Quick question. I have a thunderbolt display. I can find these cinema displays for cheap. Can I make a dual monitor setup with the cinema and thunderbolt displays in the extended setting? I need a thunderbolt/displayport hub to do that (If I want some ports to use for some outboard gear), but apart from that, will it work seamlessly? Or is there something to take in to account? Thanx
You just saved my 27" Apple Cinema Display LED from the recycle boneyard. I put the serial number in Apple's website and they said it was worth nothing on a trade-in and time to recycle. Now I'll have a killer monitor for upgrading to a new MacBook Pro. 🤗Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Thanks for your tutorial! I am now using my old 27" Cinema Display with my 2017 iMac. I got an adaptor from Amazon, hooked it up and promptly got a black screen. I decided to swap thunderbolt slot, still nothing. Not giving up I wiggled the plug and it finally lit up and now working as it should. So, that's my low-tech tip. $15 gives new life to Cinema Display. I have 2 of them. They are great displays and can be had fro not much money.
I used your affiliate link to get the mini DV to USB C dongle and worked like a charm. Thanks as I was looking for this on my own and wasn't able to find the right one until I saw your video.
Hi. I have a 24-inch version. I'm still looking for a 27-inch in a new shape, but I have had no luck. It's a great monitor, and I like using older Apple monitors and not just chucking them out.
For those who are picking up these thunderbolt 27" displays, most that I have seen have some splitting of the thunderbolt cable at the base of the end. I've used "Sugru" (All Purpose Super Glue, Moldable Craft Glue for Indoor & Outdoor - Adhesive Glue for Creative Fixing, Repairing, Bonding & Personalizing.), on dozens of Apple white power adapter cables, which also break down at the ends from being bent. The Sugru will form around the casing (it only works if there are no shorts in the actual electrical cables), and hardens over night into a semi-flexable protection of the cable. I've also seen it used on cables that cats love to scratch on! It's really a great way to rescue cables that are still working properly, but show signs of degradation of the outer casing. It's $15 for 3 packets.

Would be nice to plug 1 usb-c into the laptop, and clean up the cables around the desk.
This is great! Just got one of these, someone just placed it with a free sign outside their apartment on the sidewalk, and I happened to walk by before it was snagged. Doesn’t have a glass front so I’ll have to order one and has a big scratch on the display, but it was free and it works so can’t complain! If you are using an Apple 2012, 27-inch Cinema "Thunderbolt" Display you need to use different connection cables. The good news is that, Apple sells the required Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 cable.

Great job making the video and tech tips. The Elecjet Magsafe to USB-C PD adapter is no longer available on Amazon, do you have another you can recommend?
I have a TB Display connected to a MBP 14” M1 via TB 2-3 adapter. Works perfectly with keyboard and MacOS inputs (brightness/sound/ and switching between different hardware like camera/mic/bluetooth). The display is not ‘modern’ sharpness at 2K, QHD, or 1440p, but at normal viewing distances is fine. Built-in speakers are good, web-cam and mic are usable. Color is great and high-contrast, not super bright at 380nits, but that is fine in anything but a bright sun lite room. A bought this a couple years ago; late production, almost like new in the box, $200. For me with older external devises like HDs, USB, and even an USB APPLE DVD player, 1GB Ethernet, the older ports on the back connect through the one USB-C connection. Still looks beautiful in APPLE design, super well built all metal and glass. No complaints. Yes, I wish I could afford an APPLE XDR or Studio Display, but hay, for the price and everything this display offers it’s a good option.
Hi This is a very useful video - I am now connected with a mini display to USB C adaptor exactly as shown to my Mac Studio - but why does my cinema screen camera not show up?

No special cable is needed if, your Apple computer has Thunderbolt 2, because the ports are the same looking and you just have to connect it up. Did this two years ago when, I picked-up a space gray "trash can" sized Mac Pro and everything has been working great. Thankyou for your informative video! You mentioned you had both a Cinema Display with thunderbolt 2 and a Cinema Display with mini display port (which is what you have shown in the video). I have a question and wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation. I own 2 Cinema Displays (one which has thunderbolt 2 and one which has minidisplayport). I purchased the apple thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 (usb-c) adaptor and connected it to the MacBook and it works great. I also purchased an Uptab mini display port adaptor to usb-c with power delivery and if I connect that to the MacBook that also works fine. The issue arrises when I try to connect both at the same time, wanting to create an extended display, only 1 works. I have been searching the net over and over and purchased a USB-C hub which also doesn't work as it only allows for dual displays with HDMI. I want to know if there is a solution to allow for the extended display of both of these cinema displays using the usb-c adaptors. Any support would be greatly appreciated!

I have the ASUS Duo Zenbook laptop with thunderbolt output im trying to connect to 27" Thunderbolt display via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from Apple. Tried everything but not working, please help!
Well, you might like my story. About three months after the introduction of the M-1 "Mac Studio", I had planned to buy one but first wanted to make sure my old Apple 2010, 27-inch Cinema LED display could be connected because, I did not like the cost and some of the technical issues with Apple's new 27-inch "Studio Display". First, I checked the Apple web site...no luck, then I checked the on-line Apple web site forums ... no luck, then called Apple telephone support ... still no luck. So, I made an in person appointment at my local Apple retail store and carried in my heavy 27-inch Apple Cinema display. No person in the Apple retail store knew, how to make this monitor work with any M-1 system. Finally, I was able to locate a RUclips video and the name of a device to use to make this work called an "UpTab" cable, it has a USB 3 port on one end and a Mini Display port on the other end. Ordered the "UpTab" cable but, I decided not to buy a new desktop and picked up a used space gray "trash can" size Mac Pro 8-core/D-700/64GB/1TB SSD model which, works without needing a special cable (smile...smile).
I had to buy a new 2023 MacBook Pro with M2 chip because my MacBook Pro 2014 battery started to swell. They said that my LED Cinema Display (2010) will not work because the chips are so different. But I'm hoping that your solutions will work. Except for the power MagSafe sounds like it will not work . The converter you suggested is not available any more. I really want to see if I can still use it. Do you think that the adapter you suggested will work with the newest MacBook Pro MPHHeLL/A
Hey, have you had any success? I just purchased a nay MacBook Pro M2 Chip and an adapter and nothing happens. Not sure if I have to change anything in the settings though.
I use an "UpTab" cable for my Apple 2010, 27-inch LED Cinema display. On one end of this cable, it has a USB 3 type port and on the other end is a Mini Display port (smile...smile).
2024 - My 2020 M1 8/8 core MacBook Air's keyboard has started to fail, so I'm going to "Dock It" until I can afford to replace the keyboard or upgrade. I suppose you're right. But the video also shows how to adapt the power from the monitor to your computer, which is a handy solution as well. And the sections regarding the resolution advantages may be interesting to some. But thanks for watching! Hope it helped.

When I try to adjust it in settings the function is disabled. I'm using an UpTab adapter (USB-C to Mini DisplayPort Adapter 4K@60Hz - Silver) Any suggestions?
I can’t adjust the volume, it’s disabled!! What can I do?
Do you have to have the adapter for the charger to get it to work? I have an adapter for the other two but it still won’t turn on
Suggestion, the history lesson is great!!! but lets go to business!!!
Some people want history, some want business. I give both! lol. Thanks for watching. Feel free to fast forward my rambling, I used to teach for a living, lol.
Are you using an Apple Silicone laptop (M1/M2)?
It's an Apple MacBook Pro with an M3 chip.
The 1st Cinema Display with the Thunderbolt 2 output is Model # A1407. I'm using this with the standard Apply Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 (USBC) adaptor.
The 2nd Cinema Display with the Mini Display Port output is Model #A1316. I'm using this with an UpTab Minidisplayport to USBC adaptor. @@FamilyGeekery

I have an Apple LED Cinema Display and MacBook Air M1. I've been using a docking station with mini display port. It recognizes the LED Cinema Display in "Displays" on System Settings but it is not opening the display. I've tried mirroring options. I'm also trying bypassing the minidisplay port on the docking station by using a USBC to Minidisplay adaptor connected directly to the laptop. I have been able to get my monitor to work today but now whatever try will not work. How do I know when to give up on my LED Display?
hii ! I use an ipad pro and I have the adaptor ! everything works but the sound is too low, is there anyway to fix that or is that just going to stay that way?
Does this adapter Mini Display port work with USB-ThunderBolt 4 ? to connect the new MBP2024 USB-C ThunderBolt 4 to Apple Cinema Display 27 ( mini display port) ?
Bro can i use apple thunderbolt cinema display 27 with only ipad pro 11 2018?
Hi, great video. But I could not get any display output on the Answin adapter from the M1 MacBook. Any idea why?
Are you connecting it to a Cinema Display? Not a Thunderbolt Display, right?
thank you so much for video!
how do i get wireless mouse and keyboards to work. i hooked up a wired keyboard and wireless mouse to back of monitor and neither would work.
got a bluetooth mouse to link with lap top and that works. but my wired keyboard to the back of the monitor doesnt work. any advice?
Does the monitor have a usb cable along with the video cable? Are you plugging that into your laptop?
Really nice video. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Will this still works if my Mac 💻 screen is broken ?
Yes, if your MacBook screen is cracked, you can still use an external display. I have a video about that on my channel.
@ what the screen is not cracked but turn blue?
Oh sorry. When you said broken, I assumed it was cracked. You can try it. Might be the screen. Might be the video card.
@ my bad. The screen is broken but I could still see what I was doing. But now it just blue and barely comeback normal sometimes
Hey there, do you know if the usb ports on the back of the monitor still work since the USB-A cable isn't hooked up to anything? Or, put another way, can data go through the video cable? Thanks! 🙂
USB won’t work over the video cable. But you can get another usb-a to usb-c adapter to plug the usb cable into your laptop.
I have one but the resolution is 1920x1200, I presume is a 21" right?
They made a 23” in 2006 with a silver border. Then a 24” in 2008 with a blackish screen border. Both were 1920x1200. Great screens for their time. Thanks for watching!
I have the ASUS Duo Zenbook laptop with thunderbolt output im trying to connect to 27" Thunderbolt display via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from Apple. Tried everything but not working, please help!
I know you have to find the right drivers for windows to recognize older Thunderbolt devices. Not sure if you’ve found them? Good luck!
Very interesting.
Thanks Mike. Do you have one of these old displays laying around?
great informative video!
I am (not) surprised people actually need a tutorial on this.
Do you think that the adapter you suggested will work with the newest MacBook Pro MPHHeLL/A
Hello, I am in the same situation. Haven't purchased any adapters yet. Have you been able to get it?
Thank you
Hey, have you had any success? I just purchased a nay MacBook Pro M2 Chip and an adapter and nothing happens. Not sure if I have to change anything in the settings though.

I use an "UpTab" cable for my Apple 2010, 27-inch LED Cinema display. On one end of this cable, it has a USB 3 type port and on the other end is a Mini Display port (smile...smile).
Can i do the same on MAC STUDIO M2? Can i put powersafe inside? Anybody who tried?
I use an "UpTab" which, is a USB 3 to Mini Display port cable and it should work fine for all of Apple's M-1/M-2/ and M-3 computers.

13 minutes to say "get a usb c to mini display connector"!
I suppose you're right. But the video also shows how to adapt the power from the monitor to your computer, which is a handy solution as well. And the sections regarding the resolution advantages may be interesting to some. But thanks for watching! Hope it helped.
