Had a buddy find this bottle for us today after I missed it several times this week. Will probably sit on it as a shelf piece for awhile but I was just a the new visitor center last weekend for a tour and it was awesome. I actually met jimmy Russell himself for the second time and got a signed bottle by him and his awesome wife! Great history and bourbon!
opened mine last night. Didn't do a sxs with 101, but could get a little more of the complexity without a comparison. For the $55 price it would be a buy all day. Wish I was closer to KY to try and get a signed bottle.
I think the nose is fantastic. I get a lot of fruit. Great bourbon. Excellent for the price. Stacks up nicely to the Wild Turkey 12 year. Not as good (IMO) but almost a 3rd of the price. I got dried apricot and oak. Found it at Total Wine and More and bought 6 bottles.
Even after watching the video, ppl are still saying its too expensive. Its just 8yr 101. 101 in japan is always 8yr, and its really cheap over there. Smh.
@@jacksmith2315 yeah but it’s a blend of barrels from Jimmy Russell’s favorite stuff like the camp Nelson rickhouses. I like it better than a bottle of Kentucky Spirit I have
Great video! I was lucky enough to buy two bottles at my local Publix and gave one to our club’s personal trainer after he tried to locate a bottle. He opened it last week ( after Milton) and had similar tasting notes; he absolutely loved it. As someone who grew up and played football in KY, he thought $50 was a on target. I’ll eventually get around to opening mine but I collect and gift more than I drink 😂. Make someone smile 😀 today.
I think this one is much better than the standard 101. I only got it because I got it for $50. Two stores in my area have this priced at $100 to $150. Crazy pricing.
Up until 92 or 93, Austin Nichols WT 101 had an 8 year age statement. This is for those of us who drank that old dusty in college. Yeah, I don't mind getting a couple at MSRP.
I tried the WT 70th vs my Kentucky Spirit bottle and I actually liked the 70th more. My KS is a CN-E and Jimmy picked barrels from Camp Nelson rick-houses for this release
It's not like a steal or anything but compared to something like KC9 around 40-45 or RR10 for 40 I would definitely buy one or two. It's special but it's not like going to blow anyone away.
I bought one yesterday in NKy for $60. I keep waiting for Ohio Liquor to put them on the shelves at $50, and got impatient. First crack, pretty good. I definitely wouldn't pay more than $60, so I'm glad they set a reasonable MSRP. I'll see how it opens up in a few days, but I'd be interested to see some channels try it in a 3-way blind vs Kentucky Spirit and regular 101.
I tired the 70th up against regular 101, an 8 year 101 import, and an 8 year age stated WT Single Barrel from the distillery... it's the best of the bunch. It's all the WT 101 notes but far more balanced and cohesive. To me 101 always has these random spikes of flavor that don't gel together. The extra barrel time of the 70th smoothed out some of those edges. My order was 70th, Distillery Single Barrel 101, 8 Year Japan 101 Import, and then regular 101. All of them are similar, but the 70th had the same cherry note of regular 101 but a better total experience from start to finish. It's worth the extra $30 to me but I really hope it just paves the way for them to create an age stated WT as a separate sku.
Went to my local store in Warrenton, OR for a bottle of Buffalo Trace. On checkout I noticed this bottle on the back shelf. The clerk said it was their last one and they would not be getting anymore,so I bought it. Agree with you take on it. Cheers!
I was in Japan earlier this year and drank the 8 year almost daily.. and I’m not a big fan of the US shelf version.. I also find the 12 year too oaky for me.. think this is definitely the sweet spot
I understand charging more for a limited release which commemorates one of the most legendary master distillers ever, after an awe inspiring 70 years with the distillery. But if Wild Turkey really wants to make me happy, they'll make an age stated 101 a regular part of their lineup. They could do it in the same bottle, with just a slight alteration of the label, and charge something like $25-30 for it. I like the 101, and I would absolutely try such an age stated bottle and, if it was worthy of the small bump in price, I'd keep on a-buyin' it. 🥃 8:16 Y'all ought to blind these two - double if possible, but single would work. I expect that the anniversary whisky would win - they'd surely use the best stuff to honor Jimmy Russell with - but I wonder if the contrast would be so striking if y'all didn't know which was which.
As an homage to Jimmy Russell's 70th anniversary of being a part of the distillery, thank the Lord!, that Wild Turkey and Campari put out a solid and AFFORDABLE age stated 101. They could have easily made this more limited and higher priced but thankfully they didnt. As for those wondering if its worth it over a Russell's 10 or a WT Rare Breed, I say yes. This is a one time release. Grab a bottle if you can. The RR10 and WTRBs and regular 101s will be there long after this is gone from the shelves.
It is a legit question but remember that this 70th anniversary 8 year is a one time deal. I say buy a bottle at no more than $65 and you'll be happy with the different experience. The RR10 and Rare Breed will still be there when these are all gone.

Its more than just an 8yr 101. Yes, its 101 prf, and 8yrs old, but that doesnt make it "just 8yr 101". There's also 9yr barrels, and they picked out and blended certain barrels for a certain end result. Put it next to 101, so much different. That take time, time cost money.
