I have gone through about 8 interviews on DJ Ron's platform here. this is perhaps the most important as it relates to building the chronology of the genesis of Jungle. I am 45yrs old and a committed Junglist still, I wanted to share what we were doing as kids in relation to all this in circa 1989/1990. We were dancing (running man of course lol) non-stop to Rebel MC's Street Tuff and Just Keep Rockin, these tunes have all the elements of what becomes Jungle - hip-hop breakbeats, reggae/ragga samples and riddims. Even Street Tuff starts with the Jamaican / patois style sample 'tell mi suttink, you cyant play bass!!', and that's probably the section of the tune we liked the most. Our dress was wallaby shoes, Africa leather medallions, baggy chinos or jeans, naf-naf jacket: basically as pre-teen yoots we were already living the Jungle culture before it was Jungle in a sense. Then when Ragga Twins/Shut Up And Dance came out with their first hits, and the other Acid Rave/Ragga hits, it was just a seamless progression from Rebel MC. By 1992 in high school the tapes are being passed around with Liquid is Liquid and all the other bangers at the time. It was also by this time making the charts. 'Hardcore Jungle' is an interested phrase for an array of tunes in this time circa 1992 going into early 1993, by the end of 1993 into 1994 Jungle proper has clearly formed. The over-arching point and mass experience of us yoorts I am sharing here is that the emerging Jungle culture was just THE youth culture of ours. Of course we would massively admire and love the Reggae and Ragga elements through the 1980s, we then loved the Hip-Hop that was coming over from the usa, so to combine it was just a natural or dare i say logical progression (lovin the pun! lol). Endless love to the Junglist pioneers, esp those that are loyal in a deep way to the community cultural resistance and joys that were the sound systems, and the 1980 film Babylon (feat Jah Shaka inna dance, RIP) speaks to this really well, and Go Forward Youth and Pressure by the recently passed-on Horace Ove is very relevant here and an accessible way into these deep histories. Jungle will never die and will always be reborn again and again cos its so deeply rooted at the Black/Caribbean-led grassroots in this country which speaks to our conditions and environment, the whole 'rose from concrete' concept of the most beautiful things being borne out of oppression.

I am glad you interviewed each of the Ragga Twins separately and gave kudos to them individually. Flinty is a humble and respectful guy who acknowledges his elders and is a role model to the next generation of MCs. I hope some of the new breed take a leaf out his and Deman's book. The Ragga Twins are pioneers and national treasures. RTC 4 Life!

yes my bredda. totally agree. really rich interviews respectively, and still so much more to explore. I think these interviews are an AMAZING forward step in people being able to research and appreciate the histories, but the social aspect is largely absent in the chats, and it was the social conditions that produce everything and also needs to be deeply understood to appreciate the whole ting in a holistic and all-round manner. That's the work we have to keep encouraging and doing. Love to Ron, Flinty, Navi, Daemon, PJ, Smiley, Paul, Rebel/Congo and all the leaders and pioneers who along with us yoots at the time made this amazing movement called Junglist.

Great to hear from both Ragga Twins independently. Thank you for the history lessons, Ron. I'm guessing you're focusing mainly on people known as DJs and MCs but since you mention the pre-jungle breakbeat ragga hardcore window between 1990 and 1994, it would be marvellous to see Bizzy B, Bay B Kane, Lennie De Ice, Potential Badboy and the ground breaking producers at that time too. Also, people further out like DJ SS who were pushing the London sound in the Midlands with Formation Records as for some of us it was the darkside style which got us hooked on this music. Much respect.

Great interview Ron. You continue to meet up with the peope who are instrumental in making the scene what it is today. And that includes Flinty and Deman. I loved hearing about Flintys teacher who had his back. What a difference it can make to have a teacher who does the bit extra to support and motivate a child who they see something in them. Even though Flintys path went the music path, thank the gods of music, what that must have done for his self esteem is immeasurable. Heard the Twins down at XOYO for Randall's residency. They were MCing the Micky Finn. What a combo. They still firing shells. Totally relevant. Still progressing. That's how you do things! Big up Ron!

True I went Homerton and grew up In Lower Clapton im peoper dialed in to this interview. When flinty said how people say he switch to devil music, then see them skanking in the rave is hilariously bang on. One minute we was listening to TDK sound tapes, next ting were at Wallis Road aving it. The only tunes that had any hint of reggea was deffo Wickedst Sound Rebel MC, there was a tune released by Andy Swallows label Labello Blanko and Geneside 2. Apart from them, Ragga Twins were the first to bring the real ting.

Ron, this is 100% just a suggestion and not a criticism as I have been massively enjoying every one of these podcasts... but the new addition of an intro with the music and preview snippets of the interview is unnecessary and a bit of a cliche, in my opinion. The content is so good that I don't think you need to do that, and I've been skipping past the new intros as I don't want to spoil what is coming up in the episode 👍

Just finished listening to this fantastic chat, many thanks Ron and Flinty. Wanted to raise the issue of double time MC culture in Jungle. It is argued here that Det started that off, however whatever about the very fast chats by people like Demon Boyz, Killerman Archer on Narra Mines (Genaside II), Silver Bullet from 1989 and many many more. The fast-paced MCing that directly feeds into or arguably WAS already Junglist is there from before 1993, no?

It was. Lenny De Ice 'We are E' is widely acknowledged as being one of the first jungle tunes. The term 'jungle' just wasn't a label back in 91. But it has all the characteristics of jungle music. The bassline, the breakbeat and the vocal samples. That's the foundations right there. Music producers were producing Jungle long before it became a distinct genre.
