We are talking about it’s strengths, weaknesses, and why I think most people should get and keep this lens for their GH5.

I truly hesitated between a second hand Olympus 12-40mm II and the Panasonic 12-60mm F2-4. They were both going for 399$ in my local store which is a bargain…I ended up with the Panasonic more 4 reasons : the reach provided better bokeh at 60mm F4 than 40mm F2.8, the stabilizer is extremely useful in video on a Panasonic body, and the lens appears to be parafocal and focuses almost like a macro lens. While a miss the extra stop of light, I am happy with the reach and bokeh and the stabilization. A perfect lens would have been a 10-50mm F2 or 12-60mm F2…😅

I wonder if you set your background light to something more contrasty, maybe the AF won't wonder off...? Dope lens. This focal range is super versatile for solo shooters and way more useful than 12-35 (24-70 IMO). I'm using the Canon 24-105 version 2 w/ my GH5s. I think from what Ive seen the 12-40 isnt as parfocal as this. The 12mm end and the 40mm end are perfect but as you zoom somewhere in the middle there are a few issues. Same with the Lumix 12-35 and Olympus 40-150. The extreme ends are the same but there's some certain amount of shifting. Id love to try the Oly out sometime!

Hi Rhet, pls your reaction on the following. My present combo is gh5, fw 2.7 and the 14-140mm. I am thinking of buying the leica or the lumix 12-60.
2.8-4.0 vs 3.5-56 is not as much of an issue too me. More important is AF hunting/pulsing and stabilisation, AF/zooming.
My gripes with the 14-140 are sticky zoomring, AF/zooming. 10x zoom is nice to have, but I rarely use it.
I realy like the IQ, at 14 mm the AF near to far is lightning fast.
So, I am looking for an solid upgrade in AF and stabilisation.
Pls, your thoughts, thank you, Frans/Bali 😀👍

  • @goto032492

I think the 2.8-4 leica lens family and olympus f4 epitomizes the biggest mistake of the m43 system, lack of system wide dual stabilization support and Panasonic's dfd auto focus algorithm requiring information from (or about?) the lens. Matching body and lens manufacturing is just generally so much more attractive. It is also an issue for the L mount.

Rhett, you write about "macro" but it is not a true macro i.e. 1 to 1 reality size versus screen size (?). What you are really saying is that you can take nice close-up shots but that is not the same thing...

Both 12-60 12-100 have OIS, but 12-60 is a bit brighter at the wide end and 12-100 has a manual clutch. Couldn't decide which one to get. How is focus breathing between these two? I have a question. I need a Wide angle Lens. I´m filming and photograph with my GH5 abandoned places like Vlogging (low light!) and have a 12-60 Kit (no leica). I need a lens that is good in low light in filming and Photo. Now I dont no what to buy, I´m thinking about the 10-25 f1.7, I no its big but I have no problem with that. It must just be also good in automatic mode because I film fast and I have to focus on other things because it can be very dangerous some places. Can you help me and recommend wich lens to choose adn why? P.S. sorry for bad english and Thx!

I think the Leica 10-25 should do you justice, its one of the faster AF lenses for panasonic and had really good low light etc. You might be able to make the Leica 8-18 work but it isnt nearly as good in low light or as versatile. As someone wanting to do 3 camera interview or event stuff, 3 bodies, the 12, the 25 1.4, the 42.5 1.7, the oly 75, and the 35-100...cover me for most. I have the 20 pancake on a gx85 (with the 42.5 in the other pocket) for incognito, and the 100-300 just in case I ever need that length. Just sold the Laowa 7.5 today, hardly used it. Partly to fund another GH5 for the G7 I sold yesterday. I try not to think about a short zoom, I found the 12-35 underwhelming and soft at 12, but this video has me torn again. 12-60 f4 parfocal at events would really take the pressure off...thanks for the video and the chat.
