Continuing Controversy of Buzz Saw VS Chainsaw HD 1080p

  • There's a little sawdust and some short pieces of pole wood that are the subject of the video.....Actually...the real subject as reflected in the title is perpetuating the myth in the minds of the obstinate chainsaw jockey that think theirs is the superior way to cut pole wood. The way that is done is by insisting that the buzz saw is the superior way..... Oh yeah man, I am the King of Controversy.... I remember almost getting beat up on the playground in Kindergarten insisting chocolate milk is superior to white milk.... Yep, that little girl was a tough one....
    Seriously though if you didn't accidentally FF past it, I proudly state to not let anyone else tell you what is best for you.... Decide for yourself and do what is right for you. You know what though, there are many occasions where I prefer cutting pole wood with a chainsaw. One would be if you are deep in the woods and at another location where it would take another trip to get the saw rig there. Makes sense to whack 'em and stack 'em....but then again, most times its easy enough to get them on the trailer in pole lengths to transport back home to the woodpile for staging. The same movement per stick nets a greater return in the short period merely by length. One bend, one pole equals multiple pieces in the same amount of time. When on sites, sometimes 'time is of the essence'. You just gotta hit and git it....cut it, load it and move out !! This gives you the option then of relaxing while processing back at the ranch and not being 'under the gun' meeting a deadline on site.
    The main goal to processing wood in any fashion as a near-septuagenarian is conservation of movement and energy. An older body regenerates strength and endurance to a lesser degree than that of a younger body in a given time. Especially if you pack a little additional weight around the midsection or consume a lot of sugars and fats. But hey...I was NOT born to do without ice cream or red meat, so there's a trade off in this area. I'm good with that.
    So suffice it to say this was just basically another simple video designed to provoke a little thought for 'the other side'....the diehard group of ''Man I can do that faster with a chainsaw" people. Its all good, we are all basically just trying to beat the system by keeping in shape mentally and physically while providing a superior level of warmth for our own personal Hobbit Holes. What ever you do, just keep on doing it, but do it with an open mind and you may find you are surprised by the result !! Bear in mind that all content within the confines of this production is based on my personal experiences and are my opinion only !! Your experiences and opinions may vary, but we can still be internet friends....LOL.
    Keep on whacking and stacking and and Happy New Year of Sawing !!

    Love the juxtaposition of the satire and humility as always with your great videos. I like to exercise the best of both worlds with a budget Electric buzz saw for small pole wood and a chainsaw for the bigger stuff.
    It’s nice to see how others operate... for instance, my confidence might not be quite there yet for your set up but the speed and efficiency appeals to me. I am definitely considering an upgrade to a pto buzz saw but possibly with the addition of some retrospective guarding and even an out feed conveyer if we need to increase our production.
    Thanks again.

      By golly Marcus you are on the right track...You certainly have the right tractor to make it work smoothly. I don't know how easily they are found in the UK, but I'm sure there are some out around the countryside. Ferguson and Dearborn saws are almost identical. Keep your eye peeled for the right angle drive that has the attachment point on top in the rear. They are scarce as hen's teeth around here. • @tractorman4461

      We processed slab wood with the buzz saw by the thousands. It works perfectly well in that situation. You develop a knack of going into the blade then raising the rear or the front of a wide slab at just the right time to finish the cut on a wide one too. They are available quite frequently around here. I missed one a few miles away from me on FB Marketplace recently....Fifty bucks. I called and the guy was waiting on the first guy that called to show up. Missed it that close....minutes. Thanks Timothy for the comment sir.

    Great controversy subject here! Good considerations too about the safety of movements. I agree with you, stepping on uneven ground with a chainsaw is not safe. Especially if you try to beat the clock. One thing I like about your setup is that the cut log is in your right hand and you just swing it on the woodpile. No more handling upon that point. Then each arm does half of the job. Another good point you made is, how can you say a buzz saw is not safe if you haven't used one yet! I like your description above: " pack a little additional weight around the midsection"... You sure had a good feast recently! Lol! Thanks Wendell!

LOL. That sounds a bit too dramatic doesn't it. Really I wouldn't change a thing about the way we all came up... doing things our city friends wouldn't be able to figure out how to start to do. Wendell, as usual, good video. A friend of mine has his dad's Farmall H that is setup with a front mounted buzz saw. He takes it to the Moses Austin Days in Potosi, Missouri, so he replaced the blade with a round wooden one (without teeth). I was over at this house last week and I told him I made need some parts for the H I got from you so if he sees a part or two missing from his H......
    I know from experience a chain saw will wear you out quick enough. Of course age does play a part, but even a young man will get pretty tired if he spent a full day on a chain saw.

      @@tractorman4461 He has helped me immensely on my Farmall Cubs and there is an interesting story on his H. It was his dads, a 1941 model. A guy working for them was loading into a silo bin, the kind that had a ramp, when he flipped the tractor over backwards, bending the steering column and the hood a bit. They never really fixed it, but used it like it was. They ended up getting rid of it, and decades later the FarmallCubforum bought it back for him. He said he just about cried. Anyways, that is one tractor that will probably stay in the family. He doesn't get around too much anymore, but he loves to drive it in the Moses Austin parade. He lives about 5 or miles west of Potosi in Highway 185 and he drives it to the parade. He has the governor set so he can go about 20 mph in road gear (factory is 15 mph). He's braver than I, I wouldn't drive it on 185, too many hills where a car coming up behind you won't have time to slow down.

Any other bio degradable materials go in there too. It makes some good dirt and my whole garden area is the home made dirt. • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 года назад +1

      Well Mark, its both. Very near the bottom and a bit above the hinge is a compression spring. But the trick is to make it to where it only compresses the last portion of the swing of the table into the blade because it would take so much more effort to compress a long spring AND push the block through the blade at the same time. So the 'return assistance' is only on about half the stroke of the table but you develop a knack for exerting down pressure with your left hand to complete the tilt tables cycle to the start position. Make sense ?? Thanks for the observation and asking the question. Have a Happy New Year !!

    Like to find out more about them old B’s. I believe mines the same vintage, I don’t know how many years they made the 100 series as there is some overlap with the 7001, 6001 etc. I purchased my b6100 from the original owner (160 hr ) last summer. I like the fat rear tires on yours! Really good grip and stability I bet. Take care

    • @tractorman4461

      I think the B7100 were in production from '76 through '85 with just minor changes. 160 hours on a B6100 is almost undeward of !! Its barely broken in. Those fat rears came of of my B2400 and are weighted foam filled. I wore out the original tires all the way around. Its really stable and will go anywhere I need to take it !! Of course its been remanded to buzz saw duty for a number of years because it does such a good job and is economical to run all day. Thanks Tom for the talk....good luck with your 6100, its just about unstoppable !! Stay Warm and take care.

      I keep my eye peeled at farm auctions and buy them cheap as I can. At one auction I bought a new blade mounted on a new arbor and new bearings for five bucks. It had never been installed on a frame but was rusty from sitting in a shed for 40 years or so. But I've also gotten buzz saws along with a tractor purchase too. I inspect them all for fractures at the bottom of each gullet before I put them into service. Check this out if you'd like, Its an old video but you might find it interesting: ruclips.net/video/ezvZ7u8jUwE/видео.html I have a playlist of buzz saw videos up top of the page too.

      Yes I agree with that. I have found that a maximum of 8'' to 9'' is best cut with the buzz saw. The big advantage to me is carrying the loads of pole wood in lengths back to be cut right at the shed and tossed in, instead of all the bending over to pick up all the pieces in the woods when using a chainsaw.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  10 месяцев назад

      It takes more of our limited time to make extra cuts and extra lifts on site. Its more time conscious to haul logs as long as possible on the 24' and 26' trailers. Less cuts, less trips with the loader gets more product on each load quicker. Once home we are no longer restricted to the same time constraints.
      It's just a variation of why we don't buck the logs in to blocks for the wood splitter on site. Too much movement and too many parts take too much time. We get the most logs back home and staged for either the wood pile or sawmill with the least time and effort.

    Can you tell how many RPM yours saw blade do and what's the diameter of it?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 года назад +1

      Iirc, that particular blade is 31''. The saw arbor at wide open throttle is running between 600 and 650 rpm. These bearings cannot sustain much higher than that. If they were a pillow block roller bearing I could run it a bit faster, but I always consider the age and condition of the individual blades. A old 60-70 year old work hardened blade could be susceptible to cracking and coming apart with high rpm operation. If this was a new carbide blade on the correct bearings and shaft it would be running a lot faster. This Kubota has a three speed pto...540, 750 and 1000 rpm's at wide open throttle. Thanks for watching, showing interest and leaving a comment as well !!

      @@tractorman4461 I also have buzz saw, plan to install on it electric motor. i have 25" blade. It's also buzz saw plade but made in soviet union.
      It would run about 1600 RPM. What you think is it too much or it's ok? Angular velocity would be about 45 meters in second (about 147 feet in one second).
      Greetings from Estonia.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 года назад +1

      @@loodusefilm7881 I'd have a tendency to think its a bit too high. You'll need to verify the maximum allowable rpm on the bearings. Then unless your blade has deep gullets, the teeth may not clear at that speed on thicker material. The gullet gives the sawdust a place to stay until the tooth comes out the other side, then it must fall from the gullet to clear the tooth. That high of speed may carry sawdust back into the cut instead of slinging it clear. These old ones here run an arbor speed of 600 to 700(max) rpm and as you can see it does a fair job, even on larger diameter. I limit my cuts to 8'' or 9'' in diameter. I would think the maximum rpm for buzz saw styles of machines top out around 900 to 1000 rpm on new equipment with new components.
      Of course running an electric motor you will have to be concerned with full load amps of the motor (now its called RLA or running load amps). Would that be 360 volts 3 phase 50 Hz over in Estonia ? Or is it 230 volt three phase or singe phase 50 Hz. I think that most of Europe is 50 hz. And I thought a lot of places were 360 volts. Anyway, easy rpm adjustments would be with simple sheave changes though. I'd calculate the diameter needed, then select an adjustable dual sheave for the drive motor to accomplish the first phase of rpm adjustment. Might only have to buy one sheave for a change that way. Good Luck and let me know what you do to make it work safely and reliably.

      @@tractorman4461 We have 400v 3 phase 50Hz and 240v between neutral and phase. Engine is 4 kW, it's about 5,3 hp. Don't know what bearings are in there but they are pretty big. Bearing bracket diameter is about 4 inch, shaft diameter is about 1,8 inch. I allready have pulleys on shaft and on electic motor i have pulley with minimum allowed diameter for B profile V-belt. I think at first i do test start and will see what bearings do and how blade behave. It's hard to change pulley on saw blade shaft.
      For 25" blade 1500-1600 RPM is good speed if it's modern blade. My buzzsaw blade thoots are maybe little bigger than you have.
      I will let you know how test run will go and on what speed i will go to make saw safe and sound. Thanks for giving your opinion, you make great videos :)

      Hahahaha...yes, its a bit tough on a guy getting a few years under the belt...but I can tell you for sure it beats the alternative !! LOL. Its cool to see the techniques different guys come up with to deal with the wood they process. There are no 'only one way' to do anything because a fellow has to remember there's always a guy with another plan of attack right around the corner !! Thanks for taking a look at the old saw rig.
