- Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers plays two songs, joined on the second tune by Stray Cat Brian Setzer (playing a signature Pete Townshend Schecter), in a performance filmed in Passaic, New Jersey 11-20-84 and later broadcast on late night TV. Also in the band is pianist and Allman Brothers vet Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Sea Level), and bassist Kenny Aaronson (HSAS, Bob Dylan, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Rick Derringer). You can find more of this set by searching BetaGems for "Brian Setzer & Dickey Betts 11-20-84 PT 2 late night TV performance."

BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area. - Развлечения
We lost one of the best guitar players Dickey Betts was the Master of the Instrumentals and Beautiful tone .Play it loud for the Angels Dickey
tone was awesome for sure
Sometimes the RUclips algorithm strikes pure gold. This is one of those times.
One of the rare times I see Dickey smile and have fun. And it’s all due to the infectious talent and good spirits of Brian !!!! Awesome
Shiiiit. That made me pick up my guitar and jam along. I miss MUSIC.
Amen. Musicians jamming…autotune was far on the horizon. Glad to born in the age of music
This made me very happy today! RIP Dickey.
I’d really like to meet Jessica, Melissa, Martha, and Elizabeth Reed! These women have some special songs written about them!!
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Dickie smiles.
No egos, just two master guitarists at the top of their game having a blast. No backing tracks, no auto tune, just pure talent,
David Craft, When they were playing "Mellissa" it seems to me that I heard Twin Harmony notes, when he played his Gibson he was only using single notes, (it was not the piano or keyboard) so was there another guitar in the background???? just asking for a friend
@@11calman I guess you missed that pedal board next to the mic stand eh????? Asking for a friend.
@@steveeckert8396 My Friend is such a drongo, he says he plays guitar but not very good if he missed that clue,, maybe say Hi ruclips.net/video/DgretiFUO7g/видео.html

@NakedMoleRat 43 Haha, can you guys play cricket, Don't think so. But your right about the Music Mate,, Happy new year
RIP Dickie! 😢
Allman Brothers were never the same without Dickey. Love his playing
Totally Agree! He was their Sound!!
@@ginnywhat5777 ... Yes the Tone! Awesome Tone!!
You could listen to 100 guitar solos blindfolded and you would no trouble picking out which one was him.
Betts was drunk and violent so Greg Allman had to dismiss him from the band. Jaimoe couldn't even be in the same room with him.
The magic of the Allman Brothers didn’t rest with any single player; Duane and Dickey challenged each other and continually raised their playing. Butch, Barry, and Jaimoe were probably the greatest rhythm section in rock in roll. Greg’s key board work wasn’t incredible but his emotive vocals overshadowed those inadequacies. It was a group of greats, a sum more than the parts.
Lots of great bands fall apart bc ego takes over and one member thinks they’re the sole reason behind the greatness.
God bless dickie betts and god bless the allman brothers and god bless the united states of america
RIP Dicky... What a boss you were
Watching the unbridled joy emanating from both Dicky and Brian gives me chills. Setzer channeling Danny Gatton and Betts being Betts... what a great moment.
Gatton 👍X10
The bass player is BEYOND outstanding
Ironically, earlier in this show he had to back up David Gilmore for the song "Murder" off of About Face. He had a bit of an issue during the bass solo...there is only one Pino Palladino I guess.
But what was that hairdo about? lol!
Kenny Aaronson of Stories and Derringer fame.
@@BloomingdaleTN And HSAS. Billy Idol, and Joan Jett.
@@BloomingdaleTN Not any better than Kenny. I have been a giant Derringer fan since I saw them embarrass Aerosmith in 76 and saw those guys pretty much dust anyone they backed up . Major influence on my guitar playing. Stories Brother Louie ,live is a bass lesson too
Dickey makes it look easy.Never misses a note.Bass player is laying it down.
😢😢😢 R.I.P. Dickey, one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar and he influenced so many. What a sad day in music history
With that hair do, you’d better lay it down. Excellent display for sure

Brian Setzer Orchestra is by far the most entertaining show I've seen.... the man is both a superior showman and a guitar God
Saw him and the Orchestra at First Avenue a long time ago.
Blew me away...a one of a kind talent.
Brian wrote all the charts for the entire orchestra.
Dickie Betts is one of the all time greats, and kind of underrated. Smooth, fast and incredibly melodic. Love it!
I couldn't agree more. Just amazing
Brian Setzer amazing also!
@@Dan-zq5wt yes he is
Dickie Betts IS MELODY~!~!~!~
When Dickie went up the fretboard leading with his pinky Brian had to shake his head in awe. Dickie had to pull out the stops. Incredible playing by noth of them.
Oh dickie your one of the best.you made my 70s 80s some of the.best years .bless you dickie amen ❤
Betts makes his playing look effortless. His sounds is clean, complex and layered. He appreciates his band and they he. He's a serious musical force.
I could certainly see it on his face after the piano solo! His sliding is beyond incredible! Super smooth!! Still my favorites are One Way Out, Hoochie Koochie Man, live at the Fillmore. Done Somebody Wrong
sounds like the cover of a book jacket
Dickey's smile at the end of it, is what it's all about!
Michael Shrieve (Santana) on the drums - bringing it. His drum solo from Soul Sacrifice in the Woodstock movie is pure fire - he was only 19 years old at the time.
good catch, wow, yea I remember watching that along time ago and being impressed by him
Chuck on keys
I thought I recognized him. Yep.
That's him!? Wow, cool.
And Neil schon was only 16 with Santana.
Chuck Leavell is incredible!
Thanks for reminding me, my memory blew a fuse trying to remember that! He plays great on this tune! Absolutely wonderful.
Awesome rock and roll legend. Not too often mentioned diamond in the rough. Like Bobby Keys.
Muchas gracias Dickey por toda la musica que nos diste y disfrutamos. Que Dios te vendige.
Thank you for this gem. I love how Setzer comes out feeding off the energy of Betts. That's what it is like to play on stage when the band is hot. Note how Dickey uses vibrato on his playing hand throughout to get the piercing sustain, his tone is near perfect. Just a bit of distortion with a nice clean breakthrough on the lead, that's the tone I have modeled for my lead playing and in guitar amps I design and build. He helped revolutionize lead guitar playing and just watching his fingers move on the fretboard is entrancing. To me, not just because he and Duane influenced me the most and others I know, they are one of the pioneers of the country rock genre, the real stuff not the fluff.
Yeah you hit the nail on the head....totally agree...Setzer is digging Dickey and the energy playin off each other. On another note is why I always loved Toys playin and the tone he had with his thumb...nothin like it!
One hundred years from now, music professors will still be trying to disseminate what is happening here. My God, what guitar greatness!
Thanks for the Kenny Aaronson shoutout. Dude is a legendary bassist.
RIP Dickey Betts 12/12/1943 - 4/18/2024. He and Duane are jamming again.
👍✝️
Now, all of them are there jamming except Jaimoe. RIP to all of the departed Brothers!
But where are they?
@@jamesbusch282 somewhere we're not yet
Hope Berry, Butch and Gregg are all with them.
Everybody who likes music should listen to this at least once in their life.fire!
the best driving song ever
Dickey smiling while playing with Brian.... magic. Thanks for sharing this . Fantastic
It's fantastic seeing the enjoyment and soul flowing from them all.
He always had a melodic feel to a lot of his solo work....
Stray Cats meets The Allman Brothers! Brian Setzer completely underrated.
I never met anyone who listened to the Stray Cats and, afterward, underrated Brian Setzer.
Underrated????? By who???? Do you understand the meaning of underrated????
Underrated? Have you ever heard his big band? Talk about SMOKIN'!
@@jcripp7974 I understood him to mean that when "great guitar players" comes up, Setzer is not usually mentioned. He's an amazing guitarist...one of my faves.
I always thought Brian was retro style in the 80's.
The 50's style, with pure rock n role.
Never listened to Stray Cats back then but always saw them on MTV.
Everytime i see the guy he's rippin on guitar.
Just sayin i've never bought his music however ,i know hes a badass talent.
End of the Line today for Dickey April 18, 2024 ....80yo at his home in Osprey, FL.... very very very sad.... Phish plays Sphere Las Vegas starting tonite wish they would pay tribute....
A sad day in music history, he influenced so many
What a double gem ! Betts beautiful solo 1st song and then jamming with Brian next ! Tremendous !!
That was awesome. Two guitarist I have a high regard for (as a guitarist). Dicky can play with anyone, and it's more of a crossover for him to do Rockabilly. He does a great job just blending in the Jam and his runs are wonderfully locked in. Brian is right in his element here (trust me, it wouldn't be the same Brian playing In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. But when it comes to boogie, Brian is top notch in his craft, and I'm talking the world over. That Massapequa boy can Rock it!. Thank You for posting, and Thank You Brian and Dicky for laying down some of the best guitar chops in the Biz! Tremendous. Stay well all.
Rare time with Brian Setzer not playing a Gretsch guitar. He chicken picks the Hell out of a Telecaster instead, and reminds all that he's one of the All-Time Greats of Guitar since his early twenties. He's Danny Gatton Good at the end of this video, after the great Jessica take by Dickie and his band (with Chuck Leavell tearing up the keys).
R.I.P. Dickey, thank you so much for teaching me so much about the guitar, music and Life!!!
🙏😔🎸🎼🎵🎶🇺🇸🔥🌹❤
Dickey’s nod at about 2 seconds in is code “you all MFers ready for this!”😊
he was SO good
All those lead licks . . played in the rhythm position - gorgeous tone.
I believe Brian wrote The knife feels like justice in tribute to Dicky, about the same year as well. I have this entire show taped on Betamax somewhere 🤣
I hope you post it someday.
What a gem! Never saw this video before. Saw the Allman Bros 3X in the late 70's and in 2004 and have I always had the upmost respect for Brian Setzer as a GREAT guitarist. Most people who remember the Stray Cats from the 1980's have no idea what a great guitarist he is.
Brian Setzer is just a great guitarist and American treasure
Dickey Betts had magic hands.
OMG!!!!! This is some next level talent! RIP Dickey
One of the two guitarists that could keep up with Dwane Allman .
Beautiful playing! Dicky's old '57 Gold top is just a sangin'! And Mr Setzer's playing is off the chain as usual! Thx for the share!
The Allman brothers band was one of a kind for sure. Great.
They appeared to have a great time playing together - fun to watch people having genuine fun!
Dickey Betts was my favorite part of the ABB.
Duane knew he had a winning combination when Dickey showed up for their first jam with all the original members of the Allman Brothers.
Love Betts. I knew Setzer was a good guitarist but I didn’t know he was great until I saw him n Jeff Beck’s Rock N Roll Party concert.
Those 5 should have started a band! Dear Lord what a jam!!
2 of my favorite guitarists in a jam I thought I'd never see. Brilliant!
Dickie told Brian before the show, son I'm used to jamming with the great Duane Allman so you better bring your A game. Brian says, I only have an A game! Great performance!
He was not kidding......
brian gave a country music lesson that nite..hes untouchable 30 years later
Amen!
@@michaelriley7064 yup...so right...young gifted guy... I probably saw in live for the first time around that time
So, you were there, or is this just bullshit talkin... se RL's post above.
Good gracious, this is seriously one of the greatest things I've seen EVER on RUclips. Just Wow.
Thanks for the great music Dickie. We love and remember you always.
i look into the crowd and say wow I was in a band in the 80s what a normal time to be young and alive thank you God
The smile on Dickie's face........priceless
Broadcast on my first birthday. I inherited my love of Dickey Betts' material from my father and grandpa.
They have great taste in music, cheers.
Amen brother
Beautiful version of Jessica--absolutely one of Dickey's best and with Chuck Leavell! Thank you for sharing!
Interesting to see this duo. Not surprising, just unexpected. The audience is so calm. If I was there, I'd be climbing over everything to be as close as I could possibly be. I saw Dickey Betts about 8 years ago and didn't have to climb over anything, just had to be there early. It was just beautiful to see a legend 10 feet away and watch him display his masterful control of his craft as I have been blessed to have seen many others of our time.
I admire that you said blessed that is exactly what it is I have seen Dickey 11 times 9 with the Allman Brothers and twice with Great Southern and I too feel blessed as I did with all the great ones of my generation that I had the pleasure to see live.
@@1979bobhd
I'm getting the impression that we're both about the same age and as time goes on, especially this year with this whole pandemic madness how many unbelievable musicians that we have lost! And something that may be ridiculous to some other people is that I have had the pleasure of seeing the Allman Brothers more than a dozen times I seen DICKY live with his own band GREAT SOUTHERN and what KILLED me was when that month's ROLLING STONE magazine came out - they had some chick comedian on the cover instead of Gregg! Couldn't figure that out since the man knew that he was dying and he toured until he COULDN'T STAND! So you know what a SHAME ON THEM that is BUT - I think we're so LUCKY to have had so many beautiful musicians to go and see and cherish! I remember being at the Ritz in NYC with my beer literally sitting on the stage while Greg played his B3 ( opening for BB King and then of course playing with B.B. as well in the second set!!! ) I remember like yesterday and I can't even imagine I lucky me and my old lady were to have that opportunity along with so many others! Can you imagine that I was standing 5 FEET AWAY and Gregg had a bowl of lemons cut up sitting on the top of his rig. MAYBE his voice was blown or just hoarse? I don't know but he sounded phenomenal and I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to see all these great players - being a Guitarist myself! We're just lucky and I feel sorry for these kids today!
ROCK and RIDE ON MY BROTHER...!!! 🙏💖💯🛐🛐🛐☮️
Superb musicianship by Mr Richard Betts.
Brian Setzer has been such a guitar master from the start of his career. What he really did was completely reinvigorate roots playing in a way that just blew doors and yet he never got the accolades of people like Stevie Ray Vaughn and he truly was as deserving or more. He just played tasty and mean and sophisticated rockabilly, country, jazz, and every style in between with utter mastery.
Agreed. The thing is that I don't think rockabilly is taken very seriously by many people. Its mostly about having a great time. So, Setzer may be an artist but he kinda of chose a genre that just doesn't have a lot of credibilly, if you know what I mean. I feel the same way actually about EVH. I lot of people just kind of dismiss him due to the band being essentially just a party band that didn't really give you much to contemplate. But both EVH and Brian are all time greats. Guitarists, at least, know it.
My goodness how legendary is this??!!
How about a thumbs up for the keyboards ! Wow !!! 😆🖒💕
Chuck Leavell who wrote snd played the original
Piano solo on the ABB studio cut. Betts said he should have received a cowriting credit for it. Leavell has been with The Stones since about 1982
The bass player and drummer lay down a canvas for three musical virtuoso painters to fill. Absolutely outstanding!
Dickey had the best moustache in rock history.
Dickey at the top of his game. RIP maestro!
That was an awesome duo both great guitar players
That was BADASS!!! RIP Richard!
Man...at the end...they both knew they nailed that shit.
Still "my all time favorite instrumental " Bless their souls to forever!!!
What a great player Brian Setzer is! I never knew. They both seemed really happy to play together.
That bass player knows his licks now!
Two fantastic guitarists; and Chuck Leavell on Elizabeth Reed just tears it up!
That was Jessica... Not Elizabeth...😮
Good old days.
Two guitar greates are on fire🔥
Love this session🎶😊
They both seemed to genuinely be enjoying themselves on that tune.
You see that smile on Dickey's face when Brian was playing lead.
They wore it out before Brian got plugged in.
Good stuff, all around. Super clean and smooth performance of Jessica. For some of the younger folks, Jessica was a huge hit for the Allman Brothers long, long, before "Top Gear" was even thought about.
I grew up in Massapequa the same time as Brian. All the great music was all around then. I am sure he was thrilled to be on stage with Dickey Betts, a true legend. Stetzer is amazing too. Long Island was a great place to be raised back then.
saw him when thet were the Tom Cats in Belmore
I saw Dickey back in the late 70s when he was touring with “Dickey Betts & the Great Southern”. Killer show.
I was there in Seattle, Washington!
Sweet Virginia
Dude. 👍👍
F**kin A! One of the best guitar clips out here. Thanks for posting!
Brian Setzer and the two other stray cats used to come into Krisches in Massapequa back in the mid, late 70s. I worked there and we thought they were just goofballs in their rockabilly duds. I saw him play in a music store on Sunrise highway and was blown away, but had know idea how much talent he really had until I heard stray cats on WLIR couple years later. Strange watching this cuz my band at the time played a lot of Allman brothers. We had fun and were ok for high school kids but funny how only 6-7 years later he’s on a stage actually jamming with Dicky betts. Thanks for posting this, great stuff.
Bassist Kenny Aaronson is fantastic right from the start, he kicks off this game for Dickey and the rest of the band!
lennnart H. At least someone knows Kenny. I remember him from his old 70s days when he played with the band Dust. One of the best bass players around.
I believe the bass player is Jon Paris who was in Johnny Winter's band for years. Johnny was on that bill that night. I was there.
@@rocktoasties If you look the description say's It's Kenny. Plenty of photos of Kenny on the image site. He did have that silly hair cut for a period. I don't disbelieve you were at the show though I see no proof & hey that's OK it's not what matters here. Kenny was & remains a killer Bass player & his movements are consistent with how he plays. The guy has played with so many top level players & he is in that same caliber. Watch this little clip with him from his early days. Same movements & that killer Bass work. Sorry to disagree here but I do think this is Kenny not Jon. Looking at photos of Jon this really does look more like Kenny than Jon. Even if one of us is wrong this is one fine Bass player & performance. Dickey is suxh a versatile player! He can play whatever he is inspired to play, as this video shows! He is so underrated!
I believe Dickey's upbringing had him play music like that before he found Rock, Blues, and jazz. He brought Country picking roots to the Brothers. He is an extraordinary Musician!
