Bit late in the comments tonight only just finished 👌I’m here now 19:21. Please don’t use this comment to post your comment 👍
"Look at that gap, you could walk through it" creased me up 😆
Hello, I'm a really old mechanic (65+) been doing old cars since childhood, my old Dad was very knowledgeable about cars etc anh he taught me that a starter bendix should be clean and dry because the dust from the cutch will stick to the helix and stop the starter from working properly and that is how I've always done them. Cheers men and good luck with the old girl.
Chris is a walking legend! His knowledge is exceptional! One mans scrap is another mans gold
Just seeing the smile on Chris's face was enough & the immortal words of Rob it's a runner made this a great watch today made me smile thank you Rob & Chris for all you give us in the videos 👍👍👍
Wait until the range rover runs 😂
@@jaytc2003 true Rob will be like a Cheshire cat 😂
Chris’s face, he’s like a kid at Christmas… Good on you, it’s a cracking little vehicle.
Lovely to see Chris workmanship and knowledge coming through again 😀, patience is second to none different to see old school points, rotar arm and condenser still knocking about. Remember the days when you flooded the engine and took the plugs 🔌 out and put them under the grill to drive them out. Happy days take care and stay safe 🙏
I love the simplicity of this motor. Can’t wait to see it running.
Loved that video. Found myself smiling and laughing along during it. Chris never gives too much away but you can really sense the joy he’s getting out of that thing already! Have a great weekend guys ✌️
Bought an Ant in the late 80s from Lincs council with tipper on the back and drove it home from Lincoln to Norwich, probably one of the longest runs an ant has ever undertaken.
Not sure how I survived the fumes from that cab over engine
That thing put a smile on the face of everyone who saw it, especially after my friends borrowed it to go conker picking in and kindly painted it camouflage for me.
Happy days.
Ha...Happy memories, SU Carbs and Lucus Distributor's. Instruction for carbs said "Piston should fall with metallic clunk". Always used 3in1 in the damper but some would swear by Redex, think it was the case of what ever you found worked best for your engine. Great stuff guys.
3 in 1 for sure!
I have 5 Reliants, bringing back loads of memories how simple they were. Watch the doors in the wind they have a nasty tendency of whipping back and ripping the hinges out! Chris with the camera - Magic!
Really pleased for Chris . Never seen him smile so much in a video . Well done guys . Fantastic
Guys I have been following your channel for a long time now and I love the way the both of you get on so well there is too many occasions where people are doing jobs now and the people that work with them it can be miserable for people nowadays but you to seem to have a way of getting along and that is very encouraging
This channel just gets better and better. Have been watching right from the start and the variety of vehicles is fantastic from jet ski's to Bentleys and mowers to Lambo's.
Keep up the fantastic work you do lads and don't you ever change 👏
OK Chris and Rob, this has to be one of your best videos to date ,simply because you guys were so relaxed and having fun with no pressure, so good to watch and it kept me smiling all the way through, excellent
Great video Chris and Rob. Brings back memories, distributors, points, condenser, etc - good old simple days.
My first car was a Reliant Supervan 1971 model. Drove it on a motorbike licence before I passed my car test. Great car and good strong reliable engines.
we now have 4 apprentices, 1 recognised a set of points, none for a condenser
i used to work for rac/aa on the nights, renewing points by dull torchlight was the norm on cold winter nights, fitted thousands of sets of points, it was a chore with cold wet fingers - thats why i am a fan of basic electronic ignition... excellent work chaps, more please
Love this little Ant almost as much as Chris does. What character.
A very happy Chris. Smile from ear to ear😀
Great video gents.Bought a tear to my eye.Lost my dad back in June this year.as a kid my dad only had a motorbike licence but we had Reliant Regals then Robins. That engine sound took my straight back, bit sad reminder but also bought great memories back of my dad. Thanks guys
This is my favourite project ever!! Can't wait for next instalment! Love the simplicity of this little vehicle and I am already fully invested in seeing it run and then fully developed. What a find by Chris! And let's be honest it couldn't have fallen into better hands. Rock on Reliant.
Following Adam and the Ants we now Chris and THE ANT!!
What a strange machine and I well remember seeing one or two about many years ago. I did once see one which had two ariels sticking out of the roof with a ball on each and a rather enhanced face.
This really does make excellent change and in a way it is nice to see the variation on the channel.
Well done guys, especially Chris for buying it. FUN, FUN, FUN.
Great video guys loving the classics stuff 👍 Great purchase by Chris any true motoring enthusiast of any kind appreciates this, delighted for you mate 😇😇
Had a crappy day, cars heater has packed up generally had a bit of a shocker last few days, but watching this and how happy Chris was when the ant fired up genuinely cheered me up really enjoy the channel and your content keep it up guys, cheers
Watching Chris changing that condenser and points and then gaping them took me back to my early days of car ownership when these were all standard jobs of every service for the DIY mechanic! Amazed that these parts are still readily available. Chris was going great guns and will soon have this one driving - a bit simpler to work than an Ingenium engine!
Love the little 3 wheeler.Glad Chris decided on the motorbike hauler idea.Perfect for the job. Can’t wait to see BOTH your faces when it drives under its own power.Brilliant addition to Chris’s collection
Hello guys, i;m Tony from Gippsland Austrlia, my mum had a Robin Reliant, please put in a big fire extinguisher, her car caught fire. LOVE YOUR WORK.
Possibly the best video yet, a quirky little old timer sparks into life and as a result two good mates smiling ear to ear. What's not to like? I'm definitely looking forward to a whole series of videos on this little beauty.
Brings back memories of my teenage motoring days. Rotor arms, contact breaker points, condenser and distributor caps. 😀
Brilliant. I could watch, and listen, to Chris all day. Very informative and interesting. Great content as always, stay safe Gents, Cheers 👍🏽 👍🏽
What a lot of fun you are having with this 3 wheeler. I can admit I bought a Supervan new in 1971 and did over 73,000 miles in it. It was a great little van until it started having fuel problems. The maintenance on the engine was terrible working inside the cab and through a small hatch above. You have the luxury of easy access lads!
OMG, the old points/distributor cap - this is bringing back memories & smiles, I can`t wait for the next vid.
Love this vehicle. Chris’s face is beaming with joy
Little bit of advice that i hope you find useful. For any ignition parts i always use and highly recommend "The Distributor Doctor". His ignition parts are far better quality and will outlast that cheap intermotor trash. I wont use anything but his parts now and have never had a single issue with any of them. I know a lot of racing lads also swear by his bits. Hopefully you will find that useful.
I would always change the points for a retro fit electronic ignition module. Pertronix and Lumenition do modules that fit inside the distributor without an external black box. Great for originality but the difference in running and idle is incredible. Spark voltage can triple, once done carb tuning is a doddle. Lucas distributor central bearings wear causing inconsistent dwell angle and a poor spark.
Such a lovely heartwarming video. Can’t wait to see this up and running, stupidly nearly bought a tear to my eye!
Absolutely loving these Reliant videos, basic/simple engineering, and it's going to be a blast to drive
Well done Chris 👏
What a great little thingy? Love it. Really looking forward to seeing it on the road and what it will become. I think for the price it’s going to be a thing of beauty and something to be cherished. Well done Chris 👍👍👍👍
I never tire of seeing Chris's face light up with anything to do with the ant...brilliant
That's a flashback to my youth. I learnt how to do points from my dad when i was 6 or 7. Back in the days when cars were not overcomplicated. I'm going to enjoy this series.
What a fantastic video, going back to old school mechanics brings back memories, the smile on your faces, keep up all your hard work both off you.
Keep safe and enjoy
Excellent, so simple to work on , I recently bought a spitfire 1500 that’s been off the road since 1988 . It’s surprising solid, but hadn’t run for decades. My mate said that will never run . I did. Exactly the same . Turned over by hand , checked for fuel and spark , checked compression .started on third try . Simple stuff
Hi Guy's. Seeing that Bendix Gear, brought back memories. Have replace a couple of those back in the day. I didn't use grease though. The reason was. As the Bendix hit's and engages into the Flywheel Ring Gear, over time (wear & tear). Metal filings from both parts stick to the grease. See you both in the next one. 👍👍
Rob and Chris, I was as excited as Chris wanting it to fire up. so happy to hear her fire up. What a right Brucie bonus when you retrieved all the original parts. Rob, Chris living your best life out at the fish and chips shop. Have a good weekend lads.
great video Boys i don't think Chris stopped smiling all the time he was working on it, now ya going keep us in suspence untill next video when we see Chris thrashing up and down the yard in it.
The smile on Chris's face when it fired up is worth watching.
Absolutely fantastic!!
Knew it wouldn't be long before Chris let loose to get it running!!
Again the biggest smile from Chris when it run !!
Fantastic video guys never dissapoint!! See ya in the next video!!
Took me back a few years , points plugs and condenser …when you compare that engine to something like the evoke it’s a world away ..brilliant vid ..👍👍
You can see the happiness in Chris's face when it turned over. Chuffed has chips, can't wait to see what you end up doing with it.
While the girls are away the boys have gone on a jolly to the sea side fish n chips lol. Great to see Chris enjoying working on simple engines I grew up with I am now 71 next month and most of my cars where plugs points and coils. The new cars of today have left me behind with coil packs and computers etc luckily my sons have the knowledge and the skill to keep my car running. Chris will love the reliant when he gets it road worthy and carrying the bike or trike he wants. Good luck and thank you Tom
I could taste the salt and vinegar on those chips🍟🍟 I had a Reliant van back in the early eighties. I only had a motorcycle licence and it was legal to drive on one! There was something about inhibiting reverse, but I never had to test the theory🤔 I used it to take my race bike (RD250LC) to race meetings, we were pretty well known👍 My girlfriend also preferred the warmer cabin for the weekly trip to my sisters in Chatham, it used to cruise at 60 and if pushing down the hill at Gravesend, would hit 80! We also kept the locals entertained by scraping the wings as you went round the bends in the estate! Great times!
I hope you have a great time with it Chris, and I bet Rob will have a huge grin being passenger!
This was a really interesting video because we were able to look over Chris's shoulder as he followed a logic of repair, going from one problem to the next. Thanks so much.
Hi Chris this brings back memories, many years ago I bought a reliant robin van I had lots of fun and never had problem . Hope you have fun getting it back to it’s former glory, how things have changed .
A good school friend of mine had a Robin Relient back in the 70s and it ended up catching fire after he came home from work one night. Later heard it wasn’t all that unusual for them to do this.
I hope this one bring you lots of pleasure Chris.
I love how happy Chris is with this nifty little characterful truck. I'd make it into a tipper, but Chris's vision of a period bike transporter is great - And probably means he'll have to acquire a period bike! What will her get one wonders? Loved Rob's effort at saying 'readily' certainly didn't come readily!
love seeing chris nerd out, been watching for a long time, great to see chris go from not wanting to be anywhere near a camera to having rob make an intro for him so he can film his own. keep up the good work! also get more mk3 and 4 escorts oh and a sirocco!
Dress Chris up as 🎅 santa and give out toys to disadvantaged kids, I will donate to that
Fantastic idea 😂👏
another great video guys, really nice to see Chris beaming like a kid at Xmas when it fired up, looking forward to seeing him behind the wheel for it's first spin around the yard, awesome
This brought back memories from the early seventy`s ,Reliant super van . the only thing about 1 wheel at the front was the radius arm weld to the stub axle , front wheel at 25 degrees from the upright position !!!!! but did 250 miles every weekend for 2 years from RAF Coningsby to Ipswich. great fun ...
Awesome to see the progress you guys have made since starting your channel, it’s great to see Chris comfortable being in front as well as behind the camera 👍
I remember when i used to do the points on my vauxhall chevette's back in the day.
When you bought new points they were always not aligned up properly so you had to bend the points arm a bit to align them up perfectly.
Used to take the distributer out and spin it at the bottom so the points move and get them to perfectly align up bending the points arm.
Then use the old small bulb to light up to basically get the timing on, then lastly use the timing gun to get the timing bang on.
Great video guys look forward to the next one.
The video I been waiting for I can't wait to see Chris boming up the lane in it, can't wait for the next one
Hello Rob and Chris, what a great video, quote of the year, ‘look at the gap (on the spark plug) you could walk through it’😀😀😀. Reminded me of the services I did on my K reg Hillman Hunter.
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged.
What a treat to see you both get the engine running, and many other things sorted. The amount of spare parts for the truck was amazing! So looking forward to the next video 😊 best wishes from Lincolnshire
Brilliant. Takes me back to fixing the points on my old Mini.
Brilliant video guys, Chris's smile is priceless , like a kid with a new toy.
Loved this video, really made me smile. Chris, you're great with the commentary, nice and relaxed. Loved the bit about setting the points, took me back to doing it on my first cars. I'm same age as you so can appreciate these old style skills.
Well done Chris really enjoyed the walk through. Lovely little project.
What the heck is that? I can't believe I've never seen one of those before. I literally grew up a stone's throw from the Reliant factory in Two Gates, Tamworth - at the time when those were apparently being made there - but I don't ever recall seeing one. Robins, Rialtos, Scimitars, Bond Bugs (loved our lime green one) etc. were ten-a-penny, but honestly can't recall ever seeing any of these Ants coming out of the factory. What a turn up.
Back in the day, an engineers tool kit for my job and a separate kit for the Ford Cortina Estate including points, condenser, HT lead and rota arm, it would never get between the 6000 mile service intervals without having to change these in the motorway service stations 😂😂
So glad to see you guys not only earn a living but also enjoy what you do at the same time! You might not realise but that’s a dream for some! Well done guys!
This so much fun. One of the best. Happy days
I think we enjoyed your enjoyment on this project.
Plenty of good kit in the boxes.
Lovely to see Chris smiling 😊
Nice wooden back on it, would look fab.
Just what I was thinking, with Chris's woodworking skills,
Great video! One thing, don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but I learned back in my early days of driving (late 60s onwards) that you should only lubricate a Bendix with powdered graphite, or at a pinch, very light oil. Heavier oil or grease tends to gather dust and dirt which eventually clogs the helical grooves and stops the pinion gear from flinging out and engaging with the flywheel ring gear.
Just a thought (smile emoji - if I could find one on my PC doh!)
Yes I agree with that. Take starter off and flush the bendix with petrol. I always ran them bone dry, but this one needs a cover over the bendix or it will get all sorts of crap in there.
I bet the old man that owned that ant is so pleased that someone like Chris is the new owner. I bought an old morris miner 33years ago to renovate which I did .the car had always been in her family since it was new in 1959. One condition on having the car was that the lady I bought it off could have the first drive in it with me. 5 yrs later when the car was finished I went round her house and we wend for a drive. She was almost in tears with all her child hood memories coming back to her like going to the seaside with her mother driving. Good luck Chris May be the old boy may like a ride in it when it’s all done. Good luck with all you guy get up to. From a fellow panel beater.
Brilliant well done and showing old school mechanics plugs points etc
Setting points takes me back to the shop floor and my days as an Army Vehicle Mechanic 👍👍brilliant 👍
This brings back memories, my first job leaving school in 1991, I was a mechanic at Derek Slack Motors that was a Reliant garage. This is where I learnt all about fixing engines properly, no diagnostic tools to plug in back then #OldSkool
Just had a right result here, I've been away for a week with no internet access and come home to 3 cracking video's, thanks very much guy's 🍻🍻🍻
Wow, that took me back to the 1960s/1970s with car maintenance. Points, condenser, and plunging into the bowels of an oily mess, I thought it was largely out of sight, but the congestion under the bonnet was as nothing compared with modern things. I would be well out of my depth with the modern stuff I drive these days. Oh dear, one step forward, one set back after another.
Brilliant guys! You can tell how chuffed Chris is with this! Love it!!!
My Dad had a Reliant Robin when I was a young lad, and the sound of that engine firing up brought back so many memories. Very distinctive sound to that little 850 cc motor.
Loads of spam comments today, not just this video either noticed it on loads of different channels.
Loved this lads, great to hear Chris so clear, are you using the new mic's now?
One of the best videos you have done
Can't remember the last time i had a feeler gauge in a set a points !! distributor caps , condensers ... the good ole days 🤣🤣. Great video Chris. Well explained. 👍👍.Rather watch Chris doing the old Relient than a smashed up Ford Focus. Great content 👍
Brilliant video. Thank you. More videos of Chris explaining how things work would be nice, please. He explains things clearly and obviously has a great deal of engineering experience. Thank you also to Rob, for the great filming.
Love this sort of content! And what a wicked little van
Happy days ....so much to enjoy this new project ,,,love it . Reminds me of the "good old" dizzy and points days ....thanks for a smashing video . Enjoy the fish and chips !! ....
I remember seeing Scammell Scarab at Paddington when I was younger ( early/mid 70s). Whizzing around with trailers for the post office. I have never seen one of these before
This little reliant sure brings back memories. In 1981 for 9 months I worked at British Car Auctions. We had exactly the same vehicle which had a drop side flatbed fitted. Every Friday we used it to clean up on site. We would collect all the rubbish and put it in the back. I still remember driving it and the raspy exhaust note it had. I had a lot of fun with that little 3 wheeler.
Fab, love it. Such a nice change from the usual modern stuff! That engine looks just like a Triumph engine but with the distributor and carb on the wrong sides. Looking forward to the next instalment 👍
One of my favourite videos to date and I’ve been watching from nearly the start, great to see Chris doing a fair amount flying solo too. I’m very jealous of the ant, didn’t know they existed but now want one!
What a great project and content for the channel, can’t remember the last time I did points, I think back in the 1990’s!!! It looks like the previous builder has made a reasonable start but now it’s got Chris we all know it will be completed to the best standard, can’t wait to see where you take this. Thanks as always both. Dave.
*Really enjoying this series boys!* Looking forward to the next instalment!!
Absolutely a pair of blokes you pair the smile on Chris's face when it ran priceless that
What a team - Absolutely brilliant
Chris in his element tinkering with those old school components
Keep the content coming!
Love how the first video had more Interest than the Lambo🙈🤣atleast Rob is chuffed for Chris and I think no matter what you guys do it will be a hit, nice to have those spare parts, can't beat fish & chips can you🤙👌👍
