ILM's "Batteries Not Included" Robot Puppet!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 ноя 2021
- Adam meets one of the adorable robot puppets made for the cult-favorite 1987 science fiction film *Batteries Not Included, which was a product of the ILM model shop where Adam eventually worked. Even though it was made over 30 years ago, this puppet has held up very well, showing intricately hand machined components and clear graphical details that the ILM artist meticulously applied all those years ago.

*Are these robots? I thought they were tiny ships with aliens living on board.*
This is an awesome little prop to be found! *Batteries Not Included was one of my favourite movies as a kid and it still holds a place in my heart. We need to save these iconic pieces of film history from scrapyards and the progress of time.
just like how they wanted to save the building from being demo in the beginning of the movie
Cute little movie and it came out at a time when several other ILM-practical-effects movies came out too, like "Gremlins" and "Explorers". Good times!
Don Ameche, Jessica Tandy were incredible in that movie. First time I ever cared for older people in any movie I saw. Thnx for the burst of nostalgia. It's needed every once and a while in these trying times.
@@theonepstein5100 Still Fun to Watch with family, most younger kids have never seen it.
@@3949zxcvbnm yet sadly it no longer exists
I sculpted the robots from Batteries not Included so many times as a kid. What a great underrated film.
Ah come on Frank. How is this movie overrated? LOTR is overrated, right? This film isn't that well known. When it hit screens, I was the perfect target audience.
My father, Tadeusz Krzanowski, built and worked on all the saucers. He developed the wire rig to fly the main saucers. The art dept. at ILM probably did the paint job but my dad probably built the little armature. The eyes light up and there might be additional lights inside. He can’t remember. Also possible Dave Allen, who puppetered them did a bit of work on them too.
I saw that wire rig - it was genius ! the saucer "hung" from the wires but could be manipulated like it was on a pipe. And yes, the eyes were Glass With Hi intensity bulbs. Greg Jein did a lot of the model work, I assisted and also helped solve the dilemma of how to make the eyes.
That's awesome. Thank your dad for the amazing memories from this and I'm assuming other movies.
@@cryogenesys and thank you for all of the memories
thanks to all the makers for the awesome work and heart put into it.
@@cryogenesys Thank you all for so many wonderful memories
If I remember correctly, this little guy was the one "stillborn". The model might be purposefully "rough around the edges", because he gets rebuilt by the big guy, Harry, using parts from his TV.
Exactly!
Yeah thats right I remember now brilliant
this is the Model of the "youngest" Alien that was defective after it's creation. It got saved by the Ex-Boxer in the House and repaired with parts of his beloved TV.
It is probably the most valuable of the created Models.
And he named it "Batteries Not Included". It's actually the hero of the movie.
@@operationgoldfish8331 He didn't name it, he described its situation.
I remember loving this movie for the believability of the robots. The whimsical details and emotions from a puppet that some actors could never convey was emotionally overwhelming.
One of the first movies I have ever seen. I really hope they never remake this, because you can not do better in any way!
If it were to be remade, it can do nothing but good. Like how creating a new generation of dodge chargers like the 1971-1974 don’t somehow make the 1968-1970 chargers any worse than they were before.
New adaptions of old films don’t jeopardize the quality of the original, nor do they decrease the popularity and interest of the older films either. In fact, most of the time a new adaption of a film is released, there is a growth in appreciation for the original concepts and cinematography in comparison, whether or not the newer film lives up to the expectations and the shadow of which the movie originates.
I dislike the idea that a remake or adaption shouldn’t be considered because the original content is deemed subjectively ‘perfect’. It relies entirely on the perception and preferences of the observer.
While some movies are classics, their remakes are somewhat better due to updated quality, standards, visual effects, directing and even shifts of the tempo and the storyline.
Although I will tell you one movie they shouldn’t remake… Pootie Tang.
@@Super_Boa Boy! turn down that racket!
@@Super_Boa I have to disagree with you there, a bad current incarnation of a show can definatly hurt the previous work. Just look at Startrek and Dr.Who right now, the current shows are garbage, and its turning literally life long fans away from the shows and from the good stuff that came before.
Totally agree, Cool to see others who loved this movie with me
@@Super_Boa I couldn't disagree with you more. A lot of movies have been ruined with a shity remake where no one cares about the movie but just care about the money it makes, Friday the 13th remake, nightmare on elm st remake, tmnt remake, transformers... well no remake there but man I love transformers but hate those movie cause they didn't care about the source material so same concept of the uncaring remake Hollywood loves to make just for the money. If you need more examples and have a few hours to kill I'll list them all off for you. Unless it's made by people who care about the original then just say no to cash grab remakes
The film still stands up as a family movie
it absolutely does and as a matter of fact i think i will watch it tonight
It's the baaaby! This is the third baby that was "stillborn" and was jump-started by Harry the boxer. The shell was a bit more piece-meal than the other babies.
Yep. That's the one! 😁
I love this movie, I remember saving my allowance to buy the VHS. Seeing the puppet brings back those memories.
EVERY time I see a little hexi-tile floor, I think of that little dude tapping a tile into place with his foot
omg my brother who is special needs loves this movie. We used to watch it all the time growing up together. He loves seeing those little robots pop up in the movie.
Adam, i'd love to see you make one of these from scratch. This movie was amazing back in the day and i love it.
I absolutely adored this movie when I was a kid...and it still has a place in my heart. This is one of the few items that I'd actually REALLY want to have in my home. I've practiced for several years to ignore the little voice that says, "I want THAT cool thing!" but, this one is tough to resist!😍
I just looked at the starting bid...I don't even have that $8,000 to begin to pretend to be a part of that auction. 😂 I'll just have to leave it to the rich art collectors....
I adore that film. an underappreciated gem.
OH! That's the little dude that was replacing the tiled floor one piece at a time!
I loved that movie.
Batteries Not Included was one of my childhood wholesome movies, this really hits the nostalgia.
I remember watching this movie ages ago. At the time I fell in love with those little robots, adorable.
My dad took me to see it at the cinema, always loved that movie...and damn I'm getting old.
No waaaaaay! Was over the moon for this movie when I was a kid.
I don't care what anyone says about Batteries not included, it is a classic, and I've watched it countless times!
Best movie ever, thank you for showing this.
Thank you! A magical movie.
Love the real-life husband/wife actors Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn❤️
I used to make dry transfer graphics sheets by hand for GM, Ford and Chrysler when I worked in Detroit for their concept cars. I wish I still had the equipment to make them.
I was an industrial design intern at Hamilton Beach a few years back and I used rub downs a lot on the models. So some places still use them commonly
@@jonathansmerigian9737 I did a search today and found companies that still make them. Good to know.
*Batteries NOT included (with the asterisk) is one of my all time favorite movies! It tells the story of improbable chances, and unbelievable outcomes which keeps peoples hope and faith. I always wondered where their home world might have been! Seeing this prop was GREAT.
Wonders if current tech could make a drone version of this???
One of if not my most favorite film that revolves around robotics. This is awesome seeing this little guy.
This is definitely one of my top 5 movies of all time. Just makes me happy sad laugh in the just the right measure.
You know how people mention the holy grail of movie props? This one is mine. I watched the movie as a small child and I have never forgotten about. I’d die a happy man with that in my hands.
Such an amazing and memorable movie. Great to see this little cute guy
Always dug "Batteries not included" in fact I actually rewatched it a couple of months back. Adam I think you should start a tradition in model making where you include a "pocket" in models you make for shows which has a little letter for a restorer/modder to find. With any luck each person to work on such things would include their own message/notes. Even if its a built in USB stick.
This movie was legit CUTEST EVER, I'm so happy this little gaffer is still "alive"!
Batteries Not Included one of most charming movies ever and one of my favorites
Oh man, this is a blast from the past. I loved that movie so much as a kid... it was amazing. Those puppets were incredible.
One of my favorite movies from my youth! That's such a great piece to see
One of my favourite childhood movies.
When the stillborn was rescued and it saved one of his siblings while flying I about cried!
@@mikeaninger7388 me too, mate.
I was obsessed with the robots from that movie as a child! I drew them for years often starting my tracing my protractor. On a couple of occasions, I even attempted to make my own by cutting up cans and things and sticking the pieces together. I don't recommend this as it's really easy to cut yourself up on the sharp edges of a cut piece of soda can or coffee can. Obviously that's not how they were really made but my 6-8 year old self didn't realize that. I hope whoever ends up with this movie prop has the same level of appreciation for it. I'm 40 years old now and I never forgot the robots from Batteries Not Included.
thats a tearjerker of a movie.
As a kid I was so obsessed with this movie, when I got it on VHS I watched it so many times that I broke the tape🙊🙉🙈
I do have to point out that during this timeframe this movie as well as cocoon had come out and it's just weird decisions when somebody is like hey let's mix sci-fi with a retirement home LOL😹, but they're both Classics so who knew?
A great film, awesome to see this prop and you can tell Adam knows his stuff.
Best movie ever! The greatest representation of how humanity should be.
I rewatched batteries not included with all my friends recently and we coco cried at that movie. Its aged wonderfully
I would LOVE a model kit of any of the robots from Batteries Not Included. They all had such great designs
There are actually a few of them out there! They're varying in quality and accuracy, but if you can 3D print there are 3D-printable ones too which are pretty nice.
Omg, I LOVED this movie as a kid. Saw it in theaters, and it was one of the movies that inspired me to go into engineering.
Can't believe this prop is almost 35 years old. One my all time favorite movie.
I had this movie and the two Short Circuit movies on VHS. Played to death!
i had completely forgot about this movie. i remember it from when i was a kid. i was born in 84 so i was really young but i remember the robots so thanks for the bring this back to the surface. im half way through the movie right now cause i had to go back an watch it just to actually remember the movies story all i could remember was the little robots so thank you so much. i will be making models of these to have around my room. thanks for sharing stuff like this. kinda amazing how something as simple as showing old movie props can open the flood gate of forgotten child hood memories.
Oh my god I remember being obsessed with this movie from when I was a kid. Damn I feel old
I was just teleported 35 years to the past. I was 10 and we had just gotten our very first VCR. This was the first movie I ever rented. Wow, just, thank you.
Batteries not included was one of my favorite movies when I was growing! I kept that movie in heavy rotation in my VHS kids movies!😊
One of my favorite movies as a kid. This and Johnny #5 got me into robotics. Amazing to see this again - thank you!
What a great movie Batteries Not Included was. Love that an actual prop is available to buy for fans. Wish I had the money to bid on it. 🤖 😎
When I was a child I remembered those little space ships and love the movie .. but never new the name of the movie..
until now.. I can watch it again !! Thanks !! 🙏🏽
I can still remember seeing this in the theater with my mom and younger brother.
Amazing that it is so small. I would have thought they made it easier on themselves with larger models and some perspective trickery, but they went through the effort of making it actual scale, that's really impressive.
I can still remember being a kid and seeing this movie for the first time and just falling in love. What an amazing film and item. Someone better hide my credit card.
I lived this movie when I was a kid. We were pretty poor but I talked my mom and grandma into taking me several times for the cheap daytime shows.
Batteries Not Included was one of my favourite movies growing up.
I haven't thought about Batteries Not Included in decades. I saw it as a kid, and think I'm going to plan a movie night with my kiddo for it now
One of my favorite childhood movies was Batteries Not Included next to short-circuit and other robot movies, anybody ever seen Robo-jox?
So great! I love that movie!
I loved that movie!! Miss movies that do puppetry! Studios need to bring it back!
They did though. Often they just digitally erase the rods and puppeteers these days.
I find it refreshing and extremely cool that there are companies and people that preserve these historical icons of our movie history. If not for them these could have vanished from our archives completely. It is amazing how some items can hit me in a way that actually brings emotion to the forefront. For instance seeing the ECTO 1 had me choked up! I mean it is really cool. Thanks Adam!
This movie was my childhood. I LOVE these little dudes! I've actually been hunting reference images to build Wheems. The timing on this is uncanny
There are 3d print files available of the entire family.
Desigining cute robots must be an art form all of it's own. :)
This may be one of the props I would be most excited to see. Batteries not included was a movie I loved.
I absolutely loved this film and still do such a fantastic idea well in my love of films effects world. Awesome to see this prop. Makes me want to watch it again. Thank you for showing it. Another part of my childhood
This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I would die to have that little alien!
Makes me want to rewatch it.
This dude is so anxious with Adam frantically waving his hands descriptively 😂
OMG! OMG! I loved "Batteries Not Included" as a child
I love this - brings back great memories - this was one of the most memorable movies of my childhood!
loved this movie when I was a kid, played the VHS over and over until it didn't play anymore.
I enjoy watching these two nerd out together.
So cool! I loved this movie as a kid.
Used to watch it over and over.
Such a beautiful wee bit of history. I loved the movie when I was growing up🏴
I loved this movie so much when I was a kid! I got to get my hands on it for a rewatch one of these days.
Its on HBO Max also.
So cool! Loved this film when i was younger.
35 years later...And. The film is still great!!
I loved this movie as a kid. So cool to see this puppet.
Batteries Not Included is a classic. I've owned it on DVD since 2010. 1:20 Wow! The actual puppet from the movie. I'd buy that for a dollar.
This guy knows his stuff…seems like a real lover of movie props!
I loved Batteries Not Included as a kid. It sometimes feels like this move has been forgotten about because its never brought up.
It's the little cute one that the boxer dude brought back to life! I love that charming little movie, so much fun. Great prop too, I might have to 3D resin print the trio of "kids" Fix-its!
What's funny is despite it 'physically' being there, it looks like its isolated from the rest of the video like a green screen effect. It just really stands out
Criminally underviewed video. I loved "Batteries Not Included" when I was a kid, and no one I know these days remembers it. It's a shame.
Man I remember watching that movie as a kid so seeing this is really cool.
These are the kinds of movies I'd like to write and direct once I'm done with film school.
Awesome nostalgic classic movie 😁
I loved this movie when I was young
A magical movie from my childhood. So freaking cool!
One of my favorite childhood movies!
I worked as a Model Maker on the first Harry Potter film, 5 of us signed our names on the inside of various parts of the Hogwarts model (which is huge). Most of us with a typical "Blah Blah was here 2000" 😆
This damn movie made me cry....
I watched this movie back when I was a kid, with a girl who was my best friend and also my first crush at the time. :)
I LOVE that film! all the little robots are so cute.
Great episode! I love that movie!!! I am so old that when I talk about this movie to my peers at work (early twenties), they just look at me as if I am making it up. But that is how it is with most of the movies that I love.
I Have a little saucer guy from the movie TOO!!! Was talking to someone I worked with years ago about the movie. The next day he brought it in and gave it to me!! Was obvious it was sort of a play toy. But has all the little details just like this one!!! Missing feet and antennas, cherish it none the less.
Oh man. I loved that movie when I was a kid. Dare I watch it again and ruin my childhood? 😂
That's amazing to see a prop from that movie still around
Have to add a comment to say I still love the film. Lovely model to see also in modern times. Thanks.
