      Thanks for stopping by Matt means a lot to me. They are more common then you think. I found this one at an auction but they are all over Craigslist and I am sure with your skills you could build one that would be much better than mine. It's crude but it gets the job done.

    Welcome Ben to the fine world of "cut-off sawing". I was knee high to a beetle when the old man broke me in on the old rig that mounted on the front of a '41 Massey Harris 101 Junior. I've easily got 55 yrs plus on one of these things. We'd saw some monstrous slab wood from the old Fisher and Davis 54" circular mill and literally all tree branches from 7"or 8" diameter on down. When you started the thread on adapting this cut-off I fired up one of mine and took numerous short videos for you. Now I have to figure out how to get them posted. I also saw slabs for the wood shed that come off of my little Belsaw 32' mill with 50" circular blade.
    Btw.. you have done a great job on this rig. That little engine sure makes the blade sing a tune thats sweet to the ears!!!!! In the comments on one of your prior videos, I think I gave you the basic math for figuring blade rpm. Hope that helps you in the future.

      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад +1

      I appreciate all the advice and help. let me know when you get the videos posted I would like to see them for sure.

    • @tractorman4461

      Yeah, I will. Just gotta force myself to figure out all the settings and stuff.... one thing I'd like to suggest for your consideration is that because this old saw is probably 60, maybe 70 years old, you may want to just feel the bearing housings after you've ran it at this speed a while. I think its running a bit faster than designed and if so excessive heat may build up in those bearings. If you see the grease liquify and start dripping out...she's a little on the warm side. If they stay cool, well heck just give it hell and keep on cutting.
      Like I said in my first comment...that blade sure sings a tune !!

    Few; Ben I feel like I been cutting firewood. Yet I am using flick to make slats for chain link fencing. Not sure when I’ll cut firewood. The more I mill wood the more uses I find for what I cut. I feel like you are a neighbor and we’re having sone fun!

    That blade cuts with such precision and your wood is stacked so neatly. This makes short work of a big job. Too bad it started raining as you were on a roll with cutting that pile of slab wood. Thanks for sharing.

    All the safety training I've gone through at work screams out how sketchy this is but dang that saw does an awesome job ripping thru that pile of wood! All the best!

      I plan to put guards on it at some point. it gets the job done for now.

    Great job on the buzz saw now all you need is a couple of ICB cages to put the fire wood into to save you from stacking

    Man! That thing works great! WAY better than a chainsaw for sure. I may have to look into one of those. Thanks for sharing the demonstration and build. Rain is headed our way, you must be sending it to me, lol. I am going to work on getting my mill ready for cutting today and by tomorrow afternoon hope to e ready for some milling. Sorry for the delay on the friendly race. I have been racing against mother nature trying to get ready for winter. Got another wood shed to build today and hope to get the wood in it before it rains tomorrow. Its supposed to clear up by noon, so I should be in good shape for some milling!

    Hi Ben: New Canadian subscriber here - I admire your ingenuity in getting the saw working. Watched the slabs video and I would kill for some of those slabs. Virtually black ash is the only colorful wood here, apart from southern Ontario where there are a lot more hardwoods.

    I think when the weather-man says there's a 20% chance of rain it means there's a 100% chance that 20% of your area is gonna get wet. It just so happened you were in that 20% area that got wet.

    awsome set up i love it ...here is a sugestion for slabs that are like 18 to 20 inches long ...measure back from the blade 16 inches and use a magic marker to mark the fence ...also i have a question since i have no expirience with these buck saws ...do you think a serpentine belt would be better and gear it down just a tad ?...im hopeing to have a set up like that oneday

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад +1

      Not sure Grizz I am making this stuff up as I go along. I need to do something with it the v belt slips but for now it's working. Work in progress I say.

    Where did you get your blade from I just got started running a 30 inch old steel one but looks like yours has a carbide tipped blade on it

  • @STMwoodturning
    @STMwoodturning 6 лет назад

    Looking at some of the slabs you made into firewood, wouldn't it be worth the effort to re-mill the wider ones by trimming the live edges off and making a board out of it? That would make your the yield from each log higher and cut down on the waste material.

  • @tractorman4461
    @tractorman4461 6 лет назад +1

    Ben if I may make another comment... one thing you'll soon find out is that when you let the 'off fall' pile just a little too high a piece will inadvertently fall or slide back into the blade and create a split second of havoc. It'll be grabbed by the teeth and kick quickly out towards the front of the saw sometimes with a loud bang and a deliver a quick shudder through the rig. It's only exciting the first time. lolol Redundantly, may I say yer doin good kid!!!
    Btw...HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!!

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад +1

      I am always up for another comment. I plan to make some kind of guard on the saw at some point and might even make a slide type chute off the outside for the cut off to slide down, not sure yet. Thanks again for all your input. Happy Thanksgiving.

    Adding 2 or 3 5lb dumbell weights added to the belt side will allow the blade to stay spinning faster and speed back up faster.

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад

      Someone else made this same suggestion. I think it's a good idea. The problem is I don't have any weights laying around and I'm not sure how I would attach them to the shaft. I appreciate the suggestion. it is a work in progress and I am sure I will make some modifications to it in the future. Thanks for watching and giving me ideas for improvement.

    where did you buy that blade for your buzzsaw? Looks like a new one. Also how much does a new one cost ? I need a 28 inch blade with a 1 and 3/8 arbor hole

    Build some guards for the blade and pulleys. Safety first! Also, did you pack out the space between the anti-vibration pieces and the bushing you made for the blade to make up the diff in arbor size. Don't want that bushing dislodging and having that blade wobbling around..

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад +1

      I was waiting for someone to complain about safety, congratulations your the first

    • @augustreil
      @augustreil 6 лет назад

      Did you weld that bushing in so it won't come out ? Thanks.

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад +1

      august, nope I did not. the clamps are on the out side of the blade. the bushing is not being used to hold the blade only to position it till the clamps are tightened down on it. I have cut a few cords of wood without an issue. People may not like my methods remember this is not a how to video just an invite to join me in my daily adventures.

    It's certainly an effective tool for cutting your sawmill slab wood into firewood. On the thicker pieces the motor seemed to bog down some. Where did you get a circular saw blade that size?

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад

      Came off a machine going to the junk yard. I was lucky enough to snag it from the hopper. and yeah it does bog down some but that gives me something to improve on later. Thanks for watching.

    I live in PA also in the Westmoreland county I was wondering how much you sold a pallet full of wood and how much wood is it like a half cord or full cord

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад

      Usually the going rate is around 120 for a full cord. I was selling it for around 80 dollats uncut lengths but I'm in Columbia county and I don't think it would be worth the drive for you unfortunately. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.

    In your opinion, how hard can it be to build a buzzsaw from scratch?

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад

      Not hard at all if you have a metal lathe and some stock material. the key slots in the shafts for the belt sheaves and the plates and bolt for holding the blade on would be the hard part. other than that it's just a motor and a blade with some bearings in-between.

    • @thefirewooddoctor
      @thefirewooddoctor 6 лет назад +1

      Bens sawmill Will try to find a good buzzsaw, then worry about trying to power it with a small gas engine. Maybe get lucky and find one that only needs a gas engine and will take standard off the shelf parts.

    Wouldn't you need a water lubricating system on that saw like you have on your band saw ?

    • @Benssawmill
      @Benssawmill  6 лет назад +1

      do you need one on a table saw? I haven't had any issues yet and I used it for hours at a time already. it's different because it's not buried in the wood for long periods of time.
