one of the most chill and professionally done videos on this topic (and in knife making in general). Well done, got heaps of information out of this video. Keep up the great work :)
I know this is very old but first in my how to recommendations. I'm glad too because you just saved me a ton of time! Straight to the point. I had no idea it was this simple 🤣.
Man! Thank you so much for this video. I looked and looked forever to figure out how to do the actual stencil and never found anything except for paying someone on etsy to make them for me. Now I know how to di my own.
Your video popped up in my feed. Great stuff. Thank you! And big props for shouting out to Tyler. It’s all about the kids. Hopefully he’s making knives these days.
Likely that the developer solution is diluted sodium hydroxide. I used to make my own in a milk bottle. 1 level teaspoon of sodium hydroxide crystals (used for drain cleaner) and a pint of water. I used to make my own PCBs with a photoresist coat that needed the same UV exposure as you show. You can buy it in a spray can. Anyway you expose photoresist to UV like you did and then develop in sodium hydroxide soln. Then rinse thoroughly. This is going back 30 years ago but I'm sure the chemistry hasn't changed that much.
Brother Jeremy, incredibly educational! seriously. I actually met with a sales rep yesterday that had a similar Etching machine but several times more expensive and only worked will with aluminum and Stainless Steel. fantasticly informative!!!
Been watching your videos for a while, great work! Saw this one a few months back and while at a thrift store recently found a brand new Mark 440 stencil maker with all the supplies and knew what it was due to your videos. Military discount Mondays, $7.50!
You can etch any metal that will conduct electricity (aluminum or what ever including stainless). You might want to cut your etching material down to a size you want to use. That saves material and also keeps your etching material small enough to use. As for logos etc... anything with a really fine line might not come out because of the light bypassing the ink on the plastic. Try it before you do it on your knife. AS for etching verses marking... I only use the etching when I am going to coat my blades with CeraKote... then I can see my maker mark under the coating. Cheers.
Thanks for this very easy to understand process of making your own stencils. I was wondering if you still use the same products to do this or have found anything you like better over the years?
Excellent video my friend. Truly one of the best I have seen on YT about etching knives. I have spent tons of time researching and practising this myself. I had to settle on the semi-home-brew method as I wasn't able to fork out the dollars to buy The Personalizer and stencil maker. I use a CB radio power supply, q-tips, and salt-water to etch. I did buy some professionally made stencils that are reusable. I get acceptible results, but NOT nearly as good as those you showed on the video. Thanks for showing this! Atb! ...Nathan
Thanks Nathan! I tied ordering stencils but after waiting for several weeks for a few companies I emailed to get back to me, I finally decided I can't wait and better just sort it out myself. I bought the etcher sort of on a whim (I wanted one for a long time and when I was picking up my kiln at knifemaker.ca I saw it on the self and couldn't resist) but I also tired a few things and sort of got decent results. I'm really impressed with these two though and I'm quite happy with out they turn out. But the good news for you, if you EVER need some stencils done up, I've got you covered buddy! Cheers!
Thanks so much Jeremy! I may take you up on that offer someday. You are getting so close to 20k subs, that's awesome....I think I subbed when you had about 850! All the best!
I use nail polish, a sharp nail, cotton bud, salt dissolved in vinegar, and a 9 volt battery with alligator clips, works well but you need a steady hand to get your mark to look nice.
Nice. I never tried the vinegar part but it makes sense that it would help out the process. I tried the nail polish but didn't get the results I was looking for. It's funny how some people try something and it works awesome, and then next person tries something and can't get it sorted. That's awesome you're having good results with the less complicated process. Cheers!
What is the name of the kit you use? To make the stencils. Also the etching kit? What transparency do you need for an ink jet printer? Thanks. Good video. Paul
Great vid and thanks for doing this. I was already wondering how to do this properly so I could signature my hard work! Thanks again for all the help. +1
I saw the answer to my question when I looked back at the video. Any advice on durability if the knife is going to be used going though wood? Will the Mark setting scrape off?
How many times do you reuse your stencils or do you? Also, watch out for moving your carbon brush past the edge of your stencil... hahaha... I've marked the edge of the stencil... If you make such a mistake, no problem, just sand it off. It comes off fairly easy and you can re-do your marking.
I'm going to figure out how to etch gimping on the spine of my knives and checkering on my metal handle knives. My stencil will need to be crisp and precise.
So you say start with a minute for the light but not why. What happens if you expose for 2 minutes? Can you show what happened in this case? is the 2 minutes for maybe a larger design maybe, Lets say a image on the face of the work piece that is 1" x 1"?
Hey Jeremy.. Shout out to ya from Bowness.. I also watch your show all the time. I was wondering if I could interest you in leather knife sheaths? I'm an avid leather worker who knows how to make them. I watch your channel to learn how to make knives.. I guess what I'm saying is if you ever get an order for a leather knife sheath I can hook you up.. I'm good with barder/trading..lol
Yeah for sure! That would be rad! I've had some requests for leather sheaths recently and I've been making more knives lately that are not well suited for a utilitarian kydex sheath. We should certainly hook up and see what we can come up with. I'll see if I can figure out how to send you a RUclips msg. Cheers!
For home gamers there are much easier non proprietary and safe ways to etch polish and plate fyi. you want plug and play this is an option... one of many
Forgot it was Tuesday l wish l was at the skill to do that to my knives but l engrave my knives please give me a shout out love Wat do so much 1 day l will get 1 thank you

Well thank you very much! I really appreciate it and I'm glad you found it useful. Cheers!

Right on. I still use this every week and it’s going strong.

oh yeah, Hockey season! Looks amazing! You work and the care you put into each project always shows. Great video!
Thanks! And woohoo for hockey right?! Cheers buddy!
Brother Jeremy,

fantasticly informative!!!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate the encouragement. Really. I wish more people commented like you do. Cheers!

Thanks for another great tutorial! Your videos and style are really nice and clear.
Keep it up!
Thank you very much. I really appreciate the compliments. Seriously. I wish more people left comments like yours. Cheers!
i really enjoy your channel, especially these tool ones. you seem very knowledgeable and I learn a lot, but it also feels like I am learning with you.
I did a double take because my name is Tyler so I was like "what?" great video and awesome etching.

Great instructional video! Thanks Jeremy.
Dude you're videos are sooo helpful! Thank you!
That is great to thank you! Best part of making them is knowing they help 👍

Those etch and mark basically the current. To etch use direct current DC, and mark uses alternating current AC

Looks good! I want to learn that stuff! Thanks
Can you do gray scale like they did in newspapers with the little black dots?
What is the name of the kit you use? To make the stencils. Also the etching kit? What transparency do you need for an ink jet printer?
Thanks. Good video.
Paul
That was a great video. Keep up the good work.
Wow I've learned so much about this just now thank you
Great info, Thanks. I purchased my stencils from Ernie, but I am thinking about making my own from now on. That will give me a greater variety.
Great video! Would it be possible to use a Cricut to create a stencil that will stick?
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. :-)
great info..best I've seen by far.
Great vid and thanks for doing this. I was already wondering how to do this properly so I could signature my hard work! Thanks again for all the help. +1
Can you help me where to find the water used in the knife instead of water and salt?
How many times can you use that stencil before it gets all weird? Id like to mark all my tools but I have hundreds
Nice..I love it 😍😍👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
How much does it coast?
Great info. Glad I found your channel, you put out some good content.
Thank you very much!
Where can we buy a large carbon brush like yours please ?
I have no idea. Mine came with my etcher
I want to make stensles for etching!
What current are you using?
The blue stuff is called photo resist
How does it work on stainless steel
Do you use the etch or the mark setting? I have a personalizer but if I only use Mark, it wipes off.
I saw the answer to my question when I looked back at the video. Any advice on durability if the knife is going to be used going though wood? Will the Mark setting scrape off?
How can I buy the blue wax paper ?
As for clean up afterward... I don't use windex nor the supplied neutralizer... I use WD 40. Works GREAT!!
Did you try the Brother P-touch PT-P700 method? That looks much easier to do than this one.
How many times do you reuse your stencils or do you? Also, watch out for moving your carbon brush past the edge of your stencil... hahaha... I've marked the edge of the stencil... If you make such a mistake, no problem, just sand it off. It comes off fairly easy and you can re-do your marking.
curious as to where you get your fluid?
Is there a cheap way of making a band saw
I'm not sure. I suppose there has to be but I honestly haven't tried. Cheers!
great video, keep it up!
clothespins are another way to hold things in place
can you do stainless steel with this?
Ole Geister Probably. Anything that will corode in salt water. Maybe you should have the electrode in contact for longer.
I'm going to figure out how to etch gimping on the spine of my knives and checkering on my metal handle knives. My stencil will need to be crisp and precise.
dimna saya bisa beli alat ini??
great video! Thanks for the info!!
Thank you and you’re welcome! 👍

Thank you!

I will have to show you the electronic etcher I built its great

For home gamers there are much easier non proprietary and safe ways to etch polish and plate fyi. you want plug and play this is an option... one of many
I use the same method as shelly does
That's great. Wish I had better luck with those methods (maybe I should have just kept at it longer.....). Cheers!
Where's the next vid, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms
Your absolutely right but most of us don’t have $400-$1,000 to just drop Lol I REALLY Want a laser etcher but those are $1,000-$3,000 grand 😢

hahaha! I was excited for a minute. But then when you said just kidding maybe kind of relieved:) Cheers!

Forgot it was Tuesday l wish l was at the skill to do that to my knives but l engrave my knives please give me a shout out love Wat do so much 1 day l will get 1 thank you
Well do it. Don't talk about it.
