Id love to learn more about your process! I’m current aging honey in a charred oak level 3 barrel, then I’ll pull it and add a bourbon of my choice. Any advice? Do you filter it? Thanks!
You guys are genuinely the reason I am sincerely enjoying hunting bourbon now. I always liked whiskey, never really purchased bottles. You two are the best I swear lol. Trenton, don't ever change dude.
Bourbon Queen here. Trent cracks me up! I've got the GA bees knees III and love the honey funk on the nose and palate. It's 4 yr Bardstown & 5 yr Green River blended and finished for at least 120 days. The toast is from the honey barrels. 3 were medium toast, 3 were Kelvin heavy char toated. The barrels are reblended & bottled. They use local honey barrels that vary by state. I'm a GA native and darn proud of the SB team.
Being in Metro-Detroit, I've gone through 2 bottles of the Detroit Distilling Honey as I prefer sweeter finishes and flavors. The honey is harvested from Bee's in the D which is a non-profit that works with local businesses to place bee hives on the rooves of several industrial and other buildings all over Metro-Detroit! Also, that same Distilling company works with a co-worker of mine to add bourbon to his BBQ sauce. Also delicious!!!!
Interesting backstory there. I think the best thing I have found coming from Michigan thusfar has been Dragon's Milk Origin, so glad to have found that and I try to restock every time I visit the state.
What a great video! I taught “honey” and had a guest speaker for bee-keeping in my Feasting and Dining In Antiquity class this week, so I shared this video w my students on my Canvas site! What a delight!
Beekeeping is awesome! My grandfather kept bees for over 40 years and I have been for the last 10, a lot more work than collecting bourbon. Great video! 🐝
Trenton, you are so dang funny and the look on Kurt's face as the camera started to record was priceless. You two always are fantastic in your reviews and blinds.
I have been a Beekeeper for over 40+ years. We have between 300 to 400 Beehives. I have never heard of any Beekeeper that store their honey in wood barrels. We use 55 gallon Food Grade coated barrels with a plastic barrel liner.yes the hood can be removed from the bee suite.
Good to see Detroit City Distillery getting some exposure. This year's batch was sweeter then the previous years. I also have the 2020, 2021 and they are better balanced overall. The last couple of years weren't as sweet.
Short Barrel, located in Norcross, GA, is doing some very interesting things in blending and finishing sectors. My newest local store just went down last month and made its very first store pick barrel of an 11-year old bourbon at 118.2% proof and we are all excited for the bottles to come to the store. While we were there, they showed us some barrels of bourbon aging in Buffalo Trace barrels that had been sold for use in aging some imperial stout beer before being shipped to Short Barrell to put some of their product in them.
Another awesome video guys. Kurt’s face was priceless. Thank you guys for laughs this morning great start to my day. I hope that you and your family have a great weekend.
I have the Bee's Knees II & III both are excellent to me but I would have to go with II bc the proof is higher with a lot of flavour and finish too it. The Bee Keeper suit is phenomenal. You guys keep the bourbon community on its toes. Thanks for all you guys do.
Kurt, your reaction to the Nulu price is exactly how I feel about them. Some better than others, all seemingly a bit too pricey for what you get. At least they kept it in the barrel for a while vs the 1-4 weeks for their toasted release! Cheers.
I have the Hubers and love it. I also have one from Woodford and it is horrible absolutely horrible. I would like to try the Bees Knees if I could find it , great video as lays!
I'm fortunate to live down the road from Shortbarrel and Bees Knees is my favorite bourbon. They do some amazing blending and finishing. Their cigar blend is coming out this month and it's freaking amazing
Loved this video. Honey finished is my jam. Only have had the Starlight though. Haven't seen any of the others. Recently got a Three Cords Honey. Still have yet to Crack it open. Great job guys.
Don’t know if you guys have been doing it for a while, but I love adding the approx price when you list what’s being tasted. Brings in another perspective, especially when there’s this big of a disparity.
Love the show! You guys have older bottles in with newer ones, that is not fair. The taste of those bottles that have been open more than a few months will have oxidized some what and will not taste as good as a new one would. It would be so cool for you guys to include the knowledge of oxidizing vs a bottle open just a couple weeks. Please! I would love if you guys started including this in your process. Thanks again. Cheers!
Thanks for the video! Starlight again holds its own. You should know Garrison Bros makes a well regarded (expensive) one, and there is always Jack Daniels Honey which would have been interesting.
Fun fact about the Bees Knees, they release it in 3 states; Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia, each state has a unique blend, and exit proofs, that is then finished in honey barrels from honey producers in that state.
The Augusta Bourbon Society toured the Shortbarrel Distillery in Atlanta Georgia in January. Several outstanding offerings along with their Old Fourth Distillery too.
I grew up in Detroit and enjoy that Detroit City Distillery. I like that they work with a local non-profit to acquire their honey. If you get a chance grab taste the bourbon honey from Bees in the D. Goes great on biscuits!
If it's bourbon before it enters a finishing barrel it's still bourbon. Nothing is getting added to it. And I love this episode. I've been wanting to dabble in finished bourbons and honey is tops on the list. How about a maple barrel episode now. Trenton you are too much. LOL
Interesting how the color of the bourbons looks quite different against the background of Trent's beekeeping suit. I think it is actually a much better way for us, the viewers, to see the color. Although I'm not suggesting that Trent wear this suit every time.
Trenton in the bee suit! 😂🤣 I fairly often get a honey note from bourbon. It'd be interesting - and weird 🙂 - to see what would happen to a bourbon that gives me a honey note if you finished it in a honey barrel. 11:12 When I was in my teens my dad had bees for a while. I used to sit in the grass about 10 feet in front of the hives and watch the bees going in and out. Never once did a bee touch me, though they'd fly by so close I could hear 'em right next to me. 🐝🙂 15:11 I sometimes get buttercream icing from bourbon.
Shortbarrel is doing some really good stuff. Great guys as well. Pretty awesome that they got reviewed by you guys. They have a maple vanilla finish that is also amazing
great video, one question and comment: (1) You should use the Detroit bottle in a gold rush cocktail, would probably be a nice honey bomb to go along with lemon juice (2) Maybe I missed it, but overall is it worth picking up a honey barrel in general? understand this is pretty dependent on everyone's flavor profile. I definitely wouldn't drop $150 for that NULU bottle.
Cheers boys. Just picked up a bottle of sagamore rye double oaked. The first rye I've tried . Sal Skol , slainte , tainte , and Nostrovia ! Love you guys .
Absolutely love the video and so glad you did the honey finished blind. I've been waiting to see this done. I'm curious how Garrison Brothers Honey Dew would stack up against the others
Was flavorless. ;) I'm at about 7:00 now and he's concerned about bees being attracted to it because of the residue, I'd imagine that residue would also affect the notes he's picking up with the later samples. I'm not real concerned about it, it's an entertaining bit just something that went through my head.
My only experience with Honey barrel finished is a Dad's Hat Rye finished in local honey barrels. It has a almost syrupy thick mouth feel. Sweet up front but then fades into the rye spice leading into the finish. Not a everyday pour but when you want sweet, it hits the spot.
A white shirt would be a good compromise, most people seem to gravitate towards wearing all black, all the time. Maybe a camera shot with a white background behind the glasses to highlight the coloration of the bourbons
My only honey finish is a ragged branch honey finish at barrel proof. It was a distillery only limited release. It is so dark in color and really rich and delicious
I understand why finished whiskeys are never “cheap” but why are all exclusively honey finished seemingly even more? Had a Garrison Bros years ago and was quite the splurge, but was hella good.

Did u get Garission Brothers
Garrison Brothers from Texas
Stop glazing
Beekeeper here! If you don’t bother them they won’t bother you 😂 that said, I get stung all the time! I also finish bottles in my own honey barrels
