  • This is a home video shot on somebody's front porch of a young Dickey Betts jamming on a blues number. The date I have on it is 1974. The location is listed is Germany, but I have my doubts on that. Still a very rare cool clip! Take a minute and check it out.

Saw Dickie and GS play a snowbound blizzard show for fifteen or so of us in Northern Virginia about twenty some years back, they played it like a private party, for two hours. Played hard, any song they or we wanted to hear or play. Hung out with us, danced and jammed. The best show I've ever seen. What a great dude, and everyone in the band was into it and awesomely cool. It was a great party. I'll never ever forget.

What lists? Last time I checked some, and its been some years, he was in just about everybody's top 100. I can't see that changing much. I think Dickie is top notch. I think people know hes good and respect him, he just doesn't get talked about at all. Im sure he dont care. Maybe it has something to do with the fact theres really no drama in his personal history outside of the band that really went public. Im just finding it hard to believe hes been bumped outta every list. I bet hes still in Guitar Players and Rolling Stones top 100, unless you don't consider them relevant.

@@bluecollar825 No hate on Dickey but he did get kicked out of the ABB and for good reason. Drugs and alcohol. I have seen him with the ABB and he was great. I also seen him in a small club in my hometown many years ago and the show was terrible. He was jacked up on either alcohol or drugs or both. It was the worst show I have ever seen. It was so bad I confronted him face to face and told him so. He was just so out of it. I left the show very sad. He was my idle and that night it seemed like he was washed up. I am happy to see through RUclips he continues to play and make great music. He is talented artist and I hope all the issues are behind him. I still love his music and wish him the best. I wish I would have been more kind that night so many years ago, he obviously was going through something.

The chap in the middle in the white t-shirt is Bob Harris from England. He was making a feature on American Southern Rock for a BBC TV programme called The Old Grey Whistle Test, and I saw this clip on TV back in the 70s. He interviewed Dickey Betts, who talked, among other things, about Robert Johnson's guitar technique and played Crossroads Blues, if I remember right.

I can tell you who the other two guys are. the guy in the middle is Bob Harris from the BBC and the other one is me. My name is Joe English and I was staying at the farm house at Idlewild South at the time. One of Dickey's longtime friends Sid Yochim had formed a band that consisted of David Warsaw on drums and Stray Stratton on bass who had played on Dickey's Highway Call album and myself on Pedal Steel and lead guitar. Dickey came by the farm house that morning and asked me to play guitar with him for the interview. We did several songs but some were edited out. I grew up in Daytona Beach and knew Duane and Gregory Allman back in the younger years even before the Allman Joys days when they were the Escorts, back in the mid teen years. I got to know Dickey in the late 60s through Joe Dan Petty from Grinder's Switch. We were in a band together around that time in Jacksonville, Florida when Dickey and Berry were in The Second Coming. I could write a book but I won't.
