off-screen either.
It's problematic, though, when a character people WANT to like is being made into a hate-sink character. Even if she takes a turn for the better; there will be fans who will never forgive her for this and continue hating her even if she repents of her bullheadedness. It happened with Amy, it happened with Sally, it happened with Mina, and it's gonna happen with Lanolin. Some Sonic fans are just unforgiving and LOUD about it.
Can't do that for too long in a monthly comic. That's how you get people to hate her. TV shows get away with it because the episodes are weekly and the arc is solved within the season.
@@cristianrojas9684 oh I agree. The pacing in this comic has been abysmal, dragging out her character ark which would’ve been done by now. Some manga has had this problem to. People tend to appreciate the full storyline when they go back and re-read the entire story at once than waiting months while keeping the last impression of the story fresh in your mind.
@@Fractorification In terms of pacing, it's nothing compared to Sonic himself. It took him 50 issues to realize that their are SOME people who are too evil and dangerous to be lenient on. Mr. Tinker is gone, Eggman is a sadistic technocratic fascist, and Metal Sonic is a soulless killing machine. Sonic doesn't have to kill them, but he had to learn that some people are just plain pure evil; it's fruitless to look for good where it doesn'r exist.
I see Lanolin like i saw Silver in 06. Inexperienced and brash yet wanting do good. Just give the comics time and she'll be ok depending on the fan. It's super obvious as to why she's getting so much scrutiny despite her being written almost the same way as Silver
I think why she gets as much slack is because she is literally a rookie bossing people around. I comes off as undeserved or 'snotty'. Also the double standard. She takes Mimic at his word but then blatantly ignores or disregards Whispers and Silvers, the clearly more experienced people on the subject. So with Lanolin as the leader, it just makes it feel like she's pretending to be something she's not.
But she’s not bossing people around at least not in the way you’re describing her. She’s tough but not unreasonable just doesn’t play favorites or need more information than just trust me like how Shadow needed proof to see if Mr.Tinker was being legit. She takes “Duo” at his words because he was accused and proven that he wasn’t Mimic against Whisper and Silver actions which caused him a “Broken” arm.
As an outsider, it seems really dumb to hate a character that literally doesn't even know what happened in the first place; more when this kind of narrative is a common trope. And, a little personal thought, this video kinda make me think IDW writers have some kind of fear of making a strong character; since Lanolin seems as strong as Knuckles, or at least at a similar level (Since it's the only side-character that has been since almost the beginning. Kinda shit that she is literally the only one i have seen actually training but not demonstrate her abilities :/)
She's a respectable leader but sometimes I just feel like she is being fooled and I respect her for trying her damnedest to lead the diamond cutters to victory
Sometimes, I feel like a lot of people don't understand characters who aren't perfect, who make mistakes, especially when they're more introverted or not the most social people out the there. They call these characters annoying, egoistic... Maybe it's because extroverts express their feelings more easily and so it's easier to understand that they aren't bad people deep down. Because these people need everything to be directly told to them, they can't understand how a character who is closed off to others feels, because these characters won't always have a long monologue explaining their feelings in great detail. To understand, they would need to analyze why these characters phrase things, or react to certain situations, the way they do. But these people can't do that, so they wrongly assume these characters are bad people. A great example of that is Kieran from the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC. These people call him egoistic, selfish and bratty, even though that's just not true. And maybe it's a similar situation with Lanolin. Edit : Actually, realization. It's not introverts that these people don't understand, it's victims of trauma, which both Kieran and Lanolin can be seen as a part of. I explain it in more detail in the replies if you want.
@@videogollumer See ? This is exactly what I'm talking about. And maybe she "acts like she hates everything" out of insecurity and trauma. Her village being attacked affected her a lot, especially since she couldn't do anything to help all these years ago. She's afraid that something like this would happen again, and because of how much it affected her, she gets upset at people who get in the way of preventing that because they're reckless or who don't take the situation seriously, like Sonic or Tangle. Because of what she's been through, she knows how serious this is, and she can't stand when people don't take it seriously. It obviously upsets her when people take this kind of situation that genuinly hurt her as well as so many other people not seriously. Not all wounds are physical. Her wounds are psychological, and those are very hard to heal. And she protects Duo to such a degree because she sees herself in him, and so she protects him like she wished people protected her. That's why she gets so defensive and agressive towards Silver. Because she sees herself in Duo, she gets upset that Silver treats him that way since she knows how it's like to be in Duo's shoes. She knows it's tough. Yes she's wrong for not trusting Silver even just a bit, but she has a lot of insecurities, and seeing someone being doubted like that probably reminded her of her own self-doubt. She doesn't want Duo to feel the way she does, a.k.a. like he's not good enough, that his best is never enough, and that his mistakes can never be forgiven. Because she probably can't forgive herself for not being able to help when her village was attacked. Yes she's projecting, and yes it makes her blind to the fact that Duo is suspicious, but also she's been through a lot, and you can't blame her for having trauma. It's not her fault, and it's hard to heal from trauma. Maybe I got it wrong actually. It's not introverts that you people don't understand, it's victims of trauma (which Kieran also is). And yes, she doesn't say directly "by the way, I have trauma", probably because she doesn't realize it herself. Also because trauma is a tough subject to adress for some people who have it, since well it's tied to traumatic experiences, so it's not always easy for them to talk about. It doesn't seem to be the case for Lanolin but still. It rejoins with my point of "just because she doesn't point it out clearly for the reader doesn't mean it's not the case". Sometimes you have to analyze their behavior and history to understand why they act a certain way, not just their dialogue. Basically you don't understand her, you don't understand what she's been through and why she acts the way she does, and your reaction to this character you don't understand is to hate her. Not great. Do you also react the same way towards the people you don't understand irl ?
@@Oceane1803 You don't think I do so? Believe me; I DO SO, and their is STILL no justification for it! Look at what Whisper, Tails, and Amy went through during the Metal Virus Saga! Lanolin was their to witness it. I have grown a love to these comics and the original characters are so well done, I love how Lanolin is such a great character❤ I love how her development is giving on every number she's in and although she got down moments like her misunderstanding with Silver and her attitude on the whole Riders arc just shows she's NOT PERFECT and that's GREAT🎉 Having a character with flaws just as good characteristics makes them more valuable and I love that from her
Still don't know how they didn't out Mimic. They got three of his tells. He's hiding his hands, he plays victim when in danger, and Silver even saw his eyes turn black.
Everyone wears gloves, you can say everyone plays victim when a physic hedgehog is using there powers on you, Silver wasn’t sure what he saw in “Duo’s” eyes and despite getting hurt Mimic maintained his form taking the hit.
I don't like Lanolin at all and she is a terrible hero in the story. The point of Duo being Mimic - you have Whisper, your teammate who you worked with, and Silver, a key hero to the Restoration, both come up and say Duo is Mimic, she pushes it off and tells them they are completely wrong. I will say, backing up Duo when there is only word of mouth and no proof is a good sign of a leader, there isn't any proof that Duo is really Mimic. But that is also true that there isn't any proof that Duo isn't Mimic either. You have someone who said they saw the signs of Mimic with Silver and Whisper knowing Mimic say that Duo is Mimic should raise possible alarms. Lanolin didn't find Duo suspicious and completely trusted him without a second thought. No testing Duo, no keeping an eye on Duo, or doing a background check, just granting him access to everything you have access to without any suspicions. You are dealing with a potential mass murdering shapeshifter who wants to kill your teammates, and potentially you as well, and would not hesitate to slit your throat in your sleep and you let them walk freely around the headquarters of the heroes. Terrible point one. Next point being how she dealt with Sonic, Tails, and Amy's equipment and the Phantom Rider. Yes, Tangle and Whisper kept the fact that the Phantom Rider was Sonic from her and she should have the right to know. But, Lanolin made it clear that she refuses to listen to Tangle and Whisper when they were hinting at the fact that the Phantom Rider could be trying to do something good. Lanolin just had tunnel vision, blinding her on any other possibility other than throwing the Phantom Rider in jail and never being seen again. She refused to acknowledge anything other than what she thought, losing Tangle and Whisper's trust in her when they tried talking to her. If you refuse to listen to those around you, why would they share anything with you at all? And the equipment, Tails is the Restoration's smartest and mechanically skilled member that we have seen. His personally made equipment all failed at the exact same time in the exact same way. That alone is suspicious and the fact tails even brought up something was wrong, Lanolin treated it as he was being a sore loser about it. You have the word of one of the smartest people on the planet, your expert in this field, the guy who could build a cunning edge machine from random junk potential says that the equipment was potentially sabotaged, Lanolin shut that line of thought down hard, once more bringing up the fact others can't trust you when you refuse to even question the possibility of sabotage when your expert says it might have happened. Lanolin keeps showing that she actively ignores and refuses the opinions of others. And a final point being in this comic. Lives are in danger, including Jewels, who is your boss, are about to be killed and your top priority is to arrest Sonic, to stop Sonic as he is trying to save lives and be a hero, to do his job as a Restoration member. Lanolin didn't go off to help the shuttle, she went after Sonic. In what world is arresting Sonic the correct opinion over SAVING LIVES, INCLUDING THE LIVES OF PEOPLE YOU KNOW AND CARE ABOUT! Here is Sonic, the famous hero who has always pushed himself in saving others, who acted as a villain to a race you just were told was run by a murdering terrorist who is with your boss! Your boss who is about to die! Lanolin never once thought that Sonic was investigating something suspicious, something both Tangle and Whisper concluded pretty much once they learned who the Phantom Rider was. She didn't think to save lives like she is meant to do, no, her focus was arresting Sonic. Sonic has never done something evil, he has his flaws, yes, but when push comes to shove, Sonic's number one priority is to be the hero, not caring about anything but saving people and stopping threats. For Lanolin, Sonic being the Phantom Rider is such a terrible thing it throws away everything Sonic has done to save and help people. That is my problem with Lanolin. She makes points that her teammates where hiding stuff from her but blew them off when they did try to tell her things. Her main goal wasn't to save lives or help people, but arrest someone capable of saving and helping others faster than you could do, to waste time on stopping someone who is trying to do the right thing. And trusting someone who you should be suspicious of over everyone else.
Lanolin is a character that's interesting to me since I do absolutely love her position in the story, being a genuinely heroic character but her methods go against a lot of the other heroic characters, creating tension. I always like that sort of thing. Only real downside is that I don't find her to be overly compelling personality-wise. I kind of wish she had more cartoony or exaggerated traits since she's definitely the most "normal" main character in IDW ngl. That's not even a bad thing, it just makes me relatively indifferent to her, and I think that might play a role for some people who've gotten iffy on her character since her clashes can seem a bit too "realistic" on her part, if that makes sense. So yeah, I like what the character brings to the table story-wise, but I do get why people are so frustrated with her ngl. The fact that there's a fair amount of time between issues definitely plays a role there too ngl
Lanolin is a character I actually like. She's has many parallels to Sally, but the few key differences make her interesting. Mostly in that she didn't grow up with Sonic, so she's a lot more rigid than Sally normally was portrayed. All in all, her decisions are the choices of someone who is honestly trying to do their best with the tools and information at hand. But when people deliberately keep her in the dark, she makes the wrong choices. Readers who hate her often site her poor choices, but forget that we have far more context than she does. She sees two teammates fighting and assumes the one with PTSD is having an episode. She listens to what Jewel has to say because she's her superior, but Jewel is also being kept in the dark. She's personally known Sonic for all of maybe a month, two tops, and doesn't know that when he acts out it's typically because he has more context than she does, and probably sees him as an incredibly reckless but good-hearted guy who's a great warrior, but maybe not cut out for command. That's how I see it, at least. She's a great leader, and she trusts her higher-ups enough to understand when there are bigger things at play. But as long as she doesn't have all the facts, she isn't going to make the best choices. She generally trusts her teammates until they give her a reason not to, such as friendly-fire incidents and doing things that ruin the team's cohesion (such as making accusations with minimal evidence).
I'm more confused as to why she doesn't treat Whisper with the same upset as Silver. SHe also was planning to attack Duo and even started rushing at him so why was she not told to take a break from the Diamond Cutters?
Because she never got the chance to attack, Sliver did, and was convinced he just attacked an innocent person, that should be enough information to stop Whisper from attacking Duo as well.
Honestly, I see three options: 1. Lanolin snaps and turns into a pseudo-villain, or more accurately, a vigilante. She has the same goals as Sonic: Stopping the bad guys. Except she makes efforts to stop them by killing them. Obviously Sonic doesn't like this and she becomes a side-villain, unfairly. 2. Lanolin, after finding out everyone essentially worked behind her back, snaps and quits the Diamond Cutters and Restoration. Obviously, she won't be gone forever, but I don't know what would happen with her going forward. Maybe a mercenary of sorts that works by her own rules. 3. Lanolin realizes she's wrong and trusts Sonic and the others going forward. Personally, this one I think goes against her character, whatever Evan is making of her compared to what Adam Bryce Thomas (Lanolin's creator) wants for her. She doesn't want to do things Sonic's way, and it shows. Sonic's way of dealing with the problem is letting the bad guys do their thing long enough to realize the error of their ways-a decision that's already led to the deaths of thousands, if not millions of innocent people by Eggman alone. Lanolin wants to keep people safe for good.
Nute Gunray (from Star Wars series) reaction of Lanolin the Sheep in IDW Sonic the Hedgehog series *Nute Gunray:* She can't do that! Shoot her... or something.
The problem isn't that she's wrong about Duo and siding with him, the problem is that she has no experience and consistently treats people with more experience than her like they're beneath her. Like she knows best despite knowing nothing at all. She's arrogant as all hell because she's NOT in a position where she should be even remotely as bossy and self-righteous as she is. Silver has more experience than all three of them put together. She's NOT a leader. She's a newbie playing at being a seasoned commander. Everyone else around her is more experienced than her and STILL she acts like she knows better than everyone else. STILL she talks down to her literal superiors and acts like she's something she's not- ...better than them.
Sliver has next to no known achievements in the Restoration, they all go towards Sonic, or are done IN THE FUTURE. she's LITERALLY the leader of the Diamond Cutters, it's her JOB to talk to, or down to other members if the time comes, and it's been shown MULTIPLE TIMES that she herself doesn't think she's fit for said job, did you even read the Comics?
@@maryboyd8126 First of all, don't be rude. I DID read the comics and have played every canon game before. I know what I'm talking about. Don't get butthurt just because I don't like Lanolin. Second, Lanolin ISN'T qualified for the job and that's the PROBLEM. She's an asshole to everyone around her even when it's not necessary and acts like she's better than everyone else. It should speak VOLUMES that everyone she's in command of has more experience than her. If she's not qualified for the job, she either shouldn't assume a leadership role, or should be more open to ideas that aren't her own and work WITH her team instead of AGAINST them. She's a total jerk as it stands now.
Some parts of the audience lacks compassion, that's internet for you. That's how i see the case of even considering Lanolin as a character divisive or controversial. Edit: 18:21. LOL.
@@videogollumer Hey just because someone follows rules to the T, doesn't mean they lack compassion. Well not in her case at least, since she has shown great deal of care for others and her companions. Hell, the only reason she does what she does is to help make the world safer from eggman. If that isn't selfless i dont know what is. She might be too focused on objectives and not be as open minded as the rest of the cast, but that's her flaws to overcome in the future, and are only flaws due to lack of flexibility. Then again, feel free to dislike her, she is just a fictional character at the end of the day. One i enjoy because of how her personality contrasts and clashes with almost everyone elses. A breath of fresh air.
I used to like Lanolin and the new Diamond cutters, buy after what they did and said to Silver, I now not only hate Bo peep's lost sheep(Lanolin) but all three new Diamond Cutters, plus Mimic. I even liked the villain Mimic's character until then.
What she needs is a harsh wake-up call. One that will make her realise how she lost her way... and when it will finally hit her, she may give into redemption arc.
Meh i still like landolin. Obviously the truth will be revealed and she'll feel terrible about all she's done. She feels like a less experienced Sally Acorn to me.
Another great video! I think with a lot of the IDW original characters, we're essentially seeing the types of people in Sonic's world who are on the ground, in the streets, being affected by this big world-shaking wars and crises, and seeing how these things affect them. Some of them have fascinating powers, or indominable can-do spirits, but a lot of them are just like us - citizens unprepared for combat with freaky war machines. Lanolin is one such person. I think this is something that gets lost in the shuffle when people are quick to put her down. She's an ordinary person who rose to the challenge of becoming a better version of herself to make a positive difference in a world, for the sake of people who might otherwise have become victims themselves. I think that's incredibly noble and aspirational. Aside from her rad sense of style, these things make me like her a lot! One final note... As far as audience reception goes, Lanolin has the deck stacked against her as both a new character to the franchise AND a character who could be considered something of a Girl Boss. Sonic has its share of Girl Bosses, but a lot of them have now been with us for a long time and had to endure years of flak from fans before opinions warmed to them. Lanolin is headstrong, very serious compared to most of our heroes (and even the villains really), and places herself in positions of authority over others - albeit with the kindest of intentions. I'm sure a lot of fans may feel she hasn't "earned" it. My hope is that, as the stories progress, they will come around on her!
A nap
She should take a nap after this.
(Plus she’s the leader, if anything, ripping into him for fucking up is her job, not silvers)
Plus, as far as she’s concerned, silver did literally endanger everyone’s lives, so she kind of has a right to be a little harder on him.
At the end of it all, I think Lanolin's biggest weakness is that she takes everything at face value.
@@BlackFlash09 I agree
No doubt.
Agree and that's the truth
Ah yep! 😑
Difference is that in 06 he came to that conclusion on his own without being put down by someone acting high and mighty.
Oh the irony silver witnessing his fault in another person could be a good aportunity for self reflect if the wrriters even tought of it
i think thats part of the problem though, the fact the audience knows before the characters is partly what makes it frustrating, but also, how the characters are dumbed down to make a subterfuge villain work, idiotballing as they say, and it's not just lanolin issue 64 made all the cutters idiots so they could write silver out and keep mimic's facade going.
No it didn't. If all it took was simple video to make you change your mind then you really didn't believe that
I do feel that Lanolin's creator, Adam Bryce Thomas, has pushed the idea that Lanolin isn't mentally well.

@XenoJehuty84 what's the name of that fan comic? I would like to check it out.
That’s what I’ve been thinking, she should trust characters that have way more experience than her.

Adam himself makes it clear that her smiles early on are fake, looks like Lanolin has been very stressed lately, so she not miss sunshine along with the cast , there's even stretches of her not liking the hero Sonic how he does things that is justice to him , she is surrounded by OP characters who they can end Eggman in anytime and she frustrated that she part of it and not mention she just a originally sheep girl with a bell for a weapon, it makes me understand what she coming from that she the underdog of the series, Lanolin is not my favorite character am not a big fan of disrespecting the same heros that save her life
she is an interesting character, A lot of others say she is similar to Dr.Starline who also admires someone who he looks up to but is disappointed by the results,
looks like she's gonna do the same thing with Sonic, I think it is coming soon in future issues, if she leaves the restoration people are wondering if she will meet with Shadow who also disagrees with Sonic's heroism
I was worried they'll make her a simple bossy sheep girl as a comedy relief or something I am glad they didn't do that, am curious what type of character development that she will have
I guess we can all thank Mr Thomas for how much he loves his creations and how he goes with making Lanolin more sympathetic and having her let her feelings out. he's basically a light mirror version of Ken Penders.

A sheep trying to play the role of a shepherd.. and she’s new to this job just as much as she’s new to this cast of characters, cut her some slack and give her break
a Lanolin centric video!!? don't mind if i do
one thing i know few people notice already is Lanolin is very similar to Starline in many way, they were inspired by two respective people Starline with Eggman, Lanolin with Sonic.
Ironic that Silver himself began as a tricked character, now he's at the side of the people who know the truth but can't communicate it
I never hated Lanolin, she just takes her job to seriously and over protective.
Not to mention I just appreciate a character who is TRULY no nonsense and how that effects the plot going forward
@@DromusTH That was such a damage control move.
Bustin her lamb chops is becoming a time honored tradition. Open a sonic thread and a mention of her will precede pics of bbq lamb meat.
I laughed so hard reading this
The thing with Lanolin is that while she may have the best of intentions and had a really great origin story and lead up.
@@videogollumerdoesn't matter. Even lawful characters can screw up
I think the only reason people hate her is because we haven’t had a humanizing moment for her yet. It’s like Adam Malkovich in Metroid Other M. I think just adding a panel or two of her crying or being sad that Silver was voted out alone would really help show that she didn’t want to kick him out and that she sees him as a friend.
That's a great idea! Just show us a page or two of Lanolin questioning herself and wondering if she can really be a good leader. 👍
@@AutZentus that could be interesting
yeah i think that's the core of the issue, people would likely be more open to sympahtising with lanolin if she showed any doubt or worry over her decisions, show that her decisions are partly Mimic's manipulation and not her choosing to trust him over anyone else, but far as i can tell she just doesn't so she just seems arrogant.
To be fair I see the whole issue with Silver is more of a mistake on Whisper's part. If she had just told Lanolin that she saw Duo kick Silver that would have helped but she didn't, she only told Silver. 🤔
@@RossPetersMusic there's really no point of telling her anything if she doesn't trust her teammates ,

CONCUERDO CONTIGO. ELLA SE MERCE MAS RESPETO Y AMOR. EN VEZ DE ODIO INJUSTIFICADO, NO LA CONVIERTAN EN LA VILLANA SIN CONTEXTO.
I really like Lanolin. I'm glad to see a character be untrusting and hostile without being evil. I wish more people liked her too.
Most people don't like cunts, dude.

Great vid!
The ANNUAL shows how cunning he is; everything else only depicts him as a despicable shortsighted coward.
@@videogollumer Not despicable at all, not a coward. Only strategic.
This honestly just proves that mimic is a master deceiver and manipulator, and I don't blame lanolin, I would've probably fallen for it to
Even Whisper was fooled when her attack failed to knock him out of form.
Blinded by her own pride and arrogants. And deaf by the lies she hears.
People like her need to be smack some sense into them.... Literally
@@whiten4635 Amy Rose is a much better team leader than lanolin
Why's it gotta take so fucking long though? The longer they take, the more people will end up hating her.
@@justynhill4814 To the first one, good point, except she didn't; she just told Tangle she had a say in the verdict. To the second one, as did everyone else EXCEPT Lanolin; all the more proof that she is unqualified for any sort of authoritative position.

She'll immediately think Sonic is up to no good, despite the fact that everyone around her knows better! She's WAY to big for her britches, and she has let that turn her into the very thing she hates: a bully!
Lanolin could learn a lot from Shadow. Well the old Shadow.

Now we enter the potential Break the Haughty trope. Time to deliver the hard truth once she catches up with what the readers know.

@@mathieutrudelle763- Lanolin tries to listen to them but Whisper kept attacking with no disregard and when Silver “hurt” Duo Jewel once again called out their their flawed reasoning because the results they wanted didn’t show.
Jewel is trusting them because she needs the pool small and it still doesn’t change the fact that Whisper is keeping Lanolin in the dark twice along with Tangle feeling guilty that they are doing this to her. It’s truly sad they aren’t giving her a chance and are basically dropping her in the lap of the villains.
@@justynhill4814 Here the thing, why do people do not hate Jewel? That because she analyse and take time. I'm still sure she is aware that duo is mimic, the way she look and act jewel know something is fishy.
But lanolin on the other end blame silver twice. I agree whit your whisper were rash, but silver. I keep saying this, the guys Just save the world. More recognisation should be granted. He may have flawd logic, but again The hero of the world just tell that the new comer is fishy, i would put the new commer on stand by and do a deep history check on the guy.
That or sleep deprecation,
The tired eyes

I'm honestly happy that you made this video. It practically explains my thoughts on Lanolin as a character AND the fact her antagonizing and hate by fans seems unjustified.
I agree. Lanolin had made some bad calls and Whisper, Silver and team Sonic were more in the right than she was in their respective scenes, and she does deserve some small kind of comeuppance by getting humbled and eye-opened, Mimic's reveal being the catalyst, but she has potential to be a better person, and it's still possible for her to redeem herself and imprive her behaviour, and not go down the same path as Starline did
@@RobertJames-i8j or some one should smack some sense into her.... Literally
If i'm too greedy, i'm betting this:
Lanolin will revolt and maybe she will move the people on her favor. She represents the people more than anything. Maybe she will start her own restoration, dividing this one in two, trying to achieve her goals with her own methods and all. Sonic's team might even turn into rogues to the world, dunno

*Long comment incoming*
Coming back to this video, and having read a bit more IDW and Mimics backstory, I still feel the same about Lanolin and Mimic.
That definitely sounds like something Eggman would do for shits and giggles.
Huh, Lanolin as a sleeper agent, eh?
Not a bad idea actually.
That would make an interesting plot twist. 🤔
@@valentinkambushev4968 There is. It's called telling her to screw off and go home. What is she gonna do? She doesn't have any powers.

That doesn't mean they're popular. It's just standard cross-promotion.
Counting the fact she want so hard to be good leader, I can't help but think that not trusting Silver was the right move, maybe no the more nice one, but being a good leader is also about hard decisions xd
Don't get me wrong, Obviously Lanolin has flaws that are intentional for her character, but I can't help but conclude people aren't just reading correctly what is what was happening in there, and just thought about Silver being treated badly and Lanolin "being mean"
Even the point of her being "too trusty" is kinda complicated because if she decided to trust Silver it would falling into the exact same mistake, and when both options leads you to the same problem, maybe the issue is in the presmise: She is not being "too trusty", she is being fair, in the sense a judge is fair.
To be home, that would be for the best. It's obvious that she is not a good team player.
I mean she is already doing it as we speak the only judgment she believes in is her own while belittling others .
I really like her character. I never hated her for being tricked, if anything it made me appreciate both her and Mimic as characters
Adam said she was faking her smile, so she faking her nice personality, shes struggling to be taken seriously

I really like Lanolin's design. I was thinking of reanimating that scene where she confront's Whisper and Silver over mimic tbh
@@XavielArt Good! Then everyone can see how terrible she really is.
The story could be better written, that's just what I think. Beacuse it makes sense, Lanolin doesn't even known Silver that well...
Witch it makes sense, but as reader you know Duo is Mimic, and that frustrate you as reader, instead of a character makes sense. So it's just badly written...
That's just it; she knows Duo even less than she knows Silver AND Whisper, yet she trusts him more! Where's the logic in that? It's painfully stupid!
*ping-ponging nurture
It's an influence, not inherent.

My only issue with this is that Silver stands on some level as an equal to Sonic. His past actions give his words more weight. Over the new guy Duo. The fact that she didn't even doubt duo is doing her no favours. Wonderful analysis! Also loved the verse at the end!
Isn't distrust but okay.
@@maryboyd8126 Then what is it? Define the reason, why neither Whisper nor Tangle decided to share such crucial information with her aside from "They just be dumb".

@@CometX-ing Exactly, Mimic didn’t say a word, she screwed herself over by being a b^tch with zero prompting.
i think the reason people have issue with Lanolin and see her in a bad light is due to how...biased she seems to be, and how meanspiritied she acted towards silver. but at the core of it is we don;t see her doubting her decisions far as I can tell, no questioning of her siding with Duo, a relative stranger, over Silver, who had been in the fight longer.
The problem is that she's been made as a replacement for Sally acorn and let's face that she is no Sally.
Agreed.

@@WBX64 It's not even tough love! She's a despotic doofus!
Silver at least started questioning himself; Lanolin hasn't even done that! ...yet.
Yep. No doubt about it. Can't wait to see how this will blow up in her face.
If she's so respectable, then why does she have the lowest Charisma score out of all the heroes? It's like 5!
What’s the name of the song at the end?
Sonic and his friends are plenty flawed, but at least they have likable traits; Lanolin just acts like she hates everything!
Look at what Sonic and Silver accomplished to get rid of it! Look at the character development Sonic and Tangle went through that ultimately made them both resolve to be more responsible!
Lanolin was their to witness it. They suffer/accomplished more than she ever did; yet she asserts herself as if she knows better than them, trusts a total stranger over them, and treats them like crap! There's no justification for it!
I read between the lines; it's the people defending her awful behavior who don't! If they did, they'd know that Lanolin's behavior is inexcusable!
@@videogollumer Okay but what if she still hasn't healed ? I don't see how her seeing people overcoming hardship would suddenly makes her overcome her own issues.
And as I said, yes she's wrong for acting the way she does and yes she's not justified. But you can still understand why she acts the way she did after everything she's been through.
@@Oceane1803 No, I can't, because it doesn't justify her arrogance.
Because Lanolin is asinine, assertive, and arrogant; and Mimic is a pathos portraying sea snake.
Everyone wears gloves, you can say everyone plays victim when a physic hedgehog is using there powers on you, Silver wasn’t sure what he saw in “Duo’s” eyes and despite getting hurt Mimic maintained his form taking the hit.
@@justynhill4814 Haha, yeah, exactly. Everyone wears gloves. BUT Mimic.
@@TheSultan1470- well yes he has mittens but that’s semantics a little.
@@justynhill4814 No, no, I mean Mimic in his current non-shapeshifted form. He has bare hands. Mittens are indeed gloves as well.
Does anyone want to see Ashlyn Madden voice Lanolin? I always imagine Ashlyn's Neera Li voice coming out of Lanolin's mouth. It just works!
Heck, Ashlyn already did voice acting for _Shin Megami Tensei V,_ which counts as a SEGA game, right?
No one's called her out for her bossiness, eh? guess it's about time someone did, mainly Tangle and/or Whisper, during issue 74
Honestly, I see three options:
It's kind of cool to have a sheep character be brave
Yet still mindlessly heading for the slaughter.

Nute Gunray (from Star Wars series) reaction of Lanolin the Sheep in IDW Sonic the Hedgehog series
*Nute Gunray:* She can't do that!

Second, Lanolin ISN'T qualified for the job and that's the PROBLEM. She's an asshole to everyone around her even when it's not necessary and acts like she's better than everyone else. It should speak VOLUMES that everyone she's in command of has more experience than her. If she's not qualified for the job, she either shouldn't assume a leadership role, or should be more open to ideas that aren't her own and work WITH her team instead of AGAINST them. She's a total jerk as it stands now.

Can you EXPECT the audience to have anything BUT a lack of compassion for a character who lacks compassion?
@@videogollumer Hey just because someone follows rules to the T, doesn't mean they lack compassion. If that isn't selfless i dont know what is.
She might be too focused on objectives and not be as open minded as the rest of the cast, but that's her flaws to overcome in the future, and are only flaws due to lack of flexibility.

Sally wasn't ever this callous, though.
